I submit that perhaps you are thinking of an overstated version of papal infallibility that the church doesn't hold. I also believe that Francis is willfully misunderstood. Yes he speaks in a messy way, but liberals interpret everything he says in an overly worldly way hoping to mislead people in their direction and conservatives interpret everything he says in an overly worldly way so they can be seen as more righteous than the Pope.

Excellent premise, and beautifully argued as well. I wonder about trust, however. One of the main points of the practice of Catholicism is to grow in trust of the Father. It is what Adam failed to do and what Christ did perfectly. "Father in to your hands I commend my spirit."
Faith and trust seem to be intrinsic to the nature of reality. See Kant's critique of reason, Gödel's incompleteness theorem, and Descartes. We can't know without believing something unproven or trusting in someone.
Bitcoiners, however, like to talk about trustless protocols. Many see Bitcoin as trustless money and want to apply similar approaches to other forms of human activity. This is a false notion.
Nothing can operate in a truly trustless fashion. We trust the core developers, we trust our hardware, we trust our cryptography, we trust that 50% of miners won't collude, we trust that societal protections will keep someone from beating us with a wrench for our keys.
I like to reason things out for myself, but I cannot prove my base assumptions, nor can I personally verify all the spiritual and behavioral guides that I need to live well. I need to outsource my reasoning to something I trust. For me the only guide that has agreed 100% with everything I can reason for myself is the Catholic Church. Maybe that is because I am a cradle catholic, but it's batting average is too good. Giving it my trust as a proxy to trusting God is practical.
So I agree, Bitcoiners need the Catholic Church, but not only as a natural fit, but also as a correction.

I care about speed because I'd rather hear words at the end of a "thought much and said little" process than a stream-of-concious word dump.
Also I like math and logical reasoning. Language is only sorta useful for that. We have to come up with special definitions of words for logical contexts. Programming is an excellent case. By if we mean "if and only if" and or is not exclusive OR. If the symbols, oft times, WERE the conclusion I wouldn't have to hold so much in my head at once.
You'll have to forgive me, I want this to be able to solve the twin prime conjecture, but I run into a hard limit on the complexity that I can reason about at once. I wonder if I could offload some of the work onto a symbolic system that maintains part of the state for me.

That is a great point. But having something on the tip of your tongue is also one of the most frustrating exercises in thinking. It feels incomplete. I have often wondered, however, if we could develop an internal symbol set that was not constrained by time to speed up thinking. By "constrained by time" I mean that words, being serialized sound pressure levels necessarily take time to utter and thus to think.
Since viseospacial reasoning can happen much faster it gives me hope that it is somewhat possible.

Yes. Though maybe not symbolic thoughts. I plainly don't use language to plan complex physical motions in real time. Stuff like deciding a path to take through a bunch of trees. I also don't use language to do mental rotations etc. but I have never succeeded in thinking about anything abstract with language. I have heard of people who claim they don't but I am not sure I believe them.

Language is fascinating. It is a weird communication interface because each of us has our own internal vocabulary. Words are useful because they mean similar things to many people, but there is no way to ensure that words have identical meaning between people.
This is really powerful because it allows language to act as a communication and translation layer between completely unique environments (heads) the only sure way to communicate is through dialog in order to come to a shared understanding.
This makes bandwidth low, but I think that is a feature. If bandwidth were high I might not be able to distinguish between my own thoughts and yours. I wouldn't know which ideas need closer verification. The slow twisted process of language is what builds our sense of self.
It also allows different minds to treat ideas differently. This is a defense against general exploits and a source of new ideas.

Not really. I could introduce an encrypted VoD event type, that all major studios support. I split my videos into sections and refuse to give up the key till 30 seconds after you download an ad. Granted you could then make a Nostr client that downloads the ads ahead of time and skips them. Then I make sure not to send the ad until the correct time has elapsed.
Next you cache the content but then I DMCA you. Next I have signed clients that promise not to let you copy the content and we are right back where we started.
People will download the signed clients because they don't care about anything other than whether they can watch Lonely Wives of Svalbard or not.
Embrace, extend, extinguish still works.
The only way to prevent that is to make it unnecessary and inconvenient. If creators have a way to monetize content in a protected way they won't be inclined to sign on to some anti-priacy racket.
I don't actually have a good answer to this. I hate ads, subscriptions, and paywalls. My opinion might change if we really do solve the micro transaction problem via crypto.

