that's what noreturn means, it's "if the execution reaches here, the program ends", so the compiler can assume that the function will never return if it reaches there

2026-10-05 01:52:26 GMT

- reply

IIRC that's because of "efficiency", because function path analysis might not always catch dead code paths, turning a missing return into an error would make code paths that would never be reached error out because of missing returns (that reasoning is dumb though, tiny bit more code to return is fine compared to the bugs lol, but that's C++ for you)

2026-09-21 22:39:52 GMT

fixed-size arrays aren't like pointers, they're fully accounted for by C++, so there's no downsize from using them compared to std::array, as long as you don't decay them _into_ pointers, and you can pass them aroud (as references) while keeping their bounds in C++ unlike in C
https://godbolt.org/z/4fs5j16z5

2026-09-21 22:26:20 GMT

- reply

what i mean is, std::array isn't a solution to fixed size arrays, it's another way to do them, non-std::array fixed size arrays are very much still valid and a lot of the time still a good choice in C++ (would be a different case if the stdlib had bounds-checked accessors, but since it doesn't, both are equally valid)

2026-09-21 22:15:50 GMT

- reply

tbh std::array isn't an alternative to C arrays, it's an alternative to fixed-size arrays, which are still pretty decent for C++, especially since they can be template-specialized for and have a known bound instead of only decaying to unbounded pointers like in C, the alternative would be more like std::vector

also reading the JEP closer, the `==` thing seems to just be an implementation detail "it'll mostly be the same as .equals() except when it isn't so just use .equals() instead"
> The == operator and the equals method will often produce the same results for value objects. For some value classes, however, instances may be interchangeable (i.e., equals) even if their field values are different (i.e., not ==). **To test whether two value objects represent the same value, use the equals method. When declaring a class, define equals in a way that always returns true for interchangeable instances.**
(emphasis from the JEP text itself)

also, they can still be null lmao

like, this is what makes it misleading to me:
> Do not ask developers to learn new semantics for memory management or variable storage. The Java language should continue to operate on just two kinds of data: primitives and object references.
it's doing fake values using references

2026-09-18 22:57:00 GMT

- reply

i might've misread the JEP but i'm pretty sure it doesn't have copy-by-value/pass-by-value at all, it only fakes it by making the objects immutable and copying/passing the pointer

2026-09-18 22:20:49 GMT

- reply

it's misleadingly-named, not that the description of the feature itself is misleading, but that the term "value" with relation to a type tends to mean value _semantics_ for most if not all languages, not just that a type can be inlined

2026-09-18 21:07:47 GMT

- reply

isn't value objects that one horribly misleadingly-named JEP that doesn't actually add anything resembling structs or pass-by-value, and are just old-ass objects that _allow_ a few extra optimizations by the JIT?

2026-09-18 18:00:01 GMT

- reply

yeah, but the depth depends on the halving, instead of being a simple "loop" like regular recursion would be

2026-09-18 17:50:08 GMT

- reply

i don't think it can because it's double-recursion
```
recurse(firstHalf)
recurse(secondHalf)
```
if it was just
```
return recurse(whatever)
```
then i do believe compilers can optimize it

2026-09-18 17:43:41 GMT

- reply

to be fair it's like log2(N) depth so it probably wouldn't overflow lol, even an array with 800k elements would only need 20-deep recursion, and since it's split on the heap (i hope) it wouldn't use that much of the stack per depth
