main open issues:
- case must to be heavier (and with rubber feet) so it doesn't slide around on the table, probably made of metal
- acoustics need to be dampened somehow (foam inside?)
- best position for cable outlet?
- which existing palm rests could we recommend?

@nprofile…msjp i think we can stream the required glyphs from flash/disk into a cache/atlas, and one doesn't really need more than 2 or 3 fonts, so "online" memory use could be optimized even on low-end i think

@nprofile…j52q @nprofile…guq8 the i.MX8MQ can technically be made compatible with the Next (DSI->eDP adapter is still needed), but it's not a goal at the moment, because the number of people who would want that is very low, but then i'd have to do all the support work for that combination.
the MNT Reform shipped with MB 2.0, so you can use it in Station, no problem! MB 1.0 was more like a prototype.

@nprofile…j52q @nprofile…guq8 we're in the long-winded process of transitioning from the term motherboard to the term mainboard. the processor modules are generally compatible with all boards. older versions of mainboards are only interesting if you already have one of those, as we don't sell old versions. is there something more specific you want to know?

2026-08-21 10:53:09 GMT

@nprofile…j52q @nprofile…guq8 right. pocket mainboards fit in pocket reform. reform mainboards fit in reform and station.

OK, our little computer/server/NAS is online at Crowd Supply: https://www.crowdsupply.com/mnt-research/mnt-station
The main idea was to have a high-end enclosure for the classic MNT Reform mainboard to give it a second life, but you can as well build an open hardware computer from the parts.
We're also publishing 3D printable versions of the cases, and there will be more photos and use case details in upcoming campaign posts.

and you would think that this works: right click on a file in Recent and use "Open Item Location". but that right click quietly replaces the save-as filename with the name of the file you right clicked! bizarre! (at least in signal, not sure if that's happening in all apps)

2026-08-14 17:43:12 GMT

i think one of the biggest timewasters on the linux (gnome) desktop for me right now is that programs/the system has a hard time remembering previous "save as" folder locations. i desperately wish these last used folders would appear in "Recent" in the file picker, or in a new "Recent Locations" or sth... and no, the bookmarks/faves aren't good enough, because this quickly gets cluttered and has to be manually audited. also that doesn't work across UI toolkits...

finally trying out my glasgow (C3), connected it to the I2C port on a pocket mainboard and put the system controller (rp2040) in programming mode so it doesn't do anything. glasgow can then scan and find all the chips on the I2C bus on the board. not sure if it can peek/poke the registers also. would be cool to auto identify the chips.
