Last Notes npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz @nprofile…0qjp @nprofile…wzys Thank you! I hope you enjoyed the eclipse too. npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz What an amazing #SolarEclipse we witnessed this week! I photographed it from Peñafiel in the north of #Spain, home to a beautiful castle that provided the perfect foreground for the spectacular #eclipse. No picture can do it justice though: there's no substitute to actually seeing a total eclipse in person. npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz The difference between a 99% solar #eclipse and a total one is like the difference between smelling food off a fork vs actually eating it. There's no "close enough": if you're not inside the path of totality you're going to miss a unique spectacle. #astronomy npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz The first time this size really hit me (when construction was still in its early stages) was in a talk where the speaker showed one of the 8 m units of the VLT sitting on the Nasmyth platform of the ELT. I vividly remember thinking: "Ok, wow, I get it now." npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz I've been lucky to visit this behemoth a few times, and there are no visuals that can properly convey just how huge it is. But this one comes close! npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz I didn't notice which t-shirt I randomly grabbed this morning, but it's very fitting 🌡️🔥 npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz "100 000 whys" is what I'm screaming right now. npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz Every time I hear someone speaking in Spanish in the U-Bahn npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz Don't tell anyone, but back when I worked there I liked to pretend those tunnels were part of a Doom-style FPS game. (Yes, that's my hand holding a small tripod as a makeshift gun. Don't judge me.) npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz Astronomers make for good office mates. We may accidentally zap you with an adaptive optics laser, but most of the time you'll just have to put up with us while we come up with silly acronyms for our projects. #astronomy npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz This superpower is also our kryptonite: when I moved to Chile it took me a while to figure out that the reason I kept getting lost in Santiago was that I was still subconsciously orienting myself assuming that the Sun was towards the south and not the north. npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz This fake image goes viral every few weeks. It shows the Prohodna cave in Bulgaria, which has two openings resembling eyes. There are many similar images showing fake views of the night sky through the holes, like the unrealistically large #Moon here. I've also seen versions where the Moon has been mirrored into an impossible view. npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz As an astronomer, I feel seen. npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz Thinking of starting a side gig to sell overpriced wedges to keep laptops open... npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz The Venn diagram of people who dislike referring to fellow humans by their preferred pronouns and people who anthropomorphize a piece of code should not have this much overlap, yet here we are. npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz Happy #MayThe4th ! Here's a photo I took at @nprofile…lvcc 's Paranal Observatory in #Chile, with one of our 8-m telescopes aiming its four lasers at the Large Magellanic Cloud, a small galaxy orbiting the Milky Way. npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz @nprofile…5ccq @nprofile…9wmv Same! I read 'Chaos' as a teenager and absolutely loved it. I was learning how to code back then, and prompted by the book I wrote a simple program to visualise the logistic map. I remember zooming endlessly into it, mesmerized by the neverending complexity. Can't think of many other science books that impressed young-me the way 'Chaos' did. npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz I was so impressed by Lumibricks' Alpine Observatory that I couldn't resist the temptation and ended up buying their #Art Gallery. It was a fantastic building experience, the model is packed with details, and it looks great on my bookshelf! npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz This is the most German headline I've ever read. npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz The Osprey Farpoint 40 checks some of these boxes, although it seems that the laptop sleeve is a bit awkward. Maybe Deuter has a similar model? npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz - Volume: around 30L (full-frame camera + 3 lenses + telephoto + accessories) npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz Hey #hiking peeps: I need to replace my old & torn camera backpack with a hiking one + a camera insert. I'm *not* looking for a dedicated camera backpack, they're often overpriced and not as comfy as hiking ones. npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz https://files.mastodon.online/media_attachments/files/116/358/684/402/510/401/original/6140d0e723eed7b2.png npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz "He had grown up in a country run by politicians who sent the pilots to man the bombers to kill the babies to make the world safe for children to grow up in." npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz @nprofile…nmzt *sigh* why can't we enjoy space for what it is... npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz @nprofile…nmzt Do I dare ask what he's said now? npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz They're blocking the bike lane, but they clearly don't give a duck about it. 