Hooking your raspberry pi up to an iPad with only a USB-C cable and having a fully fledged Linux dev box is pretty cool. It even powers itself off the iPad.
Can confirm it works and works well. Especially for web dev.

Set up my Aunt’s Samsung dryer recently. It had WiFi, and she thought the app was cool.
It immediately tried to update firmware, failed, and bricked her dryer.
Took me hours online and some guesswork to figure out how to force the thing to reset or whatever. I hate modernity.

Yeah idk what’s up. 18 runs good so far on my iPad Pro, but on my 15 Pro Max it started tripping balls. I woke up and nothing worked really. Had to force restart twice to even get apps to run.

Doing some research, it looks like it was created by the authors of Atom. A minimalist editor. (No tabs, no file tree)
Why not use NeoVim or eMacs? Why do all these tiny editors that add almost no value keep cropping up? It’s not an IDE. It’s an editor.

I’m not good at asking for help, but I am presently faced with a medical expense that I do not know how to pay at this point. I have been in constant pain for almost 20 years with bad teeth, and they have begun causing secondary health problems. Because of the structure of my teeth and bones, it will be a surgery to have them removed, and I’m liable to end up with holes where they were leading into my sinuses, etc. It’s doable, but it’s work for the surgeon, and they charge for that sort of thing.
The surgery looks like it will cost about $13,000, not counting the cost of dentures. Someone suggested I create a donation page on Nodeless, so here it is. There are countless people in worse situations, so I don’t really want to ask for anything. But if you feel like chipping a few sats to help out with this, every little bit helps.

C is a high level language. It is not close to the hardware is a large number of substantial ways. Memory is not flat, CPUs do not execute instructions linearly.
Embedded *can* be fun. We produce some embedded software. Not surprisingly, most people in embedded also use toolkits. The people building those toolkits are the real rockstars.

That there are way more developers than there are developers who actually understand how software works. That software has become an inverted pyramid growing ever smaller at the lower layers close to the hardware, and ever larger at the top.
This leads to system instability, poor performance, and a general stifling of innovation. Computers have not substantially changed in 50 years. It’s just layers upon layers of code, some of which very few people even understand anymore.

I’ve run every Microsoft OS since MS-DOS 6.22.
I think there is a tendency to idealize memories, to look back on them with rose tinted glasses. Windows 95 was one of the best versions of Windows *upon release* in my best attempt at remembering. Windows 98 was broken at release and wasn’t trustworthy until 98 SE.
Windows ME was arguably the worst version of Windows. It famously crashed during Bill Gates’ demo of it. I had the misfortune to run this 98 + Microsoft Plus abomination for over a year.
Windows 2000 Professional was stable, but slow as Christmas. It wasn’t really meant to be used by consumers, so that kinda makes sense.
Windows XP was a good bit faster, but had nightmares with drivers for any hardware released prior (owing to it being a new kernel) and struggled with stability until SP3 and 4.
Windows Vista introduced UAC which was almost universally hated. We still have it, so Microsoft won that one. It actually became fairly useable during its last SP.
Windows 7 was the last major upgrade to the Windows kernel to date. By far the most loved version of Windows, Microsoft focused on security and performance issues. UAC bugs were mostly fixed and the UI was cleaned up. I ran this one through its entire lifecycle and it was a clean OS.
Windows 8 was Windows 7 with an early attempt at making Microsoft relevant in the tablet space. I feel sorry for anyone who endured this. They managed to get everything wrong.
Windows 10 was Windows 7 with aero basically shut off and strangely ran faster on the same hardware very often than Windows 7 did. Gamers seem to love this OS as DirectX became really good around this period and the OS got cleaned up of a lot of bloat.
Windows 11 is Windows 7 with aero turned back on. It continues to unify the UI. Microsoft has mostly innovated on the UI level, and of course added telemetry and online services in the age of Chromebooks and cloud computing. Security has also been a focus, and it’s the first version of Windows I’ve ever been able to run for two years without a third party anti-virus and not had to reinstall.
Windows 12 is shaping up to be the first innovation in the underlying OS made since Windows 7. Indications are it will be an immutable operating system with atomic updates. I expect ARM support will be a primary focus. Microsoft may be late to that party however as ARM licensing has become a nightmare and MS’s primary partner for ARM (qualcomm) is now investing heavily in RISC-V.
Just my two cents on Windows history to add to the conversation. 🤣

I wouldn’t recommend picsur for scale. It also uses DB backend, and lacks some moderation tools. I used it because it provided a lot of really useful features, such as URL based image conversion. It would be perfect for a self hoster though.
If some of the proposals end up working the way you described in your other post, and have a standard API, then that’s great. It’s almost not “relay hosting the image” in that case though, it’s more like “relay+hosting” configuration.

There are some who propose common sense changes. I don’t believe things are past fixing, or that this is the best we can do. Other countries have had success with various models we could learn from.
A few ideas:
- reduce judges discretion in sentencing
- eliminate qualified immunity for cops
- reduce sentences for non violent crimes
- eliminate plea deals
- end private indictments
- raise evidentiary requirements for indictments
- reform bail to be affordable
- move to a rehabilitation model for incarceration instead of a retributive model
- ban the box for job applications and housing
Most of these are proven effective at reducing either crime or corruption somewhere in the world, but one side or another of the aisle here kills the idea every time. I’m far from “right wing” in many areas - crime is one where I’m much more sympathetic to progressive ideas.
Harsh punishments don’t seem to be a solution to me. It’s like chemo. Wouldn’t it be better to treat the cause?
Anyways, to your point, I didn’t like trump at all, but my opinion certainly isn’t swayed by this court system.

I also have a question and a couple of notes after trying coracle for a few days, if you don’t mind.
Are you using Gossip model relaying? Even after running for a while, and trying a refresh, coracle did not seem to use my relay list.
Of the relays that it used, half or more timed out nearly every time I posted. Watching the console in Dev Tools, it seemed the relays were down.
I agree on notifications. It’s a better flow to show how someone interacted, without having to click through to see how, since many interactions don’t require a response.
I want to say on the positive, I really like how coracle handles threads, and the modal pop over for displaying details, etc. Threads seem to be difficult to get right, and coracle seems to do a very good job of it.
