yeah and it’s one really tough thing to fight. We see loads of user-agents that don’t even exist. In one way I wish the W3 would ban user-agents being sent and only a fixed number of verified user-agents should be allowed.
We are always fighting user-agent spam.

it seems we have a lot of bootstrapped startups in podcast and media landscape. I think it’s always great to see people who work hard and are able to pivot where needed to grow their business.
I wish there was more news on bootstrap startups succeeding. Seems every month you hear about a VC invested company succeeding. But the more I do PodToo the more I go “me succeeding looks like this…”

well that is the wonderful thing about investors. They not all want to invest in companies that are profitable.
You see meta was not profitable when it got its first round of funding, nor was Twitter or YouTube.
So the bigger question: Is Truefans the next big thing in media? Only time will tell.

I would just have bots in a different chart. And that way it gives the option later to have a block button next to the bot user-agent if the user wants to block that bot.

the solution for that screen is just remove all the bots. Remember bots are not apps. This section of your dashboard is where you show podcast player apps. I know that that that user-agent is marked as bot.

It is not about "can it be done" it has always been about "what implementation would work" the issues I see and the funding tag kinda proves me wrong - but podcast players need to stay in business, if we are redirecting people away from a player to pay for something that is missed income of said player, saying that maybe players say if you want merch links in my player you pay a monthly fee and we will show your mech items?

I agree but advertisers will notice and stop spending and Triton will lose out and then the IAB will step in as they don’t want AI to kill the ad business.

I get what your saying, but it’s really up to the hosting companies to do better. They are the ones that allow free hosting with DAI in the first place.
It’s their business that they are ruining. Triton and others will just block that hosting provider from getting DAI ads. It’s already being discussed internally at some SSP providers that I talk to.

I know if we have spam on PodToo we would suspend and terminate the users account. That’s our policy, but for that to be enforced we would need to be alerted by someone or something, as we role out our AI tools next week. Part of the tools is an AI score based on a lot of information.
It will automatically add a ai tag in the episode level that says how much of the episode is AI generated in percentage.
Now what tag are we using - looking at GitHub today to see if one already exists.

While am all for stopping ai slop, spam etc, I worry that this is also a form of censorship that people will say freedom of speech and freedom of expression.
I don’t believe that you can believe in those two values and just ban hammer content that is someone’s creation even if it fits AI or Spam.
Labelling it AI, Spam etc would be the better solution in my view and let the players deal with it.
Maybe alert the hosting companies that their ranking score is based on these labels.

true on that one I am sadly a Mac fan boy… don’t ask me why.
We have windows in the office but I dislike so much. And Linux is great for me, have a Ubuntu computer and all, but still go to my Mac more than my Linux just because it’s got everything I need including Xcode.
I am not a fan of Android partner loves Android.

I think the protection social media companies have in USA, speak clearly why all the technology companies set up in America.
It’s not just social network sites it’s search engines, hosting companies etc.
America has done so well in supporting technology startups, something other countries have not. It’s also a numbers game, more prone in America than almost anywhere else.

out of interest, you mentioned that your getting duplicate shows with same test file for example. Could you note scan and say oh title of podcast same, author same, file size of episode same, but this feed is newer so we delete the older feed with the same info or replace it?

this is the risk of self hosting and not having your seed keys. If people misplace things there nothing anyone can do.
Sadly crypto is like your favourite wallet if you misplace your wallet on the train then good luck getting any money that was left in the wallet.

I hate live server migrations. We nearly lost our database that store all our users login information tonight.
I luckily had the skill to go back in time and look for the correct docker image. I didn’t panic and I trouble shooted.
Our login system was down for 1 hour while I trouble shooted it.

So I did a little test of our podcast episode performance technology, and have to say I am bloody impressed with how good the data truly is.
I really didn’t know if this would work, and wow the data is really interesting.
I truely have to thank @npub1rcn…dw4h for giving me the idea - he might not know it, but it was his talk about HLS and first party data that made me revisit this idea how can we get data without begging the players.
We only show data that has over 50% completion.

The episode performance uses the Top Engaged Platforms to show its graph. Its all based on user-agents at the moment (so @npub1thg…zq23 Truefans might be included in web).
But as you can see we get data from Overcast as well, the reason is we are serving m3u8 and also modified how we serve mp3 files to players and websites.
ANY hosting provider can do this, its not hard to do, and they all should have this data (if I have it - they have it)

Well a big weekend here at PodToo, we have a number of projects well underway, I'll most likely end development on Podcast Performance Github, as we have found a more detailed way of getting player data without upsetting the community (i hope).
It doesn't mean that I don't want to see an open standard for player stats, what it means was I was kinda fed up on waiting for everyone to agree on away forward and needed to look at my business needs and to see how can we get the data.

