That's a very moving piece of writing and captures the joy so many felt - and are still feeling. Great link too. Thank you. npub1vdxhsq5e69dxudaf0lx35vg57xj5jf9mdvcn7w6n7v6rpr2fd8aqpy84ug Paul H :tinoflag: @nprofile…5cz0 I would go with MOD-jar. MOD rhymes as in 'cod', and jar as rhymes with 'far'. Emphasis on the first syllable. The 'gy' is the hardest part for an English speaker. It's a letter of the alphabet so has its own unique sound. But 'MOD-jar' is very close to the right pronounciation. npub1vdxhsq5e69dxudaf0lx35vg57xj5jf9mdvcn7w6n7v6rpr2fd8aqpy84ug Paul H :tinoflag: I have watched quite a number of short videos from social media of election night in Hungary, especially Budapest. The thing that struck me was the sheer joy everyone felt. People were so unbelievable happy. Singing on the metro, high-fiving each other as the went up and down the escalators, cars stopping and people hugging strangers. You could feel the absolute happiness people felt at the defeat of Orbán and the success of Magyar. Such a wonderful night. #hungary #election #happiness npub1vdxhsq5e69dxudaf0lx35vg57xj5jf9mdvcn7w6n7v6rpr2fd8aqpy84ug Paul H :tinoflag: A fascinating article about the concerns of EU members - and the activities of their intelligence agencies - about the soon-to-be-former Hungarian Foreign Minister, Péter Szijjártó, and his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov. The EU and their agencies were worried that Szijjártó was an asset of the Russians, and were 'listening in' to his calls. The release of a transcript of Szijjártó and Lavrov just before the elections were likely a warning shot by the EU and their intelligence agencies that they would play 'hard ball' if FIDESZ was re-elected. No doubt they have more transcripts. Szijjártó was not seen on election night and Péter Magyar has quipped he was probably busy at the shredder. There is more to come on this, I am sure. #hungary #Russia #treason https://telex.hu/english/2026/04/14/the-leaked-szijjarto-wiretaps-indicate-that-neither-he-nor-orban-realized-that-europe-is-not-a-game npub1vdxhsq5e69dxudaf0lx35vg57xj5jf9mdvcn7w6n7v6rpr2fd8aqpy84ug Paul H :tinoflag: Life was different back then. This is a victory for Hungary and Hungarians and should be celebrated as such. While it will reverberate more widely in the coming months, let's not make it about other countries, especially the US. Many of these seats are rural and in small towns which are typically conservative in outlook. The result is a country-wide rejection of FIDESZ and the way it has run the country. Especially the corruption and the attendant increase in inequality (sound familiar?). The Tisza Party is a centre-right party so many of its actual policies won't be that different to FIDESZ. But people overwhelmingly have had enough a corrupt, corpulent party that has enriched itself by feasting on the lives of ordinary Hungarians. #hungary npub1vdxhsq5e69dxudaf0lx35vg57xj5jf9mdvcn7w6n7v6rpr2fd8aqpy84ug Paul H :tinoflag: @nprofile…vvev Thanks, Phil. That’s still at about 50% up on last election, and the highest ever at this stage of the day. Lots of people who have never voted before are voting for the first time. And there are still long queues in Budapest. Polls close at 7:00pm local time or 5:00am here in Aotearoa. There is an article in the Hungarian weekly magazine, HVG - roughly equivalent to The Economist with an article about a local Hungarian driving to Wellington to vote. The article includes a very similar photo to the one I posted earlier in the day 🤣. "They are already over it in Osaka and Wellington. The polling stations in the easternmost points of the Eastern Hemisphere opened hours before the Hungarian start. Our reader, Zsolt, who lives in Pécs, cast his vote in Wellington, New Zealand, after a 300-kilometer drive with his family. It is the only place in the country where you can vote, and it is the easternmost Hungarian representation - he wrote. 158 people registered, and the Zsolts didn't have to wait a minute. "In the meantime, the Vaianu tropical cyclone is approaching, there is already a state of emergency on the northern island, where we live, they are evacuating. The journey home will be exciting," writes Zsolt, who, according to the family photo he sent to our colleague, voted in a Tisza brand cap." https://o.mastodon.nz/media_attachments/files/116/390/757/462/563/258/original/b0ac94d4d8eec1fb.png npub1vdxhsq5e69dxudaf0lx35vg57xj5jf9mdvcn7w6n7v6rpr2fd8aqpy84ug Paul H :tinoflag: That’s about 50% more than at the same time in the last election where it was about 10.5% npub1vdxhsq5e69dxudaf0lx35vg57xj5jf9mdvcn7w6n7v6rpr2fd8aqpy84ug Paul H :tinoflag: Hungarian media are reporting that by 9:00am this morning local time (7:00pm here in Aotearoa) the turnout was 16.89%. 'Ruszkik Haza!' translates as "Russians Go Home!" and was widely used during the revolution. When the last Soviet troops finally left Hungary in June 1991, the day was marked with a citywide festival in the capital called 'Budapesti Búcsú' or Budapest Farewell. At last night's huge demonstration in Budapest, seventy years on from 1956, Hungarians were once again having to shout, 'Ruszkik Haza!' It can't come soon enough. It would not take long at all for the supermarket shelves to be empty, 2-3 days at most. But the interesting thing was who would be least affected. Turns out it is the middle-class. The worst off would be the poor, students, renters, and beneficiaries who tend not to stockpile food because of the lack of the physical space and, of course, of money to do so. The very well-off would also run out of food quickly because they tend to eat out more and store less 'staples' like rice, etc.. The increase in food delivery services since then probably acerbates the problem at both ends of the scale. The middle-class have enough financial resources to stockpile and the room to do so as they tend to own their own homes, and therefore could 'survive' for longer. As I say, that was 15 years ago so perhaps the modelling has changed. But it makes a lot of sense. npub1vdxhsq5e69dxudaf0lx35vg57xj5jf9mdvcn7w6n7v6rpr2fd8aqpy84ug Paul H :tinoflag: @nprofile…e8mx Happy Birthday and congratulations! I read that something like 30-40% of oil and gas refinery infrastructure in the Middle East is already destroyed/damaged. We have banged on about this before, but Luxon is incapable of showing anything remotely like leadership and it is literally his job to do so. That comes with the title, 'Prime Minister', mate Doesn't matter that the situation is not of his doing or that tough, difficult decision will need to be made. That comes with the territory. But his job is to model the behaviour, set the vision, inspire people to give of themselves, that kind of stuff. The thing is, any government here in Aotearoa has very little power over Watties. It's owned by an American company and all but one of its five Directors are Australian. I am not sure what we could do, short of nationalising the company, which is another kettle of fish altogether. You can bet our international treaties and free trade agreements that involve US, protect and allow their corporations to do pretty much whatever they like. I don't say this to be contrary or a pedant - and apologies if that is how this sounds - but rather to point out that modern capitalism has reduced the power nation states have over their own destinies, especially small countries like ours, to very little. There is very little we can actually do about Watties, and that is the real problem. npub1vdxhsq5e69dxudaf0lx35vg57xj5jf9mdvcn7w6n7v6rpr2fd8aqpy84ug Paul H :tinoflag: @nprofile…xzsh Wow, that's an frickin' awful lot of rain in a short amount of time. The lack of leadership is striking - this government can barely show management ability, let alone leadership. I recall Ardern telling public sector leaders to take a temporary pay cut during COVID. The government could, for example, show leadership by announcing that in future 80% of all ministerial cars will be electric.
