Don't believe everything a little bird (X) tells you. I'm a silly fucker. Music, nonsense, random stories (always a story) and whatever comes to mind. Not a racist, a homophobe, a transphobe or a bigot. Basically not a cunt (I do swear so if that is not for you, I'm definitely not for you). Last Notes npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B I was chatting earlier about moving to the Fedi, how what I post has developed over time and how revolutionary it has been for me. This got me thinking, something important about getting to grips with it has been seeing how others post and interact. I think I kind of underestimated how much posts by certain people in particular shaped what I felt I wanted to, and could, post. Not mimicry, just examples of the freedom available . npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B @nprofile…dyu0 Of course he will love it. The picture you shared was incredible. I really enjoyed your posts about the journey to getting this done, and seeing a glimpse of the final product was incredible. I appreciate you sharing what the final outcome was like, because I got invested in the cloak and dagger, sneaking around, to create a nice surprise, and how it felt for you. I never expected to see any of the pictures, but was just happy to share the journey with you. Thank you, and you honestly look amazing. Such a good decision. Brave (that sounds patronising but it isn't meant to be) to commit to something like this, but gawdam you were right! Me, personally; I'm not sure the best photographer in the world could polish this up to a standard anyone would call Hawt! CGI, AI, I reckon I could break them both trying to make me palatable 😂 npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B @nprofile…zvpa Brut is about £7.50 for 100ml. I smell like Henry Cooper every day. (Henry died in 2011 so this can either mean I smell of cheap aftershave or a decomposing boxing champion, or both) npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B @nprofile…l7em FFS. 5 minutes after posting and you've blown my LSD rings cover already! npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B Now I just want to say, I really appreciate these folks pressing a limited edition of an album previously unavailable on vinyl. I absolutely respect this dedication to bringing music to people. I'm only half serious when I say this because Brexit and small operations doing their best, but fucking hell, nearly 2 months to receive an item already in stock. It's coming to the UK from Italy, not Mars. Blimey. 52 days from order. I could walk to Genoa and back, twice, and have a couple 4 day city breaks on the way in that time and save myself the postage cost. https://media.beige.party/media_attachments/files/116/297/742/286/600/002/original/ed92e09d69b5f384.png https://media.beige.party/media_attachments/files/116/297/830/988/071/406/original/d53bfed9ba9202d2.jpeg npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B As suspected, the old red telephone box converted into a community library did not yield any literary fiction or classics. Unless you consider Jilly Cooper, Jeffrey Archer or Catherine Cookson among the greats. A lot in here I don't know, if so if you spot a good one let me know. I've read The Liar by Stephen Fry, it's ok, probably the best of a bad bunch as far as I can see. https://media.beige.party/media_attachments/files/116/273/503/778/246/295/original/b2c5f1c3c5ddbaa5.jpg https://media.beige.party/media_attachments/files/116/273/515/911/330/172/original/ae1edd8a64d18782.jpg npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B The Fedi/Mastodon is revelatory, I love it, but the emotional weight is greater and very different. Honesty is powerful. I'm not even going to talk about Instagram or Facebook, but Twitter was/is a combative place, even if you are passive. Here it's completely different, many people are very open, myself included to a degree, which is refreshing and a welcome humanising of social media, but with that comes with it's own challenges. I care about people. People share their physical, emotional and psychological struggles here. I empathise, I try to understand and support folks as best I can with my level of understanding. It's a lot though. I'm out of my depth frequently, I want to help but don't have a clue how to, and don't want to say something stupid or insensitive, no matter how well intentioned. But at the same time, I don't want to stay silent, because I want you to know I care. Often a "like/⭐" means I hear you but have no useful words. It feels lame, but it's probably better than what my awkward brain will come up with as a reply. An exchange in the last couple of days touched me. I mentioned it to Mrs B and as I read one message out my chin went, my voice broke and my eyes filled. It's different here, but it's a new (but much better) set of challenges. Bless you all lovely Fedifolk ❤️ :bb: npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B None of my 3D, long term friends are on here. Everyone here is new to me since November 2022, apart from a handful of pocket friends from Twitter that made it across and had the guts to stick with it. Love you all. ❤️ I talk about the Fedi enthusiastically with my 3D folks but also, I don't encourage them to join, or at least not to connect with me here, (one is actually here but in the infosec sphere) it's my thing, I'm free, they can hear my nonsense anytime already. What tickles me is one friend refers to themselves and my other friends now as "legacy mates" 😱. Whilst not true, it is quite funny. npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B It's that time of the month soon (first Wednesday) when my community radio show airs. 3 hours of eclectic music from 7:30pm GMT tomorrow. Available on demand after. This month's show has a cracking hour long mix of spacey Techno from Coefficient, head honcho at the record label Unspace. https://openradio.mixlr.com/events/4826439 npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B Damn. Just found out Sly Dunbar, legendary drummer and record producer, one half of Sly and Robbie, has died. Sly worked on so many iconic tracks with the biggest stars of Reggae and the wider music world. Here's a familiar