Perfectly understandable why nostr started out being only about nostr and Bitcoin, makes perfect sense, but that it stayed this way for years is a bit concerning 🤣

I think follower counts have their merits, but I see the problems with it. A good replacement for a general follower count could be "number of followers that I follow too." That is not as easy to game and is way more meaningful than just random people following someone.

GM nostr. Who is excited for the Apple Keynote today? Not in the market for new hardware right now, but can’t wait to see the new iOS and macOS. Hopefully some of the AI tools will be available in Europe, it was rumored that they might be on macOS and only iOS will be left out due to regulations.

There are a few good ones, all PC game ports, but for the most part, the only way to play good games on mobile is through emulators. I have a Steam Deck, so I don't do that on phones or tablets for the most part, but I do like using ScummVM for old point & click adventures on mobile, it's even available for iPad.

It would be cool if everyone had their own local relay that would use this approach but not to let other people write, but to automatically cache your own posts and those from your web of trust. Other people can then get any posts of people you interact with from your relay. That would make it work a bit like the gossip protocol in Secure Scuttlebutt where you can share all the posts you downloaded with others, making the network much more decentralized and less reliant on big relays everyone uses which would then mainly be used for discovery. Not sure if something like this exists for Nostr yet, I've been away for a year 🤣

The "Summarize YouTube video" AI prompt for Raycast is so good. It's insane that it doesn't come with it by default. I highly recommend adding it.
It lets you get a quick overview of any YouTube video so you either don't have to watch it but can quickly get the gist in a few seconds, or helps you decide if it is worth watching.

Maybe they won't stay there for long and look for something better.
I waited for a Bluesky invite for a year or so, but never received one. I tried again with a different email (a disposable iCloud mail) and was able to gain access after a couple of days, so for some reason they must block my email provider.
After finally being able to try it out, I immediately encountered a bunch of racist posts within the first few seconds of browsing. I quit the app and never used it again. For some reason Bluesky is a cesspool, this stuff is usually rare and not something you see as your very first experience, even on fully anonymous and decentralized platforms. Even on 4chan I didn't see stuff like that in the first few seconds.

Don't really know why I completely went AWOL on here for over a year. Time moves so fast. I did have to cut down on my non essential computer time because of health issues, so I didn't do much social networking in general, but that's not really it 😄
I've seen there are some new Nostr clients (trying Primal right now) and Alby did some changes so I had to reconnect my wallet, hope it all still works.

Tastes really good and the process is quick and simple enough that I can do it half asleep in the morning. Stumbled upon it by accident on Amazon while searching for something to make cold brew, had never heard of it before. This seems to combine some of the characteristics of both cold (better taste) and hotly brewed coffee so it’s perfect for what I wanted since I prefer hot coffee.

Got a bit hooked on survival games lately and bought Volcanoids in a sale. You have a drill ship as your mobile base that you can build upgrades for to make it longer and outfit it with gun turrets and refineries and then when the volcano erupts (which it does every half hour or so) or when too many enemies approach, you tell it to bury down into the earth and then you can drive the ship underground. Really cool idea, the only game of its kind as far as I know.

Twitter censorship has become worse in some regards since Elon took over, I've seen lots of small to medium sized YouTubers get censored lately and they say it's worse than it's been before. I do believe Elon (to a reasonable degree) when he says he wants free speech but he does not seem to have things at Twitter under control. He is probably trying to do too many things at the same time. I think decentralized systems are really the only way out of this mess, nobody should have even the ability to censor someone else's speech. I don't like it when people are rude to each other, I'm a very polite person myself, but censorship is pure evil and I have yet to see a justification for it that actually makes sense when you think it through.

The last Eragon book. I had to know how the story ends. Until I read that book, then I wanted to forget how it ended. Actually that reminds me of the last Harry Potter book. Such a great series of books, until that last book, which basically took everything that happened until that point and then shot it in the face point blank. Artemis Fowl as well. Hmm… I am beginning to see a pattern here.
All final books in a series are terrible and should be avoided at all costs! Might just be Young Adult novels, can’t actually think of any other where I really hated the last book. Or maybe I’m just not as deeply invested anymore compared to when I was younger so I just shrug it off now and put the book away to read/do something else.

I’ve been using the Arc browser for two months now and I’ve come to really like it. It was hard to move away from bookmarks at first but there are so many little nice things in Arc that make it really pleasant to use. I didn’t even plan to move away from Brave which I also really liked, but I have not gone back yet (only on mobile since there is only an iOS version right now, no Android). They have this feature where it asks you to make Arc your default browser for a week. Without that I would never have given it a chance for more than a few hours, really great idea.

So far every single game I tried on #PSVR2 has been an absolute banger, might just be the novelty of VR as I’ve never tried it before, but I’m at the point where I have a hard time going back to 2D games because VR is just so good.

Played Walking Dead Saints and Sinners on #PSVR2 today and it’s a lot different than I expected. I thought it’s a silly action/horror shooter but it’s actually a survival game where you do quests and collect resources. It’s really good so far. Couldn’t play long though, my shoulder still hurts from going a bit overboard with Pistol Whip.

Been using bone conduction headphones for half a year now because my ears really don’t like earplugs anymore. Only downside compared to earplugs is the titanium band at the back, makes lying or leaning back against a headrest a bit uncomfortable. Raycast now has GPT4 built-in (has to be enabled in settings)
https://www.raycast.com/changelog/1-49-0
I rarely used ChatGPT before, but Raycast makes it so quick and easy to ask questions that I’ve been using it a lot more.
I’ve also started trying out Copilot in Visual Studio Code since so many devs are raving about it. I still get code suggested that always has at least one big error (Flutter dev, probably not enough code out there yet for it to work as well as with other languages), but it does make you quite a bit faster as long as you know what you’re doing, so it is still quite useful.

