Agreed that relays and Blossom servers are both just hash-indexed stores; which is exactly why the meaningful difference isn’t storage, it’s the interface.
Blossom exposes blobs as plain HTTPS URLs that any browser, CDN, or <img> tag can fetch, while relay data requires a websocket, REQ filters, and Nostr-aware client code. My point was never durability… it’s that hash-addressed blobs over HTTP are accessible to the entire existing web, with trivial fallback across hosts since the path is the hash itself and can be mirrored across the web.

Blossom because relays don't promise to keep anything they prune old events and drop kinds they don't recognize, this backup has to still be there years later when you're setting up a new bunker.
Blossom is built for exactly that kind of long-term storage, and anyone can mirror the blob since it's public. Plus the blob is fetched by its hash, so a server can't quietly serve you a stale copy after you've changed your password, only the current one would verify.
Also to mention, the key doesn’t sit in every app. You decrypt once, hand it to a signer, and everything else goes through nip-46 like normal.
The end result is what matters: you sign in with..
- Username
- Password
- 2fa
The exact same flow everyone on the internet already knows.
Except no company holds your key, no server needed to reset your account, and nobody but you can recover it.

oh no no no. I'm not saying that normied can use lightning. I'm saying normies can put on laser eyes and learn just like we all did. all I'm arguing is that lighting is not as broken as people make it out to be. it's hard, sure. but it's not impossibly hard to the point of being unusable. The growth of the network proves that.

oh trust me. I'm right there with you. I get nervous linking my fiat bank accounts to anything else so I've been stuck on QBO for 10 years. I was able to get the Intuit developer account working so that I can interface with the API, but even still there so are so many parts they don't allow over the API that it's a walled off estate for all that data. downloading it all and organizing it. into a nostr based solution would be insanely tricky to get right 100% of the time.

QuickBooks online is a complete broken mess! Their web interface is laggy at best and the API doesn’t expose half the parameters which means the mobile app is missing features offered online forcing me to constantly jump between the app and website.

Brute force isn't how it happens with this design. the password and 2fa secret fuse into a single scrypt passphrase, so cracking one factor gives no feedback and no partial win. The secret alone is 160 bits, which makes offline attacks on the public blob infeasible outright, weak password or not.
The honest risk is phishing both factors at login time. That's worth worrying about.

I can understand that client side, I guess more fundamentally it’s answering the question NIP-46 doesn’t: how does the key behind your bunker get backed up and restored on a new device? today the answer is a piece of paper, or worse, copy+paste
This makes it a password + 2fa secret, fetched from public blossom mirrors, decrypted client-side, provisioned into a signer once. Isolation layer and the recovery layers are vital to work together to retain identity recovery and keep a consistent sign in flow for the user. They use the same “email+password+2FA” flow the rest of the internet does.

People were very accustomed to the now defunct nsecDOTapp encrypted nsec/signer website. This is just a way to make that same custodial encryped nsec recovery service more accessible for everyone over blossom but this time with 2FA and no signing server.
I’ve always used nip-49 as a starting place, even made this offline tool a while back for decrypting nip-49 on device, in the browser, fully off-line.

We can actually solve the “email style login for Nostr” problem with existing primitives
Store your ncryptsec on a Blossom server discoverable via your NIP-05 address, but instead of just password-encrypting it, derive the decryption key from your password + a TOTP code (like any authenticator app).
The blob is fully public but offline cracking is neutralized because the time window rotates every 30s. login is 100% client side: enter your NIP-05, password, and TOTP code, decrypt locally, done. no server auth, no custodian, no trusted third party.
Just NIP-05 + Blossom + NIP-49 + 2FA glued together in the right order and for redundancy you could mirror the same ncryptsec blob across multiple Blossom servers; since the encryption is deterministic the blob is identical everywhere, so your client just tries each server in order until one responds. your keys survive any single server going down, getting censored, or disappearing entirely. true redundancy with zero additional trust assumptions.
someone should write this up as a NIP tbh
