This reminds me of the old PBY Catalina, which really should be back in production, incidentally. They were retired in like 1952 but Canada kept using them effectively for forest fires until I think 2017, when the maintenance guy got too old and the parts/repair chain was wearing thin.

When I was living there a few years back I got the impression that various agencies are encouraging people to leave.
After the next big earthquake a lot of land will be cleared out for parks+large lots for the wealthy.
For example, cities from Long Beach to Malibu are on prime real estate but embody dilapidated infrastructure. Best to start over with 1-2 acre lots that won't risk a lot of lost life when earthquakes hit.
So I wasn't at all surprised when it turned out the recent fire-hit homes aren't being rebuilt.
I could be wrong but sure seems like they want everyone to move away [perhaps inland from] the Inglewood Fault, leaving big parcels behind with low population density. Might be nice, really, since the various towns were transformed into sh**land during World War 2.

We have enough resources here in the US we could probably liquidate our metal positions then dig for more. Maybe only the US, Russia, Japan, Philippines+countries with geological triple-plate junctions nearby can get away with this.

So, Philips 66 and friends are planning on bulldozing the refinery properties and developing the properties for commerce and probably residential. Solely because they consider the refineries to be a liability, whereas port development is seen as an asset.
So... California- why not just annex the entire regions by imminent domain? I don't see why not. Cut these guys off at the balls.
Or, conditionally allow them to keep the refineries and keep going. Gotta wonder what California's govt is doing. They have the upper hand.

When I was working I had this policy that women shouldn't be software engineers but if we were stuck with them they might as well be productive.
So this chinese chick in Canada nobody would help her get started so I sat down with her and taught her basic linux skills and how to have a little edge in her dev etc.
Was pretty fun all the girls in the office wanted to know me after that. The mgr was an Indian socialist w/ a british accent who hated the US so it also got her dictatorial nazi-like approval.
Was a fun year the GREAT thing was that I knew I could leave at any time. And I did.

Sometime around 1990 a friend of mine rented a flatbed truck we put 50+ band members in it and drove 15 miles to play an old folks home as well as other locales. Turned out it the old folks home was multistory so we played christmas carols from the giant flatbed truck.
They were quite happy some of the oldies were excited. Some old lady lots her mind and threw her dentures down at us. I was thinking... "well we can't really call the police can we!"
Same guy told me he could tow a Volvo 1800s I bought. I figured he'd rent something similar to the flatbed. Nope. He brought his Volvo 445 and a towstrap! Drove through Orange County I remember turning on the intersection of Beach and Ball and fearing for my life! As were the people around us they all looked extremely nervous.
Somehow, all turned out fine. No accidents, broken tow strap, tickets or late-night phone calls!

Yeah it's really deteriorated... at my first job I got to write awesome paint software, advanced printer drivers, early hi-res truecolor VGA drivers, etc.
Second job I got to write bit blit algorithms to speed up Broderbund's paint software + write awesome utilities there.
Third job I wrote NeXT software, which really taught me how software should work. Tho' software has regressed since then, requiring web browsers!
Fourth job was shitty but that's just the law of averages playing out.
Fifth job I worked for DIsney for awhile+sold my java VM to Motorola.
Since those days the industry has paled in ocmparison in terms of exciting products and options. Most of the problem is people giving software away for free (in a variety of forms) and big companies being really borish.
The industry has really slowed down a lot, steadily since around 2003. AI is big but only in the sense of making things worse. I do like what Commodore is trying to do, I get their point about the computer industry being poor + love their interest in trying to introduce fascinating products.
Hopefully what they're doing will catch on.

As an example tho' there have been no jobs in tech for three years now. So you have a situation where new classes of people who have worked every year of their life making good money have entered the food stamps program.
With the tech depression most of it is due to cloud computing becomes "the industry" and "the industry" being docileified and sent to India. In particular, one of Adam's obama-admin friends is behind the huge job export- have mentioned his name before.
We need more jobs and y'know... not necessarily just walmart greeter jobs, tho' I have nothing against those gigs they're like the old elevator girls who navigated you from floor to floor- roughly useless but y'know at least give them a broom and ask them to clean up our dirty Target stores or something!