If nostr succeeds there will eventually be advertising. Not because it is a necessary good but simply because advertisers follow attention, and people who attract attention will follow money. Not all, but money does free up time to do more attention grabbing. I waffle on whether it makes sense to build in advertising models to begin with so users have as much control as we can give them. In any case nostr should make it impossible to have unskippable ads.

Drat! I saw an interesting reply from @npub180c…h6w6 to this note. Where did it go? I agree with his main point that the vast majority of people don't want to run a server. I start from the same premise, without always on and always reachable servers that ordinary people don't have to think about this will never work.
But that doesn't preclude a messy 0 configuration network of clients that act solely on behalf of the user. For instance if I add my npub to a client on both my phone and my laptop they can attempt to find each other on the local network, attempt a hole-punch with a public relay, or use a relay as a TURN server. This in order to share resources for checking hashes or caching data.
If my router had a relay my devices could always fallback to using it for the above discovery. Of course not every home router will be easily addressable, but enough should be that we can use them to find out contacts even if governments go after large relays.

How about both? Make everything a 256bit integer. Generate those from a hash of your string that can be found somewhere else. I can appreciate that. Electric solutions do allow for a high level of commonality, however, which can simplify the whole system freeing up maintainance time for other endeavors.
The current ideal is solar/battery/inverter/heat-pump. That reduces maintenance nearly to keeping the panels clean and at my latitude it almost makes sense to mount vertically anyway. (Solar fence anyone)
The problem is that I can't produce my own new parts or even aquire them locally. Panels are pretty cheap though so stock-piling is an option.

I haven't ever looked into it, but I often wonder how many w/m^2 the ground can absorb in steady state. Almost every system I have seen was under-sized, because eventually the volume of earth your pipes are running through is overwhelmed by the lack of flux into the surrounding environment. At least I think that was the problem. The may have also just skimped on the heat pump.

We probably need to try both. There are lots of decisions to make on what your client displays in order to rectify the appearance of shouting into the void whenever someone you are talking to also talks to someone on a relay you aren't polling. Do that third parties previous posts get retro-actively added to your view of the thread messing up your history? Do your friends replies to accounts you don't see get hidden so you don't get confused? How does the client know who they are replying to anyway? AI classifier?
If you have instancing on one relay is there moderation? If not how do you handle spam?

Price's law states that half your output will be generated by the square root of your total workers. I follow 40 accounts. I would expect half the notes in my feed to come from 6 accounts. Instead 70% are from 1 account. Do I need to encourage everyone else to post more or does @npub1m4n…c2jl need an intervention?
I kid of course, she does have interesting things to say, but it makes me reflect on how I post. I generally only respond. It isn't because I don't think about things, I do constantly, but it never crosses my mind to post what I am thinking unless it is already a topic of discussion.
I am grateful for accounts that break the ice on topics that I have thought deeply on but never considered sharing unprompted. How do people make the decision what to impose on their followers? No. I am interested in the supernote, but I actually like the no apps approach remarkable takes. I was part of an experiment with giving students a laptop in college for linear algebra. I nearly failed that class as a result. Technology generally gets in the way of education. Not to say kids shouldn't learn tech, I am a programmer after all, but most of the time it needs to stay out of the way.

My main reason for not taking him seriously was that he constantly described the current theories using language that demonstrated that not only did he not understand the theories he was proposing an alternative to, he didn't even know the meaning of the words he was using to describe it.
I am very happy to entertain alternatives but it was all too clear that he didn't actually have alternate ideas, he just had misfiring synapses chosing words nearly at random. Not completely random, the words generally had a similar sound to the one he probably actually wanted. I just hope that he is ok.

I hope you can duplicate the remarkable experience and improve on it in several key ways. I have 4 in the house for homeschooling. They are terrific because it is basically just a slate like the old days. A slate with a memory. No distractions for the kids, not figuring out software, just writing and learning.
Where remarkable falls down is that I can't easily transfer their work to mine for correction. Fix that without losing the simplicity and I'll take the hit to spring for a batch. Allow me to collaborate/grade peer to peer with no subscription and we'll be friends for life.

