A new day. A new chance to succeed.
Workman coming to repair some loose pieces of siding this afternoon. Not a big job. Just one beyond my capabilities.
Many of the finicky bits of life are that way these days. I rely on younger, stronger, more knowledgeable people.
Really, I've just had to own getting old. I don't have the strength or flexibility I need.
But, contrary to dire predictions in my youth, I survived to get here. I'll take the win.
I hope, at a minimum, you survive #today

2026-07-09 11:36:57 GMT

A new day. A new chance to succeed.
Bread baking already this morning. It spent the night in the fridge so I could bake first thing.
It's become something of a ritual with me now. Baking every few days grounds me in the world. Forces the ADHD to slow down. To be present in the moment.
Not sure why I find it satisfying, this ancient skill. Working to perfect the crust and crumb.
But it tastes great, if I do say so myself.
May you find something good in your day #today

2026-07-07 13:10:20 GMT

A new day. A new chance to succeed.
Not much on the agenda but I'm eager to get going this morning.
Some mornings are like that. Roaring out of the gate, ready to take on the day.
I've breakfast waiting and a walk outside before the day heats up too much.
My stalled manuscript took on some new life yesterday. I'm hoping that it continues. It doesn't take much to ignite a story, but that spark has been missing for way too long.
I hope you find your spark #today

2026-07-06 13:01:07 GMT

A new day. A new chance to succeed.
Sure, it's Monday but that's just a label. It will be what I make of it.
Simple day.
Trash day.
Grocery store day.
Chop wood day.
Carry water day.
Perhaps write. Perhaps read. Perhaps play.
Perhaps the day when ambition and intention ignite.
Or not.
Definitely a day to clean my glasses.
I have no idea what the day will bring, but I'll be here for it.
I hope your day brings you what you need #today

2026-06-28 13:03:25 GMT

A new day. A new chance to succeed.
I better get this day rolling. Up almost an hour, I still need to take a walk outside. It's not getting any cooler out there.
Nothing much on the docket. A couple of low-key tasks which, honestly, will probably be pushed off until tomorrow.
I'm feeling the need to write again.
Finally.
It comes like a stretching of the skin. An itch that no finger can scratch but a keyboard can reach.
I hope you scratch an itch in your life #today

A new day. A new chance to succeed.
A busy day ahead if I do everything on the list. One of those snowball days where a bunch of tasks become due at the same time.
I'll shift some priorities. Laundry can wait a day. Groceries, not so much.
I'll stack some tasks to run concurrently but at least one will get put off until tomorrow.
No sense in fretting over any of it.
At least in this, I get to choose.
I hope you get to choose some parts of your day #today

A new day. A new chance to succeed.
My last bread baking failed. The starter wasn't ready and the loaf just sat there, wet and glistening for 24 hours.
I baked it anyway, just to complete the cycle but I knew what I'd get out of the oven.
A brick.
Disappointing but only a small setback. I know how to fix it.
These things happen. No matter how successful the past efforts, the next one can fall flat.
I'll just try again.
I hope you find the wherewithal to try again if you need to #today

A new day. A new chance to succeed.
Oh, coffee, my coffee. You betrayed me in the night, but stand redeemed in morning's wat'ry light.
I made the mistake of brewing myself a single cup at dinner last night. Strong. Rich. Delicious.
That one cup lasted until I realized - at bed time - I still nursed it.
Caffeine at bedtime, slow dosed and dripped over hours.
A poor night ended with the aroma of the morning drip.
Resurrected.
May you find the right cup for your day #today

A new day. A new chance to succeed.
Monday brings a morning reinforced by a lifetime of back-to-work.
I manage to ignore it most of the time. Monday is just another morning. With any luck, there'll be another tomorrow about this time.
Sometimes it's useful to lean on it for a little extra boost.
This morning I'm up before the sun but I can see it catching up. I've time to do what needs doing.
It's Monday. I better get at it.
May you find the extra boost you need #today

2026-04-26 12:59:14 GMT

A new day. A new chance to succeed.
Lowery morning with hopes for rain. The unseasonable heat broken up by more reasonable chill.
A quiet chop wood, carry water day, I hope.
The yard work continues as does the bread experiment as I look for a sour dough I like the taste of.
A day to play a little and recover from a trying week. Perhaps write a little. Certainly read some more.
A day to take refuge in my inner world.
May you find the refuge you need #today

2026-04-19 12:57:08 GMT

A new day. A new chance to succeed.
From the morning reading: Renew the root.
Pay attention to fundamentals, especially when completing a cycle and beginning anew.
As a writer, I see the process from conception to published work as never ending. Just another cycle of creative seasons.
It's why I think writing is not any kind of race - neither sprint nor marathon - but a way of life.
As I'm struggling with a new beginning now, it's a timely reminder.
May you find renewal #today

I go to bed around 9 already.
It's the damn cat, waking me at 3 for breakfast. I feed him then lay back down.
It's going back to bed again that's the problem.
I need to convince the cat that 4am is soon enough for his breakfast because 4am is late enough for me to say "enough" for the night. :D

