You Cannot Add a Cow
The tragedy of the commons is the clearest picture of why fiat rots — every printed unit is one more animal on a pasture everyone owns. Bitcoin's whole trick is to fence the field. Its unfinished problem is what got fenced out.
Picture a shared pasture, open to every herder in the village. The grass is common property. Anyone can graze.
Now do the math each herder does. Add one more cow to your herd and you get the full benefit — a whole extra animal's worth of milk and meat, yours. The cost? The pasture is grazed down a little more — but that cost is shared by everyone. So the rational move, for each individual, is always: add another cow. And another. Every herder reasons identically, the pasture is stripped bare, and the herd starves.
Here's the haunting part: no one chose the collapse. Every single person acted sensibly. The structure did the rest. That's the tragedy of the commons — private gain, socialized cost, a shared resource that no one owns and therefore everyone destroys.
And it is the most exact possible description of what fiat money does.
Fiat is Hardin's pasture
The commons, in the fiat system, is the purchasing power of the currency — the value of the money itself. It's a shared field that everyone holding the money grazes on together.
Now watch a new unit get printed. It's one more cow. Whoever issues it captures the full benefit immediately — fresh money, spendable now, at today's prices. And the cost? Dilution — a little less value in every unit — spread thinly across everyone who holds the currency. Individually rational for the issuer. Collectively ruinous for the herd. Exactly the pasture, exactly the cows.
The signature of the tragedy even has a name: the Cantillon Effect. The herders closest to the money spigot graze first, while the grass is still lush — they spend the new money before prices have risen. Everyone far from it grazes last, on a pasture already trampled — their wages and savings only catch up after the value has drained away. The near graze rich; the far graze poor; and the field is stripped for all.
No one votes for debasement. No one chooses the collapse. The structure produces it, herder by rational herder. Fiat isn't like the tragedy of the commons. Fiat is the tragedy
of the commons, applied to money itself.
Bitcoin fences the pasture
Now the core move, and it's beautifully simple.
Bitcoin ends the tragedy by abolishing the commons — by fencing the field so tightly that no cow can ever be added. Twenty-one million. That's it. No herder, however powerful, however well-connected, can graze one more animal onto the pasture. The state can't. A bank can't. Satoshi couldn't.
Think about what that removes. The tragedy needed two ingredients: open access, and the ability to keep adding cows. The hard cap eliminates the second entirely. There is no shared resource left to overgraze, because the supply simply cannot be expanded by anyone for private gain. The pasture can't be stripped, because it's been converted from an open common into fenced, finite property.
And proof of work fences the other classic commons — the integrity of the chain itself by making any attack on it cost more energy than it could ever yield. Grazing the ledger dishonestly is made unprofitable by design.
So at its core, Bitcoin is the anti-tragedy. It takes an ungoverned commons and turns it into private property with hard borders — which happens to be one of the two classic escapes the theorists always named. It's the cleanest win in this whole series.
Which is exactly why the honest half matters.
The commons it fenced out
Bitcoin doesn't escape the tragedy. It relocates it. Fencing the money commons created new commons — smaller, but still ungoverned — and they're precisely the loose threads I keep ending these essays on.
Block space. The room inside each block is a shared, limited resource. Everyone wants their transaction included; when demand surges, the congestion — the overgrazing — is felt by all, as soaring fees. Bitcoin's partial answer is the fee market: it prices the grazing, which is the managed version of a common rather than a free one. Better than open access. Not the same as no tragedy.
The security budget — the deep one. The security of the whole chain is a commons: everyone benefits from it, and almost no one pays for it directly. Today it's funded by the block subsidy, the new coins minted to miners. But that subsidy halves, and halves, toward zero. In the long run, security has to be paid for by transaction fees alone. And if
everyone free-rides — using the chain's security while pushing their actual transactions onto other layers that don't pay the miners — the common good of security could end up underfunded. That's a textbook tragedy of the commons, sitting quietly a few decades out, still unsolved.
Nodes and development. Running a full node to verify the chain yourself is a public good — unpaid, unmeasured, sustained by volunteers. So is writing the core software everyone depends on. Free-riding on both is perfectly rational; provision is basically charity. Which is the classic recipe for a public good to be chronically under-supplied.
Same pattern as every piece in this series. The core solves the tragedy absolutely. The human layer around it inherits a smaller version of the very same problem.
Two ways out, and the one Bitcoin still owes
The theorists eventually found two escapes from the tragedy. Privatize the commons give it an owner who bears the full cost of ruining it. Or govern it collectively — and here Elinor Ostrom won a Nobel Prize for showing that communities genuinely can selfgovern a shared resource, without a state and without selling it off, through rules they make and enforce themselves.
Now you can see exactly what Bitcoin did, and what it didn't.
It privatized the one commons that mattered most — the money supply — flawlessly, by code, in a way no government ever managed. That's the triumph. But its own internal commons — block space, the security budget, node-running, development — it left to be handled the other way: by markets and by Ostrom-style voluntary cooperation. Which is the powerful, unproven, leak-prone part. Fencing the money was the easy, absolute victory. Governing the commons that fencing created is the slow, human, still-open work.
The one line to keep
The tragedy of the commons is what happens when private gain is drained from a shared thing whose cost is paid by everyone. Fiat is that tragedy applied to money itself — every printed unit one more cow on a pasture we all own, the Cantillon Effect deciding who grazes the lush grass and who gets the trampled dirt.
Bitcoin's genius is a fence: twenty-one million, and no cow can ever be added. Its unfinished problem is that fencing the money conjured new, smaller commons — block space, security, verification — that it now has to govern the hard way, with prices and cooperation instead of code.
So it solved the tragedy that was eating the money. Whether it can govern the tragedies it created in the fencing is the question the next few decades will actually answer.
You cannot add a cow. That part is finished. The rest is still grazing.

The Cow and the Machine
Yuval Noah Harari says you understand the economy about as well as a cow understands the farm. Now the thing running the farm isn't even human anymore.
Yuval Noah Harari has an unkind way of describing your relationship to the economy. You are, he suggests, a bit like a cow.
The cow spends its entire life inside a system — the farm, the market for milk and meat — that completely determines its fate. And it understands none of it. The prices that decide whether it thrives or ends up as steak are set in rooms it will never enter, in a language it could never learn. The cow isn't stupid. It's just permanently on the wrong side of a wall.
Now be honest with yourself. How much better than the cow do you actually understand the market that governs your rent, your job, your pension, the price of everything you buy? You live inside it. It decides your fate. And its real machinery — the flows, the rates, the vast churning of global capital — happens somewhere you'll never see, in a language most people never learn.
Harari's point stings because it's mostly true. But it always had one escape hatch. And the machine is about to weld it shut.
The one thing that kept us above the cattle
Here's what the cow can never do: stop being a cow. There is no path from the herd to the farmhouse. A cow cannot study its way into becoming the farmer.
Humans had that path. That was the whole difference. The market was made of people — traders, bankers, analysts — which meant that at least some humans stood on the other side of the wall, understanding it, running it. And the door between the two sides was, in principle, open. It was called education. Become financially literate, learn how the system works, and you could climb from cow to shepherd. From governed to governing.
That ladder is the quiet promise underneath this entire series. Don't trust, verify. Learn enough to hold your own keys, read the rules, refuse to be someone's cattle. Sovereignty through competence. The ladder was always steep — but it was there, and it was human-sized.
The machine is now pulling it up.
The shepherd isn't human anymore
Look at who actually moves markets today. High-frequency trading systems that act in millionths of a second. Quantitative funds run by models no single person fully understands. And, arriving fast, autonomous AI agents that will trade, price, and arbitrage with no human in the loop at all.
The market is becoming, increasingly, made of AI. Which means the beings that understand it and set its prices are no longer even human. You cannot study your way to their level, because their level isn't a harder version of human thinking. It's a different kind of thinking entirely. You cannot out-calculate the machine — not with more effort, not with more education, not ever.
Sit with what that means. For the first time, the system that determines human life is understood by no human at all — not even the shepherds. The people who "run" the quant fund can't follow what their own models do. The ladder from cow to shepherd isn't just steeper. It's gone, because the shepherd is now a machine that no amount of human learning can become.
What this does to everything I've told you
This lands directly on three things I've spent this series arguing. None of them survive intact.
"Don't trust, verify" — the motto — breaks. Verification that requires superhuman
mathematics is not verification. It's faith wearing a lab coat. The cow can read the whitepaper cover to cover and remain, in the actual market, a cow. The democratic promise that you can check it yourself holds only as long as "yourself" is enough. Against the machine, it isn't.
The competence knife turns on you. I argued that sovereignty is earned, nondelegable competence — that you can't hand off holding your own keys without rebuilding the master you fled. But if the competence required becomes superhuman, you're left with exactly two options: delegate to the AI — a new master, and we're right back to trusting a who — or stay a cow. The non-delegable skill doesn't just get harder. It becomes unreachable.
The Cobra Effect goes to machine speed. Remember Goodhart: you get the behavior
you measure. An AI is a Goodhart engine running a billion times faster than any human it will find and drain every gap between a measure and its goal, including inside Bitcoin itself: front-running, extracted value, mining optimization, fee-market games. You don't
just get the behavior you measure anymore. You get the behavior the machine measures, discovered at a speed you can't perceive.
By every line of argument, the machine wins, and the cow stays a cow.
And then — exactly as with the Cobra Effect — the thing that looked like a weakness turns out to be the defense.
The last rule you can still read
Here's the turn. What makes proof of work and the 21-million cap remarkable isn't only that they can't be gamed. It's that they are simple enough for a human to check without superhuman math.
You do not need a quant model to understand Bitcoin's monetary rule. There will only ever be 21 million. New coins arrive on a schedule you can read on one page. The supply is auditable by anyone, at any time, with ordinary arithmetic. In a world where the market has become unreadable, where fiat policy is opaque, where AI has swallowed the machinery of price — Bitcoin's core rule might be the last piece of your own economy that a cow can still fully understand.
That's not a small thing. It's a genuinely new kind of defense: simplicity as a shield against the superhuman. The machine can out-calculate you on everything except the one rule that was deliberately built to need no calculation at all. You may be a cow in the market. But you can still know — verify, with your own eyes, no priesthood required that no one and nothing can print more than 21 million. Not the fund. Not the state. Not the AI.
The honest limit
Be precise about what that saves, though, because it's less than the maximalists will tell you.
You've won sovereignty over the rule, not over the price. The machine still decides what a bitcoin is worth. It still trades circles around you, still front-runs your orders, still moves the market in directions no human can predict or follow. Knowing there will only ever be 21 million tells you nothing about whether one is worth a fortune or a pittance next week. On that — the thing you actually feel — you are as much a cow as ever.
So this isn't an escape from Harari's farm. It's one readable island in an unreadable ocean. The fair question is whether that's enough: whether knowing the supply is fixed means much when a machine still sets the value.
Maybe it isn't enough. But notice the size of the gap it closes. It's the difference between understanding nothing about your money and understanding the one thing that matters most about it — that its quantity cannot be inflated away by anyone, human or otherwise. Of all the facts about your economic life, that may be the only one left that you can hold entirely in your own head.
The one line to keep
You will probably never understand the market. In an age of superhuman mathematics, perhaps no human ever will again — not even the ones who think they own it.
But you can still know, and check for yourself, that there will only ever be 21 million.
That is not sovereignty over your economic fate. It is sovereignty over the single rule beneath it — the last thing on the whole farm that a cow can still read with her own eyes. Whether that turns out to be a foothold or just a comfort is the question the machine age is about to answer for all of us.

