@nprofile…l54j hi there! Are there any plans to fix "Recent activity" on starting page? It stopped working with the release of 6.7, and it's a really nice addition, that should be there. Or if it's removed intentionally, the toggle to enable it should be deleted from the settings.

@nprofile…dj2e got it! Well, that's why I want to try Void. "Stable rolling" is kind of appealing (that's why I'm on Solus currently).
I don't mind waiting if it means good testing of the packages

@nprofile…dj2e oh, nice to know that!
Out of curiosity - why the long wait? Were there some problems in regards to systemd reliance, or it normally takes a bit longer to update DEs in Void.
Asking, because I have never seriously used Void for longer, so no idea how the pase of updates looks like.

2026-08-03 06:25:27 GMT

Spent about 2 hours switching my laptop to #voidlinux only.to discover, it is currently on the one single version of KDE, that flashbangs you when you snap windows (6.6.3)
Wanted to switch my PC today, but I guess I'll wait until they move to 6.7

@nprofile…z6pq English is not my native language, so I never thought about this as insulting. I mean, we're half the world away, it's only natural, that you don't really understand or grasp some concepts, that are normal here, same as I don't fully catch all the stuff that's common knowledge in the US. So sometimes, it needs explaining "to make it easier to understand". But this I think is mostly language thing, and how English is different than for example Polish

2026-06-29 17:15:04 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…z6pq for example, some time ago I was explaining to some Americans how is it possible, that in Poland Nintendo was practically non-existent up until Switch released, Halo is not "the game", and when in the US Doom shareware was shared over the network when it was released, meanwhile in Poland we were buying it on flea market from shady Russians. Because "what do you mean Internet only started becoming a thing in Poland in 2004-2005", and "our most popular console in 2000 was a NES clone"

2026-06-29 17:10:25 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…z6pq to be fair, sometimes when I talk to Americans they (not intentionally) get trapped in "US is the center of the world" mindset, and anything gets compared to US, even if it's unwarranted. Again - more often than not it's not intentional, but it means often you have to start from the absolute basics, that will sort of put them in the shoes of person outside the US.

@nprofile…ynd9 Just out of sheer curiosity - where you're from Nintendo was a big deal?
In Poland we literally never had Nintendo. Only in the 90s we had a Polish licensed NES clone called Pegasus, but it was a luxury item not many could afford. Apart from that, Nintendo never had any presence here. Before Switch was released I really saw a Nintendo console in person like once - in highschool when my friend's father brought him DS from his US work trip. Poland was always a PC land

@nprofile…l0vd @nprofile…eew3 I literally have no idea what you're trying to show with this link, since you didn't even bother to elaborate. If you want to have a meaningful discussion about the dangers of AI and the potential benefits it can bring, it's in good manner to state your opinions, and not link to a random Mastodon post.
Or you can just stay in your sieged fortress, scream at the top of your lungs "AI BAD", while still using predictive AI algorithms every time you stop at a red light :)

@nprofile…l0vd @nprofile…eew3 I'm far from hating AI as a concept. Truth be told, AI (or rather ML) was with us for decades behind the scenes, and helped immensly in pushing technology and knowledge forwards. AI is not bad as a *concept*. I can see several good uses for it. The issue is in how it's implemented currently. Yes, gigantic general purpose LLMs that consume equivalent of a small country in electricity to answer a single question is turbo cancer. Small, local, isolated, specialized models are not

2026-06-09 09:05:08 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…eew3 I mean their approach is... reasonable. I don't support Linux Desktop being agentic OS, but a small, isolated, local AI model is a way better approach than a gigantic, remote model run on huge-ass datacenter, that has root access to your system.

