With Twitter being a nazi bar, all Meta products shifting toward uplifting disinfo and fascists, and Bluesky leaving most moderation of harmful content in the hands of the users and allowing ki.wifarms types to exist on their platform (for who knows how long at this point?)

I’m seeing murmurs that people, at least some people, are becoming fed up with the low amount to entire lack of moderation on Bluesky. That the team behind the app sort of leaves it mostly in the hands of the users to construct block and mute lists (which comes with accountability issues all on its own). But, one would only have to take a gander at the current Bluesky search results for Jesse Singal’s account on the app, to see where some of this frustration might be coming from.

Back in the day, we’ll say 2017? I think, or I’m pretty sure that’s when I first joined Mastodon. It was back on my mastodon.social days, because, well, I’m not sure there were as many privately run instances, and this was before I launched a GNU Social instance (wish I would’ve found a way to keep it, would be awesome to still have it). But one of the first things that caught my attention wasn’t really the UI, or the diversity of people and ideas on my timeline as I gradually followed those I was interested in seeing. It was, in fact, the federated timeline that kept me captivated.

Much to probably nobody’s surprise, I am very indecisive, and I can’t figure out what I want to do. In my ActivityPub distro-hopping adventures, I’ve installed Mastodon onto a VPS, and switched back. Not because Sharkey is bad, or not to my liking. It’s great! But I can’t keep myself away from the Mastodon software. Even if Sharkey has some advantages over it.

I feel like I’ve explored this topic before, but it keeps coming up on my timeline. Specifically, on the timeline of my Bluesky alt account that I’ve got setup for the off-chance, or the just-in-case situation, where I can no longer exist on my personal Mastodon instance (I love my instance so much, that losing it would be heartbreaking to me, and I don’t know if I would want to move to a new instance after all this time). What keeps coming up on the timeline? People expressing, or better yet, complaining about what they feel is wrong with Mastodon. So, let’s explore a little more.

To this day, over a year since I launched an instance (before I moved over to managed hosting), people are launching new instances RIGHT NOW, and they're running into the directory permissions issue, i.e., wherein you need to do this in order for your instance to literaly function:

Over the past year, since I’ve started writing much more heavily online, and established a website (despite said website changing at least five times), I’ve written about quite a few controversies. Like how Microsoft is developing AI-fueled spyware, Reddit is copy/pasting Musk’s behavior in their structural decision making, Bluesky is partnering with a company that utilizes OpenAI, and Threads’ new public policy director is an entire fascist. There’s just one problem with all of this, and it’s not only a problem you see with corporations and billionaires, but something that’s been happening more and more as we inch closer to the middle of the 2020s.

I’ve been lurking the Melonland forums, and searching around websites people have built, and one of the main complaints, or issues I see, is people are using Gifcities to kind of “gamble” their way into finding actual cool gifs, blinkers, badges, and banners. And, while this might be effective sometimes, I’d like to direct people interested in collecting old-net artifacts, or those who’d just like a little bit of nostalgia, to Restoritaveland. This comes complete with Geocities neighborhood navigation, and although I don’t think it has every site ever made on Geocities … it’s possible, you might just find something you’ve made, if you’re as old as me.

You know, aside from those times I launched a GNU Social instance, and then a very short-lived Pleroma instance. GNU Social is a lot like if someone made an open source Facebook, and Pleroma is okay, but it was originally made by a terrible person (not that this should stop you from doing whatever you want, with your time, and servers).
