I think it's superior in spite of its flaws.
There are things DV does well, like he gets closer to the theme of dangerous heroes. Lynch's Paul is nearly a Mary Sue, except for the emphasis on training and bloodlines.
And yeah, there were a lot of Lynch's regular in the movie. Half dozen or so people from Twin Peaks.

Villeneuve stole the sense of grandeur from the Imperial household.
As a result, in the climax of Part 2, there is far less "imposition" when Paul makes them stand before him. Walken just plays some old white dude (himself) who needs to be put in his place.

but by the God Emperor, what they did to Shaddam IV in Part 2 was a tragedy. In the book Shaddam Corrino was legit, had control of the reigns of power, but the man didn't stand a chance against Paul and the Fremen.
They didn't have to present him as an tottering incompetent to make that apparent. Defeating an old dude who shits in his space aged lounge suit doesn't elevate Paul.
The way Lynch manifested the character is so much better then Villeneuve.

I don't have a problem with the more overt way they presented Jessica's manipulations in Part 1 and 2.
If you want to have a female character that drives the plot, you don't need to destroy Chani. Just.elevate Irulan, which they started doing in the second movie Or make Alia a bigger part of the story, like in Children.
I don't recognize this and all I see are a bunch of female characters modified to align with the star power of an actresses playing them.

I read that in college or recently after graduating and haven't read it since. It was a really weird mixture of genres: flying cars in a world with demons and such. But as I recall there was some kind of vice-as-commodity or at least commercialized; literally advertised on billboards with imps or succubi in the first chapter.
I think I read Green Mother or Red.Sword and then gave up. But series is one I still reference and recommend.

my musical tastes jumped straight from the 60s rocky folks listened to ( The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Doors, The Who, The Stones, CCR, The Animals) to a brief stop in post new-wave rock (U2, INXS) and a dash of skate rock (EMF, Jesus Jones, Ned's Atomic Dustbin, Big Audio Dynamite) before settling in on Grunge and Industrial in college and after.

I read the original "I robot short series" somewhere. I'd swear I read Naked Sun, but if it was tied into the robot series I missed it.
I read the first three Foundation books two of three times. I tried reading later novels in the series, but they didn't click.
The short story Nightfall is great, I couldn't bring myself to read the novel length version.
1) the short story was nearly perfect
2) silverberg is a fine editor of anthologies, but I've never enjoyed his writing.