@nprofile…mr5c yeah, I meant the Software Center, or whatever they call it now. It's absolutely awful, the worst software management software there is...
For Flatpak I really recommend https://flathub.org/en/apps/io.github.kolunmi.Bazaar
It's a project from the Bazzite developers and it's MILES better at its job than GNOME Software. It's Flatpak only

2026-05-15 07:49:36 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…mr5c well, the solution is simple - just remove GNOME Software and update with dnf update. By default dnf does online (in-place) updates, so no need to reboot. Problem solved. And if you want a good software store for Flatpak, Bazaar is great

2026-05-15 07:44:14 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…mr5c if GNOME Software automatically downloaded and staged some update in the background (which it likes to do, even if automatic updates are off), it won't show either in GS updates page or in dnf update - since it's already downloaded and staged for installation.
On the battery draining - do you see the giant checkbox, saying it will reboot and install updates? You are informed about it, so if you chuck it in the bag, it's your fault. Just type in the FDE password. Or uncheck the box

2026-05-15 07:37:52 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…mr5c this update system is the smartest one in Linux. You don't want to replace binaries in-place while the system is running. You want to shut down, replace all the files that are updated, and power on
The issue you're describing is not with Fedora, but with GNOME Software, which is and always has been absolutely awful, not showing half of the updates, or updating only some packages, while skipping some, sometimes installing updates unprompted. Just remove GNOME Software and use terminal

2026-05-15 07:32:15 GMT

@nprofile…h0km well, me too when I was starting my Linux journey. I wanted new and shiny, that's why I rocked Arch for almost 2 years, then Fedora for 3 years.
Now 10 years in, this desire for newest versions and all new and shiny has worn off, got burned by many unexpected breakages, because someone shipped untested/broken version.
Now I just want my PC to work. Nothing less, nothing more. When I power it on in the morning, I expect it to work flawlessly until I shut it down.

2026-05-06 18:59:02 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…h0km Kubuntu is (as far as I know) the only distro providing close-to-LTS level of stability with releases every half a year with package version freeze in between releases. It's a perfect middle ground between real LTS with releases every 2 years, and something like Fedora or Arch, where new versions are being shipped as soon as they are released

2026-05-06 18:55:51 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…h0km Stability. I don't want a system that's being updated every hour with every new version of every package. I want a system that I install, configure, and am 100% done with it for the next couple of months. Minor security fixes, that are applied automatically and Flatpak updates, nothing more. If nothing changes, nothing breaks.
That's why I'm currently rocking Debian. Ultimate stability

@nprofile…lrrw damned character limits. Some examples:
- Higgs Boson - discovered thanks to ML algorithms analyzing petabytes of collision data, looking for anomalies
- Kepler Space Telescope - ML used to analyze patterns in light pulses in the sky to find distant stars
- FaceID - also uses Machine Learning
- Predicting natural disasters by feeding satellite imagery and weather data into ML alghorithms
I much rather have an ML decide what's valid target, than a crazy orange psycho with God complex

@nprofile…lrrw oh, so ML is the issue?
Well, it's time for you to think for like 5 seconds about your argument. They're not plugging ChatGPT into an ICBM.
It's supposed to be a system, that takes an amount of data that's incomprehenisible by a human, process it through custom analytics model and spit out facts - is that a valid military target or not. Without bias, without reasoning. Analytics and facts.
Machine learning has been used for DECADES for data analysis. IT's one thing it's good at

@nprofile…lrrw no, I'm genuine. Generally if you see a problem with some actions, it's in good spirit to explain why this is a problem for you.
I for once don't see an issue with a for-profit company taking on a government contract for developing a military system. This is normal, just like Ford, Boeing or Apple doing stuff for the military. May I remind you, that the thing you're using now, the Internet, was also only for military use in the beginning?

@nprofile…mgsr yeah, I have a laptop and a PC, and with PC I'm stuck with this weird dual-disk setup until NVMe comes back down in pricing (hopefully some day). Up until now the only distros that allow me to actually configure my drives are Void, Arch and funnily enough Debian (I guess it really is "the universal OS")

2026-04-16 15:16:43 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…mgsr they use Calamares (which in theory supports LVM striping, but in practice has a bug that crashes the whole process when you select multiple PVs, and this bug has been reported in 2016). Nah, now I'm just rambling.

