@npub1lh5…n08y it looks like the “Censor text” setting is on for your podverse. It uses a big open source list of words to obscure with * when enabled. Here is a screenshot of where it can be disabled. I’m pretty sure it is turned off by default on all fresh installs of Podverse. Maybe there was a version released a long time ago where it was on by default though. Hope that helps.

@npub1y6j…fn6l yes afaik Apple CarPlay should be working for months now. I don't have a car with CarPlay or Android Auto support tho so I only know what works in the emulators.

- reply

@npub1n9j…nza0 yeah, that is our worst case fallback option. A big tradeoff though since a lot of people depend on Android Auto support for convenience and due to laws in their country.

- reply

Worst case scenario to prevent Podverse from getting removed from Google Play is we'd need to disable Android Auto...which is a pretty bad scenario.
Going to try adding test requirement info into the release notes, and hopefully some human on the other side at Google will see it and realize what needs to be done. Not sure if there is a better way to get this test info to a tester...

Is it even possible to contact a human being at Google Play who can explain what the issue is? Who can explain why they are accepting some apps with "Draw over apps" as an AA requirement, but not Podverse? Who can confirm if they're even trying to accept the permission in their tests? Seems like all we ever get is a template response to our appeals that sheds no light beyond the initial rejection.

2024-08-08 21:36:14 GMT

Podverse's standing in the Google Play Store is in a precarious position.
Our latest update is getting rejected, and they're saying "Application does not load in the Android Auto environment" but in our tests with the AA emulator, as long as the "Draw over apps" permission is enabled, Podverse + AA is working.
The thing is, we HAVE to release an update to Google Play that increases the SDK version of the app in the next few weeks, or Google Play says they'll remove the app 😞

⚠️ Maintenance Tonight ⚠️
We will be performing server maintenance around 8pm US Pacific time. The mobile app will only work in offline mode during this time. Expected downtime is ~30 minutes.
We've choosen Friday night as it is one of our lowest traffic times.
The goal of this work is to further optimize our database, by dropping unnecessary, bulky indexes and columns, and adding more efficiently designed tables.

2024-04-22 19:19:30 GMT

- reply

Have any devs resolved this problem on Android before? I'm not seeing a way to increase the number of redirects allowed by Android OS, so the only fix seems to be to follow each redirect separately then load the final url in the downloader directly.

2024-04-22 19:17:44 GMT

Some podcasts use up to 6 tracking related redirects before their server finally delivers the file to you.
If you're noticing some podcasts failing to download on Podverse for Android (but playback by streaming works), we are running into a "too many redirects" error with our downloader library.
We're investigating a way to fix it in 4.16.2.

⚠️ Podverse is down for maintenance ⚠️
Sorry for the interruption. The app may be offline all day today :(
Our database has grown excessively over the past 3 weeks. We are investigating why, and also going forward with deploying an upgrade to our database, and changes that will shrink the size of our database going forward.

Podverse is back online.
There are still some maintenance jobs running, so we don't expect the app to be running full speed until those are finished. That may take several hours.

2024-04-06 20:20:18 GMT

Podverse will be offline for 5-15 minutes while I do some server maintenance. I think I've identified the source of our server performance issues, and should have a fix ready to go after maintenance.

2024-04-06 18:15:42 GMT

Restarting our Docker API container seems to have brought performance back to normal...we'll be monitoring to make sure it stays that way.

We're actually having server performance issues ever since I deployed a change to our API 14 hrs ago last night...the change seems pretty damn innocuous so not sure why it would cause an issue. There may be some outages as we try to debug this.

@npub175e…fk4c it’s up to you, but we can always exclude the cacheBust query param for you. If you could let us know if you migrate other feeds we can do that for you. Or I could just preemptively exclude cacheBust on them now if you want to provide a list of show names.

2024-03-18 19:03:40 GMT

- reply

@npub175e…fk4c just set `excludeCacheBust=true` on the Podcast table for your feed, re-parsed, and it seems to work now. Sorry for the trouble!
A long time ago I asked if a cacheBust url param was common for podcast apps, and a couple devs said yes. It's clearly not an ideal practice though as you shouldn't have to worry about disallowing url params.

2024-03-18 18:59:20 GMT

- reply

@npub175e…fk4c I think I know what is going wrong. We add a cacheBust url parameter by default to the end of each request, as we had issues with getting cached versions of RSS feeds in the past. It looks like your feed (feeds?) are strict about not allowing URL params. There is a flag in our db I can set to fix this I think. Any idea how many of your feeds this might affect?

hey @npub1vfl…nqkg sorry I missed this. Do you know if you are using our old Umbrel node address, or our newer Alby address?
I have been trying to retire the old Umbrel node as keeping up with balancing has been extra work and I'm trying to reduce the number of things we have to maintain...instead we're letting Alby handle it, and we move our sats from Alby into our cold storage wallet every couple weeks.

