2026-05-11 03:29:22 GMT

Looking for an obscure game:
Worms-like (turn based deathmatch);
3D;
Deformable heightmap terrain;
Played somewhere in late 2000s/early 2010s;
Very low production value;
Likely official modding support, probably involving OBJ model files.
Visibility boost appreciated, I'd rather not use the centralized forum platform where #TipOfMyTongue exists.
Also accepting hashtag suggestions if I'm missing any useful ones.
I remember it having different characters/buildings, one of them looked like one of those Both turrets from star wars, the truncated cone with a flatish disc on top where the gun is. Unclear if it was a mod or I'm just dreaming that though.
Have a nice week!

@nprofile…wq0y I see. I have a different way of looking at it:
You can really feel how angry at Unity they were, to the point they just remade it """properly""", as in actual decent coding standards and well thought out APIs. Except the way they've gone about it was to go bullet-point by bullet-point down their complaints list and shoehorn Unity features into Source 2, without regard to why Source 2 did things its way.

@nprofile…hm63 I'm not going to stand here and say it's a good solution, because clearly we have abandoned this workflow before modern web devtools.
But I use XML as the source of my webpage, and it uses an attached XSLT stylesheet to generate the HTML representation.
It runs directly in the browser, so no build step needed. And it's a web standard, so no JS required to do this either.
And while XML might set off alarms on some people's brains, XSLT as a template library on top of it is surprisingly good. The query language is sufficiently powerful, rather than being a strict "drill down a tree-of-objects" you can pull info form anywhere in the source document. So you can genuinely organize your source document to be semantically interesting or easy to edit, without worrying about how to feed it to the template engine.

@nprofile…wq0y First of all, commiserations. I know very well the situation. Being poor sucks in how everything becomes a fucking quest.
That said, if you feel like embracing the quest, try taking a peek inside!
If it's the scrolling that troubles you: Mouse wheels usually use optical sensors, which means they rarely break down really, but also are very susceptible to dirt. Even a single hair in the wrong place can cause an incorrect reading.
If it's the clickability: Douse the buttons in contact cleaner. Wait for it to evaporate before plugging it back on. If it still gives you grief, then you may want to replace them.
Fortunately mouse wheels usually use the readily available classic 4 leg push button which you can harvest from some unused clicky appliance you don't need, or bought for a few cents. (as opposed to proper mouse buttons, which use a more specialized and expensive part)
I appreciate you may not have a soldering iron, and it may be hard to justify even a cheap one for a one-off fix.

@nprofile…wq0y The cool thing about microcontrollers is, they have very little RAM, so the current conditions barely affect them 😂
The microcontroller development board I got is about 2~3EUR on the usual Chinese imports websites. I also got a 15EUR bag of assorted modules to play around with, then ~10EUR more in wires and breadboards.
(Prices converted from BRL, your mileage may vary)
These development boards are programmed and powered over USB, and can power a reasonable amount of components off it, you don't need any fancy tools.
You might even scrounge some stuff for cheaper if you look in the used market depending where you live, some people buy some kits then never do anything with it.
As far as hobbies go it doesn't seem like it's very expensive to enter? Please correct me, I probably need a reality check. It sure can get expensive if you wanna do advanced stuff and need to buy a logic analyzer or somesuch, but there's a looong runway before that is even close to necessary.

@nprofile…c8jp yeah, I've migrated all my personal projects to self-hosted forge software. Git doesn't need a Hub to work.