2026-04-18 13:24:32 GMT

A new day. A new chance to succeed.
This sleeping in until the sunrise is getting old.
It seems weird to be peeved by getting another good night's sleep. I didn't realize how much I enjoyed those early, quiet hours. Spending time in hermit mode. Listening to music. Reading willy-nilly. Following rabbits down holes.
Listening to myself think for a few, decadent hours before the day's demands wrestled their way in.
May you have a few, decadent hours and can hear yourself think #today

The morning reading talks of working with day's seams and lines rather than against them.
An odd idea at first but knowing how I react to the day as it unfolds makes a difference in my response to it.
Like the early morning quiet, before others are around: A good time to sit, to think, to write.
You get the idea. Your day will be different but every day has seams I can take advantage of.
May you find the seams in your day #today

It drove me crazy for decades until I discovered that it was an obscure arthritis and got some medication for it.
I've been able to do away with the meds in my dotage but getting a full night's sleep is still a blessing. :D

2026-04-13 13:32:07 GMT

A new day. A new chance to succeed.
I slept in.
For some, sleeping in is a function of opportunity. For me, it's a borderline miracle.
A genetic legacy from my father, an inherited form of arthritis attacks my lower back after about 5 hours in bed. Moving becomes a challenge. The pain from rolling over wakes me. Just getting out of bed hurts.
But once in a while, I'm blessed with 7+ hours of slumber. I'm always grateful for it.
May you find something to be grateful for #today

2026-04-10 11:37:19 GMT

A new day. A new chance to succeed.
Waiting for the oven to come up to temp for a morning bake.
The morning bake grounds me in a way few other activities do. There's just something about the cool morning, the aroma of bread baking wafting through the house.
It's a small thing with ancient roots.
Up before the dawn to bake the day's bread before the world wakes. Standing on the flour-dusted shoulders of generations.
I hope you find something that grounds you #today

2026-04-08 11:47:29 GMT

A new day. A new chance to succeed.
Very little on my docket beyond normal wood and water. No need to go anywhere, although I need to walk my 2 miles.
I want to spend some quality time writing but haven't been able to find my focus lately.
Like everything else, it runs in cycles. My hyperfocus fixes on something and nothing else matters.
Until, suddenly, something else becomes the center.
Rinse. Repeat.
I just need to be patient.
May your patience carry you forward in your goals #today

2026-03-30 10:41:26 GMT

A new day. A new chance to succeed.
I lit the oven while the bread warms up from its night in the fridge. It's way too early to be awake but I need to play the cards I have.
Jury selection later this morning.
I'll need to head down to the courthouse and try to find a place to park. No doubt the stress of needing to be in a crowd has me up and yawning well before the dawning.
Ah well. Fresh bread soon and a relaxed breakfast in my future.
I hope you find some good in your day #today

A new day. A new chance to succeed.
My desk is a mess. I notice it periodically. Strewn with Post-Its, journals, notecards (used and empty), USB drives in various sizes and configurations. Pen cups. Chargers. A layer of dust except for those few places I use every day.
A function of my ADHD probably. A lack of object permanence means I need to see it or it doesn't exist.
A mess but it's my mess.
May you find comfort in the little things, no matter how messy, #today

A new day. A new chance to succeed.
Two hours till sunrise. A lazy morning so far.
I've started pecking away at the new book. Slowly recreating the process from bits and pieces of the Before Time when writing was joy and I was ignorant.
It doesn't get easier. The more practice I get, the more aware I am of the gap between inspiration and execution.
Yet I keep rearranging the kindling and applying a flame. It will catch. Eventually.
May your flames burn brightly #today

I often think of this "meditative practice" as it relates to bread making.
I was going to make bagels today but I needed bread. I'll freeze the second loaf so it doesn't go bad before I can get to it.
Maybe bagels on Tuesday. :D

2026-03-08 12:32:32 GMT

A new day. A new chance to succeed.
Bread baking already. It probably needed a few more minutes after it came out of the fridge. This new yeast is awesome.
Funny how baking the family bread has taken on a life of its own. Every few days, need to bake again. Each time is a new experience. I take notes on time and temperature. Variations in recipe. Recording botched batches and their outcomes.
Nobody will ever see those notes except me.
I'm enough.
I hope you feel like you're enough #today

A new day. A new chance to succeed.
Adventures in baking. I'm trying a new recipe. Irish soda bread. It's expensive in the shop but I have everything I need to make it.
With St. Patrick's Day coming up, it seemed like a fun way to celebrate.
Otherwise, just another day. Weekends have lost their luster now that I work for myself. As a novelist, every day is a work day one way or another.
But doing what I love? Why would I stop?
May you do what you love, at least a little bit, #today

A new day. A new chance to succeed.
I missed a scheduled task yesterday. Something I intended to do but lost sight of as the day unfolded around me.
It's all part of Practice. Not every day runs smoothly. Not every task gets done on time.
For me, it's especially true of health and well-being tasks like my morning walk. If I don't do it early, it tends to slip off the day's list and can disappear if I let it.
The trick is to not let it.
I hope you can get your tasks all done #today

Routines have always been my haven. A skeleton to hold up the day's actions. The right amount of detail without being too fiddly. Only rigid enough to work most of the time.
I don't require perfection. Good enough is, well, good enough.
A quiet day planned. Perhaps it will turn out to be. For the moment, there's nothing that requires my action or attention beyond the normal start of day routine.
May your routine support your day #today

One of those tasks that could be a chore like laundry. Not an every day thing but an interruption in the week's flow.
Yet I look forward to it every time. I keep notes on the sessions. Not tracking my baking progress but marking down the lessons as I go so I remember them better.
I'm excited to try a new brand of yeast.

