I love my fountain pens, but yes, there’s something to be said about writing in pencil. Somehow I’m more fluid with the latter, with less worry about making a mistake. Physically there’s less drag on the page, too, especially compared to the EF pen nibs I tend to favour.
Check out Vlad’s Timeline system. I like how the writing is continuous, with a thin sidebar for classifiers.

Ink suggestions, please
I'm looking for an everyday #fountainpen ink colour for my Hobonichi. It needs to be dark enough to be easily legible, and light enough to not ghost on Tomoe River paper as much as black and deep navy do.
No yellows, oranges, or dull greys, please. Subtle shades only. I'm thinking something in the blues or dusky purples would be nice. I'll be using an EF nib.

Do you know the Nutbush dance? It’s true—it really is an Australian icon! Everyone under the age of 65 or so did this at school as a kid and knows it still.

@npub10vt…xctq reminded me of my complicated relationship with Moleskine notebooks just now. .
The form factor still warms my heart, but now that fountain pens are my thing I’ve had to leave the MSK on the shelf.
Currently enjoying the compact A6 versions of the Stálogy and Hobonichi notebooks with my Hongdian Black Forest EF, all of which live in my new Orbitkey EDC. The Bellroy is taking a well earned break. I

I heard recently that young people of today (under 30) have trouble reading linked handwriting, or cursive. Is that true? Some have reported scarcely being able to read it at all, which I find hard to believe.
I do my lower case d's like a reversed number 6, and my r's can be normal or old style.
What do you think, oh young person reading this? Can you read my handwriting easily, or is it a bit of a guessing game? (poll in the comments)

The Pilot Kakuno is a surprisingly good fountain pen to write with for the price. This is the F, on regular office 100 gsm paper folded to A7. More on the cheap but good writing instruments I’m using in the next #ptpl post.

Is there a plain text tool you can’t do without?
“ In theory, no. That’s the beauty of plain text. But I would be sad if I could no longer use iA Writer or Taskpaper.”

Last week I found a 100ml bottle of one of my favourite Herbin #fountainPen #ink colours (Poussière de Lune, or moon dust) for only a little more than the glass bottled 30ml version!

My precious baby grandson lived for 11 short days. We are devastated, but so very thankful we got to stroke his tiny head and say au revoir — till we meet again!
I made some digital posters with words that have brought peace and comfort as I grieve.
They are free if you need them, but if you have the means I’d be grateful if you considered buying one. Proceeds will go towards supporting my son and his wife at this difficult time. https://ko-fi.com/ellane/shop/quotesofcomfort
Boosts appreciated.

For the first time since getting my first email address in the late 90s, I am consistently at inbox zero! Feels amazing, like I am the Superwoman of email right now.
Thank you to Carl Pullein for clarifying the process and making it feel doable. The teachers were always there, perhaps, but until recently this student was not ready.

Right, back to the Wonderland222 planner. In no way do I regret shelving it for 3 months in favour of a hand drawn Moleskine Cahier. Seems like every few months I need a sea change. Novelty.
This Tomor River paper is a delight! 50gsm and no bleed with fountain pens.

Some cheap fountain pens are surprisingly nice to write with. This is the Hongdian Black Forest extra fine. Matte black body and nib.

Once upon a time, not so very long ago, fountain pen friendly paper was all there was.
Moleskine Cahier, my recent ink pen renaissance is sorely testing our relationship. Smarten up, please! What were you thinking, making a classic book with newsprint quality paper??

Right on, Meredith.
The other day I asked Claude to help me calculate a day in the future based on certain criteria, and its answer included my general location. After asking how it knew where I was, it told me it didn't know how it knew and definitely shouldn't be able to know that. Reported (not that it'll do any good). #ai

#Gardening in someone else’s garden is more fun than in my own. Doesn’t hurt that here in #Victoria there isn’t the immediate threat of leaches, funnel web spiders, and venomous snakes that we have in #NSW!
We don’t dig in the backyard without covered limbs, sturdy shoes, and several glass jars to catch the funnel webs (and drop them off for milking later).

To Substack, or not to Substack? Curtis’ thoughts on the topic are worth your time.
Since abandoning my Substack blog (with custom domain) earlier this year, paid support has gone down significantly. BUT I’m delighted to finally be an indie blogger! No longer fenced in or caught up with stats, I finally feel free to do what I want, when I want.
2025 Goal: support more indie bloggers, any way that I can. #blogging #indie

Thank you for the info, I didn’t know that. I’m still leaning toward the Siupernote. They have an Aussie distributor, and I very much like the idea of a user-replaceable battery and pen nib that doesn’t need replacing.

Well JB sells them. I’d rather buy tech from a tech store with a good after sales service track record, than from a hardware store where the staff likely know little about them.

Since when did Bunnings become a drop shipping hub? Just saw an Onyx Boox e-ink device on their website. FYI Bunnings is a hardware / handyman store. Paint, wood, nails, bathroom fittings, plants. I am so not buying tech from a place like that! #australia #tech

Inktober day 17 - Journal
After doing a stylised sketch of my old 5 year diary, I took a snap of the real thing: a Leuchtturm 1917 Some lines a day book. Open, as you might expect, to October 17.

Hello, dear newly disgruntled Adobe Illustrator / PhotoShop / InDesign users!
You may like to know that the Affinity Suite is currently on sale for 50% off. No subscription. Perhaps there'll be one in the future for fancy Canva-integrated collaboration, but the base products will always be free. I'm an optimistic soul, so I believe them.
Yes Affinity apps can open native Adobe files. I've been a satisfied customer for many years, happy to endorse them.

An Obsidian user on Medium recently lost an entire vault to data corruption because of an encryption plugin.
I’m very sorry this happened to them, and that they didn’t have a backup.
Truly, if our notes in Obsidian can’t function without features that exist only in that app, we’ve shackled ourselves to the wall of a prison without a door.
Always have an exit plan! Always backup your work! And never lock all your data with a key you don’t own.

Your notes are a form of personal currency.
Leaving these notes in an #app that doesn't give you control over your data is like leaving money—that's not backed by precious metals—in the bank.
Both could be frozen, or disappear, at any moment. No, that's not scaremongering. If you think locked-in notes data and #CBDC sound awesome, I'd invite you to explore the definition of true #freedom.
If you must use a locked-in app, you'd better have a robust #backup system in place. #obsidian