2026-04-16 14:43:55 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…mgsr yes, but this creates a linear RAID0. Which means drives are filled up one after the other, which in turn means as you approach the middlepoint of the combined space, your drive behaves like a mostly-full SSD, slowing down and having issues indexing the files. Then when you cross it and go to the other drive, it speeds up, since it's filling the second, empty drive.
And since my normal operation is around 950 GB, this means I always live in the "slow region"

2026-04-16 14:41:04 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…mgsr sadly - striped LVs don't show up. I just see two separate, partitions, instead of a single, large 2 TB one

2026-04-16 14:36:40 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…mgsr man, 26.04 looks tempting, but there's one reason I simply can't switch to Ubuntu. And that is - lack of installation on pre-existing partition layout. I have to use LVM Striped RAID, and I simply cannot do that on Ubuntu. Debian - no problem, just use expert install. Same with LMDE. But Ubuntu and any Ubuntu-based distro is a hard no in this regard.

Oh wait, it's even more stupid. It sends the whole content of the textbox after every keystroke. So with each letter typed the request payload grows larger and larger. So with longer comments or posts EACH REQUEST is like 200-300 B. It sends 200 B every keystroke. So with average 40 WMP it's 200 letters per minute, so it's 40 kB/minute from every user.

2026-04-16 11:13:27 GMT

I may be stupid but...
Can someone explain to me, what's the reasoning behind Reddit sending EVERY KEYSTROKE in a comment as a separate API POST request, instead of waiting until you clikc "Send" and send the whole text at once?
This approach results in 200 ms input lag when typing, which is super annoying and distracting

So I've been looking for an alternative for #Google #Drive to host on my server. Very minimal requirements - only file storage, #WebDAV support, #Collabora integration (need mobile editor, and not going to pay OnlyOffice a single penny).
#Filebrowser #Quantum was closest, but (for now) it only supports OnlyOffice. Was also impressed by #GroupOffice, but the UI is very clunky and did not get "wife approval mark"
Finally landed on Sync-In. Fits all my needs perfectly!

@nprofile…ynd9 hi there!
Afaik, the toot character limit on Mastodon is set on the instance level. Would it be possible to increase this limit on Fosstodon?
It's kinda annoying, trying to fit a meaningfull and elaborated discussion in 500 characters, especially since this has to also account for handles, hashtags and trigger warnings. As a result with longer threads you're often left with like 200 characters for the actual toot 😅
For example now I have only 24 characters left

No. It did not. The only thing that was added was an OPTIONAL, EMPTY BY DEFAULT field in the userDB. To accompany fields called "Name", "Surname" and "Location". Want to fill it? Fill it. Don't want to fill it? Don't fill it. Or lie about it. Fuck cares. It's an OPTIONAL COLUMN IN YOUR LOCAL DATABASE. NOTHING MORE.
If or when distros start requiring you to fill your DoB - go ahead, be offended, go with pitchforks and boycott the distros.

So apparently the Federation is not a great fan of multiple layers of proxy on top of tunneling... Resulting in my homelab Synapse instance constantly getting defederated, connection silently failing, and generally not a great experience.
So had to go back to VPS. At least I saved some money by switching to IPv6 fully and utilizing NAT64 to federate.
Maybe I'll give homelab Synapse another go in the future.

I self-host my Matrix instance, have some encrypted rooms there, chat with people from other instances. Works fine.
But Hetzner just raised the prices, and my backups are getting bigger and bigger. It's now 8 Euro / month, and if the backups keep growing at this rate, by the end of the year it could be 10-12 Euro / month.
What do I do... Suck it up, or just switch to public instance...