track that he and Robbie wrote, and played on, that an absolute queen wrote new lyrics for and made her own. RIP Sly 👊 Grace Jones - Pull up to the Bumper https://media.beige.party/media_attachments/files/115/962/869/412/961/833/original/cfa7b85b3ce23fb8.mp3 npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B The big guy sends his regards :mastodon: https://media.beige.party/media_attachments/files/115/955/703/199/773/202/original/90b336efd5b72be7.jpg npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B @nprofile…nekg ❤️ I've bought all their stuff and I'm not even joking when I say I listen to them nearly every day. I may have a problem 😂 npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B I'm not saying you should listen to Širom every day (even though I do, pretty much). If anything, my endorsement is possibly unhelpful (sorry Širom) being the freewheeling mess I am. But I do know music, and I know what's good for my soul. Try it. npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B I posted about being stressed out and turned to the Fediverse for some light relief. https://media.beige.party/media_attachments/files/115/943/758/969/723/037/original/3622a155c68dbaf8.mp4 npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B Most of our heroes seem to be wronguns eventually. So, who do you reckon is bulletproof? I'll start Bob Mortimer (UK comedian) Robert Smith (The Cure front man) npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B I'm having a terrible and incredibly stressful week, on numerous fronts, but fuck that and them for a while. Hiya, pocket friends! Let's dance. https://media.beige.party/media_attachments/files/115/941/218/496/213/148/original/ff4a28927b24fd34.jpg npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B @nprofile…8mxe I have visited Venice and I lived in Birmingham for 3 months so have first hand experience of both for comparison. Venice is undoubtedly more picturesque but as stated above, Birmingham does have a lot more canals so I'm calling that as Venice 1-1 Birmingham I didn't see any shopping trolleys in the canals of Venice 2-1, but Birmingham has a Curry mile. No pasta mile in Venice 2-2. If Birmingham still had Mr Egg (the late night cafe selling egg based meals) then it would win but sadly that's gone, so I'm calling it a 2-2 draw between Venice and Birmingham (TripAdvisor ratings may disagree). I'm hoping @nprofile…99nc doesn't see this thread because I may be in trouble next time she's back in the UK. npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B Spammers really are getting pretty sophisticated these days. This week alone I've had really targeted emails enticing me with; An invite to be a speaker to the UN at a conference in Thailand An invite to the World Plumbing Conference in Birmingham. This year the theme is "The Four Core Pillars shaping the future of plumbing" It's like they know me. (I have literally no connection to the plumbing industry but dream of going to Birmingham (UK). It has more canals than Venice you know!) npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B The Young Team have a theory that Daphne is playing us for sympathy treats now. She is not always wonky, but definitely is mega-wonked when there's food around. Exhibit A (note the front paw getting lifted off the floor to execute the begging stance) https://media.beige.party/media_attachments/files/115/923/193/124/480/789/original/c0d08da857453e5c.jpg npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B I don't want to be an online influencer princess about it, but I'm shocked more people haven't liked the photo of a dog shit I took earlier, taking time out of my busy day and shared, FOR YOU, online. I'm not upset, just disappointed. If the dog had shat on some moss or lichen, or a window, you'd be all over it. Fickle bastards. Don't like it now. Too late. Doesn't count. Don't insult me. npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B @nprofile…s5ph Fuuuuuuck. So sorry to hear that mate. npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B I've had a proper, proper shit day at work. Some beancounting fuckwit in the US has decided sacking one of my team to "reduce headcount" would make a fucking spreadsheet look a tiny bit better for the end of year accounts. They've even helpfully suggested who it should be, despite having fuck all knowledge about what they do or who they are. Just a fucking number. Fuck you motherfucker. I'm a wiley old cunt. I've been an undercover socialist in a corporate environment for 25 years and I will fucking wriggle the fuck out of this shit, and when I do, you're going on the fucking spreadsheet you corporate ghoul cunt. (Also, you thick fuck, she literally passed a professional qualification last week that I got the company to pay about 15 grand for, you tit). I've been in a big company for years and (touch wood) survived all sorts of shit in a backstabbing corporate environment. My rules: 1) Be nice to everyone. Always if at all possible 2) Be helpful, even if it's not your responsibility to do so 3) Make friends in high places without being someone's bitch. The top brass should know who you are and give you a friendly nod or some chit chat around the office. If they're asking you to grass up your colleagues you got too close and you're getting burned one day 4) If you make enemies pretend you don't know they consider you an enemy (this is cast iron advice, they think you're stupid and always get sloppy trying to stitch you up. Lay your traps, carefully, with an innocent face and they'll literally hit the self destruct button) 5) Take care of your people. They are people. They have lives, families, worries. If Sandra is having a hard time, give her the day off and don't take it out of her holiday allowance. Nobody is keeping count so just turn a blind eye with a wink 6) Reward people's families if you can (this is solid gold management advice. Treat the family. Spot bonuses or whatever are good but if possible, in addition, purposefully pay for a meal with their significant other. Buy tickets for the Zoo or a theme park. Give their family something as a mark of appreciation, quality time together, recognition that often they bear some of the brunt of your employees