Not that I don't have things I want to get done, but I have a minor case of nope this morning.

A day for errands. Between various appointments and my morning walk, I'll spend a good portion of the day out and about.
These days happen more rarely now that I work for myself. No more days spent in the office. No more business travel.
Not that it wasn't valuable then. The risks are just too great for me now.

No, I won't get those 2 hours back, but I can pick up where I left off and continue with the day as if I just woke up late.
Which, in reality, I did.
May you wake on time in your day but if you do sleep in, relish it #today

Well done.

A new day. A new chance to succeed.
A few more minutes before I dig into the day, please.
Just a small respite between waking and acting. Time to gather my thoughts. My self. To gird my metaphysical loins.
To sip. To be. To envision a better world.
A better me.
Before the next thing happens.
Then I can move on. Into the day.
Chopping wood. Carrying water.
The grand pendulum swings both ways. It never stops moving.
May your movements be in the right direction #today

A new day. A new chance to succeed.
A day to pause and assess. To pay attention to my Practice. Mindful of what it is rather than pushing to be something else.
There's a peace in doing the needful without becoming mired in the might be. The could be. Or worse, the should be.
I'm not a "you must write every day" guy. Although, I clearly do. A dichotomy I think about on days like this.
Days when I do the needful, even when frivolous.
May your day have some needed frivolity #today

Thanks.
The cold dough is being stubborn this morning. Chilly kitchen and older yeast has made for slow going.

A new day. A new chance to succeed.
I've bread dough warming up on the counter. I wanted to bake early this morning to warm the house.
I've lost track of how long I've been doing this baking thing. Years now but less than a decade certainly.
Funny how time slips away, marked only by milestones that seem to float in a sea of pasts. Lost in the grand scheme.
When was that thing again? I remember living through it but not, exactly, when it was.
May your day matter in your grand scheme #today

A new day. A new chance to succeed.
A chop wood, carry water day. I'll do what needs doing. That list is much shorter now that I work for myself.
I'll take whatever satisfaction the day allows and count my many blessings.
In a neurospicy household, maintaining any status, quo or otherwise, can be a challenge but my family-of-origin stoicism tells me to find the joy in whatever situation arises.
Although I do wish they wouldn't arise so damn often.
May your status be quo #today

That's possible.
It is definitely quieter but I haven't noticed any significant change in the actual temperature. It stays dead on 70F according to the thermometer on my desk.
But it did before the new windows. Probably something about being below grade keeping the basement more stable. :D

A new day. A new chance to succeed.
I feel so very lucky. A safe place to live. Food and water. Survived so many stupid mistakes and unwelcome excursions.
Mostly by luck.
Always by putting one foot in front of the other. Sometimes literally.
Lots of missteps, but even they gave me something. Even if only a reason to never do it again.
I can't claim any wisdom from all the lessons I've learned.
I'll keep looking.
May luck be in your favor #today

A new day. A new chance to succeed.
My eyes don't want to focus this morning. Old man's eyes. They just need a little extra time to catch up with the day already in progress.
Not much on the agenda. Wood, water, etc.
One extra task on the docket that needs a few minutes but I won't do it until the household awakes. I don't want to make the noise it takes.
I'll just sip my coffee and think about breakfast for a bit to let my eyes catch up with the morning.
May you find your focus #today

A new day. A new chance to succeed.
Memory feels more like a sieve than a net these days. Thoughts seem to slip through the holes instead of being held.
I put it down to being distracted, stressed by Everything Happening. To not being sufficiently in the moment to track properly.
Perhaps it's age. My brain is full from a lifetime of meals prepared, dishes washed, beds made (or not), so the moments, past to present, become indistinguishable.
I hope your moments stand by you #today

I baked bread last night. Not my best attempt. My timing was off. Dinner was in the oven when the bread should have been.
Oops.
I didn't take the correct remedial action in the moment and regret it now.
Not the first time it's happened. I hate it when I think of the thing I should have done only after it's too late to do it.
Still. I have fresh bread.
May your day not need any remedial action, and if it does, you pick the right one #today

A new day. A new chance to succeed.
Too early. Waiting on coffee.
Some tasks to do because it's Saturday. Some because the time is right. Others just because I want to.
My Practice has been sluggish lately but still there. I haven't started the next project, mostly because straggly bits of the last one keep tangling my brain.
But I'm still plugging away at it. Sometimes just showing up has to be enough.
I hope you can at least show up for your day #today