@nprofile…zl9s as a sysadmin, I can see the benefits of Snap. There are not many, but they are there. If they want to use Snaps - fine. But make them acutally usable and not a buggy mess. That way people start publishing Snap versions of their software, they will become more popular and there you have 3 out of 4 problems solved. May I remind you, that Flatpaks were also hot garbage once

2026-02-10 19:13:48 GMT

@nprofile…zl9s I would argue, that it's more beneficial to REALLY focus on improving Snaps and including more software there. I mean AFAIK devs don't publish on Snaps bcs:
1. There's NO documentation
2. Snaps are really unpopular
3. Snap very restrictive permission system makes apps break a lot
4. Store backend is proprietary (cardinal sin)
If Canonical just focused their development on fixing those issues Snaps would have as big repo as Flatpak. And you can totally live off Flatpak alone rn

@nprofile…ax8r @nprofile…x5p2 at first I was at awe with customization, I was chasing the most "gamery" and "edgy" distros. Then again bleeding-edge. Then again stability and immutable. I was just trying to find something that will fit me perfectly and won't annoy me.
And this is when I found Mint, and then LMDE!

My company has been avoiding questions about extending my contract for a month now (the contract ends at the end of February), and yesterday posted job listings for my position...
I guess I'm looking for a new job now...? Anyone looking for a sysadmin with 4.5 years of experience?

It's funny how force of habit works...
I was using #Firefox for YEARS, only to switch to @nprofile…l54j when the Firefox drama started a year ago. Was perfectly happy with WF, up until version 6.6, which bumped base from ESR 125 to ESR 140, and introduced a very annoying bug with HTML5 video players.
So I started looking for other browsers and landed on #Vivaldi.
And it was great! Truly awesome! But it always felt a bit... wrong. I felt out of place, not "at home".
So back to #Waterfox I guess 🤷‍♂️

@nprofile…5cym just as I thought... At this point I'm super happy that in Poland we have mObywatel and eDO. I mentioned them in my post - official, governmental applications, where you confirm your age either by scanning a QR code, or NFC-tapping your ID card to your phone. Then the gov system just provides the service with only the DoB, verified and authorized by government. No photos, no AI, no scans, no third-party companies

2026-01-12 09:19:15 GMT

I've always thought, that Poland is behind when it comes to tech. But the recent age verification laws showed me, that it's quite the opposite.
mObywatel and eDO App are the official, government applications. With these we can safely and securely confirm our age, either by just scanning a QR code, which will authorize governmental system to send very selected and verified data about us (eg. DoB) or just use NFC to scan my actual ID.
No photos, no third-party

@nprofile…5cym out of sheer curiosity - how this "age verification" is handled there? Similarly to eg. UK, where you send a picture of your ID card to some outsourced company, or do you have some official system?

@nprofile…pyrh And a bonus - recently I had to restore backup of my laptop (silly config mistake, restoring backup was quicker than actually fixing the issue), and the last one I had was from August, so good 4 months.
After I restored the backup, guess how many updates were waiting for me (not counting Flatpaks).
Seven!
Meanwhile the Fedora ISO from September has over 1000 updates pending right after the installation.

@nprofile…pyrh I think it's funny, that I started my Linux journey about 10 years ago with Arch and its many derivatives (Manjaro, Endeavor), then switched to Fedora for a few years, looking for something more stable. And since I started using Mint, almost 4 years ago I can't even go back to Fedora, let alone Arch...

@nprofile…v2sm @nprofile…rnm4 @nprofile…sjdl this may be your MOBO keeping power on for certain things - for me it was never turning off the keyboard and speakers.
Go into you BIOS and look for "Erp Ready" - this is an option required by the EU to shut off power to external things completely (for power saving)

@nprofile…pyrh from my own experience - moving away from Mint (LMDE in my case) to anything else just feels... wrong.
Sure, you get bored of Mint, because it just works, doesn't get in your way and simply exists. The moment you switch to anything even a tad less stable - in my case it was Fedora KDE - you feel uneasy and sort of like an intruder. There's always this anxiety every time you see KDE notification pop up - what crashed this time.
And what's funny - before Mint I was Fedora KDE user!

One issue I have with it - you can adjust the back position up/down, to adjust the position of lumbar support. It's a simple ratchet, that allows sliding up, and locks when trying to slide down until you reach topmost position, then you can slide it all the way down.
Often when I stand up I slide it by accident all the way up, and when sitting again I slide it all the way down and have to readjust. But I think this is a matter of getting used to standing up properly.