The Bounty on Dead Cobras
Goodhart's Law is the reason the rules around you are strange — and the reason Satoshi's real genius was never scarcity.
The British, running colonial Delhi, had a snake problem. Too many venomous cobras in the city. So they did the sensible administrative thing: they put a bounty on dead cobras. Bring in a dead snake, collect a coin.
It worked, at first. Then it stopped working, in a way nobody saw coming. Enterprising locals started breeding cobras — why hunt dangerous wild snakes when you can farm them for guaranteed income? When the government caught on and scrapped the bounty, the breeders had a warehouse of now-worthless cobras on their hands. So they let them go. Delhi ended up with more cobras than before it started.
That's the Cobra Effect, and once you can see it, you'll see it everywhere — including, in two very different ways, inside Bitcoin.
The law nobody in charge remembers
There's a rule underneath the cobra story, and an economist named Charles Goodhart put it plainly: the moment you turn a measure into a target, it stops measuring what you wanted.
Say it in blunt human terms and it's even sharper. You don't get the behavior you want. You get the behavior you measure.
Watch it operate:
Measure a call-center worker by how many calls they close, and you get short calls customers hurried off the line, problems half-solved. Measure a programmer by lines of code written, and you get bloated, padded software, because now length is the reward. Measure police by number of arrests, and you get arrests — plenty of them, aimed at whatever's easiest to arrest, which is not the same thing as justice.
And the cruelest one. Rank a hospital by its survival rate, and it will quietly start turning away the sickest patients. Not because the surgeons are monsters — because the number rewards it. Take the hard cases and your rate drops. Refuse them and you climb the league table. The measure, meant to reward good care, now punishes it.
Here's the part worth stopping on. Every incentive you have ever been handed — at
work, in school, by your government — was designed by someone who forgot this law. And most people walk through their whole lives sensing the rules around them are subtly perverse without ever knowing why. It isn't because they're not clever. It's because no one ever handed them the lens.
Consider this the lens.
Money forgot it too
Now point the lens at money itself, because fiat runs on Goodharted numbers.
A healthy economy used to show up as a rising GDP. So GDP became the target — and once it was the target, you could juice it with debt, with spending that builds nothing lasting, with activity that looks like growth and isn't. The measure detached from the health it was supposed to track.
Or take inflation. We measure it with an index, then set a target for that index. So the index gets reweighted, adjusted, massaged — and people watch the official number stay calm while the actual cost of their actual life climbs. The measure became the target, and stopped telling the truth. Classic cobra.
This is the world Bitcoin walks into. And here's where it gets genuinely interesting.
The room the cobra can't enter
Everyone thinks Satoshi's breakthrough was scarcity — the fixed 21 million. It wasn't. Plenty of things are scarce. The real breakthrough was designing a measure you cannot game.
Bitcoin secures itself through proof of work: to add to the ledger, you must burn real energy, real computation. And notice what that does to the Cobra Effect. In every example above, the measure and the goal came apart — you could hit the number without doing the real thing. Close the call without solving the problem. Pump GDP without building wealth.
Proof of work welds them shut. The metric — energy expended — is the goal — security. You cannot fake the number without actually doing the work, because the number is nothing but a receipt for the work. There's no cobra to breed here, no shortcut, no way to satisfy the measure while betraying its purpose. The measure can't be gamed because the measure and the thing itself are the same object.
That is the rarest thing in all of institutional design: an incentive built by someone who did not forget Goodhart's Law. One small, airtight room the cobra cannot get into.
But the rest of the house is full of snakes
And now the honest half, because Bitcoin does not banish the Cobra Effect. It builds one cobra-proof room inside a house where the snakes breed as freely as ever everywhere you step outside that hard core.
Measure success by price — "number go up" — and watch what the culture optimizes for. Not sovereignty, not sound money, but the number. You get speculation, leverage, a thousand copycat coins promising a bigger number, and a movement that starts mistaking a rising chart for a mission accomplished. The measure ate the purpose. (If that sounds familiar, it's the cobra wearing the robes of the faith I wrote about a few essays back.)
Measure adoption by exchange volume, and you reward exactly the thing Bitcoin was built to escape — coins piling up on custodial platforms, banks quietly rebuilt one layer up, because the metric counts activity, not self-custody.
Measure decentralization by node count, and people spin up cheap, hollow nodes that flatter the statistic without spreading any real power. Measure security by hashrate alone, and mining stampedes toward the cheapest energy on earth and clumps into a handful of pools — the number goes up while the thing the number was supposed to protect quietly narrows.
Same law, every time. The instant a human or a market can hit the number without doing the real thing, they will — and Bitcoin's core is the only place where that gap has been engineered shut. Everywhere the code stops and people begin, the cobra is back in business.
The one line to keep
So here's the whole thing.
The Cobra Effect isn't a quirk. It's a law of gravity for institutions, and nearly every rule you live under is bent by it — designed by someone who forgot that you get the behavior you measure, not the behavior you want.
Bitcoin's quiet triumph is that its heart is the one incentive in modern life that remembered. Proof of work is a measure you can't game, and that's the actual miracle bigger than scarcity, bigger than the price.
Its quiet danger is that everything around that heart — the price, the exchanges, the culture, the vanity metrics — is as vulnerable to the cobra as any hospital league table. The protocol is Goodhart-proof. The people are not.
Which leaves you with the only real skill here, and it's the lens itself: for any rule, any target, any number someone hands you, ask the one question almost no one asks what does this measure actually reward, once people start gaming it? Ask it of your job, your metrics, your money, and your Bitcoin.
Most people never get handed that question. You just were.

Everyone Can See You. Nothing Can Save You.
The two strongest arguments against Bitcoin are that it's the most watchable money ever built — and that its code rules without mercy. A believer takes them seriously.
Here are two facts about Bitcoin its loudest fans would rather you didn't sit with.
First: every payment you have ever made with it is public, permanent, and visible to anyone on earth, forever.
Second: if you make a mistake, the system will destroy your money without a flicker of remorse — and there is no one, anywhere, you can appeal to.
I believe in this technology. I also think both of those things are true. So let's take them seriously, because the strongest case against Bitcoin was never made by the people who hate it. It's made by the people who actually understand it.
The most watchable money ever made
Start with the surveillance, because most newcomers have it exactly backwards. They assume Bitcoin is the anonymous money of criminals. It is closer to the opposite.
Bitcoin's whole security rests on a public ledger — a record of every transaction, held by everyone, checkable by anyone, kept forever. The movement's own motto is don't trust, verify. But read it again and feel the edge on it. If anyone can verify the ledger, then anyone can verify you.
Compare it to what it's meant to replace. Your bank sees your transactions, but the public doesn't — and cash is seen by no one at all. Bitcoin flips that. Its entire payment graph is open to the whole world, permanently. The moment a single address is tied to your name — through an exchange that checked your ID, an IP address, one careless post — the coins connected to it give up their whole history, and their whole future. Not one transaction. All of them, backwards and forwards in time.
So yes. Measured honestly, Bitcoin is the most transparent — and therefore the most surveillable — money that has ever existed. That's not a smear. It's a design consequence, and it's the price of trustlessness that nobody prints on the poster.
But watching is not the same as controlling
Here's the turn, though, and it's the whole difference.
Surveillance is not control.
Picture the thing Bitcoiners actually fear: a central-bank digital currency. A CBDC watches you and commands you. It can see every purchase, freeze your balance, set an expiry date on your money, forbid you from spending it on the wrong things. Seeing and controlling, fused into one tool.
Bitcoin has only the first half. It is radically transparent — and radically uncontrollable. No one running the protocol can freeze your coins, reverse your payment, or stop you from spending. The ledger can watch you all day; it cannot lay a finger on you.
Which tells you exactly where the real danger lives. It isn't in the code. It's at the edges — the regulated exchanges, the ID checks, the on-ramps where the transparent network touches the surveilling state. That's where watching can turn into control. The chain is a window; the state is the hand. And privacy on Bitcoin, as a result, isn't a default you're given. It's a practice you have to learn — which is a genuine burden, and a subject for another day.
Most transparent money ever built: true. Dangerously surveilled: only once the state closes every edge. Those are two very different claims, and the fear belongs to the second one.
The rule that never bends
Now the harder charge, and the one I find more interesting — that the code itself is a kind of tyrant.
The case is real, and it deserves respect. Send your coins to a mistyped address and they are gone. Not frozen, not recoverable — gone, into a void, instantly. Lose your key and your fortune is sealed away forever, in plain sight, untouchable. There is no manager, no court, no ombudsman, no human being with the power to say "I see what happened; let me help."
A rule with no exceptions, no mercy, no judgment, no appeal — that is a real form of inhumanity. It's the ghost from an earlier essay in this series, the abstraction we kneel to, finally hardened into a god that cannot be reasoned with. And everyone, without exception, must obey it. If that's not tyranny, the argument goes, what is?
A tyrant chooses. The code can't.
Here's where I push back — carefully, because the discomfort is legitimate even if the
word is wrong.
Look at what a tyrant actually is. A tyrant rules arbitrarily and for his own benefit. He bends the rules for his friends, breaks them for his enemies, and exempts himself entirely. That is the essence of the thing — not harshness, but caprice in the service of power.
The code can do none of that. Its rigidity is precisely the reason no one can bend it in their own favor. It cannot be bribed, lobbied, or leaned on. It applies to the most powerful person alive in exactly the way it applies to you — equally, blindly, incorruptibly. That is not the definition of tyranny. It is the oldest dream of its opposite: the rule of law instead of the rule of men.
So the real question isn't "is the code a tyrant." It's sharper and stranger than that: is a rule that is immutable and equal for everyone the opposite of arbitrary power or just a colder version of it?
Not Nero. Gravity.
That's why the right comparison isn't a cruel emperor. It's necessity — natural law, the way the physical world simply is.
The code doesn't rule over you. It is indifferent to you, the way gravity is indifferent. Gravity, too, has no mercy: step off the cliff and it will not make an exception because you're sorry, or important, or unlucky. And yet no one calls gravity a tyrant, because a tyrant chooses and gravity cannot. It has no favorites and no agenda. It just holds.
Which reframes the whole complaint into the real question — the one this series keeps arriving at from every direction. Is it liberation or a colder cage to trade a human master for an indifferent one?
A human master can be cruel. But a human master can also be merciful — can forgive the debt, reverse the error, hear your case. The code offers you freedom from his cruelty by taking away his mercy in the same stroke. That's the trade, stated honestly. Freedom from a ruler who could hurt you, bought with the loss of a ruler who could save you.
Two things keep it from being simple tyranny, though. The first is exit. You are born into a state, with no say; you are never born into Bitcoin. A master you can walk away from, for free, at any time, is barely a master at all — and that's true right up until the day the thing becomes so dominant there's nowhere left to walk. The second is that "ossified" is a spectrum, not a fact. The code does change — SegWit, Taproot, real upgrades — just slowly, and only when nearly everyone agrees. No one commands it. That's not the rigor mortis of a corpse. It's the caution of a system that refuses to let any single hand rewrite the rules.
The one line to keep
So — is Bitcoin the most surveillable money and its code a merciless master? Honestly, in a real sense, yes to both. And here's what saves the two charges from being a takedown and turns them into the deepest thing you can understand about it.
They are the same shape, twice.
Its transparency is freedom from the issuer — no one can debase you — paid for with privacy from everyone. Its rigidity is freedom from arbitrary power — no one can bend the rules against you — paid for with freedom from rigid power, the mercy and flexibility a human system can offer.
That's the trade that runs under every essay in this series. Bitcoin does not hand you freedom, whole and free. It buys you one specific freedom, always, at the cost of another. No layer of it was ever without a price.
Which means the honest believer isn't the one who insists the money is perfect. It's the one who can name exactly what it costs — and decides, eyes open, that this particular trade is the one worth making.
Everyone can see you. Nothing can save you. Both are true. The only question left is whether that's the price of a cage, or the price of being free.