🦆🦆 #munchen #munich npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz Ah, March, when the #weather in #Munich is "everything everywhere all at once" npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz The assembly instructions were very easy to follow, including the ones to test and install the wires. The wires are versy flimsy, so if you're planning to build this with kids they'll most likely need a bit of your help. One of the wires in my set was broken, but Lumibricks replaced it free of charge. npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz The four minifigures are disappointingly all guys 🙃 A more diverse lineup would've made this set almost perfect. npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz The telescope is a projector, with various interchangeable slides to display different images. It's not super powerful though, it's just a single LED and a small lens. npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz The amount of detail is just amazing, from the coffee machine (without which no observatory can work), the mini solar system model, the computer screens, the panel with a diagram of the expansion of the universe... Even the books on the shelves contain fun easter eggs. npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz Something I love about this model compared to Lego modulars is that in the latter all the interior details remain hidden once you're done building; you have to completely remove the different floors to show what's inside. npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz Really impressed with the Lumibricks Alpine Observatory set! It is loosely inspired by the Sphinx observatory in the Swiss Alps, and as an astronomer I had to buy it. npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz Teal'c would like a word. npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz 'But as for the feast, I don't go in for such things much now. And I had something else to do.' npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz Caption this. npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz @nprofile…w0jz Those commas bother me more than they should 😅 I recently listened to this fantastic episode of 99% Invisible about em dashes, featuring Austen, and as someone who only recently started appreciating em dashes I learned a lot! npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz @nprofile…tqxe what the hell?!?! npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz @nprofile…7w0l "What about second Jupiter?" npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz Don't let this grumpy rant deter you from going out and enjoying the view though! But with so much disinformation going rampant on social media, it’s important to set realistic expectations. npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz In case you've noticed this in the images above: yes, the Moon also orbits roughly within the same plane, so it appears more or less aligned with the planets and the Sun. npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz Jeez, ok, so the planets always look aligned, but surely it's not common to see so many of them at once, right? npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz Fine, so the planets won't look huge, but at least it's rare that they're aligned, right? npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz Here's a Stellarium screenshot showing how the planets will actually look like shortly after sunset. The size of their discs just represents how bright they appear, not their actual size. npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz <Don't worry Juan Carlos, giant Earth in the sky can't hurt you, it's not real, you can write this thread> npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz @nprofile…uk3w Agreed, intent is definitely key here, and major reason why AI slop feels empty and pointless, no matter how "good" it might look from a purely technical and superficial point of view. npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz @nprofile…c9cq "Commoditised" is spot on. npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz @nprofile…wy26 Yes! Free software like Krita is wonderful. Thanks for your work! npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz I'm so tired of the whole "#AI has democratised #art" narrative. Cheap or even free creative tools and learning resources have existed for decades. Not wanting to become good at something is not the same as not having the resources to do it. npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz @nprofile…7q7j In every generation th- npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz This is an interesting approach to "inbox zero" npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz @nprofile…92gu That's the first print of the revised edition, it's none of the two later ones I'm asking about. I'm specifically looking for feedback from people who own both reprints or have seen both first hand, as what I'm asking can't be easily gauged from scans or photographs. npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz Hey Lord of the Rings fans: are there any significant differences between the 2001 and 2017 reprints of the revised edition of Fonstad's "The Atlas of Middle-Earth"? I find the brown cover of the 2017 one rather meh. Are there any obvious differences in, say, print quality, binding, etc. that should make me pick one reprint over the other? Thanks! npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz @nprofile…hq75 @nprofile…z3f9 that's really cool! npub1wcudfyv9agzd6ejeue34g73ug08r0q0rn58mr8xglcr5qu8m48msrurfa5 Juan Carlos Muñoz @nprofile…lvz8 Thanks!