2023-03-17 18:27:12 GMT

The Warp terminal now also has AI built in, which is cool, but I’m starting to think it might be a better idea for GPT to offer a subscription that you can use in all apps instead of having one subscription per app. I’m already using 4 apps with (some free but soon to be) paid AI features available, it’s just going to get worse. Just like streaming services. You want to watch the newest movies and TV series? Well, just pay for a subscription to… Prime, Netflix, [insert ten other services here] for the small price of [all your money].

2023-03-17 00:28:57 GMT

Finally got access to the Raycast AI beta. I’ve only used ChatGPT (free version) and the new Bing before which are both a bit slow to answer. Raycast is instant and is just a Command+Space away, feels so much nicer for quick questions!
And you can also create AI commands that you can use on selected text in any app, like shorten this text or improve the writing style.

Horizon does not look as good but there is a lot more going on so that’s to be expected and it is quite fun. Still trying to figure out how you’re supposed to aim with the bow, I’m sure there must be some trick I’m not getting. Right now I’m just hitting the targets by trial and error.

It will be really interesting to see what people come up with. Can’t wait to see someone try making a Nostr Wikipedia.
I was trying to think of an idea myself for something quick and easy to try out for Nostr that is a novel use of the protocol. Right now I’m playing around with an app to collaboratively write „Choose your own adventure“ games on Nostr.
Adds 3 new Kinds.
1) New story, with the ability to make it public for anyone to edit or with a list of people who are allowed to edit.
2) A new block (a block can have text, image, video and choices attached).
3) A new node (nodes are branches, where you end up after a choice)
Blocks are linked to nodes, nodes are linked to stories.
Not a crowd pleaser, interactive fiction is not that popular, but it is something different :)

Hopefully that would also mean they make it decentralized from the start, make it compatible with Nostr and maybe even multiple protocols.

What is really cool is that it can easily translate American recipes into the metric system so I can understand them :) And it can describe a computer as Terry Pratchett would:
"Ah, my dear friend, let me tell you a tale of the magical devices we call computers. They are powerful wizards, capable of performing incredible feats of magic with the mere flick of a switch.
You see, within the computer lies a cunning imp known as the central processing unit, or CPU for short. This imp is the brains of the operation, directing all the other components like a master conductor.
The CPU is constantly busy, receiving instructions from a spellbook known as memory. These instructions are written in a language known as code, and they tell the CPU what tasks to perform.
As the CPU works its magic, it relies on a trusty companion known as the memory or RAM, which acts as its spellbook. The memory stores all the information the CPU needs to perform its tasks, such as the code for the programs you are running and the data you are working with.“

That could be it. I was asking it about fairly new things like go_router and Riverpod, which haven’t been around long.

It would work better with something more stable, so pure language use without frameworks or frameworks that are older and therefore don’t have many breaking changes in new versions. It can certainly be helpful though, it is super interesting technology. But in the end you still have to do the actual work yourself. Maybe Github’s Copilot works even better, haven’t tried that yet :)

Tried out ChatGPT for the first time, asked it some Flutter questions. I’m glad to see that developers are not going away soon, lots of the code it generated was wrong. Frameworks are changing too quickly for It to keep up, used a bunch of deprecated methods. The non-code answers were awesome though, quite fun.

Gossip has a back button now? Awesome! Sounds like a small thing, but it’s so much more useable now.

As long as it is optional I like it for the people who can’t live without it, to each their own. Downvoting on Reddit and mass flagging campaigns on social networks have shown (imho) that flagging sadly does not work because what ends up getting flagged is different opinions first, actually bad content last.

Great job!
One little bug I noticed though… On Mac the new sidebar (Profile, Settings, Sign Out) is fixed size, when I make the window smaller, the sidebar content goes beyond the left window edge. Here’s a screenshot:

Fixed it. Now using the lower level AdaptiveLayout, really seems to be a Google bug in AdaptiveScaffold. At least that means it’s not my fault :D

Playing around with Flutter’s new AdaptiveScaffold to get a thread view going for my Nostr app. It’s supposed to make it easier to make an app that adapts to the device it’s on (phone, tablet, desktop) but I can’t for the life of me figure out how to change the button and text colors on the left in desktop mode (works in tablet and phone mode). Probably a Google bug 😔 Ah well, at least a little bit of progress today.

Haiku Beta 4 just came out, so you could get back in that BeOS vibe :)They’ve ported GTK now in addition to Qt so lots of Linux apps run on there now. I’ve been playing around with it on the Steam Deck, just for nostalgia. I used it as my main OS for a while years ago, developed some small apps for it. But I never liked C++ programming, so I moved on eventually. Still go back to it every now and then though, it just makes me smile, there is something about it.

Haven’t seen anything really bad there yet. I do check it every now and then so find new people to follow or get a feel for what’s going on right now on Nostr. It’s starting to get really hard to follow though, depending on the time of day there are just so many new posts all the time :)

Changed working title to 🥚ggNostr, since nostril was already taken. Nobody steal that name! I might not come up with something as silly as this again!

Started stacking free sats on January 1st, 2023. Got my first 500 here on Nostr from #[0] (thanks!), now I’m up to 1332 sats after checking out some lightning projects. If this continues… I’ll be able to get a whole Pizza for free on January 1st, 2024! I can already taste those yummy carbs 🍕

Enjoy it while it lasts. At some point, people will start complaining that „strangers“ invaded their timeline and then global is dead. This short phase of a new social network is always the best :)

Added connecting to multiple relays and profile fetching. Next up is actually posting to Nostr, replies, likes and so on. This is after two hours of work using Flutter, design is completely temporary, just playing around right now:
