It absolutely should be up to the parents. Most of the issues we're seeing are due to parents who aren't engaged with their kids.
Governments, regardless of policy preference, are ill-equipped to fix that sort of fundamental problem.
From the government's perspective, they just need to roll something out that they can point at and say: "See, we've responded." That a list of other countries have already gone down this road gives them some cover.

That's fine, but polling finds a pile of public support.
"Seven in ten Canadians, 70%, support banning social media access for children under 16, including 44% who strongly support such a ban. Support for banning AI chatbots for children under 16 is nearly identical, at 69%, including 41% who strongly support it."

I worked with a German speaker from Switzerland. Good fellow, very diligent at his job.
We were out for a meal and drink at the end of a long week. I asked him the difference between German-Swiss and Germans from Germany.
"Oh, that's easy. We're Germans without the sense of humour."
I'm still not sure if he was serious or not.

I took a mandatory technical writing course for engineers and science majors. The first semester was as expected, no issues.
The professor couldn't teach the second semester, and a substitute was found. She decided we should read A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.
I had no prior experience with Joyce, read a few dozen pages and was left bewildered.
I wasn't the only one, and the next class deteriorated into a shouting match between the prof and the students. We wanted the curriculum and not whatever-the-hell this was.
She was replaced after a few more classes and the course returned to the mechanics of technical writing. I'm sure she was left with strong opinions of the heathens from the science and engineering faculties.
I still bristle at the mention of Joyce, and bear a small grudge against the Irish.

The condo board had a Discord channel, which was somewhat useful for sending messages to other owners or asking questions from the board.
Since I sold it, I've no use for it anymore.

Our connections have been dodgy today.
We have a lot of projects stored there and it's causing headaches.

Nothing will really be changed though. Outsourcing was so much cheaper than maintaining our own systems, apparently.

Stellantis is a basket case made up of smaller basket cases (PSA (itself made of Peugeot, Citroën, Opel/Vauxhall), FIAT and Chrysler)
After the formation in 2021/22, they took a bunch of underperforming companies with poor reputations and amalgamated them into a Voltron of Suck, and have been bleeding money and market share ever since.
Fiat is all but dead, again, in North America, Dodge and Chrysler are down to minivans and poorly received "full-sized" sedans/coupes, which have already required updates before even fully launching. Ram is soldiering along, while Jeep has suffered an increasing number of quality issues and has seen stagnating sales as their prices got far too ambitious.
I'm sure that the state governments will be throwing money their way to secure a plant, but I'm not so sure the company will survive long enough for the plant to make it to production.

Along a similar vein, I just recently picked up a new F150 Lightning EV.
It's larger than I need admittedly, but there were thousands in incentives available, making it cheaper than the Ioniq5 or ID4.
Twin motors give 450hp and 770ft-lbs torque, awd, four wheel independent suspension. It's got the standard range 98kWh battery, rated at 380km range, but realistically closer to 320kms. It's also got a huge comfortable cab and a "frunk" larger than most sedan's boots.
The MSRP was $75k CAN, roughly £40k before manufacturer's incentives.
So far, I'm very happy with it. I had kept my Touareg TDI "just in case", but I'll be selling it now.

NATO 5.56mm is effective out to about +/-500m, depending on the exact rifle used.
We used to practice out to 400m with the C7 with scope (Colt Canada version of the AR-15).
Kind of wonder if the shooter was aiming for centre of mass or a head-shot and Kirk just happened to move enough to get hit in the neck.
Had to have been a fair bit of luck to hit where it did. Pretty much took out the jugular. Not gonna walk away from that.

This was the most common pickup back int he 1980s. Three-across seating and an 8' (2.4M) long bed. It was designed around hauling dimensional lumber and building materials. The bulk of them were bought by tradesman, farmers and the like.
The most common pickups now have enormous cabs with seating for 5 or 6, and tiny beds (5.5' (1.7m) being common), more suitable for hauling a few bikes or bags of black earth. A huge number are now bought by suburbanites and used for little to nothing more adventurous than commuting.

The Chalco, Tepanec, Tlacopan, Texcoco, Culhuacan, and Chichimec would find this assertion amusing, had they survived.
The Conquistadors ended up defeating the Aztecs, but it was hardly all sunshine and flowers before their arrival.
And then there's what is now China. Its history is epically filled with expansion, contraction, rebellion and internecine warfare, long before the west had any influence outside of their region.
Wherever there are populations, there has been conflict, conquest and rebellion. "Westerners" are only the most recent examples.

There was one utility I worked with that maintained all of their transmission and distribution logic as hard wired discreet logic.
Need to change breaker closing sequence? An electrician would be dispatched to the switchyard to physically re-wire the logic.
Their SCADA was for monitoring only, and completely segregated from the internet.
At the time I thought it was really odd and old fashioned. Now, I'm convinced they had the right idea.

Tuition in my last year of university (1990) was ~$1200, and minimum wage was $5/hr, that's roughly $2500 and $10/hr in today's money.
I had a part time job in high school and full time in the summer loading trucks, which paid $10/hr.
I had about $10k saved up to start university, so had no debt upon graduation.
The kids now are getting a raw deal. My youngest is going to be starting 4th year in the fall, and her tuition and fees will top $8k.
I can't find it now, but I did see one report on the explosion in the amount of administration staff and pay packets of senior staffers that had happened since the 1990s. I have no way of verifying that.
I do know that federal and provincial support has tapered off a great deal. That lead to the over-reliance on high fees for foreign students to make up the difference.

I was wondering about the relative cost of EV and gas cars back in the day.
It appears a 1911 Baker Electric ran about $860 (~$29k in today's money) compared to $780 ($25k) for a 1912 Ford Model T.
But the Model T's price dropped over time as Ford optimized their production line. By the end of its production run in 1927, it cost about $260 ($4800).

German auto brands have been using structural adhesives for something like 30 years.
Instead of using dozens of pinch welds, they'll use adhesives and a few select weld points to maintain the shape while the adhesives cure.
This was especially important when working with aluminum body structures that Audi helped pioneer for mass market use.
Fenders are still typically bolted on and not structural. Of course doors, trunk and hood are bolted hinges to allow for adjustment.
The only ladder style frames Ford use currently are in the pickups and pickup based large SUVs. It's the same at GM.
Ford has been using unibodies since the 1950s, on and off. The 1958 Continental below was an early unibody Ford product. At 5.8m long, 2m wide, 1.4m tall and weighing in at 2.5tonnes, it was an engineering challenge to be sure.

Kyle Connor has a bunch of EV based YouTube Channels, and is known for his technical deep-dives.
He's generally been positive on Tesla vehicles. He tries to avoid the political stuff. It's not as easy as it used to be.
His personal Cybertruck has had a number of faults only some addressed by recalls/OTA updates.
The latest incident involved the complete failure of one of the inverters/drive motors, apparently a known issue on tri-motor CTs.
And yesterday it bricked itself completely while parked in his garage.

About twenty years ago, I was sitting in the living room and I heard car doors, then a car speeding away.
My neighbour across the street called, had seen someone drop off a box on my front step and sped off. It seemed sketchy to her. This was long before Amazon deliveries.
The box had 5 kittens in it. I brought them over to a shelter, and they were checked over, found to be healthy and adopted out in short order. They seemed to be part Persian or some such. Very fluffy.

My current boss is about half my age (so Millenial, I guess?), an absolutely excellent engineer, very well organised, and has excellent communications skills.
Her best skill as far as leadership is that she assigns tasks directly though diplomatically. You know exactly what needs to be done, for who, where the information is, and what the deadlines are.
In the event of disagreement, she will hear the other side out, but will make the call, and we know that that is the end of the discussion. It never gets personal, no grudges, no retribution.
I lover her to bits. One of the best bosses I've had.

Wealth taxes are ridiculously difficult to implement and carry very high administration costs, for limited returns.
That leaves income and capital gains taxes, both of which have changed over the last number of years.
Which other Western governments would Trudeau work with? Macron? Scholz? Sunak? Biden? They're up to their eyeballs with their own problems, even if they had the motivation to do so.
Whatever their intention in the past, right now, they're voting for the CPC. As disastrous as Harper was, PP will be much worse.

Taxes have gone up at the top. This latest change is a 25% increase in the minimum alternative tax. That is a big deal.
Class disparity is a global issue. The fluidity of capital makes it a difficult problem to deal with.
France failed at going after the rich, and had to back down.
The bulk of taxpayers are in the middle class. That's where tax revenue will always come from.
If voters wanted an NDP government, they would have voted for one. As it is, even the modest changes that the Liberals have made may have been too much, as the CPC is in ascendency.

They've eliminated some tax deductions for short term rental property owners, increased CPP payments from employees and employers, extended tax deductions to cover therapy, and increased the minimum alternative tax from 15% to 20% on those earning over $173k/yr.
None of that is going to make the rich, richer.
