What do Jean Chrétien, Jason Kenney, Alison Redford and David Eby all have in common?
They’ve called for Canada to use - or consider - export taxes on energy and critical minerals that we ship to the USA.
When you’re in a trade war, every bit of leverage matters. We may be smaller than the US, but we have commodities that its economy depends on. We should tax those goods – oil, gas, thermal coal, potash and other minerals to hit Trump where it hurts. Call it playing our trump card.
A majority of Canadians support it. Leaders across party lines are receptive to it. And it will generate billions in new revenue to help workers most impacted by these tariffs.
I’m calling on the Prime Minister to impose export taxes on energy and critical minerals now.

1/ The Liberal government might as well have called its AI strategy “All in for AI”.
This is a document that is heavy on hype, but light on the right guardrails that we need to protect people – and to ensure that the benefits of the technology don’t just flow to a handful of tech giants and investors.
It proposes a massive boost to business adoption of AI, with no concern for the consequences this will have for workers, especially young workers who are already watching careers vanish before their eyes.
This government is imposing a world-changing technology on all of us without any public debate. Instead of putting in place strong regulations to safeguard workers, youth, privacy, and our water and energy supply, they prefer to “move fast and break things” as the Silicon Valley motto goes.

Palantir is deeply embedded in the scariest activities of the Trump regime – enabling everything from mass deportations and lawless assassinations in international waters to ethnic cleansing, genocide, and war crimes.
CEO Alex Karp’s recent online manifesto is a truly disturbing, supremacist screed. One UK MP said it “sounds like the ramblings of a supervillain.”
The city of London, England recently canceled a contract with Palantir.
Why is Canada handing nearly $50 million in public money to this creepy company?
Doing business through a secretive contract with this MAGA-aligned tech giant is totally incompatible with the Prime Minister’s promise to defend Canadian sovereignty.

Cuba is out of fuel, strangled by the US fuel chokehold.
People are dying, systems are breaking down.
This is collective punishment against a people who have done absolutely nothing except live their lives under hard conditions imposed by the US blockade for decades.
It’s a blatant violation of international law, a crime in progress.
Canadians are connected to Cuba: we’ve been welcomed, had great holidays, heard incredible music, done business and made friends.
We need to help Cuba right now, even if it bothers Trump:
Canada should send immediate humanitarian fuel aid, in as much quantity as we can quickly assemble.
And we should be speaking out loudly on the international stage: US military action against Cuba is absolutely unacceptable!
It’s time for the countries of the world to rally and stop this impunity before it takes another sovereign country into chaos.
We have to come to Cuba's aid. What's happening is too cruel, too horrible.

This latest revelation is further evidence that the MOU between Prime Minister Carney and Premier Smith is a gift to the fossil fuel industry.
Prime Minister Carney had already abandoned most of his government’s climate measures to appease big oil and gas. Now we learn that he’s offered them a $1.2 billion escape clause to avoid even the meagre measures remaining.
At this point, it would be more honest to just give Danielle Smith and her oil industry friends the pipeline they crave.

5/ The message to Canadians is crystal clear: the C-suite asks, and Ottawa delivers. If you're a powerful corporation, you go to the front of the line. If you’re struggling to pay rent, feed your kids, or find a family doctor, you’re told to wait.
None of these giant changes make our country more secure, independent, or stable. None of them directly address the cost of living crisis. All of them promise corporate welfare for the billionaire class, and more hardship for the 99%.

It’s time to build affordable homes, a national network of public grocery stores, electric buses and an east-west clean energy grid. Not massive corporate AI data centres unleashed without any democratic debate.
There's also no real data sovereignty in an AI ecosystem dominated by U.S. tech giants. Telus may be Canadian-owned, but it has already transferred 14 petabytes of Canadian data onto Google Cloud as part of its AI strategy.
This is a technology that will bring sweeping changes at a scale and speed never seen before. Canadians deserve real oversight and a robust regulatory framework before we rush ahead.

4/ I have an idea for the Prime Minister: why don’t we pull a Norway?
Let’s put a windfall tax on oil and gas companies that are projected to make $90B in profits this year because of Trump’s illegal war in Iran. Then, let’s use that money to fill up the Sovereign Wealth fund — and invest in projects that benefit Canadians instead of a few wealthy investors and CEOs.

2/ Rather than asking the biggest corporations to pay their fair share, it throws public money at them in the hope that the market will solve our problems in housing, in infrastructure and the cost of living.
This is exactly what the Prime Minister’s Sovereign Wealth Fund does. It’s a mirror image of Norway’s successful model: Norway invests revenue from its public oil company into its fund for the public’s benefit. Prime Minister Carney’s approach is to seed the fund with public money to subsidize big private projects.

1/ Today’s spring economic statement fails to meet the moment at a time when Canadians are getting crushed by the rising cost of everything.
While it was sold by the government as a plan to address affordability, the update contains virtually no new measures to bring down the cost of living — it tinkers around the edges and re-announces existing initiatives.
Meanwhile, there’s not a single new measure to bring in new revenue by taxing excessive corporate profits.

Striking that the Liberals and Conservatives offer the same response to pain at the pump: siphon money out of the public purse instead of Big Oil’s profits.
Oil companies are on track to make tens of billions in windfall profits from Trump’s illegal war in Iran.
It’s their profiteering that’s driving up prices. It’s them who should pay.

Hours after Iran and the U.S. reached a ceasefire deal, Israel launched one of its most devastating attacks on Lebanon to date.
Over a hundred strikes in ten minutes - carnage in Beirut, where hundreds of thousands of displaced people are sheltering.
Hundreds dead, entire neighbourhoods reduced to rubble. Reports of ethnic cleansing and open discussion of permanent military occupation.
Prime Minister Carney has rightly condemned the invasion as illegal, but words are not enough.

