I understand why they remain proprietary - to protect this competitive advantage - so I give them credit for making up for that in other ways.

I highly recommend it for people who primarily work in the browser. All of my contributions to Fedora happen in the browser so it is incredible for helping me stay organized. Now other browsers feel too constrained for what I want to be able to do when I'm working.

I would prefer that over the click bait stuff I get served by default. In trying to avoid tracking me, Firefox surfaces like such irrelevant stuff because I think it's trying to be as broad as possible. Too broad. I think I'd rather just tell you I like tech and call it a day lol

2025-11-14 19:35:13 GMT

I think that I would be ok with Firefox selling targeted ads to users who choose what kinds of topics they are interested in when prompted by Firefox.
You could have two options: take a survey that will be used to show you relevant info and ads, or turn all of that off.
If you want to turn it off and harden Firefox, you can
If you don't, now you are opting into a way for Firefox to generate revenue off of information that you explicitly gave them. No guessing about how that info was obtained.

@nprofile…7vxp I love that Linux has quietly gotten so good that now in the last 3 or so years it's been able to comparatively explode in growth and meet people's needs. Then again, maybe this is a weird example since this brand is primarily for businesses that has developed an enthusiast crowd.

@nprofile…4r35 agreed. There have to be people out there that care. And many do, it's just that learning and taking action in this area is difficult for them on its own. Add to that the dimension of whether or not they feel negative consequences as a result of this today, and most choose to prioritize something else to worry about.
But even so it's important that resources exist, especially when the story starts to turn and people start having a reason to care about surveillance.

@nprofile…60ay I checked out your blog and I really like it! Like, it's well written and you touch on a few ideas I've thought about before. Many times folks have blogs and they collect dust, but you've been updating so often that I had to take a look. Nice job!
Also, you write well. Like even when the topic itself is not so deep, the language is pleasant to read. You've mentioned how you write and edit for work, and I see it!

2025-10-21 20:07:48 GMT

Sometimes it's hard to be a privacy advocate. You can explain how the right to privacy is foundational to democracy and still see people's eyes glaze over. It makes it challenging to provide resources when you're not even sure that anyone wants to engage with them.
Idk, I know it's not entirely their fault, but purely from an advocacy standpoint it makes it hard to know what is worth putting energy into.

I still think high tech stuff has been a net positive on the world, and I'm not going to let authoritarianism and surveillance capitalism have the last word. @nprofile…ffsh the deck is definitely stacked against us! In some areas I definitely don't think that people should have to do asuch work as they do today to feel better, like having to take crazy steps to avoid Instagram for example. It's Instagram that should be less addictive, not you who should have to consider a flip phone because of how they get you.

2025-10-19 14:35:09 GMT

I am seeing lots of digital minimalism people come to the conclusion that 'it turns out it was that damn phone that caused all those problems.'
I don't want to disparage that conclusion, but I honestly think it is a stepping stone to the true end of the digital minimalism journey which is that 'technology should work for you, you should not work for technology.'
When you take control of your tech, you get the best of both worlds. You expand your world. You contribute to a better world.

2025-10-19 14:30:47 GMT

Idk if @nprofile…ppv5 has always been talking about legal issues on their socials, especially those that include a call to action for citizens, but I think it's a super smart thing for them to do from a marketing standpoint. The value of following their accounts is higher now because I know they will inform me rather than just tell me about a feature. Not that there's anything wrong with talking features, but they're expanding the value they provide through their socials specifically.

I know Firefox gets hate because of the recent decisions that Mozilla has made in the last year, but I will note that you can do a lot of hardening right from the settings menus to bring Firefox to the state you want it to be in. Most people have their presence spread across 1-3 accounts. Mine is spread over a dozen. It's a lot to check and keep up with. I am fine making that tradeoff, but some days I feel the cost more than others.

Case in point, I have been learning a lot about what it means to be politically engaged, but I have other places where I normally talk about that. However, I don't really have a meta place where I as a person talk about my experience.
Is this the account to do that? I don't think so, even though it is the best place to be myself out of all of my accounts.
But then if I do it somewhere else where I don't have as close a community it's like speaking to the void. Idk, I don't always want that.

2025-09-07 15:07:58 GMT

One of the downsides of trying to compartmentalize my online social process for privacy is that I don't just have one account to share things from. That means that sometimes I have to ask myself which is the best place to share something, which sometimes stops me from sharing anything.

I've been asking myself what are the alternatives to YouTube for people who want to move away, be they viewers or creators? The answer more and more is other mediums. Like legit I'm thinking about whether there will be a small Renaissance of radio, podcasts, websites, books that are made or enjoyed by people who identified that there is another way to get great content. I know all of these things exist and are plentiful, but none of them are entirely owned by one company.

@nprofile…m0an good point! Podcasts are more flexible than video many times.

2025-08-18 17:56:37 GMT

The more I think about it, the more I think that podcasts might be the emotional substitute for YouTube when push comes to shove. Or at least it's one of the options.
Obviously the format is different, but there is tons of overlap and it covers the same job that I look to YouTube to solve.
But podcasts are already decentralized and based on a protocol, whereas solving that problem for video is one that only a few are willing to try.

2025-08-18 12:15:46 GMT

When it comes to Chat Control, age verification, and anything else looking to ratchet up surveillance in 2025, we gotta stand up, especially as nerds.
We know our friends and families may struggle to understand this, let alone push back. That's why we have to be advocates even more, because we're the ones who get how bad these policies are. If nerds don't start annoying the government into submission, no one else will!
It's cringe to put it this way, but nerds need to fight back!

@nprofile…88cw I have wanted to participate more in chat room spaces like this too, but I think I will end up arriving at the same conclusion as you. Mastodon kind of already fills that whole and I don't know what to start with on a chat room, especially one that isn't active all the time. I'm curious about it, but don't know where I will end up.