Cult, Religion, or Honest Money?
Bitcoin gets called a cult, and the accusation is half right. The mythology is cultish. The mistake is thinking the mythology is the money.
Look at Bitcoin from the outside and it's easy to see a religion. There are prophets — a pseudonymous founder who vanished, leaving scripture behind. There are the faithful, with laser eyes and a doctrine of salvation through a rising number. There are heretics, schisms, holy wars over block size. There is even an eschatology: hyperbitcoinization, the end of days when the old money burns and the believers inherit the earth.
The critics who point at all this and say "cult" are not hallucinating. That layer is real, and it is embarrassing, and it deserves the mockery it gets. But they make one error, and it is the error that this whole essay is about: they mistake the congregation for the cathedral. They think the mythology is the money. It isn't. And once you separate the two cleanly, most of the "cult" charge falls away — while the part that survives turns out to be an indictment of the believers, not the thing they believe in.
The tool that makes virtue unnecessary
Start with what the protocol actually is, stripped of everyone worshipping it.
Bitcoin's founding instruction is four words: don't trust, verify. People hear this as advice about being careful. It's something far more radical. It is a confession — a design admission that nobody in the system can be trusted, and that the system is built to work anyway. Not the miners, not the developers, not the whales, not Satoshi. Everyone is assumed to be a potential crook, and the machinery settles honestly regardless, because the rules are checked by each participant rather than vouched for by any authority.
That is the opposite of a church. A church needs you to trust the priest, the doctrine, the good faith of the institution. Bitcoin needs you to trust none of it. A tool that required saints to operate it would just be another institution asking for your faith — which is precisely the thing sound money was invented to escape.
So here is the tell for the whole debate. The moment you tie the coin's merit to the virtue of the people who hold it, you have made the un-Bitcoin move. You've
smuggled the priest back into a system engineered specifically to fire him. Whether the holders are wise or greedy, generous or insufferable, has exactly nothing to do with whether the ledger settles. Coupling the two is a category error — and, ironically, it is an error committed by critics and maximalists alike. One side says the coin is bad because early holders got rich unfairly; the other says the coin is holy because its holders are enlightened. Both are grading the tool by the character of the hands holding it. Both are wrong for the same reason.
Early allocation is not clean — and doesn't need to be
Let me concede the strongest version of the critique, because dodging it is what cultists do.
Bitcoin's early distribution was not morally clean. It rewarded conviction, luck, and being strange enough to point a CPU at an obscure client in 2009. A tiny number of people ended up holding a great deal because they were early, not because they were deserving. That is a real inequality, and pretending otherwise is cope.
But "unfair" is a comparison, and it demands a baseline: unfair compared to what? There was no premine skimmed for insiders. No venture round that let the connected in before the public. No gatekeeper deciding who was allowed to participate. The code was public from the first day, and anyone on earth with a computer could have mined. That is not the same as morally clean — it is permissionlessly open, and those two things get conflated constantly by people who should know better.
The distinction matters because only one of them is a property a protocol can actually deliver. No neutral rule can hand out a "morally deserved" distribution; deserving isn't a quantity a machine can measure. What a protocol can guarantee is that the door was open to everyone on identical terms. Bitcoin cleared that bar completely. Critics who won't accept it are usually holding it against an ideal distribution that has never existed for any money in human history — not gold, not the dollar, not a single currency ever issued. Judged against a fantasy, everything fails. Judged against every real alternative, "open to anyone, gatekept by no one" is the fairest launch money has had.
Tools don't need saints
This is the line I keep coming back to, and it's the heart of it: tools don't need saints.
Nobody asks whether the inventor of fire was a good man, or whether the first people to smelt iron deserved the advantage it gave them. A hammer drives a nail in a sinner's hand exactly as well as in a saint's. The printing press spread bibles and blood libel with equal fidelity, and its usefulness was never a referendum on the virtue of early printers. We judge a tool by whether it works, whether the door to using it is open, and what it lets people do — not by the moral biography of whoever picked it up first.
Bitcoin is a tool. Its truth-value lives in the code and the network — twenty-one million, enforced by every node, verifiable by anyone. That truth is completely indifferent to whether the person holding a coin is admirable. Demanding that the holders be worthy before you'll respect the money is like demanding the early adopters of the wheel be philosophers before you'll admit it rolls.
What the three words in the title actually mean
The title asks whether Bitcoin is a cult, a religion, or honest money. The three are separable by a single axis: how much they ask you to trust.
A cult asks you to trust a person — the leader, the founder, the voice that must not be questioned. A religion asks you to trust a doctrine — the scripture, the promise, the story about how it all ends. Honest money asks you to trust nothing. It hands you the rules and says: check them yourself. Don't take my word. Don't take Satoshi's. Run the node.
By that measure, most of what gets called "the Bitcoin cult" is real — but it is a cult that has grown around honest money, the way barnacles grow on a hull. The laser eyes, the founder-worship, the salvation narrative where the number rising redeems you: all of that is a religion, and it is a liability, not an asset. It is hope-selling — the exact thing sound money was supposed to abolish. Hope with a price tag is what fiat does, what the wrinkle cream does, what every institution asking for faith does. The moment Bitcoin's case rests on believing in Satoshi's sainthood or the holders' righteousness, it has quietly rebuilt the church it was meant to replace. The religion doesn't strengthen the honest-money claim. It corrodes it, by dragging the whole argument back to faith in people.
The good news is that the money doesn't need the religion. Strip away every prophet and every laser eye and the protocol settles exactly the same. That's the point of it. It was built to survive its own believers.
Keep the coin and the congregation apart
None of this is a defense of the mythology. It's the opposite — an argument for amputating it. The strongest thing you can say about Bitcoin is also the most deflating to its evangelists: the tool works, and the holders are just people who were early. Some were wise, some were lucky, some are unbearable. It does not matter. The ledger doesn't check their character before it clears a block, and neither should you.
Honest money is, in the end, the one kind that can survive its own worst adherents because it never asked you to trust them in the first place. Keep the coin separate from the congregation. Judge the protocol by whether it works and whether the door was open. Judge the mythology by how much it smells like the priesthood we were trying to leave.
Don't trust. Verify. That was never a slogan. It was a boundary — the line between honest money and everything else that has ever asked for your faith.

Agreed — and you’re pointing right at the fault line.
The protocol’s whole genius is that it makes virtue unnecessary. “Don’t trust, verify” isn’t advice about being careful; it’s the admission that nobody in the system is trustworthy and it works anyway. A tool that needed saints would just be another church. Bitcoin’s actual flex is that it runs on the assumption everyone’s a crook — Satoshi included — and still settles.

There Is No Account to Suspend
Bitcoin took money out from under the state. Nostr tries to take your name and your voice out from under the platform — using the exact same trick: keys, not rights.
Imagine waking up tomorrow to find your account gone. Not hacked — suspended. A decade of posts, your whole audience, the identity you built, switched off by a company that owes you no explanation and offers no appeal.
You already know this can happen, because it happens to someone every day. And if you’ve followed this publication, you know why it can happen: your account was never yours. It was a permission, granted by a platform, revocable at will. You were renting your own name.
Nostr is an attempt to end that arrangement. And the way it does it is the same move Bitcoin made with money — just aimed one layer higher, at the self.
Let me build it up.
What an account actually is
Strip away the interface and a social-media account is a simple thing: a row in a company’s database that the company controls. Your username, your followers, your posts — all of it exists at their pleasure. You log in, which is to say you ask permission to be yourself each time. The platform can change the rules, throttle your reach, or delete you outright, and there is no court you can appeal to. Their server, their god.
This is the digital version of a very old problem. Who holds the right to your identity? On today’s internet, the answer is: not you. Someone else grants it, and what is granted can be withdrawn.
Nostr’s move: your name is a key
Here’s the reframe that makes Nostr worth understanding, even if you never use it.
On Nostr, your identity isn’t an account. It’s a key pair — two long strings of characters that belong together. One is public (your npub ), which others use to find and follow you. One is secret (your nsec ), which only you hold, and which signs everything you post as unmistakably yours. That’s the whole identity. There’s no company in the middle. Which means the sentence that defines the entire system is this:
There is no account to suspend, because there is no account.
No one can delete you, because there’s no row in anyone’s database that is you. No one can revoke your name, because no one granted it. You hold your identity the way you hold your own nose — not by permission, but by simple possession of the thing itself.
If that sounds familiar, it should. Bitcoin’s chain doesn’t recognize rights; it recognizes keys. Nostr doesn’t recognize accounts; it recognizes keys. It’s the same principle you own what you can sign for — carried from money to selfhood.
The same escape, one layer up
Think of it as the second half of a single project.
Bitcoin took money out from under the state: no issuer, no one who can freeze or debase it. Nostr tries to take speech and identity out from under the platform: no host, no one who can suspend or erase you. Own your money by key; own your voice by key. Together they’re two halves of one idea — the individual who needs no bank and no platform to exist.
And notice what it does to the oldest weakness of “just leave the platform.” Quitting in protest has always been an empty threat, because your audience is held hostage — walk away and you lose everyone. On Nostr, your followers are tied to your key, not to the platform. Your social graph travels with you. So the exit becomes real: you can refuse the whole regime — the surveillance, the algorithm, the arbitrary bans — and actually walk, without starting over from zero.
That’s the thing philosophers could only assert on paper — that you can withhold your consent from a system that claims authority over you — turned into something you can just do.
But here’s the crucial difference from Bitcoin
Now the part the enthusiasts gloss over, because it’s where the promise gets soft.
Bitcoin has consensus. One shared global ledger, one agreed history, scarcity enforced by enormous physical work. Its neutrality is close to absolute — cryptographic, not negotiable.
Nostr has none of that. It isn’t a blockchain. There’s no mining, no scarcity, no single truth. There are just relays — plain, dumb servers that receive your signed posts and pass them along. Your clients talk to a handful of them; that’s the whole machine. It’s light and fast, and no single relay can silence the whole network.
But every relay is a real computer, run by a real person, in a real country, paying real bills. And that means Nostr’s “no ruler” property is a different, weaker kind than Bitcoin’s. Bitcoin’s censorship-resistance is baked into math. Nostr’s is economic and probabilistic: it holds as long as enough independent relays keep running. If relayhosting centralizes — under spam, legal pressure, or just cost — you quietly get choke points again.
It’s the on-ramp problem from Bitcoin, wearing new clothes. The protocol is neutral. Power creeps back in at the edges. The keys are sovereign. The relays are not.
The competence knife, sharpened
We’ve said before that this kind of sovereignty has a cruel edge: it’s only as strong as your ability to manage a secret key, and that skill can’t be handed off without rebuilding the very middleman you escaped.
With money, that edge is sharp enough. With identity, it’s sharper. Lose your Bitcoin key and you lose money. Lose your Nostr key and you lose yourself — there’s no reset, no support line, no “forgot password,” because the whole point is that no one has the power to reset you. Worse: if your secret key leaks, someone else doesn’t just access your account. They become you. They sign as you, permanently, and the network has no way to tell the difference.
Sovereign identity is a heavy thing to carry. Most people, offered it, will hand the key to a service that manages it for them — and quietly rebuild the platform they were trying to leave.
The honest limits
Like Bitcoin, Nostr picks the individualist side hard: pure ownership of the self, no collective, no sovereign. And so it inherits the individualist failure modes.
Spam. Harassment. The question of who curates a commons that has no owner. A platform “solves” these with a ruler who bans and filters. Nostr refuses the ruler, and pushes the problem out to the clients and to webs of trust — you see what the people you trust vouch for. That’s authentically anarchist. It’s also authentically unfinished. Anarchy of speech hits the same wall as anarchy of property: without a ruler, how do you handle the shared spaces? Nostr’s answer is reputation and markets instead of a sovereign. It’s a real answer. It is not yet a proven one. And there’s the trap this whole series keeps circling. Today, Nostr is largely Bitcoiners talking to other Bitcoiners — which makes it easy to mistake an in-group’s faith for the shape of the future, and to sacralize “the protocol” as the new thing beyond question. A promising primitive is not the same as a working public square, and pretending otherwise is how a tool becomes a church.
The one line to keep
My honest take: Nostr is the most philosophically coherent companion Bitcoin has. It extends the same logic — keys, not rights — into the one domain money doesn’t touch, and it gets the hardest part right. It has genuinely solved the identity problem: your name is a key, and no one can take it. What it has only gestured at are the problems of the commons — the relays, the moderation, the shared space — which is the exact mirror of Bitcoin, which nailed consensus and left its edges exposed.
Put the two together and you get the self-sovereign individual, fully armed: own money, own voice, both by key, underwritten by no state and no platform. Which lands on the oldest question there is, the one Aristotle asked long before any of this — about the being who needs nothing and no one to exist.
He is either fully sovereign, or he is completely alone. And cryptography, for all its power, cannot tell you which.

