Working out my design and building up my tambour skills. I was lucky last time I tried, I realize now. This has been an absolute fight, unlike the last time I tried tambour. Thread quality matters. Oooh does it matter. My first attempt here was using Mettler. Try as I might it kept snagging and twisting. I kept loosing the bead because the loop kept snaging. Saw a video that recommended button hole twist, so I tried the cotton Coats and Clark's I had on hand. It was too fat for the # 70 size needles I was using. So I broke out the Guttermann poly. And suddenly, the stitching was a dream. No snags, no twisting, no fighting for the hook to let go. Just easy loops without tension problems. Finally could develop an easy rhythm! #sewing #embroidery #tambour #BeadWork https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/115/929/427/035/977/982/original/90c9f748d914c631.jpg npub1v8qaxtpq7zzrd92eecdxw4tghmlmxg90ne84wkqkk9g99x7ydndqj7vk9c SewBlue @nprofile…ugpy Hope is also a 4 letter word. npub1v8qaxtpq7zzrd92eecdxw4tghmlmxg90ne84wkqkk9g99x7ydndqj7vk9c SewBlue This this black lump of spilled ink is a bane to productivity. Growing up my parents got trapped in debt. The airforce base closed where we lived and we had to move for unrelated reasons. The local housing market tanked and the house would not sell, and rents collapsed too. They racked up debt while covering 2 mortgages until the house finally sold. At the time to me as a teen the debt was an impossibly high number, and it scared me. We live waaaaay under our means so we can afford a school for dyslexia my kid. College may be cheaper if they go to a state school. But we are doing it without debt, and that is what matters. npub1v8qaxtpq7zzrd92eecdxw4tghmlmxg90ne84wkqkk9g99x7ydndqj7vk9c SewBlue Love this image of a woman in a poke bonnet. Poke bonnets developed as a fashion in the 1810's, and were a fashionable clothing option through to the 1850's, when they finally fell out of favor. Poke bonnets like these were exceptional at providing sunscreen for field work, and the fashion hung about the working class for nearly a century after they had fallen out of favor with the wealthy. Working class poke bonnets are rare in historical archives, being worn to pieces as work wear. You can see the wear, the sweat, the hard work in her bonnet. This woman has worked hard her entire life, far into old age. I can't help but wonder about her life, who she was. #nevent1q…anr0 npub1v8qaxtpq7zzrd92eecdxw4tghmlmxg90ne84wkqkk9g99x7ydndqj7vk9c SewBlue I finished it! Only took staying up until 1 am because the last bit of trim fought me. But it is done, and kiddo was glowing. I copied a gown from 1865, but changed the colors to suit the "emo Victorian vibe" kiddo was going for. As a company, I sell stock once, and in return I need to pay a form a sort of interest payment, a dividend, paid in perpetuity, with a crap ton of rules and regulations now guiding my operations? It's not a loan or a bond, but still a form of debt. I got the cash infusion one, It makes zero for most corporations except for the people who become rich off the process. Obligations for a cash infusion that may have occurred a generation ago, or more. It makes sense for an operation with massive infastructure needs, where the capital needs are huge. Shipping, railroads, electricity etc. For a company with mostly IP? Someone got rich. It is a leash on a corporation, to allow an outsider to profit from someone else's work effort. npub1v8qaxtpq7zzrd92eecdxw4tghmlmxg90ne84wkqkk9g99x7ydndqj7vk9c SewBlue My husband has hit the "fuck you, pay me" phase of the shut down. People are starting to call in sick. His role at Social Security is "essential" while his paycheck is not. He will not be getting paid Friday. His last paycheck was half the normal amount. Maybe this is how Trump kills Social Security, as he just stated he wants to. Prolong the shut down until the systems break. npub1v8qaxtpq7zzrd92eecdxw4tghmlmxg90ne84wkqkk9g99x7ydndqj7vk9c SewBlue @nprofile…e4ry What make a city infastructure feel alive to me is that it is an amalgam of different choices layered over hundreds of years. Thousands of tiny choices: how thick to make a window frame, how tall above street level is the main floor. Buildings built by individuals then repurposed, styles changing over time. Untold layers built up over decades. A single mind, or even a team of minds, is not able to replicate decades of choices, to capture that humanity. Sterility reigns because it's easier to use standardized forms. Function becomes less important than ease of decision making. Planned