job. I learnt this on the receiving end 20 years ago and because it was genuine it has stuck with me ever since. Recognition and appreciation of the wider impact work has on people's lives beyond the workplace is so important, because people appreciate being seen as people, not fucking numbers on a spreadsheet) npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B A huge mention of love and appreciation for the Spanish neurologist vet, Inés, who almost certainly saved Daphne's life. A softly spoken angel who called us morning and night, giving us as much time and attention as we needed. As we left, Inés leant in, cupped Daphne's face in her hands, told her she was a beautiful brave girl, and gently kissed her on the snout 🥹. npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B Daphne update She's home 🥹 She can't stand or walk unaided yet. The part of her brain that controls her balance and coordination is where the blood clot hit, and so she is struggling to control her right side and her head keeps naturally turning left. The neurologist said she could come home if we can manage 24 hour care. She was very distressed and we all decided she will recover better at home where she's more relaxed. A small miracle she's in as good shape as she is. She can stand and walk if we walk on her right so she can lean on us as she tries to relearn how to balance. We've already seen a big improvement since she's been home and she actually managed 4 steps upright, unaided, in the garden. Not going to lie, I'm crying after writing that last sentence. So relieved. She's a wonky Whippet, but she's alive and we can rebuild her (cue training montage to Eye of the Tiger). Thanks again for all your thoughts and well wishes ❤️ https://media.beige.party/media_attachments/files/115/809/151/986/361/302/original/620f5b6168e9b6df.jpg npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B Daphne update. Our prayers have been answered. She survived the general anaesthetic, which was our first major concern as it was a risk. The MRI showed she had a massive stroke today, the seizure behaviour was her having the stroke and then going into a massive panic attack because she lost her sight and control of her legs. When I left her she was writhing around in a kennel and I put my face to hers so she knew I was there, she was panicking but licked my face as she knew it was her dad. I thought it was going to be our last interaction. The specialist called and reassured us that she should make an almost full recovery. Mrs B has been in bits all day, I've been doing the stoic bit. When the lovely specialist said "she'll be chasing bunnies again" I fucking folded. Glad she was on the phone and couldn't see me ugly crying. Thank you all so much for your support. I appreciate the messages but as I said, just knowing people are thinking of us was enough. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B Could really do with some good vibes my friends. Daphne was very suddenly taken very ill today, completely unexpectedly. She appeared to be having multiple, prolonged seizures, but now we got her to a neurologist and they think she may have a brain issue. They're trying to get her stable enough to give her the best chance of surviving a general anesthetic, in order for them to do an MRI scan. She was in a pitiful state when we left her and we're distraught frankly. No need to reply, just spare us all a thought if you will please :bb: https://media.beige.party/media_attachments/files/115/798/576/791/245/370/original/ad6ab01814da4c1f.jpg npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B "Someone spilt gravy on the dog" is a phrase I just heard uttered. It was both hilarious and accurate. Daphne (the dog in question) did not complain. She was actually quite pleased. npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B Just in case anyone was thinking of using this phrase, please be aware the Youngest does appear to have established "you horrible old man" as a catchphrase, and you may be subject to legal retribution. npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B One of my team decided to try and use Copilot (Microsoft AI) to draft a holiday season rota and output it into Excel. The output was chaotic nonsense, but the funniest thing was in the first column, for days of the week, it decided there are days called Seturday, Saturd, Senday and, confusingly, Ocsday. npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B "Dead to the world" Do people outside the UK use this term for being fast asleep? Dead To The World. That's a fucking epic state. Give me that. Bring. It. On. npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B I've been watching Slow Horses (TV series) and while I'm enjoying it, it has a distracting element that's quite specific to me. Many of the scenes and shots are filmed around a fairly small area of London where I worked, where my kids went to school and where I would socialise for about 15 years. Often the background is a bit out of focus but my brain recognises it and wants to identify where it is. I can't switch it off in my head and it's driving me a bit loopy 😂. npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B @eclectech @nprofile…9050 Daphne on a steam train, wishing it was the Polar Express. #XmasHatting https://media.beige.party/media_attachments/files/115/700/875/184/534/293/original/7ccecb23cdd85182.jpg npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B @nprofile…6ljh I think what I was trying to convey is a weird change of dynamic for me. LIke you, my words travel much more now. On Twitter I was a tiny nobody who didn't really say anything. On here I found a voice and people to talk with, so I talk openly. It's not Pokémon, I'm not trying to collect people or numbers/stats, it's not a game or a competition, I'm just having a chat. But occasionally I stop and realise I'm not just talking to a small group of friends, what I'm saying will hit over a thousand people (if they read or not is unknown) and if certain friends boost it, my silly thoughts will reach tens of thousands of people. If they read it or not I can't know, but the words I type can really travel, and once they leave me, I have no control over them or how they are received. npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B I give zero fucks about numbers here. I didn't care there, and wasn't trying. Here, now, it's just me talking. And that's the way I want it, because it was never like this before. I want to make you happy, not sad, if you're reading this or anything I write. I'm not a robot, but really fucking sound like one right now for some reason. npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B The Southbank Centre VERY TL:DR Mat loves the Southbank Centre in London. The Southbank Centre is a complex of arts spaces housed on the south bank of the river Thames in London. Built in forward thinking Britain of the late 40s and early 50s. It is a prime example of Brutalist architecture in post war Britain, with futuristic design throughout, now preserved. It consists of 3 concert halls, an art gallery, the National Theatre and the British Film Institute. During the 1980s Brutalist architecture was seen as ugly; concrete might have well been dog shit as a building material, and sites such as the Southbank Centre and Barbican became apparent no go areas, with their grey, labyrinthine designs. Philistineism crept in, and these places declined. Here now is a story, of upstairs and downstairs. In what would later become known as the "undercroft" at street level of the centre, was an open space, a space with banked walls and flat, undercover surfaces that became a dry haven for both the homeless and skateboarders. It was literally a "cardboard city", there were people living in crudely constructed boxes. A shanty town beneath a cultural institution. At the same time skateboarding came alive. Southbank was a Mecca for kids, partly because it was dry, you can't really skate in the wet, but also it was where all the proper skaters were. In music terms it was the CBGB or Hacienda of the scene. Big US skaters started turning up on tours of Europe. My first experience of Southbank was on a trip there to skate and getting mugged (robbed). Went up there, 13, and got picked off before my train seat was cold. They were smart fuckers. Hid behind pillars and ambushed us. The lad at the front had someone step out from behind a pillar and got punched in the back of the head, the rest of the muggers appeared behind us. We all lost our skateboards (no phones or money back then). I had a shit board anyway. My parents felt bad for me so I got a spanking new setup out of sympathy (result). I spent most weekends in my teenage years skating at Southbank, I came in contact and made friends middle class people for the first time there. The undercroft community was a strange but harmonious mix of skateboarding kids and homeless men. We got to know a few characters and would chat occasionally, giving them any spare change we had (one year we discovered a loophole in McDonald's Monopoly™ based scratch card promotion. Because it was technically gambling you could go in and just ask for a card without making a purchase. The skaters and homeless ate McD's for free that summer) As time passed and public opinion of our Brutalist spaces changed the Southbank Centre was revived and revitalised. The homeless people were moved on (how or to where I don't know) and much of, but not all, the area used by skaters was boarded up and inaccessible. Gentrification transformed the area and chain restaurants in glass boxes popped up. I welcomed the revival of a beautiful arts complex, and have seen many great exhibitions and films there, but in my heart I am still a dweller of the undercroft. A few years ago it was announced that the undercroft was to be redeveloped into retail units. By way of compensation a small skatepark would be built elsewhere in the borough (away from the cultured visitors and tourists). A campaign was started by the skating community, Long Live Southbank, who raised funds to lobby the Arts Council. On Twitter I was dismayed to see Billy Bragg, the musician and socialist activist who I am a long time admirer of, promoting the demolition of the undercroft. It turned out he was a trustee of the centre. I took a potshot at him and he responded. We had a very civilised argument (a rarity on Twitter) but eventually agreed to disagree. His point was the ongoing funding of the Arts there, my point was that in the belly of the centre a genuine subculture formed organically and that should be celebrated and preserved. Actual culture grew there, it was a special space. The skateboarders won the argument and the centre reopened sections previously boarded up. No hard feelings Billy and respect to the Arts Council for seeing it's value to British culture. This was very long, congratulations if you made it to the end. I had to update the calendar for Mrs B for 2026 tonight because I've booked a fair few things for Rave Oddessy 2026 ™ already. I realise that a lot of folks can't or don't get out as much as I do, for a lot of reasons. Many don't want to either. Which is fair enough and understandable. I am not unaware of my privilege to do so, and hope that posting about such things is seen as an invitation to come along in some way, rather than a display of, "look what I'm doing! Aren't I great! Isn't my life amazing!". This isn't Instagram. I'm not Kim Kardashian (my autocorrect filled that in way too quickly). My life is boring and repetitive. So boring I turn every little detail into a story, reflecting or finding tenuous connections between things. It's how I'm wired. It's not showing off, it's sharing the good bits I try and carve out for my sanity. There's loads of terrible shit but I try and keep it light (nothing wrong with sharing your bad shit, I'm here for you). I guess what I'm trying to say is I'm pretty good at painting a picture, deliberately so, of something genuine, but it's not the whole picture. I see fun and joy in my world and want to share that. The rest, I keep to myself, but it's still there. In short, this isn't Instagram. My life isn't perfect by any measure. I only share to share happiness and hope, and I hope my stories/antics portrayed are amusing and not exclusive. TL:DR Small acts can have huge impacts if you're kind to people. Sometimes you don't know how much difference you make, but being nice is a