Barter Never Happened: Graeber, Menger, and Where Bitcoin Actually Stands
The origin story most Bitcoiners tell is the one anthropologists spent a century disproving. The good news: Bitcoin doesn’t need it.
There is a founding myth that almost everyone who touches money eventually repeats. It goes like this. Once upon a time, people bartered. A farmer with grain wanted shoes; the cobbler wanted a chicken; nobody’s needs lined up, and trade was a nightmare of mismatched wants. So, gradually, cleverly, humanity converged on a single good that everyone would accept — metal — and money was born from the market itself, no king required.
It is a beautiful story. It is also, according to the people who actually study early human societies, almost certainly false. And the argument over why it’s false turns out to be the most useful lens we have for understanding what Bitcoin is — and what it isn’t.
Two origin stories, diametrically opposed
In one corner: Carl Menger, the Austrian economist whose 1892 essay On the Origins of Money gave us the market-emergence theory. Menger’s claim is elegant. Some goods are more saleable — more liquid — than others. A rational trader, stuck with grain nobody wants today, will first swap it for something highly saleable, then use that to get the shoes. Everyone reasons the same way, everyone converges on the most saleable good, and money emerges spontaneously from countless individual choices. No state, no decree, no central plan. An invisible-hand order.
This is the intellectual bedrock of the modern hard-money movement. Saifedean Ammous’s The Bitcoin Standard is, at its core, pure Menger: gold won the saleability contest for millennia, and Bitcoin now wins it in digital form. If you’ve heard Bitcoin described as “the most saleable good” or “the hardest money,” you’ve heard Menger, whether or not the name came up.
In the other corner: David Graeber, the anthropologist whose 2011 book Debt: The First 5,000 Years took a wrecking ball to the whole edifice. Graeber’s central provocation is what he called the myth of barter. His point was blunt: economists have been repeating the barter origin story for 200 years, and in all that time, no anthropologist has ever found the society it describes. Not one. The pure barter economy that supposedly gave birth to money is a thought experiment that got mistaken for history.
What came first, Graeber argued, was credit — webs of debt, obligation, and IOUs tracked socially within communities. Virtual credit money is older than coinage, not younger. And in Graeber’s telling, coinage was less a triumph of market efficiency than a byproduct of something darker: war. Soldiers in foreign lands won’t accept a promissory note; they want anonymous metal they can spend anywhere. States minted coins from plunder to pay armies, then demanded those same coins back as taxes — forcing entire populations into the market to earn them. Money, army, and slavery emerged together.
Who’s actually right?
Here’s the uncomfortable part for both camps: the historical record leans toward Graeber on timing, and toward Menger on logic — and neither gets a clean win.
On timing, the evidence is fairly settled and it favors Graeber. In ancient Mesopotamia, temples and palaces were running sophisticated systems of account — measuring debts in silver and barley, keeping ledgers — for thousands of years before the first coins were struck in Lydia around 600 BC. Credit and accounting genuinely came first. That’s not fringe anthropology; it’s the mainstream view among people who read cuneiform for a living. The naive “barter, then coins, then credit” sequence is backwards.
But Menger’s defenders have a serious rejoinder, and it’s one Graeber never fully answered. Menger’s theory was never a claim about a datable barter epoch. It was a claim about logic — how a medium of exchange can emerge from decentralized choices without anyone designing it. And there’s a crucial distinction Graeber tends to blur: credit works inside a community where people know each other and can track who owes whom. Money becomes essential precisely between strangers — across communities, borders, and cultures, where there is no shared ledger and no basis for trust. Proving that no village ran on internal barter does not prove that money can’t emerge from markets rather than states. Those are different claims.
The formalized version of Menger — the neoclassical search-theoretic models of Kiyotaki and Wright — shows mathematically that a medium of exchange can arise endogenously from rational actors trying to cut transaction costs. Graeber waved this away as more “barter myth.” His critics reasonably respond that he confused “there was no pure barter economy” with “barter played no role at all” — when in fact barter demonstrably existed in exactly the niches Menger cared about: between strangers, in frontier zones, where credit couldn’t reach.
The honest synthesis is that money is plural in origin. It grew from temple accounting and social payments — bride price, blood-money, tribute, sacrifice — and stranger- trade. There was never one clean birth. Graeber’s monocausal “it was all war and debt” is as overreaching as the barter myth he demolished. The strongest scholarly position isn’t Graeber-total or Menger-total; it’s that both captured a real thread and mistook it for the whole rope.
So where does Bitcoin actually stand?
This is where it gets interesting for anyone holding a private key.
Institutionally, Bitcoin is Menger’s dream made real. It is money that emerged from the market with no state issuing it, no central bank managing it, its “saleability” grounded in verifiable digital scarcity rather than decree. If you wanted a laboratory test of whether a monetary good can arise and gain value purely through voluntary adoption, Bitcoin is the closest thing history has produced. Menger, in that sense, has been vindicated in a way he never lived to see.
But — and this matters — the barter-origin myth is still a weak foundation to build the argument on. When Bitcoiners defend the asset by saying “gold emerged from primitive barter and Bitcoin is digital gold,” they’re leaning on exactly the story anthropologists spent a century dismantling. It’s an unforced error. You don’t need it.
The better defense is the one Graeber’s own framework accidentally hands you. Recall his key insight: credit works among people who know and trust each other; you need neutral, trustless money precisely for exchange between strangers, where no shared ledger exists and no one can be trusted to keep the books honestly.
That is Bitcoin’s actual pitch. Not “digital gold from the mists of prehistory,” but: neutral money for a world of strangers, with no trusted third party required to keep the ledger. Bitcoin’s genius isn’t that it recreates a mythical barter past. It’s that it solves the exact problem Graeber identified as the real reason impersonal money exists — the stranger problem — and solves it without the state, the army, or the trusted intermediary that every previous solution required. The blockchain is the shared ledger, maintained by no one and verifiable by everyone.
The takeaway
Graeber was right that barter never happened the way the textbooks say. Menger was right that money can emerge from markets without a sovereign. And Bitcoin, oddly, needs both of them to be understood properly: it is Mengerian in how it emerged, but its real justification is Graeberian — it is the first money that solves the ancient problem of trust between strangers by removing the need for trust altogether.
Stop arguing that Bitcoin is gold from the barter age. It’s better than that. It’s the ledger

The Right to Your Own Nose
Stirner, Godwin, and the anarchist question hiding in your Bitcoin wallet: what makes anyone’s rule over you rightful — and what happens when a money finally answers, “no one’s”?
Touch your nose. It’s yours — obviously. Now try to prove you have a right to it.
You’ll find you can’t, and that the demand is faintly ridiculous. You don’t hold your own face by anyone’s permission. That small absurdity was the opening move of one of the strangest, sharpest books in philosophy — and it runs, by a surprisingly straight line, to the money in your wallet.
Because every serious argument for anarchism, and every serious argument for Bitcoin, is really an argument about a single word. Not power. Legitimacy. The claim that someone’s rule over you is rightful.
Let me build it up.
The philosopher who called rights ghosts
Max Stirner, writing in 1844. His target wasn’t this or that government. It was right itself — the whole idea.
Stirner had a word for the abstractions people kneel to: ghosts. God, reason, nature, humanity, society, “the rights of all” — each one an invented thing we treat as sacred and then let rule us as if it were real. A right, to Stirner, is just such a ghost: a phantom we grant authority over our own lives.
His sharpest example was censorship. A court declares something forbidden, and we’re told to accept the verdict as right. But notice the trick, he says. The verdict only counts as right if you already accept the court’s authority to pronounce it. The legitimacy proves itself with itself. It’s a closed circle: the censor is right because the censor says so.
So Stirner throws out right entirely. What’s left when you do? Two plain things: might and ownness. What you have in your power is your own — not because anyone granted it, but because you can hold it. Property isn’t a right handed down by an authority. It’s simply what you keep. And the state, in this view, can never truly tolerate the person who values himself above it.
In place of the “sacred” society that has claims over you, Stirner offers something colder and freer: a union of egoists. A voluntary association you use for your own ends and can walk out of at any time — one that owns you not at all.
The one line that broke the social contract
Now the tradition Stirner was blowing up.
Locke and Rousseau are the great architects of legitimate authority — the thinkers who tried to make the state rightful by rooting it in you. Locke grounds government in natural rights plus your consent, even the “tacit” kind: you used the roads, so you’ve agreed. Rousseau grounds it in the general will, a collective self-rule so complete it can, in his chilling phrase, force you to be free. Both make the same move. The state rules you rightfully because, at some level, you agreed.
Then William Godwin, 1793, sets a charge under the whole structure with one observation. If government rests on the consent of the people — yet claims power over the very man who refuses his consent — then consent was never the real foundation. It was force wearing consent’s costume. The one person who says no exposes the fiction for everyone.
That sentence is the birth of philosophical anarchism. No authority can be made rightful over someone who withholds their agreement. Consent that binds the unwilling isn’t consent at all.
So what is anarchism, actually
Not chaos. That’s the slander that lets people skip the argument.
The word means without a ruler — not without order. And it’s really two moves stacked together.
The first is the negative one all these thinkers perform: demolish every excuse for rightful coercive authority. Rights are ghosts (Stirner); consent can’t bind the refuser (Godwin). Strip away the legitimations and rule stands revealed as simply force that has talked its way into respectability.
The second is a wager: that order can arise without a ruler — through voluntary, selfinterested, dissolvable association rather than command.
But anarchism splits hard on one question, and you need to see the split before we get to Bitcoin. The question is property. The individualist wing — Stirner, and much later the anarcho-capitalists — says: abolish the state, keep property, and you’re free. The
communist wing — Proudhon, Bakunin, Kropotkin, with Rousseau’s shadow behind them (“the first man who fenced a field and said this is mine began all our misery”) — says the opposite: property itself is the domination, and a propertied order without a state is just private tyranny with better branding.
Hold that fault line. It reopens the instant you say the word Bitcoin.
The anarchist machine in your pocket
Here’s where it stops being a seminar.
Bitcoin is without a ruler by construction. No issuer. No administrator. No one who can print it, freeze it, or reverse it. It is the first large-scale monetary order that coordinates millions of people with no sovereign at the center — not as a manifesto, but as a system that has been quietly running for years. Whatever else it is, it’s the strongest evidence anarchism has ever produced for its central claim: that rule is not necessary for order.
But which anarchism? This is the part worth slowing down for.
Bitcoin is Stirner made literal. Your seed phrase is the purest ownness that has ever existed. You hold your coins by might, not by right — by control of a key, not by a title some court agrees to honor. The chain does not recognize rights. It recognizes keys. It doesn’t know the word “deserve” and it doesn’t know the word “entitled.” It knows who can sign.
Which means the Bitcoiner who thunders “I have a natural right to my property” is smuggling back the exact ghost Stirner spent a whole book exorcising — and the protocol does not have his back. The protocol backs whoever holds the key. Cryptography is Stirner’s ownness with the metaphysics stripped clean out.
The network itself looks a lot like his union of egoists. Miners, nodes, and holders each chase their own naked self-interest. Nobody participates out of duty or for a sacred cause. Order falls out of the intersection of all that selfishness — and you can join or leave whenever you like, owing nothing to anyone.
And Godwin’s dissenter, at last, gets what philosophy could only assert on paper: an actual exit. You can refuse your consent to the monetary regime — the debasement, the surveillance, the controls — and genuinely withdraw from it. The refused consent stops being a paradox in a book. It becomes a transaction.
The honest limits
Now the part the true believers skip.
This is anarchy of money, nested inside a world still ruled by the territorial state. Taxation, jurisdiction, the very real wrench that can be used to extract your seed phrase — none of it is touched. Bitcoin is an anarchic enclave in one layer of life, not anarchy achieved. Anyone selling it to you as the end of the state is selling salvation, and you’ve read what I think of salvation stories.
And that property fault line? Bitcoin doesn’t resolve it. It just picks a side, hard — the individualist one. Whether a stateless order built on pure, absolute property is freedom or simply a new private tyranny is exactly the question the communist anarchists raised two centuries ago. Bitcoin doesn’t answer it. It just runs, and lets you find out.
The trap, and the one line to keep
Here’s the warning Stirner would hand you personally, and it loops back to a question I keep circling: don’t let “the protocol” become your new ghost.
The 21 million cap, “the code,” “consensus” — treated as sacred, inviolable, beyond question — that is a fixed idea too. A god of math you could end up kneeling before exactly as your ancestors knelt before the state and the church. Godwin dreamed of reason ruling in place of men. The live danger is that you escape the rule of rulers only to enthrone the rule of code as the newest holy cause that owns you.
So, the whole thing in one breath:
Anarchism was never the belief that no one should hold power. It’s the refusal to pretend that power over the unconsenting is rightful — joined to a bet that order doesn’t need a ruler. For two hundred years, that bet was only words.
Bitcoin is the first place it’s actually running. Stirner’s ownness and Godwin’s exit, compiled into cryptography. Not the whole of freedom — only the money — and only until the day you start worshipping the code instead of the ghost it was built to replace.
The chain doesn’t recognize your rights. It recognizes your keys.
Sit with why that might be the most anarchist sentence ever written into a machine.