Today, the Carney government joined the Conservatives and the Bloc to defeat Jenny Kwan’s No More Loopholes Bill — legislation that would have stopped Canadian weapons sent to the U.S. from being used to fuel the genocide in Gaza.
It’s a deeply shameful vote that suggests they would rather appease Trump than protect vulnerable civilians.

But this moment also shows why voices like Jenny Kwan and her colleagues in the NDP caucus matter so much. They continue to champion human rights, peace, and international justice with courage and persistence, even when few others in Parliament will.

A desalination plant supplying drinking water to 30 villages.
A flour and starch factory.
Oil depots blanketing Tehran in thick black smoke and contaminated rain.
65 schools. 13 hospitals.
Centuries-old heritage sites.
These are the latest targets in the illegal US-Israeli assault on Iran. These are not military bases, they are the civilian infrastructure that keeps ordinary people alive. More than 1,300 people have already been killed since the attacks began, and nearly 6,700 civilian sites have reportedly been struck.
This war has nothing to do with democracy — or even nuclear weapons. Canada must have no part in it and Prime Minister Carney must use every ounce of his influence to put a stop to it.

Your unqualified support of Trump and Netanyahu’s war was bad enough. It’s unconscionable that you’re now considering putting Canadian forces in harm’s way.
And worse: hundreds of civilians have already been killed in the all-out bombardment of dense urban areas like Tehran.

2/ We remember the disastrous outcomes of previous U.S.-led wars of regime change in the Middle East, including in Iraq. They led to hundreds of thousands of civilian deaths, sectarian conflict, and a world that is less safe, not more. The current attacks on Iran must stop now, before the entire region is plunged into conflict, death, and destruction.
My thoughts are with the people in Iran and around the world who are watching this unfold with heartbreak and uncertainty.
Freedom will not come from military intervention by outside powers, it can only come from the Iranian people. War is not the way.

1/ The images coming out of Iran are already unbearable. Reports of an elementary school struck by missiles, killing dozens of people, with scores more killed around the country. Fear and chaos in the streets as families run through smoke and search for safety.
The United States and Israel have launched an illegal act of war while Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu speak openly of regime change. This is what Prime Minister Mark Carney says he supports. He has issued a statement so brazenly belligerent that even Conservatives like Jason Kenney are cheering it on.
It’s a shameful moment that buries all of Carney’s high-minded rhetoric in Davos under the rubble.
These leaders justify this war as serving Iranian liberation. But the courageous movement in Iran that has been fighting tyranny for nearly five decades — and is still reeling from the worst massacre in the country’s modern history in January — will suffer a massive setback from these foreign bombs.

1/ Hi Mastodon community!
A quick update from me. While some might have said, “entering the Fediverse with its unique and engaged culture is totally bonkers when you’re in the middle of a federal leadership race”, we said, “sure, why not? It’s the only platform that really corresponds to our values, and it’s worth trying at least.”
Shoutout to @npub1clv…fsmp who lobbied with relentless grace for this to happen.
This means that yes, the campaign and I are here now. But also, that we’re spread really thin and are not going to be able to engage to the level of engagement that Fediverse culture expects, at least not in the short term.
I’m not a fan of just broadcasting here, but for the next couple of months, that’s mostly what we’ll be doing.
Our young staffer who posts on every social media platform has enthusiastically learned as much as possible about Fediverse practices, and is doing a hell of a job here at posting in a thoughtful way (as some of you have noted).

This post has been on my mind for a few days now, so I’m going to say something about it. 🧵
The Minister of AI having an "ongoing engagement" with the government of Israel on technology and AI is deeply concerning. No, it’s just plain wrong. It makes Canada vulnerable to international legal consequences, and it takes Canada far down the wrong path.
The post itself radiates the same kind of defiant impunity we’ve seen from both Israel and the Trump administration when it comes to flouting international law.

All power to Ubisoft workers in Halifax, standing up for justice and accountability after the company shut down their workplace right after they unionized.
Ubisoft has taken nearly $1 billion in public subsidies. We need to be loud and clear: No tax dollars for union busters!

Honoured to have the endorsement of CUPE Ontario, which represents 300,000 workers — 40% of the Canadian Union of Public Employees’ total membership.
I stand with their heroic members as they educate, care for us, and keep the province running every day — and fight to protect our precious public systems from privatization and underfunding.

Something has shifted in this campaign.
It's not just bigger crowds, great music, and tons of fun (though that too!)
It's a different kind of energy, lifting all of us. It's the experience of collective power, a shared vision, rising up.
It's hope.

Idle No More has transformed this country, putting Indigenous rights at the centre of the national conversation and bringing people into the streets as part of a common struggle for justice. It has opened eyes in profound ways, offering healing and hope that we can overcome injustice together.
I’m deeply honoured to be endorsed by co-founders Sylvia McAdam and Sheelah McLean. To have earned their trust is truly humbling.

Canadians know monopolies are driving up prices. A public option for groceries would give people a real alternative and bring costs down immediately. It’s affordable, practical, and within reach.

Hello Mastodon!
I’m Avi Lewis and I’m running to be the next leader of the federal NDP. Very excited to be part of the Fediverse!
I’m running for NDP leader because it’s time for the NDP to return to its roots—fighting a system rigged for the rich that leaves the rest of us behind.
We can build a Canada based on care instead of greed, but only if we do it together. There are only 4 days left to join the NDP so you can vote in the leadership race, so get your membership before Jan 28th and let’s fight for a government that serves the many, not the money.
