@npub17ut…rzd9 I was thinking that, because #ComissionerJohansson and other proponents doesn’t care if we change fundamental principles such as the presumption of innocence, maybe they do care if we start to to accidentally leak information to the enemy? I am not sure this will work, maybe they are indirectly payed off by Putin and his cronies. In fact, it would be ironically funny if we just assume that without evidence until we have seen their entire chat history. 🤷‍♂️

@npub1hpc…hjn3 and probably worse is that the discussion is predominantly in Dutch, excluding the people whose work life is going to be impacted when they are forced out from teaching. People who are suggesting to go all Dutch in education also seem to forget that the main purpose of universities is research, not teaching. But fine, let’s leave the students without teachers…

Discussions have started about the use of the English language in higher education in the Netherlands. Started with some statements by the educational minister and then by Omtzigt’s new party. The discussion seem to center that it is difficult to study in another language, and there are too many internationals in the NL. Disgusting is the first word of it, but let’s look at some points.
- Higher education has always been international. Earlier we used Latin, be happy it is English today.
- Academia is a very international profession, research is often so specialised that it is done in English out of necessity. That means recruitment and hiring is done from a pool of internationals.
- Academics are recruited internationally and are expected to teach as well. As it is impractical to teach in the local language before one has learned it, classes will be in English.
- The success of programmes such as Erasmus depends on classes being given in English.
- Some say “let’s just give bachelors” in Dutch, but BSc level courses are given by the same people giving MSc level courses… 🤷‍♂️
- The use of English in higher education means that European universities have a chance. Forcing universities to go all Dutch / German / Swedish / etc is a good way to guarantee American and British academic dominance, because that is where the talent pool can go.
- International kids raised in English also need to go to university.
- Some say that in the Netherlands we speak Dutch, but they forget the other languages in the Netherlands, which includes Frisian, Limburgish, Dutch Low Saxon, Papiamento and English. How many countries in Europe are fully monolingual anyway?