@npub1y6j…fn6l sorry for the trouble. We definitely want CarPlay support to be stable.
I'm not sure I am 100% following the steps that lead to this crash. Which steps are happening by pressing the phone, and which steps are happening by pressing the CarPlay display? Could you maybe restate them as an ordered list of steps? like 1) ... 2) ... 3) ... crash? If we can reproduce the bug it greatly improves our chances of fixing it.
Also, does it happen with every podcast, or a specific one?

There is a serious bug in v4.15.1 where your boost message will not be sent with your boost.
The transaction will still be sent successfully, but the message you type will be missing.
This will be fixed in v4.15.2. I'm shipping the update to prod this afternoon, but it takes 2-3 days for App Store and Google Play to publish a new version, and ~7 days for F-Droid to publish a new version.

If you have "popularity tracking" enabled, your listens will be counted by our system and will boost the ranking of music that appears in Podverse.
If you do not have tracking enabled, but would like to, you can do so by going to More > Settings > Popularity Tracking > Enable popularity tracking

@npub1dft…ta3d searching for music is *definitely* tricky, and something we need to solve. I think we need Publisher RSS feeds so we can group multiple RSS feeds under 1 artist (or under multiple artists). That is a new concept though and would require RSS host adoption.

However, if I have an "Add by RSS" episode loaded in the player, and then close and reopen the app, I get the prompt to play the last non-"Add by RSS" episode I played before that.
We have feature limitations with Add by RSS feeds, that we're hoping to fix by mid-January, but in the meantime, if this isn't just an Add by RSS feed issue, then...

@npub1dft…ta3d @npub1mvd…pqg5 great idea 👍 i just created a Github issue for the feature request:
https://github.com/podverse/podverse-rn/issues/2087
"shuffle tracks" is actually a good example of why the <podcast:medium> "music" tag is so helpful in music feeds. When you're playing podcasts, a "shuffle episodes" button is not usually needed, but "shuffle tracks" is standard for music playback, so apps need to know if a track is "music" or "podcast"
kudos to @npub12y5…6e36 for creating the <podcast:medium> namespace:

@npub1zla…samq @npub1aee…gy3u @npub1dft…ta3d splitting the queues will be a significant amount of work, so we probably won't have it in the next release, but we'll at least have a setting to disable the Queue when playing music, so you can play albums and playlists without podcasts in the queue jumping in the way.
I'm open to ideas for handling the queue/s differently, but would also like to get some more feedback before the next round of work.

@npub1aee…gy3u @npub1zla…samq @npub1dft…ta3d like if I’m listening to an album, but I want to hear a song from a different album next, then resume listening to the original album. Queue functions as the “Up Next” override to play whatever you want next.
This is also one of those situations where any one answer may not work best for everyone…configurable settings may be beneficial.

@npub197l…pyc3 for our initial Music release at least we're going to keep Music in the "My Library" tab. If things go well we'll be looking into how to add it as a primary tab on the bottom.

2023-11-19 20:30:58 GMT

- reply

@npub197l…pyc3 glad you love the update! 😄
We have been talking about a Music tab, and it's an interesting challenge. The core of Podverse is a podcast app, and deeper still Podverse is a podcast clip-sharing app. We're hesitant to remove Clips from the bottom, and people have said they like Episodes for a quick list of the latest episodes.
An option would be letting people set which tabs are on the bottom, which is doable but a fairly big programming task due to how navigation stacks work.

2023-11-19 20:27:49 GMT

- reply

@npub1zla…samq @npub1dft…ta3d we could do that easily, just disable the Queue while music is playing...but what if you want to manually add a song "up next"? That's a feature I use in other apps.

@npub1xv3…k75q @npub18ej…7x7w I broke our feed parser for about 12 hours 16-17th of this month 🤦‍♂️ I just manually corrected the feed in PV. If you notice other feeds lacking updates please let us know.
@npub1s0l…zquj i guess our “reparse feeds X seconds ago” job didn’t work? I wonder if the fix I added in our parsers wasn’t deployed yet when the parsers were rerunning? Or not all the parsers were updated?

@npub1xsl…ku66 it looks like the "voice pitch algorithm" we are using is only on iOS, so Android should have a flat EQ by default afaik.
https://rntp.dev/docs/api/constants/pitch-algorithm
I'm changing the algo to Music for iOS when music is loaded. I really have no idea what impact this has on the sound though...