Transparency for the Powerful, Privacy for the Rest
Bitcoin’s open ledger is radical transparency aimed at exactly the wrong target. The people who owe the world visibility stay hidden; the individual gets stripped naked. That’s backwards — and fixing it is the hardest unsolved problem in this whole story.
Across this series I’ve defended the open ledger. It’s the thing that lets you verify instead of trust — no institution standing between you and the truth of who owns what. So here’s the uncomfortable question a careful reader should have been saving up: if openness is such a virtue, why should you be the one exposed?
Because that’s what a fully public ledger actually does. It applies total, permanent, searchable transparency to the individual — every payment you make, forever, out in the open — while the institutions that hold real power over money go on operating in the dark. Central banks don’t publish their reasoning in real time. Commercial banks don’t open their books to you. Corporate trading desks don’t show their order flow. And yet the ordinary person, transacting for groceries and rent, is asked to live on a ledger anyone can read.
That’s transparency pointed at the wrong end of the telescope.
The asymmetry principle
There’s an old idea in this space that resolves the tension, and it’s worth stating plainly: transparency should scale with power. Those who wield force or hold other people’s money — states, central banks, public companies — owe accountability. Those who simply live their lives owe no one a view into their affairs. Visibility should be proportional to power, and it should run upward, not down.
By that standard, an open ledger is the perfect tool aimed at precisely the wrong subject. Applied to a central bank, radical transparency is called accountability and we should want more of it. Applied to a private citizen, the identical mechanism is called surveillance, and we’ve somehow been talked into treating it as a feature.
Let me be fair to the other side, because this is a genuine dispute and not a settled fact. Institutions argue their opacity is necessary — national security, financial stability, orderly markets. Regulators argue individual transparency is what stops money laundering and terrorism financing. Reasonable people weigh those against the asymmetry principle differently. But notice the direction the current system leans: it has become very good at seeing the individual and very comfortable leaving power unseen.
Bitcoin is pseudonymous, not anonymous
Here’s the part most newcomers get wrong, and it’s where the abstract worry becomes concrete danger.
Bitcoin doesn’t hide you. It gives you a pseudonym — an address — and then records everything that pseudonym ever does on a ledger that never forgets. The moment that address is linked to your identity — through a regulated exchange, through reusing an address, through one careless connection — your entire financial history becomes readable. Not a snapshot. The whole thing, backwards and forwards, permanently.
And that turns openness into a threat model:
The wrench attack. If an attacker can see you hold significant Bitcoin, the cheapest way to get it isn’t cryptography — it’s a physical threat. Visible wealth invites coercion. A ledger that broadcasts your balance is, for the wrong person, a shopping list.
Targeting. Scammers, extortionists, and thieves don’t need to guess who’s worth pursuing when the ledger tells them.
State power, applied backwards. A government’s monopoly on force includes the power to criminalize, and a permanent public ledger is a perfect retroactive evidence trail. A transaction that’s legal today can be reinterpreted tomorrow, and the record will still be sitting there, waiting.
The transparency you rightly demand of institutions becomes a weapon when it’s turned on you. Same tool, opposite moral valence — because the power isn’t symmetric.
Does Lightning fix it?
Partly — and it’s important to be honest about the limits. Lightning is primarily a scaling layer, not a privacy layer, and the two get conflated constantly.
What it genuinely helps: payments happen off-chain, they’re onion-routed so no single relay sees the whole path, and individual payments don’t get carved permanently into the public ledger. That’s a real improvement over broadcasting every coffee purchase to the world forever. What it doesn’t do: opening and closing channels still happens on-chain and is visible. Routing nodes see fragments. Anyone positioned at both ends of a payment can correlate it. Lightning makes you harder to watch; it does not make you anonymous. And — a point people skip — it does nothing at all about the quantum question. Different problem, different layer.
Quantum is a separate axis entirely
Don’t let anyone fold quantum computing into the privacy conversation; they’re orthogonal, and conflating them muddies both.
Two things the coverage usually gets wrong. First, the threat is to signatures, not to mining. The hashing that secures the blockchain is relatively robust; what’s exposed is the elliptic-curve cryptography proving you own your coins — specifically wherever a public key is already visible, through old key-based outputs, reused addresses, or certain spend types. Recent analysis puts the exposed share around a third of all Bitcoin.
Second, the timeline is compressing but not imminent. Serious estimates now cluster around a roughly one-in-six chance of a capable machine by 2035, rising toward midcentury — no longer the comfortable “decades away,” not yet a reason to panic. The defense has started: a proposed quantum-resistant output type entered Bitcoin’s improvement process in early 2026. The bottleneck was never the math; it’s coordinating a decentralized migration that could take five to seven years, which is exactly why it’s beginning now. Privacy coins and Lightning don’t get a pass here every chain has to make this migration on its own.
Do we actually need Monero, Zcash, Grin?
For real privacy at the protocol level: yes, because Bitcoin doesn’t provide it, and bolting it on after the fact only goes so far. The three main approaches are worth understanding as a spectrum:
Monero makes privacy the default and mandatory — mixing every transaction among decoys, hiding amounts, and generating a fresh stealth address for each payment. Strongest confidentiality, least flexibility.
Zcash makes privacy optional, using zero-knowledge proofs to shield transactions, plus “viewing keys” that let you selectively reveal your activity to a party of your choosing. This matters more than it sounds: it is the asymmetry principle rendered in code private by default, verifiable on your terms. You can prove what you want to whom you want, and hide the rest. Grin takes yet another route — no addresses at all, hidden amounts, and a compact ledger — via the Mimblewimble design.
Zcash’s model is the interesting one for the argument I’ve been making. “Private, but auditable when I choose” is exactly what a citizen should have: no default exposure, but the ability to open the books to a court, an auditor, or a tax authority on demand. That’s privacy for the individual without becoming a black box for the genuinely accountable.
The cost is real and rising. A European regulation will bar regulated providers from offering anonymity-preserving coins from July 10, 2027 — though, crucially, it targets exchanges, not ownership, peer-to-peer transfers, or self-custodied wallets. Monero has already been delisted from most regulated exchanges. The practical consequences are thinner liquidity, harder access, and less of the survival-through-time — the Lindy credibility — that Bitcoin has accumulated. And one more caution that undoes a lot of naïve confidence: protocol privacy is not operational privacy. The moment you touch a KYC on-ramp or off-ramp, you’ve created an identifiable point regardless of how private the coin itself is.
The honest conclusion
There is no single tool that does all of this. Anyone selling you one is selling you something. What actually protects the individual is a stack: a neutral base layer for settlement, a payment layer like Lightning for better-but-imperfect day-to-day privacy, dedicated privacy technology where confidentiality genuinely matters, real operational security against the wrench-attack world — and, running underneath all of it, the postquantum migration every chain must eventually make.
But the tools are downstream of the real question, and the real question isn’t technical. It’s the one this whole series keeps circling: who owes whom transparency? Bitcoin proved we can build a ledger no one can hide from. The unfinished work — the part that decides whether this technology liberates people or exposes them — is making sure that ledger points up at power, and leaves the individual free to live unwatched.
Transparency for the powerful. Privacy for the rest. We’ve built half of it. The half we’re missing is the half that protects you.

Someone Has to Run the Deficit
Triffin, the milkshake, and whether a money that is no one’s debt can change the game
Every reserve currency carries a contradiction at its heart, and almost no one notices it because the contradiction is disguised as a privilege.
The privilege has a name — exorbitant privilege, coined by a French finance minister in the 1960s with more resentment than admiration. It means the issuer of the world’s money gets to borrow more cheaply than anyone else, pay for imports in money it prints, and export its own inflation. It sounds like pure advantage. It is also a trap, and the trap has a name too: the Triffin dilemma. Understanding why they are the same thing seen from two angles is the whole story — and it’s the only way to ask honestly whether Bitcoin changes anything, or just moves the furniture.
The dilemma nobody chose
Robert Triffin testified to the U.S. Congress in 1960 with an uncomfortable observation. The postwar system had made the dollar the world’s reserve currency — the money nations held, traded in, and settled with. But here was the problem. For the rest of the world to have dollars — to hold as reserves, to conduct trade — the United States had to supply them. And the only way to push dollars out into the world, net, is to run a deficit: buy more from abroad than you sell, and pay the difference in your own currency. Dollars out, goods in.
So the reserve issuer must run persistent deficits to keep the world liquid. But persistent deficits are exactly what erodes long-run confidence in a currency. The system demands the very behavior that undermines it. Supply the world with money and weaken the money; or keep the money strong and starve the world of liquidity. There is no setting that does both.
That is Triffin’s dilemma, and notice precisely where it lives. It does not come from there being one dominant currency. It comes from the reserve asset being, at the same time, the national liability of a single country. The world’s savings and one nation’s debt are forced to be the same instrument. That is the fault line.
Which immediately tells you what would dissolve the core of it: a reserve asset that is no one’s liability at all. Why gold didn’t have this problem — in this form
Under the classical gold standard, the anchor of the system was gold, and gold is nobody’s debt. No country had to run a deficit to “supply gold” to the world; gold simply existed, neutral, external, the liability of no government. The reserve asset and a nation’s balance sheet were decoupled. The Triffin trap, in its acute form, wasn’t there — because the thing the world saved in wasn’t the thing a single treasury owed.
Keep this straight, because it’s the pivot of everything below: a neutral reserve asset removes the Triffin core. When the world’s store of value is external to every nation, no nation has to bleed deficits to provide it, and the confidence-versus-liquidity contradiction at the reserve level evaporates.
Hold that thought. We’ll come back to it with a different neutral asset in mind.
What 1971 actually changed
Here is the part that’s usually told wrong, so let me sharpen it.
The story people tell is that Nixon “ended the gold standard” and freed the dollar. What actually happened in August 1971 is subtler and more consequential. Bretton Woods had kept a partial leash: foreign governments could still redeem dollars for U.S. gold at a fixed rate. That convertibility was the detonator that turned Triffin’s dilemma into a live bomb — as too many dollars piled up abroad, nations began converting them to gold, and American gold reserves drained. The leash was strangling the system.
So Nixon cut it. Closing the gold window did not create the deficit system — it removed the discipline from it. Before 1971, a reserve issuer that ran too many deficits faced a gold run; there was an external limit, a wall you eventually hit. After 1971, that wall was gone. The United States could now run deficits without the gold-redemption risk that had made them dangerous.
The exorbitant privilege wasn’t abolished in 1971. It was unleashed — and a few years later cemented, when the petrodollar arrangements ensured the world would keep needing dollars to buy oil, recycling the surpluses straight back into U.S. assets.
And here is the accounting truth underneath your intuition, stated exactly. A currentaccount deficit is not separate from cheap borrowing — it is cheap borrowing, seen from the other side of the ledger. A current-account deficit equals a capital-account surplus by identity: if the world sends you more goods than you send back, it must be accumulating your assets in return — above all, your government bonds. The permanent global demand for dollars is permanent global demand for Treasuries, and that demand is what holds the issuer’s interest rates down. Deficit and cheap debt are not cause and instrument. They are the same fact, written twice.
Which means the privilege and the dilemma are one object. The thing that lets America borrow the world’s savings cheaply is the same thing that forces it to hemorrhage deficits and slowly hollow out confidence in its own money. You cannot keep one and escape the other. That is why the reigning issuer resists any neutral rival — not from technical skepticism, but because a neutral reserve asset would quietly repossess the privilege.
The milkshake, and its two legs
Which brings us to Brent Johnson’s Dollar Milkshake Theory — the sharpest counterargument to anyone predicting the dollar’s imminent collapse. The picture: the world has poured decades of liquidity into a giant milkshake, and when crisis strikes, the U.S. sticks in a straw and drinks it. The dollar rises in a global crisis, even as the Fed prints, even as America looks weakest.
Why would the money of the most indebted nation strengthen precisely when things break? Because the theory stands on two legs, and both matter:
Leg one — the safe haven. In a panic, capital runs to the deepest, most liquid markets on earth: U.S. Treasuries, U.S. dollars. Not because they’re pristine, but because they’re big enough to hide in. Size is the moat.
Leg two — the debt straw. This is the load-bearing leg. The world is buried in dollardenominated debt — trillions borrowed offshore in dollars by entities that don’t earn dollars. When stress hits, they must find dollars to service and roll that debt. That is a forced, structural, non-discretionary bid for dollars. You don’t buy dollars in a crisis because you like America; you buy them because you owe them.
The milkshake is powerful because leg two isn’t a sentiment. It’s a contractual chokehold.
Where Bitcoin actually bites
Now the question worth the whole essay. Can a neutral, un-issued, counterparty-free asset — Bitcoin — change Triffin and the milkshake?
The honest answer is: it changes both, but unevenly, and as an anchor before a settlement currency. Let me be precise about each. On Triffin — it reaches the core. Bitcoin belongs to the same structural category as gold: no issuer, no counterparty, nobody’s liability. A world that reserves in a neutral asset is a world where the reserve no longer has to be manufactured out of one nation’s deficit. That is a genuine dissolution of the Triffin core, not a patch on it. If the thing the world saves in is external to every state, then no state is condemned to bleed deficits to supply the planet’s savings — and the confidence-versus-liquidity contradiction at the reserve layer simply has nowhere to live. This is the same move, in monetary plumbing, that gold made before 1914: it decouples the world’s savings from a single treasury’s debt.
But the dilemma has two floors, and Bitcoin only clears one. A neutral anchor solves the reserve-asset problem. It does not, by itself, provide the liquid transaction and invoicing currency that global trade and debt issuance still require — and that role tends to fall back onto some nation’s money. Even under the gold standard, gold was the anchor but sterling was the working currency, and Britain still had to manage its balance sheet. The tension doesn’t vanish; it climbs one floor up, from the reserve asset to the settlement currency. Bitcoin today is a plausible neutral anchor — “gold 2.0,” a savings technology — not a daily unit of account. So it can retire the deepest layer of Triffin while leaving a shallower version intact.
On the milkshake — it dilutes one leg and leaves the other standing. As a neutral, liquid, un-inflatable safe haven, Bitcoin can genuinely compete on leg one: it offers a place to flee that is not the dollar and not anyone’s liability. Every crisis where capital runs partly into Bitcoin instead of solely into Treasuries is a crisis where the straw draws a little less. That thins the milkshake.
But leg two — the debt straw — is untouched. You cannot service a dollar loan with Bitcoin. As long as the world’s debts are written in dollars, the forced bid for dollars in a crisis remains, regardless of what neutral asset exists alongside it. Bitcoin can weaken the flight-to-safety pull; it cannot weaken the debt-service pull. The milkshake only truly loses its power when the denomination of the debt itself shifts — and that is a generational migration, not a market cycle. This is exactly where Triffin and Johnson turn out to be describing the same organism from two ends: the dollar debt that powers the milkshake is the flip side of the deficits that power the privilege. Same straw, drawn from both directions.
What it really does: it moves who pays
So, can Bitcoin solve the Triffin dilemma and alter the milkshake, so that the reserve currency no longer has to generate a trade deficit to let nations borrow cheaply?
The precise answer is this. A neutral reserve asset repossesses the exorbitant privilege — it severs the world’s reserve from one nation’s debt, which is the very entanglement Nixon unshackled in 1971. In doing so it dissolves the core of Triffin and dilutes the safe-haven leg of the milkshake. What it does not do is abolish the need for a working transaction currency, or release anyone from debts already denominated in dollars. It doesn’t press a button and end either dynamic. It shifts who carries the bill — away from the issuer’s forced, privilege-funding deficits, toward a system anchored in something no government owes.
And that is the same reversal I keep arriving at from every direction. Fiat lets the calendar rule your savings; a neutral anchor lets your savings escape it. The dollar system makes the world’s money one nation’s liability; a neutral reserve makes it no one’s. Each is the same motion — from being ruled by a resource to being sovereign through it.