superpower. ====================================== Support the younglings! I have a super creative, super intelligent, deeply caring and thoughtful autistic person in my life; one of my children. I introduced them to a ton of different music just by being around it. I also introduced them to a way to make music, via a computer, even though I barely knew how myself, when they were 8. They ran with it and now it's their life (I have a separate origin story but thats for another time). The point of this post is to highlight how community and small acts of support can build confidence in people, allowing them to be themselves. I learnt of a music project in 2017, The Dark Outside, where musicians and audio artists would submit music/sounds never heard before, to be transmitted over FM radio in a 24 hour broadcast in a remote forest in Scotland. To listen in, people would have to go to the site with a radio. People did. Well known artists rubbed shoulders with complete novices, beamed out into dark Scottish forest to weirdos who made the effort to go and listen. We submitted a tune, when the Eldest was 13, which was accepted and broadcast. A few months later the organiser, Stuart, asked if his record label could use the track on a compilation tape. Alongside amazing musicians, including some members of Mogwai, who we loved. Amazing. We said yes, of course. I'm going to take a pause for context now. The Eldest was very much a 13 year old outsider in an all boys secondary school. Undiagnosed autistic in a harsh environment. Bullied, no easy way of putting it, heartbreaking as a parent. Back to nicer things. It became apparent that Cosi Fanny Tutti (of Throbbing Gristle and a further illustrious career) had a copy of the tape! On their SoundCloud account proper music heads had followed (in particular Clair from Hotgem music who is a star ❤️). This made a bullied kid feel seen. We had been going to an annual electronic music festival in London, BPM, which had a lot of very reputable artists playing in historic churches in the city. What was nice was the vibe. The artists hung around and listened to each other, not just in and out. Plaid, Luke Vibert, B12, Daedalus, Mira Calix, Lorraine James and many more. At 14, a kid who was a bullied outsider at school just walked up to Daedalus and dived into a conversation about their set and musical theories generally. The Eldest saw themselves as a contemporary and Daedalus treated them the same way. Not patronising, genuine. He was genuinely delighted at the feedback he got too. A lovely man. Related. I have been a lifelong fan of Black Dog/Plaid. Massively. The Eldest too, through my love of them. They played RPM twice. The first time I took the Eldest to say hello, we had a chat, nice. The next year, Stuart (from the Dark Outside as mentioned above) had sent them the Eldest's music and they got to talk about it in person 🤯. Plaid (specifically Andy) sent us the stems of their, then, unreleased single to remix and play with. Amazing and generous. Imagine, chatting with your musical heroes at 14 about your work, and them sending you their unreleased raw material to play around with! One last thing. The Eldest submitted a track called Dawn for The Dark Outside, broadcast in 2019. They were 15 at the time. In a change of location it was transmitted from Elizabeth the Firsts hunting lodge in Epping forest, near where we live. We were able to go along and tune in, alongside others. The event was heavily supported by The Quietus, an online culture site (if you don't know about it look it up, it's the best), so much so that Luke Turner, founder and chief editor, was manning the operation overnight. I was a long time supporter and fan of The Quietus, I actually received a copy of his autobiography for Christmas which I hadn't yet read. As the sun was setting over the forest Luke wandered over and struck up a conversation with us. We explained the Eldest's tune was being broadcast at some point, then it came on, a Vangellis sounding track as the sun dipped behind the forest. When it finished there were cheers, close by and in the distance from listener's in the forest. Luke congratulated the Eldest and said it was great. Magic moment. True story. Went back to being nobody loser on Monday morning at school. They had a real moment of respect and awe with a grown up, an intellectual person of note on Wednesday, but on Monday it was pure bully shit again from idiots. If you made it this far down bless you. All true. The point is. Lift up the younglings. Give them your time, wisdom and understanding. Small things are huge sometimes. Not just them. Encourage all people always. It's never too late if you don't shut the gate! npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B FREE GIG TICKET TOMORROW NIGHT IN LONDON I have a spare ticket to see the wonderful Sirom tomorrow night in Shoreditch. "In my day" blah blah. Earlier I wrote, I'm 52 but in my head i'm 25. I was an 80s/90s young person. This isn't fucking Facebook so I'll spare you the curly phone cord nostalgia bollocks. Yes we had to arrange to meet and stick to the plan or get left behind. The planning mindset is different to now. It doesn't make you superior Gary. What has struck me, not exactly a eureka moment but still, is the channels we've become accustomed to. I'm talking shit with you lot here, I'm trying to guide a close friend through a difficult personal situation and having a frank but casual conversation with a close friend about global geopolitics with someone in the actual thick of it on another 2 platforms. Then there's work too. This was impossible, unthinkable, 30 years ago. If I lost you at Glastonbury in 95, fate is our service provider. No longer an issue. Now, now you need an excuse. I didn't see your WhatsApp or Reddit or Twitter or Insta or Facebook or whatever. In the old days blocking was not answering the door or blanking you in the pub. Simpler times. I guess the point is, we've become available, like it or not, through technology. You can still be unavailable, but it's seen more, and the expectation is different now. npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B @nprofile…njqj Random comment, but your avi photo has always confused my brain. It's usually seen really small, and