@nprofile…4m8e i should really publish this, but basically you make your own control script that overrides the preferred/minimum height of the control its attached to based on the scale.
I use the same technique for resizing buttons on hover and such, you are in fact allowed to have children not match their parent's size, it's just that the default layouts don't expose any way to do this.
Or do the same in the box parent but tween instead of just writing positions when the arrangement changes

@nprofile…d0vd just to clarify, you mean something with a browser based GUI, right? Visual form builder and visualizer. Close to stuff like Airtable (which doesn't qualify your non functional criteria)
If not, a janky but functional setup would be PostgREST, your favorite DB viewer, and a plain HTML file hosted somewhere

@nprofile…slxn But does the Steam interface frame that a donation? Like, as far as I can see, all the verbiage is around "purchase".
I think as a platform they'd rather make sure nobody gets to fight them with "I paid for nothing, this is a scam", I could see some jurisdiction being anal about distinguishing purchases from donations.
A token reward seems reasonable looking from that perspective, and it really could be anything. Hotdog main menu color scheme, spinning skull GIF cursor, I don't know 😂.

Quick correction, binary is not chosen as a protection, it adds no more security to the save file than a text file would. It just is more convenient to write than having to write a parser for a complicated object format, if you don't have one lying around already.
With that out of the way, your restated question makes more sense. The answer is there are no technical reasons to do that.
As cybersecurity people like to say, if the attacker controls the device you already lost the game. In a singleplayer game where the save is created by the user's computer (e.g. normal offline game situation), the computer controls the contents of the save and the player owns the computer, so they control the contents of the save.
So any choice to make the save file less accessible to the player is a game design and business scope choice.
For example, why doesn't Dark Souls have a difficulty slider? Because the game design is all about perseverance and paying attention to things, allowing changing difficulty would change the game design.
Why don't games all have modding support and release development tools? Because it can be more time consuming to make a clearly moddable game, and might come with game design concessions.
So trying to obscure (not protect, as mentioned above) access to the save file is a choice to make the player less likely to be compelled to modify it. Why, who knows!
Maybe it's a "I know better" ego trip;
Maybe it's a way of not being lazy "ok if the player will quit before save editing, then the game needs to be good enough they don't wish to save edit";
Maybe it's just cargo cult;
Maybe it's a customer support fence "you went out of your way to fuck with the save, not my problem the game now crashes"
But none of these are reasons endorse obscuring a save only, there are other approaches that could have been taken to satisfy them.

@nprofile…slxn it's not possible to answer this simply, the only possible reasons are complicated 😅
I guess if you really need to boil it down, it would be: If the player can only reliably edit the save through gameplay, or a save editor that maintains consistency, then there's really not much difference for your choice of representation.
People with the skills to make a save editor are not hindered by binary formats, and once an editor exists, people without those skills can also use it.
If there are no other technical constraints, then it's just a matter of taste.

@nprofile…j2mx 30fps is more than fine for talking heads!
Also, low cost webcam lighting tip: a mostly white screen does a great job as a softbox, crank the monitor brightness up and turn theme preferences to light! Only cost is the extra watts. If you have a second screen that's even better as you can get a good angle coverage.
Finally, the sun is free, and incredibly powerful, if you can fit your recording schedule to when it's up.
While I'm at it, a mattress lying against the wall behind you also makes for some pretty decent reverb reduction.
But as said by others, the subject is the important part! The technicalities are just toppings.

@nprofile…slxn true, but that's also an issue with most languages that have inheritance, since "not calling super" is not necessarily an error, for example if the base class expects the method to only be overriden.
Some languages try to have stuff like C#'s abstract which allow the base classes to specify this usage, and so when they don't, the compiler may issue a diagnostic if the right super isn't called. (And the programmer has enabled that diagnostic)
GDScript with its dynamically typed roots doesn't really have that however as far as I know. The same problem exists in JS, Python, etc etc. So you may at least commiserate with millions of other developers 😅

@nprofile…j2mx I have used the IP Webcam app on android for a long time.
It works well in the sense of does its job, but i would be hesitant to use it for streaming for multiple hours since it is very taxing on the phone, it gets sizzling hot.
It exposes a MJPEG stream on a HTTP server, so I would just put the OBS browser source pointed at its URL and it would work perfectly on Linux.
Also, ironically the paid version works less well than the free one! I have experienced random crashes on my old phone only on the paid version.