Energy Is the New Gold
And unlike gold, you cannot conquer it. That single difference may quietly end the oldest reason we ever fought over money.
Every monetary system has a physical thing at the bottom of it — something scarce and real that the whole edifice of paper and promise ultimately points back to. For most of history that thing was metal. Men dug it out of the ground, stamped faces onto it, and then spent centuries killing each other to control where it came from. The story of money and the story of war are, for long stretches, the same story told twice.
We like to believe we left that behind when we left the gold standard. We didn’t. We just changed the metal.
The anchor we stopped talking about
When the dollar came off gold in 1971, it did not float free into pure abstraction. Within a few years it found a new anchor: oil. Priced in dollars, traded in dollars, and defended when it came to it — by the largest navy the world has ever built. The petrodollar was never “backed by nothing.” It was backed by energy, and by the willingness to project force around the places energy comes from.
This is the part the textbooks are shy about. The real collateral under modern money has been energy all along. We simply routed it through oilfields and shipping lanes and the polite fiction of the reserve currency, so that the connection stayed out of sight.
Proof-of-Work drags that connection into the open. To add a block to Bitcoin’s ledger, you must spend real electricity — burn genuine joules — and the security of the whole system is exactly the cost of that burn. There is no hidden collateral, no fleet over the horizon. The gold is not the coin. The gold is the energy that guards it.
So the instinct is right: energy is the new gold. But follow the thought one step further than the slogan, and it turns into its own opposite.
Gold you can seize. Energy you cannot.
Gold rewarded conquest for a simple reason. It sits in a fixed place in the ground, and once you have it, it is yours to hold behind walls and guns. Control the mine, control the money. Every empire understood this, and most of them acted on it.
Bitcoin mining behaves in the exact reverse. The machine that turns energy into security is mobile, and it will migrate to wherever electricity is cheapest and most wasted — a remote dam spilling water it cannot sell, a gas field flaring methane it cannot pipe out, a desert of midday solar the grid cannot absorb, a volcano’s heat at the edge of the map. You cannot seize the network by seizing a power plant, because the network is not in the power plant. Take one, and the work simply reappears somewhere else, drawn to the next cheap electron.
An anchor made of gold concentrates power in whoever holds the ground. An anchor made of mobile energy demand does the opposite: it scatters. And that is the first crack in the ancient link between money and war — you cannot conquer your way to control of a thing that has no fixed address.
The miner that switches itself off
Here is where the physics starts doing something genuinely elegant, and it has nothing to do with ideology.
A Bitcoin miner is the strangest customer an electrical grid has ever had: it will buy power anywhere, at any hour, and it can stop buying in seconds without harm. It is interruptible, patient, and utterly indifferent to when it runs. To a grid operator, that is close to a miracle.
Play it out. When power is abundant and nearly free — the surplus wind at three in the morning, the solar glut at noon that would otherwise be curtailed and wasted — the miner soaks it up. That extra demand puts a floor under the price, and a floor is precisely what makes it worth building the next wind farm or solar array in the first place. Renewables that were marginal become bankable, because there is finally a buyer for the power nobody else wanted.
Then, when power turns scarce and expensive — the heatwave, the deep-winter peak, the moment the grid strains — the miner does something no aluminium smelter or data centre can do: it switches off, instantly, and hands its electricity back to everyone else. Demand that materializes when there is surplus and vanishes when there is scarcity. The net effect of miners flicking on and off across the day is a flatter, steadier, and ultimately cheaper price curve for every ordinary household and business sharing the wire.
We spent a century treating electricity demand as a fixed burden the supply side had to chase. Mining inverts it into something flexible — a shock absorber for the grid that happens to pay for itself. Almost nothing is wasted
The common objection is that all this energy is simply burned — spent on arithmetic and thrown away. But that misreads the thermodynamics.
Every watt a miner draws comes back out as heat. This is not a defect; it is the same iron law that warms the underside of any laptop. Computation is heat. And heat is the most useful waste there is, because heat is a thing we are constantly paying to produce on purpose. Miners are already being plumbed into greenhouses that grow food through northern winters, into timber kilns, fish farms, municipal swimming pools, and district heating loops that warm whole apartment blocks. Electricity goes in, settlement security comes out — and the warmth you were going to buy anyway comes out with it, for free.
Energy in, security and heat out. Very little of it is genuinely lost.
The climate argument, honestly
Put the pieces together and a real environmental case emerges — one that is more interesting than either the boosters or the critics usually allow.
Bitcoin mining is a location-agnostic, interruptible buyer for exactly the kinds of energy our transition strand and waste: the curtailed renewable, the remote hydro, and above all the flared gas — the methane that oil operations burn off or, worse, vent directly into the atmosphere, molecule for molecule a far more violent greenhouse gas than the carbon dioxide we obsess over. Capturing that methane to run computers, instead of letting it escape into the sky, is a straightforwardly better outcome. Mining creates the paying customer that makes clean and captured energy worth developing.
Now the honest caveat, because a serious argument names its own weakness. Whether the global mining fleet is a net positive for the climate today depends entirely on the mix of power it actually runs on — and that mix is still too grey, in too many places, to plant a flag and declare victory. Anyone who tells you the question is already settled, in either direction, is selling something.
But the direction of the incentives is not in doubt. They pull relentlessly toward the cheapest energy, and the cheapest energy is increasingly the surplus, the stranded, and the wasted — the power with nowhere else to go. They pull away from the fixed, guarded, fought-over resource that made money worth a war. That vector points the opposite way from gold’s, and it has been pointing that way from the beginning.
The war that may not need fighting
Here is the whole thing in one line. Gold made money conquerable — a prize you could dig up, wall in, and defend with armies. Energy, anchored the way Proof-of-Work anchors it, makes money unconquerable — a network with no capital to sack, no mine to hold, no single grid to seize, that simply flows to the next cheap and wasted watt the moment you reach for it.
For three thousand years the physical thing at the bottom of money was something you could take by force, and so, again and again, we did. For the first time, the thing at the bottom is something you cannot take at all. You can only produce it — cleanly, if you’re clever about it — and the moment you try to hoard the source, the value drains somewhere you can’t follow.
That is not merely a better kind of money. It might, in the long arc, be one less reason to go to war.

The Money Machines Will Use
AI agents can’t hold cash, can’t pass a bank’s KYC, and won’t wait three days for settlement. The kind of value they can actually use is a short list — and it tells us something about where this is all heading.
In the first piece in this series, I argued that money is the biggest thing we take on faith: fiduciary currency works only because we trust the institutions standing behind it. In the second, I borrowed from Graeber and Menger to make a narrower claim — that the real reason impersonal money exists is the stranger problem. Credit works among people who know each other. You need neutral, trustless money precisely for exchange between strangers, where no shared ledger and no basis for trust exists.
Now hold that idea up against what’s actually happening on the internet, and something clicks into place.
We are building millions of software agents that act on our behalf — booking, buying, negotiating, paying, running errands across the network at machine speed. And every one of them is a stranger. Not just to us, but to each other and to every institution they touch. They are the stranger problem at a scale no human society ever faced. So ask the question that the whole series has been circling toward: what money can a machine actually use?
Machines can’t hold cash
Start by ruling things out, because the list of what an autonomous agent can’t touch is longer than you’d expect.
It can’t hold cash. Paper is a physical bearer instrument, and a piece of software has no hands. That sounds trivial until you realize how much of our monetary trust is still anchored in physical representation — the note in your wallet, the vault somewhere behind it.
It can’t easily open a bank account. Bank money runs on permission: identity checks, KYC, jurisdiction, a human ultimately accountable. An ephemeral agent that exists for the duration of a task can’t pass through that gate, and we probably don’t want a world where every throwaway process holds a licensed bank account. It can’t wait for settlement. Traditional bank rails clear slowly — batch processing, business hours, days for anything crossing a border. That’s tolerable for humans who plan around it. It’s absurd for a machine transacting thousands of times a second, globally, at 3 a.m. on a Sunday.
And it can’t rely on reversibility. Card payments come with chargebacks and intermediaries who can claw a payment back. For machine-to-machine commerce, you need final settlement — value that, once moved, is moved. No pending state, no maybe.
What’s left, once you subtract all of that, is a very specific kind of value: natively digital, permissionless, final, and censorship-resistant. Not a claim on a bank. Not a representation of something sitting in a vault. Value that is itself, that settles when it moves, that no gatekeeper has to approve.
That is a remarkably short list of things. And it’s the exact profile of a bearer asset on an open, permissionless blockchain.
Why this points at Bitcoin — honestly
Let me be straight, because I don’t want to sell you a clean story that reality won’t back up. Bitcoin is not the only thing that fits this profile. Stablecoins settle digitally and fast; other chains are programmable in ways Bitcoin deliberately isn’t. Any honest version of this argument has to admit that the machine economy could run substantially on digital dollars.
But notice what a stablecoin actually is: a fiduciary instrument wearing digital clothes. It’s a claim on an issuer who can freeze it, who answers to regulators, who can be leaned on to censor a transaction or reverse a balance. It solves the speed problem. It does not solve the stranger problem — the whole reason we started down this road. You are still trusting a who.
Bitcoin’s pitch, the one I made two articles ago, is that it moves trust from a who to a what — from an institution to a set of rules no single party can rewrite. For a machine economy, that stops being a philosophical nicety and becomes a functional requirement. When a billion agents transact with a billion other agents, none of them able to vet the others, you cannot route all that trust through issuers who can be pressured, jurisdictions that can disagree, or gatekeepers who can say no. You need a settlement layer that is neutral by construction — permissionless, so no agent needs approval to participate; censorship-resistant, so no authority can veto a valid payment; and final, so settlement isn’t a promise but a fact.
That’s not a claim that Bitcoin wins by default. It’s a claim that the machine economy’s requirements select hard for neutrality — and neutrality is the one property a fiduciary digital dollar can never fully have.
The Lindy bet
Here’s where Bitcoin’s short, strange history matters.
The Lindy effect — Taleb’s idea — says that for things that don’t perish, survival predicts further survival. Every additional year a protocol runs without failing at its core adds to its expected lifespan and, more importantly, to its credibility as a foundation to build on.
Bitcoin has now settled transactions reliably for over a decade and a half, through crashes, bans, forks, and every predicted death. Crucially — and this connects to the Coldcard disaster that shook self-custody this summer — the failures have been at the edges: a hardware vendor’s flawed key generation, an exchange’s collapse, a user’s mistake. The base protocol itself has kept settling, block after block, without a successful attack on its core rules. That distinction is the whole game. Peripheral things break; the ledger doesn’t.
Now layer AI on top. If autonomous agents start using a settlement layer because it’s the one neutral option that meets their constraints, that usage isn’t just adoption — it’s a Lindy accelerant. The more the machine economy depends on it, the more entrenched it becomes; the more entrenched it becomes, the more it’s trusted as a foundation; and reliability compounds. Usage begets permanence. This is how a Schelling point forms: not by decree, but by everyone independently converging on the option that no one has to be trusted to run.
That’s the bet. Not “Bitcoin goes up.” The bet is that a machine-native economy needs a neutral settlement layer, that neutrality is scarce, and that the asset which has already survived longest at being neutral has a compounding head start. (This is a thesis, not a prophecy — and nothing here is financial advice.)
Beyond money: the records machines can trust
The same logic extends past payments. An agent verifying a fact about the world faces the stranger problem again: how do you trust a record you didn’t create?
A marriage certificate, a diploma, a title deed, a provenance chain for a physical good today these live in institutional databases, each requiring you to trust the institution holding it. A record anchored to a permissionless, tamper-resistant, censorshipresistant ledger can be verified rather than trusted — checked directly, by anyone, human or machine, without asking a gatekeeper whether it’s real. That’s the honest promise behind on-chain credentials and, yes, the more serious cousin of the NFT: not a speculative jpeg, but a verifiable, unforgeable record of this specific thing exists and belongs here.
I’ll keep the caveat loud, because this part is more promise than practice: on-chain records are early, contested, and full of hard problems about what happens when the digital record and the messy physical world disagree. But the direction is the same one the money argument points in. In a world of machine strangers, verifiable beats trusted every time.
Which brings us back to the keys
If machines are going to hold and move real value, someone has to hold the keys — and hold them well. That’s why the Coldcard hack matters beyond its headline. It was a reminder that self-custody is only as strong as its weakest layer, and that “don’t trust, verify” fails the moment you stop actually verifying. The convenient version — trust the device, trust that open source means audited — took the hit. The rigorous version your own entropy, multiple vendors, multisig so no single failure is fatal — came through untouched.
A machine economy raises those stakes enormously. When agents transact autonomously, key security stops being a hobbyist concern and becomes infrastructure. The self-custody stack has to grow up fast: hardware you can verify, keys split so no single compromise drains everything, and — where it genuinely helps — AI turned loose on the defensive side, auditing old code for exactly the kind of buried entropy flaw that sat in Coldcard’s firmware for five years.
That’s the arc of this whole series, if it has one. Money is trust. Bitcoin relocates that trust from institutions to rules. The stranger problem is why neutral money exists — and AI is about to make almost every economic actor a stranger. The question isn’t whether machines will transact. It’s whether the value they use will be something anyone can control and censor, or something no one can. We’re choosing the answer right now, mostly without noticing.