cimmunities like this is always about control. One mind making the choices, either to earn money off the venture or control people. Everything else is window dressing, a sales job. npub1v8qaxtpq7zzrd92eecdxw4tghmlmxg90ne84wkqkk9g99x7ydndqj7vk9c SewBlue @nprofile…jytp I am out of town one weekend and have a kid's b-day to plan! I was really struggling getting the proportions of the pleats right. Just looked like hot garbage. Adding the swags made things just look worse and uneven. Nothing worked. I took the skirt off the dress form and added the lace swag just by measurements. Every 30 inches. Put 4 equal marks (CF, CSF, CSB, CB) on the waistband, and pinned the skirt to marks, aligning the swags to the waist marks. And then every goddamn pleat almost folded itself. Even the little weird one center side front I've been over thinking. I mean, the pleats are still a bit of a hot mess, but a hot mess that can be tamed. So much of period design is actually "eh, this will work." Magic I tell you. Magic. Divide by 3 and add pins. #sewing #HistoricalCostuming https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/115/149/401/346/849/154/original/b760d5757f64ad72.jpg https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/115/149/402/221/926/732/original/9c7588e0889ffb99.jpg npub1v8qaxtpq7zzrd92eecdxw4tghmlmxg90ne84wkqkk9g99x7ydndqj7vk9c SewBlue @nprofile…args who am I to judge. I just read federal government request for amendment for a very very hazardous material. This material can level a city. And has. Just not in the US within living memory. The industry standard for the material is "Incorporated by reference" into federal code, which means it basically becomes federal code, but managed by industry professionals. It is normally more nuanced, detailed and reflective of current technology than federal code can be, though softer in certain ways. The federal government now says that industry standards are too rigorous. So this question is terrifying: "What mandatory provisions (cited industry standard) if should be made permissive if incorporated into federal code?" Basically: How do we lower the bar from industry standards so companies don't need to follow them? Dear fucking god. This is going to get people killed. npub1v8qaxtpq7zzrd92eecdxw4tghmlmxg90ne84wkqkk9g99x7ydndqj7vk9c SewBlue California poppies from my yard. #BloomScrolling #CaliforniaPoppies https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/114/450/854/012/905/706/original/4fe6aab577a8173a.jpg npub1v8qaxtpq7zzrd92eecdxw4tghmlmxg90ne84wkqkk9g99x7ydndqj7vk9c SewBlue Finished my 1935 evening dress! I feel like May West in the dress - all curves. I love the "barely staying up" feel of this dress. The pattern is from a 1935 drafting system, though getting the drafting to work around my bust to waist ratio was a challenge. And a challenge again to make sure the heavy bread work stayed in place. He's basically the top of the chain in what he works on, the final (non medical) call for the more legally complex decisions like qualifications like disability. Qualification is primarily based on case law, so it is very complex. It took 2 years training and monitored work to do his job. He's a top performer to boot. They have him doing basic public help phone lines once a week now. Helping grannies use a website. While the case count, the difficult work he was trained to do and that has a limited number of qualified people to do, stacks up. He also now needs to call me every couple of weeks to validate that his phone line is working. His group measurably handled more cases per week when working from home to boot. She'd never learn to read left to her own devices, because of the sheer amount of work and insane level of drilling she needs. They'd never accept her anyway, as their success depends on filtering out disabilities. She got rejected at age 6 from a Montessori elementary school for it, and kicked out of a local Catholic school. More human focused that pure engineering. At this point I have 22 years of experience. I'm a principal. What I see a lot of is Great Grandma's Brisket. Great grandma teaches grandma to make brisket. She cuts the ends off while teaching it. Grandma teaches it to mom. Cutting the ends off. Mom teaches it to her daughter. Cutting the ends off. Young daughter makes the brisket with pride while great granny watches. Why are you cutting the ends off? I only did that because my pan was too small. When I do research, I often find brisket driving a practice rather than clear and present safety concerns. Code was worded differently 30 years ago, safety equipment