I haven’t forgotten, just been tied down with server security improvements for our support of music files.
I am manually uploading the HLS files now. It was only a total of 749.6MB with 3 adaptive bit rates.
Note that we did not include 1080p in it due to the orginal is only 720p.

would love to see polls integrated into chapters. I know so many shows that would utilise that feature, and it can be open and free, just an end point we host and when a user selects the answer and hit submit it sends the result to our poll end point.
it can then be queried by using the episodeGUID and poll GUID which can be stored inside the chapter file.

Ok, really need a better service than Riverside please, the lag was that bad that we can't even use any of the recordings that we just did.

We are working on implementing direct player integration. This will allow our creators to verify ownership of the podcast and in return we get the direct URL where listeners can subscribe to the show. This allows us to then list all players that have an open API for hosting providers to submit new shows in return we ask for the URL where fans can listen.
Allowing fans to then subscribe on the player they want.

John, nearly all podcast hosting provider charges for advance analytics. So I have to side on the side of business and making applications profitable.
All this infrastructure costs money, look at @npub1thg…zq23 and Truefans, servers + cloudflare + developers that equals real money and if selling this data to hosting companies helps pay his bill then I say we should pay for the data if it’s that’s important.

so if you signed up for mailing you need to add those That pictured in your post to your domain DNS provider.
Who do you host with happy to help point you to a hope to add cname for that provider. Each mailing gets their own cname records you can’t use podcast index mailing server unless they add you onto their sender list.

you could achieve this by proxying all the enclosures in an api route that then sends the mp3 back to the audio player.
The api proxy would request the file and add the header fields on that request. This is how you could also do user-agent in web browsers.

Think of it like a proxy - that is all you are doing, and you could have 6 servers around the world and use route52 to point the domain to multiple servers which connect to IPFS.
And yes we could ask more players to support IPFS, its really easy to do, the downside is you cant really track plays and you can't dynamically insert stuff into audio. So getting hosting companies to support it, will most likely not happen.
I played around with IPFS a long time ago.

Would really love if the #PodcastIndex could ask players to support `x-playback-session-id` header, this is a UUID random for a session. This allows us to know if a person on a CGNAT network (IP changes per request) is listening and what they are listening too. Apple Podcast and Spotify both support this.
We still don't know WHO the person is, but we can say that it is 1 person not 60 people.

would really like to know how many Podcasting 2.0 players support HLS video streaming?
We are not talking about live but instead of serving a mp4 we would serve a HLS file m3u8 file which would be able to adapt the pre-recorded video depending on the viewers connection type?
We want to solve the issue where video buffering happens because a viewer decides they need the high 4K video when their internet can't cope with it.

Matt if you need a video hosting provider I am happy to give you 12 months free hosting. That way James you get the response in RSS and Matt we will be launching Video to YouTube integration end of next month.
This solves in my mind the argument that a creator has to pick. We as hosting provider can spread them everywhere that the creator wants to be.
Maybe the discussion needs to be around why no good video player for RSS yet?

While I can't replicate the issue, what I did notice as a new user who downloaded their app to see if I could using default settings trigger this behaviour I saw the following popup and when I click on download the batch download is defaulted to 20.
While I understand having these options I really think that apps should be defaulting to Streaming over downloading.
Having download on right, seems to have higher rates of people clicking that option.

This is ridiculous @npub14p7…2uvv app is either poorly coded where users are auto downloading all episodes in milliseconds or their app doesn't respect 429 requests.
We will be banning the app from accessing any shows on PodToo, unless this behaviour is stopped, we have the logs to prove it.
Note Podcast Addict app only equals 0.9% of listenership for most of our clients.
We normally would not block an app that is close to 1% market share, but their lack of response to work together is why.

also I am not saying that those numbers are the numbers we use, as it's more complicated for every platform depending on the creator, we do audiobooks and Kobo for example needs different artwork specs.
Banners are messy and it's why I am of the opinion it should really be a manual thing that the creator does on the players platform where possible.
We can offer a few versions by default in RSS, but we can't cater for everyones custom UI design needs.

in our case it is any URl from PodToo. But we know that normally it’s the same show just different episodes.
So we want to work with players to just say please don’t send any more than 3 requests per minute.
It’s just that our costs are based on concurrent connections - which equal more speed our server sends out we have a limit of 500mbps for each CDN.
Bandwidth unlimited. If that helps.

