🤍 All About Rimas (Breadfruit): The Farm-to-Table Superfood You Should Know
🌿 What is Rimas?
Rimas, scientifically named Artocarpus altilis, is widely known in English as Breadfruit. It is a beloved staple crop across the Philippines, Southeast Asia, and many tropical regions—including the Pacific Islands and the Caribbean. It belongs to the same plant family as jackfruit (langka) and chempedak, but unlike its sweet, fleshy cousin, rimas is prized for its starchy, potato-like texture when cooked.
In Filipino farming communities, rimas is more than just food—it is a symbol of resilience. It grows abundantly in backyards, small farms, and coastal areas, thriving in warm, humid climates like Batangas and other parts of Calabarzon. A single mature rimas tree can produce hundreds of fruits every year, making it a reliable, low-maintenance source of food for families and communities.
🌱 From the Farm: How Rimas Grows & Harvested
Rimas trees are tall, evergreen, and sturdy—they can reach up to 20 meters high! They start bearing fruit just 3 to 5 years after planting, and keep producing for decades.
- Growing conditions: They love full sun and well-drained soil, and can even withstand strong tropical winds—perfect for Philippine weather.
- Harvest time: Fruits are picked while still firm and green, or when they turn slightly yellow and give off a soft, sweet scent. Farmers use long bamboo poles or climb carefully to harvest them, since ripe rimas falls easily and bruises badly.
- Sustainability: Rimas is a “climate-smart” crop. It needs very little fertilizer or pesticides, helps prevent soil erosion with its deep roots, and stores huge amounts of carbon—great for both farmers and the planet!
🥔 Nutrition: Why Rimas is a Healthy Choice
Often called a “superfood of the tropics,” rimas is packed with goodness:
✅ Rich in complex carbohydrates—great for steady energy, no sudden sugar spikes
✅ Loaded with fiber—supports digestion and keeps you full longer
✅ Full of potassium, vitamin C, B vitamins, and magnesium—boosts immunity and heart health
✅ Naturally gluten-free and low in fat
✅ Has more protein than potatoes or rice—perfect for plant-based diets
🍳 Cooking Rimas: Simple, Delicious, Versatile
The picture you shared shows rimas being boiled—this is the most basic and traditional way to prepare it! When cooked, it has a soft, fluffy texture similar to bread or roasted chestnuts, with a mild, nutty flavor.
Popular Ways to Cook Rimas in the Philippines:
1. Nilagang Rimas (Boiled Rimas) – Just like in your photo! Peel the tough skin, cut into chunks, boil in salted water for 15–20 minutes until tender. Eat it plain, dipped in vinegar with garlic and chili, or paired with grilled fish, fried pork, or tinola broth.
2. Prito / Toron na Rimas – Slice boiled rimas into strips and fry until golden, or wrap sweetened rimas in lumpia wrappers for a crispy snack.
3. Ginataang Rimas – Simmer rimas chunks in rich coconut milk with ginger, onions, and a little salt or shrimp paste. It tastes creamy and comforting!
4. Rimas as Rice Alternative – Mash boiled rimas, or cut into small cubes to replace part of your rice—great for a lighter, more nutrient-dense meal.
5. Savory Dishes – Add it to stews, sinigang, or pochero; it soaks up flavors beautifully, just like taro or yam.
🤝 Rimas: More Than Just Food
For many Filipino farmers, rimas is a “safety crop”—when rice or corn harvests are affected by storms or drought, rimas keeps producing. It feeds families, cuts down food costs, and even supports local livelihoods, as more people are rediscovering it as a sustainable, local alternative to imported staples.
Every bowl of boiled rimas, every creamy ginataan, carries the hard work of farmers, the richness of Philippine soil, and a piece of our culinary heritage. It’s simple, honest food—rooted in the land, and good for you and the earth. 💛
Would you like a step-by-step recipe for perfect boiled rimas or ginataang rimas next? 😊