looks like a cartoonish face with long jowels/cheeks, staring face on to the viewer, in my head. I only recently looked at it bigger/more closely and understand it now, but weirdly it still renders in my brain as that cartoonish face, even though I know what it is. Very weird. Yeah, true story. I may need professional help. npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B I've discovered I'm blocked by a few people in the last few weeks. Quite shocking as I don't think my stuff is that controversial. People I don't recall ever having talked to, let alone been confrontational with (I've had my moments but I'm generally pretty chilled). About 50% are on my server, beige. I only know this because they are in chains with mutuals who I really like and when I go back in the conversation it's blocked out. I try not to think too much about this. Everyone is not for everyone. Also, I might be (am) annoying, I get that. I guess, in my way of using Mastodon I mute the boring and block the bad folks, so assume other people do the same. Being blocked feels like I've done something bad or upset someone so much they never want to hear from me again. That's fair enough, their prerogative, and I don't want to be where I'm unwelcome. No hard feelings. But a part of me wants to know why, so I can either moderate or refine what I say, or accept it may annoy some people. Nobody is obliged to listen to me, I don't expect that, and if you objectively reject listening to me that's absolutely correct. I'm talking to people who won't see any of this, but if I offended or offend you, I apologise :bb: I can't promise I'll change though. npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B @nprofile…5lrj Wildly underappreciated in my opinion. Not being critical but I just don't notice, unless someone who chats or engages regularly disappears. I really don't pay any attention to numbers because frankly I have no idea why anyone would listen to this, frankly scattergun, mix of earnest, sometimes wholesome musings entwined with unhinged, borderline obscene flights of fancy, interspersed with slightly pretentious takes on music and culture, and just, whatever. I'm more surprised people stick around, but at the same time, I follow others for exactly that. I love the random mess that folks want to share of themselves, however real or contrived it is. Even lies can be true, if they come from the right place. I'm sure 75% of my "followers" (hate that term) have either left or never see my nonsense, but occasionally I do pause and think, do you want to say this to 1,300+ people, who in turn could spread these words exponentially, about your silly thoughts or dearest memories? Here I've found somewhere I'm comfortable saying pretty much whatever I want because, on the whole, friends and strangers alike, are good people who appreciate the same liberty I do. Lastly, to people "following" me. Apologies if I haven't followed back yet. Typically I will, particularly if we talk, but sometimes it takes me a while to notice otherwise. If you post/boost a lot about stuff I'm not really interested in then it's pointless me following back, but if you talk to me I'll almost always chat. Catchphrases or sayings you have with friends or family that are totally unique to you. Nobody else knows them but it's shorthand for something that those in the know understand, and are still in use. One example of mine is "everything you like". Basically it means accept what you're given, or, it will be fine, go with it. The origin is a Turkish takeaway/takeout place in London when we were young. You'd ask the owner, What's in this? and the answer would be a list of random and not exactly accurate ingredients, followed by the phrase "everything you like". Both a reassurance and a sales pitch. Everything I like? How can I refuse! I'll take two. npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B @nprofile…r5de @nprofile…35w2 I can't understand why anyone would be a twat around learners. There's a big sign on the car mate. Were you born able to drive a manual motor vehicle? People who give learners anything other than patience and respect on the road are the same as people who treat waiting staff in restaurants badly. Not driving or eating with you again. Twat. npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B I forgot to mention quicksand. When I was young that was a big fear too. In the south of England, nuclear armageddon was probably a lot more likely, but still. Quicksand was a worry to 7 year old Mat. And tarantula spiders. Also not very common here, but definitely keeping an eye out for those fuckers. npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B TL/DR Be kind to young people and don't be an old twat. Life is short. As you grow older this becomes a lot more apparent. Patience also gets a lot shorter as you grow older. The difference, as a person, is who your patience grows shorter for. Learner drivers? Unsure shop/restaurant staff? Young people in general? Fuck off with this impatience. "I've done my time. Back in my day..." twats, fuck off. Most of the people before you who had it bad are either dead from being old, from being in wars (that you didn't fight in) or dead from being poor. Let young people breathe. Help them. Let them enjoy life (in the shitty situation they've been dealt, by "us" collectively). When I was a kid the big fear was nuclear Armageddon (in hindsight not as real a threat as it seemed). Now, my young adults have to think about nuclear Armageddon, Climate catastrophe, the rise of fascism and Israel nearly winning Eurovision. Be impatient with the people who can make all of our lives better but don't. Very fucking impatient. npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B @nprofile…ufeq Also, this put me in mind of this post/incident... https://beige.party/@TwoClownsEating/113351350817396856 npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B @nprofile…ufeq I just hope she wasn't driving at the time, or at a funeral, otherwise you probably made someone's day. npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B I'm going to a festival with the Young Team this week. I personally know many Americans (not just social media friends) and completely understand