I will have to RTFM, then. But, I did get Xwd and Xwud installed so I could use CDE's native screen capture function, and PROOF:

THAT WAS IT! Now I just need to figure out how to add some new application launchers and a screenshot tool so I can post proof

Looked it up on the CDE issue tracker archive, it's rpcbind. Hangon, I think I got it going correctly...

Come on, this time has to be the charm! And also, re-running config was a good idea earlier, as I found in the tracker that there were some flags I was supposed to pass to make it play nicely with Fedora. For those playing along at home, https://sourceforge.net/p/cdesktopenv/tickets/200/

AAAAAAAAAAA, I need to build this from a path that has no spaces in it. I had symlinked things to avoid issues like this, but... it went for the real path x_x
So now I gotta move the repo to somewhere else, make clean and re-run configure...

OKAYYYY that is a new one... while making the documentation:

Back home, there was a fix from Tim Hentenaar for the Motif issue I ran into, going to be re-attempting the CDE build with the new version

The revival of Motif that I linked to at the start of this thread... it won't build CDE! :blobfoxcry:

I'M DOING IT, I'M BUILDING THE CDE

2026-08-24 21:02:27 GMT

- reply

It's a shame the docs are sorely outdated for building on my distro (Fedora), seems like the devs are more focused on supporting Debian

2026-08-24 20:56:30 GMT

- reply

If the docs are still up-to-date, probably the easy thing to help them out with is making the two programs in the CDE application suite that are having problems become functional again: dtcm (Desktop Calendar Manager, has "a variety of problems") and dtmail (Desktop Mail, an email client which needs help with busted SSL support for IMAP and POP servers)

Now there *is* some movement on the official CDE repos : https://sourceforge.net/projects/cdesktopenv/ but it's on SourceForge so for most people it effectively doesn't exist. But the repo is here: https://sourceforge.net/p/cdesktopenv/code/ci/master/tree/

https://github.com/thentenaar/motif This is amazing, Motif But Actually Maintained (and it doesn't contain slop! Refreshing!)
Now if we can also get a CDE revival to go along with this... :blobfoxfloofcute:

I'm very surprised they actually did this! Last time this was petitioned for, the British government went "nope, he's a double felon, ain't happening" (the felonies were homosexuality and suicide)

It's not a clipboard issue. Okteta has the right GUI design, but pasting into the hex region will instead paste it into the ASCII region, which is a known limitation. GHex doesn't have this problem but is too GNOME to be a usable program. And nearly everything else is either bitrotted away from neglect or wildly over-engineered.

Oh cool I was looking for a better hex editor on Linux that would let me paste text as hex data rather than as ASCII text. Let me go and oh it's terminal based nevermind :(

The history of DEs and GUI toolkits in UNIX/Linux is... weird. Like, CDE was the big player but it was proprietary, so a clone called the K Desktop Environment was made, but it used the (at the time) closed source Qt toolkit, so people responded by making GNOME because freedom freedom freedom
Also XFCE had to be completely rewritten from scratch because it originally used the XForms toolkit, which at the time wasn't FOSS, so it instead had to be redone with GTK in order for distros to support it

Are you leveraging the built-in tone generator of the 65c265 for an extra pair of sine wave channels in conjunction with whatever you already have planned for the sound hardware? I know the docs imply this is intended purely for telephony shenanigans but nothing is stopping you from using whatever to make it play arbitrary sine waves👀