@npub1dft…ta3d yeah that’s correct…I’m not sure how else to handle it, other than setting up separate music and podcast queues, but I think that might get convoluted too…
Basically, with the new setup Queue is “Up Next”, and the auto play tracks fill the queue after that in the background.
I know a lot of people have been using Queue as more like a “save for later” list, but we might need to steer people to use playlists for that purpose instead of Queue going forward.

There are still a bunch of small changes for Music we'll be making this weekend. One of them is changing the audio algorithm, as we think the "podcast/voice" setting may be making the music tracks too loud and not EQ'd properly...also have some more UI improvements planned.

Podverse Music is now available on all platforms in v4.15.0 Beta 🛠️
There are MANY changes to the player in this release. One of the biggest was adding "auto-play next episode from podcast", "auto-play next track from album", and "auto-play next item in playlist".
There are hopefully some bug fixes too. Any help testing would be greatly appreciated!

To support this growing demand, we have enabled IPv6 on our API and web server! 🥳

hey @npub1gup…q5pf I'm sorry for the trouble. Are you using the Apple, Google Play, or F-Droid version?
This seems to happen randomly unfortunately for a small % of listeners whenever we update the app 🤦‍♂️ I haven't identified a root cause yet.
Some ppl report the issue goes away after restarting their phone, or if that doesn't work, deleting and reinstalling the app. Do you have Podverse Premium? If you do it should auto-restore your subscriptions after reinstall. We can give you a free membership

@npub1pml…a3t4 hey! Sorry for the trouble. When your membership expires, the app doesnt work right until you either extend it or log out. We’re a value for value company though so we extend memberships for free by request. I think you emailed us about this so we’ll go ahead and extend it for you.

Podverse has a new and improved F-Droid beta tester track 🎉
This new track should let you automatically install our latest F-Droid Beta releases when they become available.
To join, you will need to add our new beta repo to F-Droid. I just created a setup guide for new testers. Could someone please try the steps in this guide, and let us know if you have any issues?

Podverse is back online ✅
Learned some valuable lessons during this maintenance period. We should be able to shorten the process by a lot next time it's needed.
Thank you @npub1s0l…zquj for all your help!

Podverse is now down for maintenance. We expect to be down for 2-3 hours.
We're updating our database for better chapters and value time split handling.
Sorry for the short notice :[ we need to add an in-app and website popup to notify people in advance when our maintenance will be.

@npub1y7j…3uvj aw thanks that's a great review 😊
Tbh I personally never use Siri (I don't even have CarPlay), and the only AirPods functions I use are play/pause. Could you explain the features you're looking for more?
We actually just added handling for Google Play commands recently ("play <podcast name> in Podverse"), as it was required by Google to release Android Auto. We could probably reuse much of that logic for a Siri implementation...

@npub1msv…4hr4 hello, yes we just released Android Auto support! There is however a special permission ("draw over apps") you'll need to enable for it to work.
I just created an FAQ page for how to enable the setting. Please let me know if you have any questions:

@npub16yk…gh74 it's definitely a concern...but I'm assuming for now it's some kind of automated bureaucracy issue, rather than us being targeted in some way. Maybe their process really has identified a bug we need to fix, but we need more info than "something went wrong."

Attempting to send another appeal. Last time we appealed, Google just sent back the identical "something went wrong" error report without any more info. They do at least specify the issue is with Android Auto, but we're not seeing a crash or failed behavior in our tests.
Screenshot of the new appeal. Hopefully it reaches a human being 🤞

@npub1lql…2xmg @npub1pv3…vs8q
for which feature? the queue?
There is some linguistic overlap that I think may not make changing that possible. For example, the "My Library" tab uses the word "Library" but is basically a catch all for all the different types of items (Queue, Playlists, History, etc) a listener can save.
Also, Queue and Playlist are two separate features in Podverse. There is only 1 queue, but you can have many playlists, AND playlists are sharable.

@npub1lql…2xmg @npub1pv3…vs8q we use a self-hosted Matomo instance for tracking pageviews/plays. We have Matomo set to anonymize IP addresses by 2 bytes / decimal places. A more detailed description of our analytics tracking can be found here.

It really should not be that massive of a task, but I'm not sure when I (Mitch) will have the bandwidth to work on it. Schedule is full through end of month.
If someone offers to help as a FOSS contributor and needs a task, I may bring this up as an option.

@npub18ll…44ca glad it's working for you! 🥳
V4V should work but you would need to enable streaming sats on your phone. The player in Android Auto is the same player that runs on your phone, with the same logic.
I'm not sure if boost functionality is something we would want to (or Google would allow us to) integrate in the Android Auto UI. I'm open to adding an "turn v4v streaming on/off" button to the UI potentially, but we need to get through Google's review process before doing anything uncommon.