that there are many, many people horrified by the current situation. We (outsiders) are looking on in horror and sympathy. This said the current climate is affecting us. My wife's business is at risk because of the on/off tariff nonsense. We have a war raging in Europe and it's not clear from one day to the next, whose side the US government is on. In Israel it's clear who they support. People outside the US feel the pain in our lives too. It's lazy to assume all Americans support what is happening, and I certainly don't, not in any way. I also do not gloat towards the American people when I see the horror they have unleashed upon themselves by some voting (or not voting at all) for someone clearly unfit for office who will abuse his power, to the maximum, given a second chance to do so. There is bitterness and incredulity outside the US as to how so many people could support, and continue to support, this monster. I understand it's not everyone and I don't personally post criticism of the people as a whole, but a simplified outside view is, this is what America voted for, again. It's hurting you and us, but we didn't get a say in the matter. I agree it's not helpful to throw stones at you, particularly on here as it's not exactly MAGA country. I'm with you 100% and completely agree beating up people we agree with over this is shitty and unhelpful. I guess I'm just trying to explain why the animosity exists, but agree the vitriol is aimed at the wrong people. npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B The tale of Not Chutney. About this time 9 years ago we went to a 3 day music festival near where we live. As it was close by we didn't camp and were able to bring Daphne (the Whippet dog) during the day. The weirdest thing happened, people would come over to pet her and say "hello Chutney". We were like, pardon? "Oh we met Chutney the other day". This happened about 7 or 8 times, one person took some convincing that this was not in fact Chutney (mate we haven't kidnapped someone else's dog!). Day 3 and we finally bumped into Chutney, and Daphne got to meet her doggy doppelganger (doggoganger). It was quite uncanny, Chutney was a bit bigger than her but the odd thing was they both had brown leather collars and hemp rope leads* (Chutney's was thicker rope). Now it made sense. * Something that is also quite odd is that we have never seen any dog since with this style of lead. (Excuse the poor quality photo but getting two excited Whippets to pose for a photo is impossible. This lad from Edinburgh is really not well known and this album didn't get anywhere near the attention it deserves. Insula by Proc Fiskal, from 2018 on Hyperdub records, is described as instrumental Grime but I think that sells it short. A jittery, intricate album of UK bass adjacent sounds, with melodies and textures more thoughtful than most of its contemporaries. The current US political and societal ambition seems to be a return to an imagined, puritanical view of itself in the late 1930s, which took advantage of a world in turmoil for massive profit. Sitting out World War 2 as long as possible, despite the plight of others, Made America "Great"*. The faux Christian ethos is laughed at around the globe. America is literally the least Christian country in the whole world. Every Muslim country is more "Christian" in its values than the USA. Fact. Christian in the US means do as we say, not as we do, and the books say what we say they do. *Rich npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B @nprofile…u78r Theres one of these about 20 ft from my front door (long since decommissioned as a public phone). Firstly, unless you're an official account of theirs that's probably taken for granted. Secondly, if you say something the company doesn't like they'll distance themselves from you publicly anyway regardless of disclaimers. Thirdly, and this is the one that gets me the most; you're entitled to be yourself. Your employer doesn't own you. The assumption that what you say or think is a reflection of a business that pays you to do specific things for some of your day isn't real. They don't represent your beliefs and you don't represent theirs. They can and will cut you off as it suits them. Be the same. Remember that. Companies are not people. Loyalty needs to be earned and maintained. I've been very loyal to some companies but it's the people, not the name or logo, that keep me wanting to be part of something. If you feel you can't be you, because of fear of your employer, maybe it's them not you. npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B This seems like a good moment to mention a resource for parents of children in the UK with SEN (special educational needs) or disability. Cannot speak highly enough of them. https://www.ipsea.org.uk/ npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B Some nice news. The Eldest just got their final mark from university and they got a first class degree. This actually hit me and Mrs B more than I was expecting. Naturally we're proud and delighted for them, but having to help a (largely undiagnosed) Autistic person through the British state education system has been a battle to say the very least. For them to be able to get the highest possible grade at postgraduate level after everything they have been through over the last 16 years is incredible. The sensation we as parents have right now is almost like finally letting a trauma go. So much heartache now behind us. What at times, during darker days, seemed impossible, today is a reality. npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B @nprofile…mp9f @nprofile…rs68 My children were born in a hospital in Hackney (London UK), and the claim to fame was it was the best place to go if you were giving birth or had been shot. Reassuring. npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B Do you ever feel like people only see some of who you are? The bits most interesting to them. Then they just ignore the rest of who you are. Sometimes I feel like the B side of Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells album. npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B And now I wait for a fan of The Doctor Whos to tell me that Daleks can navigate