operated differently or didn't exist. In a way though, the point is the same. Someone needs to know their shit, to know if the cows are elsewhere or if it's the end of a brisket. npub1v8qaxtpq7zzrd92eecdxw4tghmlmxg90ne84wkqkk9g99x7ydndqj7vk9c SewBlue @nprofile…cl5w My daughter goes to a school neurodiverse kids. They grade on knowledge, not conformance to a format, allowing each kid to pick a method of presenting information that suits their needs. But much smaller classes and individualized learning plans. Our education system is structured to identify a very narrow definition of intelligence. If you can't conform, you are squeezed out. Presentations, debate, video essays, written essays, are all skills that can be just as valuable as an essay. npub1v8qaxtpq7zzrd92eecdxw4tghmlmxg90ne84wkqkk9g99x7ydndqj7vk9c SewBlue @nprofile…cl5w We will need to go back to oral testing (common before literacy was the default) to validate knowledge levels. My kid is severely dyslexic, so AI would actually help her level the playing field. Between seeing first hand how intelligence can be competely separate from literacy, and my work, it has been glaringly obvious how people mistake literacy for intelligence or understanding. When I was 17 I passed an AP Government essay test despite not recognizing the court cases I was writing on. Quite the lesson for me, that style can matter more than content. It is far far worse than most realize. The rate of learning disabilities in jail and prison is astronomical. A Texas jail measured the rate of learning disabilities (mostly dyslexia) at 80% of the jail population, when it is naturally less than 1 in 5. Current testing methods for dyslexia only captures severe cases, or cases where there is an easy, measurable gap between spoken intelligence and reading. If you moderately struggle with reading due to dyslexia but aren't naturally brilliant in some other way, testing simply doesn't catch it. It can be corrected with teaching that is more like physical therapy for the brain. Instead we go cheap on education, focusing on the kids that are easy to teach, then spend the money on prisons because dyslexics are excluded from jobs due to poor reading skills. We basically jail dyslexics if they aren't from rich families able to pay for a dyslexia education. npub1v8qaxtpq7zzrd92eecdxw4tghmlmxg90ne84wkqkk9g99x7ydndqj7vk9c SewBlue A 90 year old cast iron bathtub is getting a new lease on life. I spend hours training younger engineers to cut the fluff out of their language. It can be very difficult sometimes to untrain what "write a 5 page paper" on a topic light in content has done for our collective writing styles. Verbosity is rewarded over clarity of thought. "Specific to the specified" when "use" will suffice. Clarity must win, so I teach them to play a game to see how many words they can remove from a sentence and have it make sense. What I see in Chat GPC is fluff manufacturing. The actual knowledge and thought goes into the prompt. The error rate in reading Chat GPC is going to be through the roof due to overly complex sentence structure, with too many concepts packed into a sentence. I'm a mechanical engineer and know a bit about steam engines, though no expert. I can see how alcohol would make a great medium for th thermodynamic process. Would require less heat to attain the proper pressures, a huge gain for efficiency. Wonder what the technical problems were, as this could have allowed smaller steam engines much earlier. The distillation process is only lacking in a pressure vessel and piston. You turn a liquid into a higher pressure steam, use that pressure to push a piston, let it condense back to liquid and start over. Thermodynamics and mechanics. Click! My main issue is that you don't debate with Nazis. All you end up doing is advancing their notoriety and help them raise money. The Irish Potato famine is how bad. 1 in 10 people died of starvation while Ireland produced a grain surplus. The arguments were identical - Irish are responsible for putting themselves in a powerless situation. They aren't farming their potatoes right (personal carbon footprint). Famines are natural (during a surplus/climate change is natural). Even: it is good to reduce the population. Genocide before money. It took a leader's political suicide to break the corn laws/corn subsidies to allow grain to stay in Ireland. The focus on blight whitwashes of the true reason 1 in 10 died. British landlords owned the best land and exported wheat, while the Irish day labors earned pennies and did not have enough resources beyond subsistence.