The communist wing — Proudhon, Bakunin, Kropotkin, with Rousseau’s shadow behind them (“the first man who fenced a field and said this is mine began all our misery”) — says the opposite: property itself is the domination, and a propertied order without a state is just private tyranny with better branding.

Tick Tock, Next Block
On freedom, time, and the only money that doesn’t rot
There’s a word we use as if it were one thing, and it isn’t. Freedom. Ask ten people what it means and you’ll get, without them noticing, at least four different questions wearing the same coat.
There’s freedom from — the absence of anyone standing in your way. And there’s freedom to — actually having the capacity, the means, the self-command to do the thing. A person with no money is perfectly free to eat at any restaurant in the city, and really free to eat at none. The two come apart the moment you look.
But the sharpest sense, the one I keep circling back to, is older than both. The Romans called a free man sui iuris — his own master. Not “no one is bothering me right now,” but “no one holds arbitrary power over me at all.” A well-treated servant is still a servant. What makes him unfree isn’t that his master strikes him; it’s that his master could, and answers to no one for it. Philosophers call this non-domination, and once you have the concept, you can’t unsee it. Freedom isn’t the absence of interference. It’s the absence of anyone with the standing to interfere at their discretion.
Hold onto that word — discretion — because it’s the thread that runs through everything money is about.
The stack
Start building outward from the self and you get a natural ladder of sovereignty.
Money is the first rung. Money issued by someone else is money you hold at their sufferance. It can be debased by the one who prints it, frozen by the one who custodies it, made conditional by the one who processes it. Even if none of that ever happens to you, you live at their discretion — the servant with the kind master. That’s domination, sitting quietly inside your bank balance whether or not it’s ever exercised.
Land and food are the next rung down, and in one respect the deeper one. Money is only a claim on things; land and food remove the need for the claim in the one domain that can’t be deferred — survival. You cannot eat a bank balance. Grow food on ground you hold and you’ve cut out not just the bank but the grocer, the supply chain, the whole apparatus standing between your body and its needs. The Greeks had a word for the
ideal: autárkeia, self-sufficiency. Both the Stoics and Epicurus treated it as the material floor of a free life. The fewer external things you depend on, the fewer handles the world has on you.
It’s a beautiful ladder. It’s also a trap, and the trap is where this essay actually begins.
Every rung has a cost, and the cost is always the same cost. Growing your own food frees you from the grocer and chains you to the seasons. The homesteader has won his independence and spends his entire day paying for it. Self-custody frees you from the custodian and hands you, in return, the unforgiving responsibility of never making a mistake. The last twenty percent of any self-sufficiency almost always costs more freedom than it buys.
Notice what the cost is denominated in. Not money. Time.
The only currency that matters
Every sovereignty on that ladder both consumes time to maintain and buys back time from dependence. Which means they were never really separate sovereignties at all. They were all instruments for the same purchase. There is one currency underneath the whole stack, and everything else is just an exchange rate into it.
Seneca saw this two thousand years ago and was scandalized by us. It’s not that life is short, he wrote — it’s that we waste most of it and then act astonished at the end. We guard our money, which is replaceable, and we are reckless with our time, which is the one holding that never refills. You can recover a lost fortune. You can rebuild a burned house. You cannot recover an afternoon.
This is why time is the deepest layer and not merely the last one. Of every freedom we could name, it is the only one whose resource is strictly non-renewable. Money regrows. Land can be bought back. Time runs one direction and the total is both fixed and secret. Domination over your time is therefore the gravest kind of domination there is — every hour someone else directs is subtracted from a sum you can never top up.
And here the free-from / free-to split returns with teeth. Being free from claims on your hours — no boss, no obligation, empty unclaimed time — is the easy half, and a known trap. Hand most people empty hours and they fill them with noise, or invent a compulsion worse than the boss they escaped. Freedom over your time — actually steering it toward what you’ve judged worth doing — is an achievement, not a windfall. Aristotle’s word for the goal was scholē: not idleness, but the free space in which the things that are ends in themselves finally happen. Work exists, he thought, for the sake of that leisure. We’ve inverted it — we rest in order to work more.
So the whole ladder resolves into a single sentence. Money frees your claim on things; land and food free your body from the supply chain; and all of it exists to free your time — which is the only thing you were ever actually spending, and the only one you can’t buy back. Sovereignty over time isn’t the top of the stack. It’s the purpose the rest of the stack was serving all along.
Which raises the obvious question. If time is the thing money is really for — how does money relate to time in the first place?
That’s where it gets strange. And that’s where Bitcoin comes in.
Is Bitcoin anchored in time?
Tick tock, next block. The mantra suggests a clock. It isn’t one — not in the way you’d think — and the way it fails to be one is the most important thing about it.
Start with how little Bitcoin actually knows about time. The protocol has almost no sense of what o’clock it is. A block’s timestamp only has to clear two loose bars: greater than the median of the previous eleven blocks, and less than network-adjusted time plus two hours. Inside that window a miner writes more or less what he likes — timestamps can even run backwards relative to the block just before. This is not a clock you’d trust to tell you the hour.
Bitcoin’s real sense of “when” isn’t time at all. It’s block height — a plain integer that only ever counts up. The chain doesn’t ask what time is it. It asks which block are we on. That’s an ordinal clock, a logical one: it fixes before and after, sequence, order — not duration.
And the famous “tick” is not a tick. Ten minutes is the average of a random process, not a heartbeat. Real blocks arrive in thirty seconds or ninety minutes; the ten-minute cadence is emergent, and it holds only because difficulty re-adjusts every 2,016 blocks to drag the average back to target. Which means Bitcoin touches the outside world’s wall-clock at exactly one seam — the difficulty adjustment — precisely so it can ignore the calendar everywhere else. “Tick tock next block” is a rhythm the network manufactures: raw work, smoothed into the appearance of a metronome. It is not the sound of a clock keeping time.
So — is Bitcoin anchored in time? By the clock, no. It refuses to be.
Now the inversion, because there’s a sense in which it is the most time-anchored object ever built.
Satoshi’s own word for the invention, in the whitepaper, was timestamp server. The
entire purpose of proof-of-work is to establish an order no one can trust their way out of — an unforgeable proof that this existed after that. Bitcoin isn’t anchored in time. Bitcoin is a clock — but a clock whose every tick is made of irreversible physical work.
Each block is a quantity of energy burned in the real world, and it cannot be un-burned. To rewrite the past you would have to redo all of that work, faster than the entire network is doing it now — which is why the chain hardens as it lengthens, why the past grows more certain the further behind you it falls. That is not calendar time. That is the thermodynamic arrow — entropy, the one law of physics that actually distinguishes past from future. The chain is a monument of accumulated irreversibility, and irreversibility is what time physically is.
Look at how cleanly that lands on Seneca. We said time is the only non-renewable currency — the arrow that runs one way, the ledger that can’t be rewritten. Proof-ofwork is the only method ever found to represent that property in a machine. You cannot counterfeit expended energy. You cannot fake having done irreversible work. Bitcoin is, quite literally, crystallized irreversibility — it inherits time’s single unforgeable feature, that the past cannot be redone. That is the real reason it can serve as sound money. Sound money must carry the past honestly, and only something that spends real, irreversible work can.
And now the loop closes on fiat.
Fiat money is the thing that is genuinely anchored in clock-time — and that anchoring is the mechanism of its decay. The whole apparatus of interest, discounting, the “time value of money,” the per-annum inflation target — fiat is denominated in the calendar, and so it rots with the calendar. Your savings are subjected to time as a form of domination: every year, the clock taxes them, silently, by design. This is the discretion we started with, worn all the way down to the unit of account. Someone, somewhere, decides how fast your stored time evaporates.
Bitcoin reverses it, twice. It denominates its supply in blocks, not years — the halving comes every 210,000 blocks, not every four calendar years; issuance is keyed to work, not to the almanac. So it de-anchors money from the decaying clock, and re-anchors it to accumulated proof-of-work. It is the first money engineered not to rot with time and it buys that freedom-from-the-clock precisely by building its own internal clock out of the one incorruptible kind of time.
So here is the answer, as clean as I can make it:
Bitcoin is not anchored in the time you read — the calendar, the hour, the tick. It is anchored in the time you spend — irreversible work, the entropy arrow, the past that cannot be rewritten. It refuses to be ruled by clock-time so that it can be a faithful record of real time. “Tick tock next block” is not a clock keeping time. It is the sound
of time being made unforgeable.
Which is the same reversal the entire stack has been about, all the way up. Fiat lets time dominate your money. Bitcoin turns time into the thing that guards it. From being ruled by a resource, to being sovereign through it.
And that, finally, is why any of this connects to freedom. We began with sui iuris — being no one’s instrument, subject to no one’s discretion. Money that decays on someone else’s schedule is discretion exercised over the most compressed form of your own past labor: your saved time. To hold money that doesn’t rot is to take that one discretion back. Not the whole of freedom — the state’s claim still stands overhead, the wrench still exists, competence is still the price of admission. But it is the deepest layer of it that a tool can touch, because it defends the only currency you were ever really spending.
Money frees your time. Time is the thing you cannot buy back. And Bitcoin is the first money built from the same substance time is made of — so that, for once, the clock is on your side.
Tick tock. Next block.