Got myself a new office chair and I'm blown away by it. I didn't realize an office chair can be this customizable and comfortable!
I went to the store prepared to spend 1000-1500 PLN (270 - 410 USD). Tried a few chairs, but when I sat on Grospol Ergohuman 2 Elite (which was recommended to me by dozens of people) I knew I have to swallow the pill and whip out 3000 PLN (830 USD) on it.
It's just unbelievable, how good it is. High quality, super comfy. Worth the price!

@nprofile…u2kk well, Discover is also not very good, but way better than GNOME Software. Nonetheless, you should always use terminal for system updates - just to be sure it does what you want it to do.
Unless you're on Mint. Their Update Manager is just stellar.

@nprofile…u2kk that's more GNOME issue than Fedora... GNOME Software is really bad and in my opinion shouldn't be used, unless you want situations like this.
For system updates - terminal.
For Flatpaks - Bazaar

@nprofile…h7c0 first of all - a STRONG stance on AI. Vivaldi doesn't and won't have AI, period. A browser is for browsing
Second - despite being Chromium, they kinda-sorta support a soft fork of MV2, so uBlock Origin works fully (inbuilt adblock on desktop sucks, on mobile it's stellar)
Third - super customizable, so I made it match my Mint theme in terms of colors
Fourth - sync actually syncs everything
And yeah, UI is closed source (I don't like, but get the reasoning), but I just bit the bullet

@nprofile…lyed @nprofile…gn92 Yeah I guess, but that adds another layer of maintenance. I want my system to *just work*, no fluffing around or manually pulling repos/building software. That's why I try to keep my DE as stock as possible. Sometimes this is not possible.
But I guess not all is lost, I have a reason to keep using Cinnamenu, which has some nice features compared to stock menu (like calculator function and emoji picker in search bar)

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
My worst fear realized...
@nprofile…gn92 team, despite DOZENS AND DOZENS reports and requests and EVERYTHING decided, that they will go the KDE Plasma way with their redesigned menu
Meaning if you have menu icon placed in the CENTER SECTION OF THE PANEL, the menu opens CENTERED ON THE BUTTON, and not ON THE SCREEN/PANEL
What this means - the position of the menu CHANGES depending on how many apps you have pinned/opened.
WHY...

@nprofile…3zjw oh noooo... Okay, I understand now. Nah, Eternal is just abyssmal on pad (I played it on SteamDeck, or at least tried). Yeah, I agree, you can't fully utilize the advanced movement when you use a gamepad. But I really encourage you to try this with M+K (I think PS5 supports that?). It's a different game. Example:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUqdmzJBFIM
Marauder, "the hardest enemy in the game", the one that was dreadded by journalists. When you learn the game, it's like "seeing numbers" in Matrix :D

@nprofile…3zjw Yeah, the platforming in Eternal was... It was there. I never liked it, but on the flip side, enchanced movement and jumping made this into way more fun shooter, where you have a lot of ways to position yourself, move quickly and eliminate the most threatening targets (although you can only fully appreciate that on higher difficulties). Resources are also scarce in Eternal (HP, shield, ammo), but you're encouraged to move fast, use tools at your disposal and adapt.

@nprofile…3zjw the fact, that everyone seems to even forget the title of the new Doom speaks volumes...
But I knew it will be like that the moment I saw, that 70% of the people working on Eternal left the studio when work on Dark Ages started. Then the first trailer dropped and I was like "Yeaaaaah no".
I'm a Doom psychofan. I've finished Eternal close to 10 times. Doom II close to 100 times. I haven't even finished 2nd mission of Dark Ages.
Shame... Well, at least most of previous Dooms are good

I strongly recommend Kailh Jade switches. And also - be wary of ESD. Last year, around winter when the humidity is low (25-30%), I had constant ESD shocks when touching the keyboard, until one time the shock killed an LED, which in turn killed the entire row of lights.
Luckily, thanks to the keyboard being open-source a local repair shop was able to find, buy and replace it with the exact same LED model for like $20.
