We now publish tar'd up shallow git clones you can use with your CI. Please carefully read the safety caveats and use the script we provide to make sure you're not getting something malicious:

Thank you for your kind offer, but a solution where we have to send all of our traffic through a third-party entity is a non-starter.

Blog post published, with all the funky graphs:

Out of 6M+ daily cgit requests, 33% get past Anubis proof-of-work challenge at difficulty 5, then a small percentage gets denied because they requested an invalid commit, and ~2M gets actually served. Of them, fewer than 2% are reasonably human -- and that's with very generous assumptions.

Scrapers are out in force in the past week or so. I'm sorry if i've not been responsive to your emails -- I'm trying to figure a way to deal with that. We're currently sustaining about 10,000 requests per minute just to git.kernel.org per single Toronto node, or about 40,000 requests per minute across all git.kernel.org nodes. These are not light hits -- these are random commit-id requests that require running git, or diffs, or plain patch downloads.
Like I said, the bots are solving Anubis difficulty 5, though we manage to weed out about 45% of all requests through Anubis itself, plus some analysis of the requests (some cgit query string combinations are unlikely to be ever hit by humans). Still, we're looking at about 7M requests per day that are attributable to bots. That's a guesstimate, because these bots look and act just like real browsers.
If you answer with "why don't you just..." I am going to be cross with you. There is no "why don't you just" here.

Here's an asciinema recording of the current state of b4 review:
https://asciinema.org/a/795683
It shows patchwork integration, reviewing series, taking series, sending thank-you notes, etc.
It's still rough around the ages, but it's doing useful things. I hope to release it as "pre-alpha" soon.

mirrors.kernel.org is down because it threw 2 disks in a RAID-6 array and then ground itself to a halt. I'm trying to resuscitate it. Please use mirrors.edge.kernel.org (it's pointing at our only remaining server that is now up, in Amsterdam).
We need more redundancy for these systems. After exiting Equinix, we are reduced to just 2 nodes (and hence, we're now down to 1 until I rebuild the RAID array on the one that's currently offline).
If you can donate us a server with at least 70TB of space and lots of bandwidth, I'd like to hear from you, but it has to come with hosting, as we don't have any physical datacentres any more and must rely on the kindness of strangers to host them.

Just came back last night from winter camping with a bunch of scouts. We ran the usual challenge of building snow shelters and sleeping in them, which was particularly tough as it was -25°C overnight. Out of 14 scouts who went out to sleep in the cold, only 4 came in to the heated cabin and 10 others stayed out till morning, which was a new high number. When it was similarly cold two years ago, only 3 scouts out of 15 stayed the night. I like to think it's due to better preparedness and better guidance from us scouters and not just due to better gear. 💪

Saying our last goodbyes to Equinix servers. First as packet.net and then as Equinix Metal, they served kernel.org wonderfully over the past 7 years. With the deadline looming on Dec 31, we're powering them off today. They've been replaced by Akamai and servers.com, (though we had to downscale our mirrors service from 4 worldwide nodes to just two, one in NA and one in EU).

I once again ask you to please stop using gmail for mailing lists.
Attached is a screenshot of *just one* of the 4 nodes delivering various kernel mailing list traffic with a deferred queue of 100,000+ messages, all for gmail.
We are currently sitting on about 500,000 deferred messages, all for gmail. I am very, very close to just banning gmail addresses from large lists.

I'm sad to say that we're following the lead of many others and putting in proof-of-work proxies into place to protect ourselves against "AI" crawler bots. Yes, I hate this as much as you, but all other options are currently worse (such as locking us into specific vendors).
We'll be rolling it out on lore.kernel.org and git.kernel.org in the next week or so.

Wayland terminal poll-off:

2024-11-12 21:30:42 GMT

`x.x.x.x - - [10/Nov/2024:00:02:37 +0000] "GET / HTTP/1.1" 301 162 "-" "okhttp/4.9.0"`
You know what's interesting about this log line? It repeats 56,686,963 times in www.kernel.org logs for yesterday, across 4 nodes. That's about 700 times a second, and this has been going on for months.
These requests aren't intentionally malicious -- they issue a simple `GET /`, receive their 301 redirect, and terminate the connection. From what I can tell, this is some kind of appliance or software installed on mobile clients that uses "can I reach www.kernel.org" as a network test.
This wouldn't be that big of a deal -- a single plaintext "GET /" that triggers an immediate 301 is very cheap for us to generate, but the number of these requests has been steadily growing.
If you have any idea what this is and how to make it stop, please reach out?

Heh, you're trying to convince a "Russian identified person" in one of the senior positions in the Linux Foundation that the Linux Foundation is being unfair towards "Russian identified people." It's pretty hilarious.
I'm not a lawyer and I don't speak for the LF, so I won't give you any kind of "official comment." But here's my view of it.
The people removed from maintainer positions were identified as employed by companies on the US and EU sanctions list. These companies are directly involved in the Russian military complex and therefore are directly complicit in war crimes being committed daily in Ukraine. If these maintainers want to think that they are "just techies helping improve the Linux kernel," or that "they are outside of politics," then they are fucking wrong. If they work for companies that develop weaponry or logistics used by the Russian military, they are complicit in Russia's war crimes, and I hold them responsible at a very personal level -- and that's my official comment on the situation.

Periodic reminder of a few facts:
1. Ukraine was a nuclear power after the dissolution of the USSR. It had nuclear weapons under its full control.
2. The USA convinced Ukraine to transfer their nuclear weapons to Russia. In exchange, the USA signed a treaty *guaranteeing* Ukraine's territorial sovereignty if Ukraine gives up its nuclear weapons.
3. In 2014, when Russia invaded and illegally annexed Crimea, the US under Barack Obama defaulted on their guarantee.
4. We cannot seriously discuss any other treaties with Russia if we continue to ignore the fact, that such treaties were repeatedly broken by Russia, with the powerful nations offering security guarantees looking the other way.
