driving to Glasgow in the middle of a storm: not exactly recommended, it took like an hour+ longer than it should have and it was mildly terrifying

@nprofile…m7ah it's standard fare for GPON in the UK, but yeah, probably nobody at Apple is testing their shiny new machines with such things

lol. it seems Apple have some memory unsafety in their macOS PPPoE kernel driver, given whenever I enable it the entire system kernel panics with what I assume is an MTE failure:

a friend's WiFi access point failed in an interesting way: it refused to allow correctly-authenticating clients on with the Android error "Access point temporarily full" (?!). I had a go with wpa_supplicant which produced
wlp1s0: CTRL-EVENT-AUTH-REJECT 3c:78:95:xx:xx:xx auth_type=3 auth_transaction=1 status_code=17
According to the 802.11 standard pdf this is "Association denied because the AP is unable to handle additional associated STAs". Maybe it had some form of obscure memory leak where it never deleted old stations from its list?

Tonight at @nprofile…aszg -- you know how UK legislation is frequently "The Something (Bit in Brackets) Order 1984" and sometimes even "The Something Else (Bit in Brackets) (Second Bit) Act 1753"?
Well we were curious what the longest set of brackets one after the other is, and it turns out the answer is 6, in cases such as "The Pigs (Records, Identification and Movement) (Interim Measures) (Wales) (No.2) (Amendment) (No.2) Order 2003" (along with 17 other such acts!)
There are 468 pieces of legislation with 5 sequential brackety bits (most of them deal with either shellfish poisoning or coronavirus), 2042 pieces with 4, and so on; see the graph below!

one of the greatest curses of having ADHD is that I seem to be pretty good at realising when there are structural problems in a software team I'm in that are making everyone sad and slower at developing things, but this only happens because they affect me disproportionately
in the presence of good management this is I suppose fine, but in most places I've worked in so far you kind of need this magical thing called "social capital" in order to actually fix the problems, and this is very hard to gain if you're busy being bogged down by them and don't manage to ship enough code to earn the respect of your peers!
(this is one of a multitude of reasons why exclusively focusing on people's technical skills can actually be quite unhealthy; I'm really rediscovering why DEI is important from first principles lately…)

@nprofile…htaz arguably the lint is just a bad one — the previous sprintf was actually fine, since I could just put brackets around the host to make it work. or maybe net.JoinHostPort could be a teeny bit smarter and not add extra brackets if the host already has brackets round it?

2025-10-05 04:59:18 GMT

finally got around to updating gotosocial (the thing that made me do it was not being able to favourite anyone’s posts any more, since mastodon started sending out interaction policies)! and I don’t think anyone on the dev team uses ipv6, since I had to patch a fun regression that meant you couldn’t use :: as a bind-address any more

@nprofile…htaz well the ironic thing here is, that's probably what caused the bug! I bet the linter realised one of these situations was eventually being passed to a dialer, but didn't catch the other one

hahaha yes, I successfully triggered the iOS "your NFC secure element is too full, please delete some cards" UI!
for the unaware, Apple Wallet cards are really Java Card programs stored on an embedded Secure Element chip, separate from the main processor
this chip has limited storage! if you overfill it — say, by wasting $40 on TAP transit cards — it forces you to make room for more with this rarely-seen popup