Cult, Religion, or Honest Money?
Bitcoin promised to end unearned wealth. Then it minted a new kind. Whether that makes it a faith — or a cult — comes down to a single word: deserve.
Ask a room full of Bitcoiners a hard question about their money and watch what happens. Sometimes you get an argument. Sometimes you get a sermon. And every so often you get the thing that makes outsiders uneasy — the bright, unblinking certainty of someone who has been saved.
So let’s ask it plainly, without sneering and without kneeling: is Bitcoin a cult, a religion, or just honest money?
The answer runs straight through one of the oldest wounds in economics — the question of what wealth we actually earn.
Four people who asked what you deserve
Start with Henry George, writing in 1879. His book Progress and Poverty outsold nearly everything but the Bible in its day, and its puzzle still stings: why does poverty deepen even as societies grow richer? His answer was land. A landlord grows wealthy without building or making anything — simply by owning a plot while the community around it grows and pays him rising rent. The value was created by everyone. It was captured by the owner. George called that rent unearned, and built a whole politics around clawing it back.
Now jump a century to the other George — George Gilder, whose book carries a title that deliberately echoes the wound: Wealth and Poverty. His argument is almost the mirror image. Real wealth, he says, isn’t stuff — it’s knowledge, and its engine is the entrepreneur who creates something that didn’t exist and gives it to the world. To Gilder the enemy isn’t the earner; it’s bad money — currency so unstable that it rewards manipulation over genuine creation. Fix the money, and you free the maker. (It’s no accident Gilder later became a champion of crypto — he saw a chance to make money an honest measuring stick again.)
Then John Maynard Keynes, 1936, coining one of the great cold phrases in economics: the euthanasia of the rentier. A rentier earns simply by owning capital that’s scarce clipping interest, contributing nothing. Keynes thought that as capital grew abundant, the reward for mere ownership should fall toward zero, quietly retiring the “functionless investor.” Unearned income, painlessly put to sleep. And finally Ursula K. Le Guin, in her 1974 novel The Dispossessed, set on a world of anarchists who own nothing and have almost lost the word for property. One of its lines cuts deeper than any economist: let go of the idea that you have earned anything, let go of the whole notion of deserving, and only then will you learn to think.
Hold the four together. George and Keynes want to abolish unearned wealth. Gilder wants to honor the genuinely earned kind. Le Guin doubts the whole idea of desert. But they circle the same fire: which of your wealth did you actually earn — and which did you just receive?
The world the rentier built
Look at the economy you actually live in. To buy a home, you take on thirty years of debt. To start a business, you borrow. To keep pace with rising prices, you’re pushed to invest, to leverage, to stay in the game — because cash left in a drawer quietly loses value every year. Sitting still is punished. Borrowing is rewarded.
There’s a hard little saying for this: only with debt can you live; without debt you merely survive. In a system running on debasement and interest, thriving means taking on leverage — and the people who own the capital, George’s landlords and Keynes’s rentiers, collect the rent either way. Debt isn’t a personal failing here. It’s the entry fee.
This is the trap Bitcoin claims to spring.
Bitcoin’s promise: the honest-money answer
Here’s why Bitcoin walks straight into the middle of all this.
Its entire pitch is that it sorts the earned from the unearned. No central bank can print it, so no one debases your savings to fund themselves — the hidden tax George and Keynes both despised. Its coins come into being through proof of work — literal energy spent, literal effort. Its culture prizes saving, patience, delayed gratification. It presents itself as the first money in a long time that you cannot cheat into existence.
In that telling, Bitcoin is Gilder’s dream and Keynes’s wish at once: honest money that kills the fiat rentier — the banker and bondholder who grow rich off inflation and interest without making a thing. Save in money that can’t rot, the promise goes, and you’ll never need to mortgage your future just to stand still.
It’s a genuinely powerful story. And it’s half true.
The twist: it built a new rentier Now look at who actually got rich from Bitcoin, and how.
They bought early. They held. They did nothing else. As the world slowly arrived, the value of the scarce thing they were sitting on went up, and up. That’s the whole strategy, and the culture wears its name with pride: HODL.
Strip away the affection and describe it flatly. A person grows wealthy by owning a strictly limited asset while the community around it swells and pours in value. The gains were created by everyone who came later. They were captured by whoever owned first.
That is Henry George’s landlord, exactly. Bitcoin’s fixed supply is the ultimate scarce land, and holding it is the purest rent ever devised — you don’t even have to mow the lawn.
So Bitcoin doesn’t abolish unearned wealth. It relocates it. It euthanizes one rentier the fiat banker living off debasement — and crowns another: the early holder living off appreciation. Watch the old saying mutate to fit the new order. In the Bitcoin world, the one who held early lives; the one who arrives late merely survives. Same shape. New owner of the rent.
And that’s where the religion comes in
A system where the early and the patient grow rich for holding needs a story to make that feel right. And the story it reaches for is the oldest one there is: the doctrine of the deserving.
Listen to the language and you’ll hear the church. There’s scripture — a founding text by an absent, near-mythic figure who vanished, leaving only his word. There’s conversion — you get “orange-pilled.” There’s an end-times — the fiat system will fall and the faithful will inherit the earth. There are the saved and the damned — the holders and the “no-coiners.” There are relics and rituals — the seed phrase, the node, the cold-storage sacrament. And there’s the promise every prosperity gospel makes: keep the faith, and you will be rich.
Notice what that story quietly does. It converts luck and timing into virtue. If you got in early, you didn’t get lucky — you saw the truth, you had conviction, you deserve the reward. And if you’re poor for not holding? Well. You deserved that too, for failing to believe.
This is precisely the move Le Guin warns against. The instant you believe you deserve to be rich because you held — and that others deserve their exclusion because they didn’t — you’ve stopped thinking about a technology and started defending a faith. So — cult, religion, or honest money?
Here’s the honest answer, and it borrows from the deepest idea in this whole publication: all money is taken on faith. The dollar in your pocket is a belief propped up by institutions. Bitcoin is a belief propped up by code. Money has always been a shared story we agree to keep telling. So “is Bitcoin a religion?” is the wrong question — every currency is. The real question was never whether there’s faith. It’s what the faith is placed in, and what it does to you.
That gives us a sharper distinction than cult-versus-religion.
A religion, at its best, gives people meaning, community, ritual, a way to act under uncertainty. Plenty of Bitcoiners hold their coins exactly like that — a considered bet on sounder money, held with conviction, questioned freely, worn lightly. That’s faith doing its healthy work.
A cult is what faith becomes when it can no longer be questioned — when doubt is treason, critics are enemies, the founder’s word ends all argument, and, above all, when it starts dividing the world into the deserving and the rest. That’s not a bet anymore. It’s a religion of desert, and it has quietly stopped letting you think.
The tell isn’t the price. It isn’t even the fervor. It’s the word deserve.
The one line to keep
Bitcoin might be the most honest money ever built and a machine for minting a new deserving class — at the very same time. Which one it is for you isn’t set by the protocol. It’s set by whether you can hold the thing without needing the story.
Le Guin saw it before Bitcoin existed: drop the idea that you’ve earned it, drop the whole fantasy of deserving, and you’ll finally be free to think.
Do that, and Bitcoin is a tool — a genuinely radical one.
Refuse, and it’s a church that happens to have a price chart.

The Fiduciary Trap: Why Bitcoin Isn’t the Money You Think It Is
Every currency in your pocket is a promise made by someone else. Bitcoin asks a stranger question: what if money didn’t need a promise at all?
Reach into your wallet and pull out a banknote. Look at it closely. It is a piece of paper or, more likely these days, a number on a screen — that has no meaningful value on its own. You cannot eat it, wear it, or burn it for warmth in any quantity that matters. And yet you accept it every day, hand it over for bread and rent and coffee, because you trust that the next person will accept it too.
That trust has a name. Economists call this kind of money fiduciary — from the Latin fiducia, meaning trust or confidence. Fiduciary money has no value in itself and no full backing behind it. It works entirely because a chain of institutions and people agree that it should. A central bank issues it. A government declares it legal tender. And you, the final link in the chain, take it on faith.
For most of modern history, this has been the only game in town. Then, in 2009, someone proposed a different bargain.
What “fiduciary” really means
It helps to be precise, because the word gets thrown around loosely.
Commodity money carries value in the thing itself. A gold coin is worth something because gold is scarce and useful, independent of any authority. Melt it down and you still have gold.
Fiduciary money carries no such intrinsic value. Its worth is a claim — a promise that the issuer stands behind it. Historically, paper notes were fiduciary because banks printed more of them than they held in gold reserves, betting that not everyone would redeem at once. The paper was trusted to represent value it did not physically contain.
Fiat money, the system nearly every nation uses today, takes this to its logical end. There is no gold behind the dollar or the euro at all. The currency is valuable because the state says it is and because society agrees to keep the game running. Fiat is fiduciary money with the training wheels removed: pure trust, no backing.
This is not a criticism by itself. Fiduciary systems are extraordinarily flexible — they let central banks respond to crises, smooth out shocks, and manage economies in ways a gold coin never could. But that flexibility is also the vulnerability. The same authority that can stabilize a currency can debase it, freeze it, or inflate it away. You are trusting not just that the money will hold value, but that the people running it will restrain themselves. History is not always reassuring on that point.
So is Bitcoin fiduciary?
Here is where it gets interesting, and where a lot of casual explanations go wrong.
The instinct is to say yes — after all, Bitcoin has no gold behind it either, no factory floor, no intrinsic use. If a dollar is just collective belief, isn’t Bitcoin the same, only more so?
Not quite. The distinction that matters is not whether value rests on belief, but what the belief is placed in.
Fiduciary money asks you to trust a who — an institution, an issuer, a promise-keeper who could break the promise. Bitcoin asks you to trust a what — a fixed set of rules, enforced by mathematics and a decentralized network, that no single party can quietly rewrite. There is no central bank to over-issue it. The supply is capped at 21 million coins by code that thousands of independent nodes verify continuously. Its own community coined the phrase: don’t trust, verify. You are not asked to take anyone’s word. You can check the ledger yourself.
That makes Bitcoin something genuinely awkward to classify. It is not commodity money — there is no intrinsic use-value in a private key. But it is not fiduciary money either, because there is no fiduciary — no trusted third party whose good behavior you are betting on. Some call it trustless money; others, a digital scarcity asset in a category of its own. Whatever the label, the trust has been relocated: away from institutions, toward a protocol.
The catch nobody puts on the poster
There is a crucial asterisk, and it is where most people quietly walk back into the trap they thought they had escaped.
Bitcoin is only non-fiduciary while you hold it yourself.
The moment your coins sit on an exchange, you no longer own Bitcoin in any meaningful sense. You own an IOU — a promise from a company that they hold Bitcoin on your behalf. You are trusting an issuer. You are, once again, in a fiduciary relationship, with all its old risks: the platform can be hacked, can freeze withdrawals, can lend out your
assets, can collapse. The graveyard of failed exchanges is full of people who learned this the expensive way.
This is what the movement means by not your keys, not your coins. Self-custody isn’t a nice-to-have for the paranoid. It is the entire point. It is the difference between holding money that answers to no one and holding a claim that answers to a company. Bitcoin hands you the option to step outside the fiduciary system — but it does not force you to take it, and most people, out of convenience, hand the keys right back.
Why the distinction is worth your attention
None of this makes Bitcoin “better” money in every respect. Fiat’s flexibility has real uses; Bitcoin’s volatility and finality have real costs. Reasonable people weigh these differently, and they should.
But the fiduciary question cuts to something deeper than price charts. It asks: whose promise are you living inside? Every fiat currency is, at bottom, a bet that the institutions holding the money together will keep their word. For most of history, that was the only bet available. Bitcoin’s quiet, radical proposal is that money might not require a promise-keeper at all — that trust could be engineered into rules rather than extended to rulers.
Whether that proposal ultimately succeeds is still being decided. But understanding the distinction — trust in a who versus trust in a what — is the difference between using this technology and actually understanding what you’re holding.
And if you take only one thing away, take this: the answer to “is Bitcoin fiduciary?” is it depends on you. Hold your own keys, and it isn’t. Hand them to someone else, and you’ve rebuilt the very thing you were trying to leave behind.

There are just relays — plain, dumb servers that receive your signed posts and
pass them along.

Attending the freecitiesfoundation libertyofourlivetime conference in Prag I got to my conclusion that freedom is for the privileged with capital. Not for the Blue Collar wage slave humans , who are in depth and find it hard to find the ends meet every day. How can Bitcoin be the difference as an open distributed ledger? The on an off ramps are controlled, knowing your pupkey tells me how many sats you control??????

The word "सत्" (Sat) in Sanskrit translates to "truth," "being," "existence," or "reality" in English. It is a fundamental concept in Indian philosophy, often signifying the absolute or the essence of existence. #BITCOIN has 100000000 #Sats ⚓️ in time!!
