Since iOS 18 has a lot of “how did that take 18 releases”, I’ll throw an api quark that has driven me nuts since the first SDK: UIViewController.dismiss behaves differently based on the state of presentation. It dismisses self if it doesn’t have a presented VC, but if it does it dismisses that VC. And if it is *currently* dismissing a presented VC, presentedViewController will be non nil but it will dismiss self.
This api is bad and should be replaced. And it should have been 10 years ago.

I know Apple has really strict policies on just in time compiling, but does that extend to all compiling? Could you ship something like Arduino IDE to the App Store where the code is compiled on device but then run by uploading over a serial bus to a microcontroller?

Passkeys are amazing and I love the idea of a password-less future (more for others than myself, but I'll take it too). However, I'm a little hesitant to lean on them because when my password manager (regardless of which one) fails to autofill a password, I can always copy and paste or even manually type it in. When passkeys go wrong, what's the backup?
For instance Safari apps don't support plugins. How do you use a passkey in that situation?

Xcode didn’t get a new source/text based project format but the new build able folders feature (where the project file just references a folder instead of every file specifically) is a big step in that direction and in some ways the most valuable step.

I’m not seeing a lot of discussion on this, and maybe it’s not new, but this sounds like it could be a big improvement to Mac mirroring? Having foveation performed on the Mac before sending the output to the headset should mean better quality overall in addition to the higher resolution.

I really wish this wasn’t possible on the Mac. I love the fact that deleting an app from iOS means it’s completely gone.
The macOS sandbox can be incredibly frustrating. The iOS app model is incredibly restrictive. But there hasn’t been any attempt to bridge that gap since the macOS sandbox was released in 2007.

I hate that I’m absolutely part of this problem. My bookshelf is full of impulse purchases that I will never read.
But also, as I have started reading again, a lot of books are just bad. Other times they will have like 3 blog posts worth of gold content and the rest feels like the author was just trying to hit a minimum page count.

I’m sure that’s driven in large part by the fact that people are reading less and most book sales are to people who put them on their shelf and never actually read them.
But the more mediocre books that are published, the more peoples experience of reading is sub par, the less people are going to be interested in reading.

These days book publishers only want books written by people who already have an audience so they can rely on them to market the book. Which means a YouTuber who is a mediocre writer is much more likely to get a book deal than an excellent author who is only dedicated to writing books.

I would pay so much for a tv with a half decent display and absolutely no smarts. Just listen for the CEC commands from the Apple TV to turn off and on and nothing else.

Literally right after I posted this my daughter asked me to print some coloring sheets for her. Normally I'd grab my mac but figured I give the iPad a shot.
Safari freezes when I tap the share button to print. iPad OS (an a lot of Apple's software these days) doesn't need to change. It needs to work.

I think the reason the current round of “AI” (LLM, generative tools) makes me so uncomfortable is that I’ve had a growing frustration with software for years focused on the fact that it has gotten so unpredictable and unreliable. AI only makes that worse.

Combine was added 5 years ago and has had very few changes since then and doesn’t really fit in with strict concurrency checking and now with Observable there aren’t a lot of required uses for it from Apple’s frameworks.
But I kind of hope we see some evolution of it at WWDC. While async/await is much better for tasks, Combine is still better for data flow. It would be amazing to see a solution that bridges these 2 together.

I saw a cardiologist today because I’ve gotten a couple high heart rate warnings in my watch.
I showed the doc the warnings in the health app and he asked if he could look through the data. Pulled all kind of stuff. Said it was better data than anything they get with the device they send home with patients. I have never felt so vindicated as a tech nerd.

The iPad makes Apple about as much money as the Mac does and sells more than twice the number of units. I'm pretty sure in Apple's opinion, there is no problem with the iPad.
I fail to see why I would want to run Xcode on my iPad. I don't use my iPad for a lot, but when I do I don't feel like it can't do anything I want it to.

I do hate chrome only websites (or worse, websites that don’t know their chrome only) but flash was worse.

But you wouldn't be able to give it the same interface as the builtin components.

This probably sounds like I'm pretty grumpy with SwiftUI, but I do think it's a big improvement over what came before it. I would not want to write a new app in UIKit and I am optimistic about the future. I don't think any of these limitations are inherent to declarative UIs.

Overall, SwiftUI feels like its creators are terrified of backwards compatibility. Like if they exposed the internal structure of Font (which is more complicated than UI/NS/CFFont) that would lock them into that API contract.
And to be fair, there are no good solutions for this problem, and it is an industry wide problem. Whether it's a programming language or library, we don't have a good way to evolve without breaking or reinventing.

The #1 thing I want from SwiftUI is more access to the internals. I should be able to recreate a feature for feature TextField or whatever. But so much of SwiftUI's internals are private. You can't access the value of a Color or Font. Many types have private initializers. And the internal workings are still a closely guarded secret.
That's not how AppKit or UIKit ever were.

For instance, if you want to build an “advanced" text field (like with attributed text) you can drop down to UIKit, but then you lose FocusState and a bunch of other integrations. Now your 1 field that has to be UIKit has to be configured and controlled in a completely different way than all your other fields.

I'd be ok with accepting that SwiftUI is a convenience layer on top of AppKit/UIKit (in the same way that UIKit has always been a layer on top of CoreAnimation and both are built on top of CoreGraphics) but dropping down to those layers is still a huge pain.

The Subprocess proposal (Swift native replacement for Foundation Process/NSTask) seems interesting. Process has always been a frustrating API to use (just see how often it gets wrapped in a simpler helper).
Very cool to see how Foundation is getting modernized, and even better that it's happening in the open.

Mergeable libraries (introduced at wwdc last year) seems like it could be really useful. But also seems like support is missing from SPM. I wish we could get away from resolving dependencies using source code.

What ever happened to Swift package registry? GitHub said they would add support but never did. I’ve seen a few services add support like AWS. But no one seems to have adopted it. I would expect someone like Google and especially Apple to start publishing their packages on a registry but everything is still using git.

That led to getting a Lightning last year and it is pretty amazing. Fits all 3 of our kids with plenty of room. When we drive down to our parents, we can take all the stuff without spending half an hour playing Tetris.
And yes, I do actually use the truck bed for plywood an whatnot pretty regularly. And being able to lay a 4x8 sheet flat is so convenient.
