That is true for most consoles.
Interestingly, the only consoles that Commodore Amiga released, the CDTV and CD32, tried this. It was really half assed though. They had an official licensing system, but anyone with the Amiga developer CD got the CDTV NDK included and could play burned CDs with it. They were just recycled A500 and A1200 computers with a new case and the floppy drive removed. The only thing stopping unlicensed releases was the rights to distribute a copy of the CDTV trademarks, similar to what Game Boy was doing... Which didn't do shit, because threat of litigation only really works on distributors trying to make a notable profit, not an average joe with a good job and a nice CD burner. I imagine it wasn't very well thought out because Commodore's main business model was to cut hardware costs, not sell at a loss and live off of software licensing.
I don't know much about Atari, I think they tried to improve security after the 2600 but that doesn't exactly work if nobody's buying your machines to begin with.
Either way, Sandy doesn't give very good examples.

You've been in the industry long enough you should know better than this. Atari and Amiga were killed by their owners and the Microsoft+IBM monopoly. Not game piracy. Amiga Inc was not even a games company. Their leading product was hardware. Nobody wanted to own an Amiga computer because the IBM PC had caught up, was already in offices, had way more effective marketing, and the main audience interested in a multimedia computer already had their eyes on Nintendo and Sega. Commodore spent years flailing about, half-developing and throwing away different architectures, and not knowing who to sell Amiga hardware to. This is all VERY well documented.
DOOM's trial was under a shareware license. You got free marketing by being the most copied PC game in existence and benefitted greatly from it. 90% of people illegally copying the full version doesn't change that if you're outdoing Windows in install frequency.
Lastly, this additude is exactly why piracy exists. You need to directly and openly address the needs of people copying or they will not respect your boundaries. Games were always expensive, especially back then, and the internet changed the way distribution worked. People who illegally copy media today are also the biggest spenders. Let me tell you about myself. When I was a kid I didn't have money. I pirated shit all the time because it was the only way I was allowed to participate. Six years ago I pirated Cyberpunk 2077 because I did not want to pay full price for a game that was infamous for not working. I bought it months later because I liked it. I pirated dozens of movies because all of the easily accessible distribution methods are protected by Widevine malware, and the alternative is to spend way too much on a Bluray for my disc collection that I *also* don't own, and then decrypt it using a pirate program, which is illegal. If they didn't make being a customer so difficult, I wouldn't have done any of that. The story is the same for nearly everyone else you're pointing the finger at. To blame piracy is to completely ignore the factors which encouraged it, which can be tamed by the company who released the software if they have any theory of mind.
If you look up my Steam account today, I've spent thousands of dollars over the past decade on video games alone, and that's only on one store. Pirates are more than happy to pay for things that they want. If your game is being pirated, then that is something you are doing wrong.

I got a new lower friction mouse pad cause my old one was getting really nasty, and its crazy how much higher my mouse sensitivity feels now. It makes sense but it's not something you really think about until it changes.

as long as youre not playing triple A games, and you're not using windows like a sucker, it's fine. more than enough actually. i've run full IDEs and multitasked on a 15 yr old laptop with less than that and it works fine

If you run a Git server accessible from a web interface, you need to block Facebook's crawlers. Eversince I started mirroring the XLibre repos my server has been getting DDoSed fucking constantly by Facebook. We lost Checkpoint when we migrated this year so it got really bad. I finally had enough of it.
meta-externalagent is the worst offender. Thankfully, it listens to robots.txt unlike some other aggressive bots I've had the displeasure of dealing with.

No, sorry. I agree that appealing to computer illiterate users is detrimental when taken too far, but I do not think this is an excuse to deny the general population encouragement to free themselves. They are better here than there. We have *more* control over the Linux experience as end users. When they enshittify it as they've already been doing, it will be harder for the RedHat/Microsoft cult to maintain an iron grip like what Windows allows. We still lose the ecosystem, but we make any "muh user friendly" numbing unenforceable and create a gateway for freedom to seep back in when people get tired again. Just look at what happened to XOrg. Still not dead, infact people are more vocally against Wayland's creeping now than ever.
Plus, GNOME design elitists and similar are blind to their users regardless. It doesn't matter how many new users turn over or not because they are going to keep pretending they are at the forefront of "user friendly Linux" since it is a power fantasy for them. The correct response is to bring new users over but inform them of the better options they have, that individual choice does not have to be scary and user friendliness does not mean mimicking a cell phone. People who want to turn us back into passive consumers are not going to stop at "there are no users" because they're out of touch and see enthusiasts as potential conversion anyway (that or they call us all fascists, because when politics are involved that is considered a "win" in their book).

Ok... I do not like to call myself smarter than other programmers. I have only gained a grasp at what I am doing within the past year. If I had to work with something on the scale of libc I would struggle. If I had to port a bunch of modern Unix tools to a forty year old platform mostly by myself I would die.
But... whoever ported libnix2 + newlib to amiga needs to see a psychiatrist, because allocating a few bytes with a simple new or malloc() should not start an infinite loop that eats all available memory until it eventually paints over the screen with garbage.
How do you even let that happen?
In all of the time I have spent debugging my own porting work thinking I did something wrong, I could have used AllocMem, avoided all of this and rewritten the other handful of stdlib features I needed instead.

On Framework's latest controversy,
Work is work and if someone can keep their personal views out of it when it's not relevant, the quality of the work should be judged on it's own merits. I don't think holding that principle of neutrality is a very far reach. It is not Framework's duty to only support the people you like because of the reasons you approve. Particularly if we are talking about open source software where many of these are not directly making a profit, and particularly when this is a business and not a person. There's a dedicated time and place for everything.
I've watched a lot of maintainers gatekeep their projects to only contributors or members they agree with, and it never ends well for them, even if the people kicked out were objectively in the wrong. It demonstrates to onlookers that the maintainers care more about their own reputation than skill. And most of these are the same kinds of people who will insert extreme political messaging into projects that favor themselves. Probably the nastiest examples are when Discord Chat Exporter and node-ipc were compromised to target Russian users, with DRM and aggressive malware respectively. Not the government, mind you, but random ordinary people they thought were Russian. It's cultist bullshit.
Also, vaxry isn't even an extremist, all of that shit was made up by a known pedophile because he was mad he couldn't control vax's project. Never seen any serious proof of the claims against him. So even if this "you're supporting a nazi" stuff had any weight, it's aimed at the wrong people.

Murder over merely politics is not an appropriate use of force against anyone. Imagine how this could be used to justify an assassination against a democrat too. If violence against politicians is normalized then the only opinions that will matter are the ones that conveniently line up with the most violent and disruptive in the country.

Same here. And my best friend in middle school was an illegal brought here against his will from El Salvador. We had Mexican and South American immigrants covering a third of the school when I was young and nothing ever happened where I live. Usually the most crime I see in my town is drunk drivers and they're almost always either college girls or middle aged white men.
I don't like illegals coming into our country, but the truth is most people who come here just want to get away from the third world. Mexico ofc just lets it happen because they don't want to deal with their crime problem if we'll do it for them.