The nice thing about quantum mechanics is that most of us don't understand it well enough to prevent us from using it as a clever analogy for other phenomena that we also don't understand.
For instance, while writing the previous post I decided that the female propensity for existing in a superposition of decision states is what allows them to be superior multi-taskers.
The mind-boggling part is how they can maintain the superposition of a world where they completed task A and another where they completed task B even after I collapse the wave function by observing completed task C.

It is kind of incorrect to say that Rust doesn't have null. The Option Enum has a None variant that gets used all the time. What Rust doesn't have is nullable types. Instead it adds 'Some' as a sort of "not null" this forces you to always handle the null case by forcing you to handle the not null case.

You could tie ratings and reviews to a receipt. Maybe specify a separate portion of the invoice and receipt that is signed apart from the price or other sensitive data, so either party could "prove purchase" along with the review.
This doesn't stop them from creating false reviews if they are in cahoots with the "buyer" but those wouldn't show up in your web of trust.

It will be, if you can solve logistics/customer service.
A seller should be able to ship a box of stuff to an address, make a listing and then collect satoshis as orders roll in. On the flip side they should be able to pay someone to handle returns and other customer service issues.
If they do decide to handle everything themselves, the User experience should be the same. That way we can have competing drop-shipping services plus DIY all in one interface.

All fair points. That happens on average. But what about you? What about your girl friend? Are you average? Are you content to be average? Maybe you are someone who can go into it with eyes wide open and so your "yes" will mean something. You know the risks so when trials come you aren't going to bail, you are going to have difficult conversations, you are going to make sacrifices for the, demand sacrifices of the other, and just do what it takes for love.

There are no guarantees in life. Divorce aside, you could get married and have your spouse die, get sick/injured, lose interest, buy NFTs, etc.
Marriage, like life, isn't about what you get out of it, it is about what you give to it. Do you love your gf? What are you willing to lay on the line to give them the best possible life? Getting married is, or should be, a complete surrender of yourself for your wife, your children, and the future of humanity. Encrypted in a distributed filesystem. Distributed between your own devices and any backup agreements you have with close contacts.
Most application specific keys would be unlocked as needed by a bearer token from authorized applications. Even if they had access to your key file they could only get the keys they are already authorized to use, and which will expire anyway.
The master key would get unlocked by a passphrase or similar that you train people to never actually use, unless they are rotating keys. Kind of like how cert chains work.
1) Bob creates a master keypair
2) Bob immediately creates and signs domain specific keypairs, communication, banking.
3) Bob locks his master keypair with a key derived from a passphrase and a server key for his parent device and an on device nonce.
4) Bob uses his domain specific keys to create application specific keys.
5) Bob befriends Alice
6) Alice agrees to be a sort of notary for Bob. They do a key exchange that Bob uses to re-encrypt his master key instead of the server key.
7) Bob deletes the nonce on his key server thereby locking his original key file forever.
8) Bob can now only unlock the new key file by repeating the key exchange with Alice.
I am somewhat making this up as I go, but I have thought about it a good deal in the past. You can specify the key derivation however you want and do it as many times as you want. This way Bob could require help from Alice AND Alicia for additional security or Alice OR Alicia for flexibility. You could do N out of M friends from a trusted list.
You just don't want people to have to know that is what is happening. All of the above is automated.
There would need to be some careful UI choices on your trusted friends devices so even if Bob is completely compromised, the attacker would have to convince Alice they were really Bob in person. Maybe that feature only works via nearfield communication etc.
To keep Bob from just going to Alice to help rotate his keys and reclaim his account the attacker would have to compromise Alice as well. Under and N out of M scheme (death happens) it would get pretty difficult.

Which is why you design your UI such that no one needs to know about key pairs. "I gave my friend a blue check by comparing faces on our phones!"
No need to mention that the faces are generated from a DH key exchange and that picking the matching faces verifies and signs your friend's public key.
Also, have keys only sign application specific keys so normal people don't access their root key except on occasions so rare that it wouldn't be a problem to appoint a custodian that gives you permission to unlock your own key.

Only because this is the thing I think is important. I want whole planets dedicated to pandas just because we can. I've already encountered authoritarians that think no one should be allowed to leave. Sounds like a thing the E.U. might attempt.