stairs, actually. npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B @nprofile…rs68 This reminded me of an incident when I was at university. The garage (apart from the kebab van) was the only place to get food after closing time within a 5 mile radius. We rocked up, a little drunk, and asked for a pasty, through the little sliding hatch by the window as the door was locked. It was dead, nobody else about, geezer was sat doing nothing. When we asked for it to be heated up he said he couldn't serve us because we weren't buying petrol and went back to his newspaper. Lazy bastard. All the other staff did this for us. So, and I'm both proud and not proud of this, I picked up a bag of BBQ charcoal (because there's always charcoal piled outside petrol stations) and proceeded to fill the serving hatch, to the brim, with charcoal. Thinking about it, if just stop oil did this they'd be looking at 5 years behind bars these days (Ben Elton voice "a little bit of politics"). npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B North American friends. You, rightly, get confused by stupid English place names. Leicester being a key example. Lie sest er on the page but it's Lester when pronounced. We've got loads of these, apologies, it's not you it's us. However, Arkansas. What the fuck is that about? I read about that place so many times until I finally clicked how it's pronounced. Kansas, Texas. Yep, we know that. Kan sas. Put AR in front of it and it becomes Ar Ken Saw. What?! Where is the W coming from? Where is the Ken? The wildest thing about the Arkansas confusion for me was when I met a couple from Arkansas in a smoking area outside a hotel in Chicago. I raised this point and neither of them had ever considered that Kansas and Arkansas were pronounced completely differently. npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B @nprofile…0nz2 I've heard it pronounced both ways, personally I'd agree on anus Scientifically, I think it's a mix of how people pronounce it and what they want to call Piers Morgan. I'm not going to judge, only encourage people, for purely scientific reasons. npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B I don't miss twitter much but in the old days it could be quite fun. I followed a guy called Roger Quimbly and every 6 months he'd post this "Heinous. Does that rhyme with Penis or Anus? Send your one word answers to @PiersMorgan " And Piers Morgan would have a day of tons of people just tweeting Penis or Anus at him. The first couple of times he had no idea why. Brilliant. npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B I'm not really into cars, but I do have a slight 1970s, early eighties, fetish for the kind of cars the cool lads on the (housing) estate would drive when I was a nipper (black and orange paint preferably). Ford Escort was king. Ford Capri if you were fucking council estate James Bond. So, my mate sent me some pictures of a Ford Escort (see below). Pretty sweet to my 7 year old eyes. Then I realised, this is a brand new car. Reproduced. All analogue, 1970s design. £179,000 after tax. Wild. 7 year old Mat really needs to come up with some winning lottery numbers to fulfill his 7 year old dreams. If you're curious here's the link to the manufacturer. How this is even a viable business I don't know. https://mst-cars.com/ https://media.beige.party/media_attachments/files/114/723/580/152/779/248/original/cf65861979a85511.jpg npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B #totp Not wanting to lower the tone, but in the humid UK tonight the main things sticking together are my nutsack and my thighs. It's kind of funny, but unsurprising, that once you get to talk to people a while their online and in person personalities start to align. No catfish's detected. Paul going out to get food, returning 20 minutes later having not even left the pub after meeting a dog and sitting on the floor with it instead was a highlight 😂 Paul eventually managed to get some food at a second attempt. At London Zoo they have a tank with Blind Cave Fish. I was always fascinated by them whenever I visited. It became clear he was on a conference call whilst taking a piss. That was weird enough, but he was going hands free. By which I mean he was holding the phone and typing with both hands. He's a lovely guy. Quite posh. But that was degenerate behaviour. #LookMumNoHands npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B Successful haul from the Independent Label Market yesterday. Filling in a few gaps with essential, and one not essential, records. Plus a book. Eldest said "if you need to buy a second tote bag to carry more records Mums going to kill you" 😂. A forthcoming documentary about the 90s free party movement in the UK. The story goes well beyond kids dancing in fields, it was a civil liberties movement and it scared the hell out of the establishment who responded heavy handedly and sought to change the law to restrict the public in general. https://djmag.com/news/documentary-90s-rave-culture-and-free-party-movement-premieres-month-watch-trailer npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B Had a lovely barbecue with the family, simple, no stress. Just good company, music, chat and a few drinks. The Young Team enlightened me about a local weed dealer known as "Mr Streets". Intriguing. I had to know more. I imagined some hippy type guy or someone like The Dude, from The Big Lebowski. No. Apparently he's a nondescript 15 year old who looks about 12 and delivers to a number of benches in the local park. Added bonus, he's always on bike and will more often than not arrive doing a wheelie (his signature move). In my day there was no such showmanship. Weed dealers have certainly upped their game. I'm putting this down to TikTok. npub1vnjd3k0l9clzfewesceu9vpu80mfq77w94zp8gcv3ftzn3mel8qs9qdapa Mat B Your regular reminder that at his wedding to Iman, Bowie had a group photo taken with Bono, Ono and Eno. But it's relentless. What bothers me most, is that people in the US aren't aware of the damage being inflicted upon them. The press seems compromised. Today the US agreed to potentially allow half of its national forests to be open to loggers. In Europe that would be a scandal. I'm not sure it even made the news there.