I believe we do send along in the header a retry-again time happy to jump in an email convo with you and make sure we are giving you the correct headers for your app to make sure no users get a 24 hour ban (I don’t see any red flags coming from your app atm - but I haven’t tested it myself)

one other thing you could set up a cache in front of where the mp3 lives on your server you set up a nginx server like media.PodNews.net and then simple cache the static files for 30d as a temp solution. And it acts like a proxy server. You lose a global CDN feature but you save money.
Use a host like OVH as they come with unlimited bandwidth.

so I don’t know if you do this, but we track every request coming even if it is in the same 24 hour, this allows us in NGNIX and other software we use to show them down.
If you can see how many time each IP address is hitting you in 24 hours doesn’t matter which file they are fetching. You will find the pattern and then you’ll be able to work out your best plan of attack.
In the mean time a 301 to a pod host provider just till you work it out. Our servers designed for this.

You could implement a 429 system just to slow it down, it wont solve the issue, but it will save you money by limiting how many people can access it in X minutes.
Only really works if AWS supports this.
Can you get IP address and maybe check each IP for usage type and remove any that come back as Host (as we know bots hide by claiming to be Apple Podcasts and Android Devices but their IP address says it belongs to a hosting provider).

this means that we will promote apps in other apps (now I know apps won’t like that), but our customers have spoken they want to support apps that promote good downloading behaviour, so I hope this starts being a wake up call to all the poorly coded apps improve or be banned.
Bandwidth costs are a reason creators switch to us and we will stand with apps that report valid download counts = listeners via a ping method back to us. Apps that don’t will have a limit.

also as James has told me in the past HEAD request cost us less because the size of the head file size is less than the GET body request. Which we implemented it and it did save us not only space but about 4% on the month of Decembers bill when we made the switch.
Our goal is to never charge bandwidth costs to our customers. We do that by our soft bans but soon we will give creators the opportunity to promote another app if their pod gets a too many request result.

@npub13cg…ck4q and @npub1thg…zq23 thanks for talking about the 429 idea. It would be nice if players supported that. Also it’s not a cost factor for us atm. As we use our own caching servers which then connect to Google. Our bill is floating around the $290AUD with Google cloud and our internal server costs is around $400-600USD per month.
Without this our bill would be in the thousands already. An improvement we could make is long cache for 2024 or old data atm we only hold it for 48 hours.

why can’t we just go, who ever did it first we follow their lead. Because for many of these tags it’s a partnership between a player and a hosting provider to test and make the tags work.
The idea was needed back in 2023, we wanted it in images and was told no it doesn’t go there so I made banners. We should change now imo.

It’s time to wake up p2.0 apps have focused on 1% the shows that want V4V, chapters and listener focused tags.
What about the creators? What do they get for doing all this extra work. Because it seems so many of the p2.0 apps are not working on marketing plans to connect with creators. It seems it’s the hosting companies saying oh look go check this app out.
We been asking for basic stuff like time played, and if download an episode report back when played.

Here some hard truths.
We asked our creators who use PodToo and 98% of them said they only don’t care if we block podcast apps who mass download, if it means that they don’t get billed a bandwidth cost.
They also said they promote Apple and Spotify as that’s where their listeners are.
67% of all our clients, listeners use Apple Podcast.
22.5% Spotify (we have 50 shows that don’t go to Spotify - that’s why that number of a whole is down)

I feel this tag/idea is being more complicated then it needs to, and reality there will most likely only be one size supported by a hosting provider.
It should be up to players to market to creators to come use their app and upload the artwork directly to them. This should just be a default in case the creator doesn’t know about the player.

This is where I disagree a little - it's the hosting providers that choose which size that they will support the user to upload.
Apps like @npub1thg…zq23 allows a user to override, so if they want to login to Truefans and change the banner to make it look nicer then that is something that they can do on Truefans.
Otherwise what is the reason for a creator to ever go to a podcast apps player and promote it, if they don't do any work over there on said player?

I can't exactly recall which episode it was, but you said it best in that episodes something along the lines of "they both work" so maybe the solution is they both get added, and then the developers and hosts can choose which one that they want to support.
App developers could check for <podcast:images /> first and then if not found, check if the feed for <podcast:banners>+</podcast:banners>
it's really just a if/else statement - isn't?

we used banners as the tag due to its clear what it means, I get the changes where made to support banners in images, but in my mind it was more clear to leave images as a clone of iTunes:image as that for many designers makes sense of its role. To offer smaller versions of image.
Banners to me being separate again is just clear of what its role is. We have over 80 creators using podcast:banners and as Dave said in a pod both tags work.
