We're trying https://umap.openstreetmap.de on this trip, which allows you to put POIs (points of interest) on maps collaboratively! It works, it's pretty cool, but it's kinda finicky, and only available if you're online.
So I think there must be a better solution. Has someone seen OSM apps that allow you to sync POIs between multiple people?

The last part I wanted to tell you about is how to allow remote people to join your multi-seat setup: Use the VNC server `wayvnc`, which, amazingly, can create a new "virtual seat" for each incoming connection (using the command line flag -t / --transient-seat)!
In the blog post, I give detailed instructions on how to set that up, and how to add the web-based VNC client "novnc", so that other people can join using their browsers! It's not a *great* setup, but it works, with zero patches!

Support in other applications is spotty: The #alacritty terminal emulator accepts input from multiple seats, #kitty doesn't.
You can kinda browse the web together using #firefox, but only if you start it after the seats have been set up. #chromium doesn't seem to support multiple seats at all.
I think writing end-user applications with great multi-seat support (or patching existing ones) is currently the lowest-hanging fruit!

I was interested in patching SDL because I wanted to make some *games* for multiple mice/keyboards using the https://love2d.org game engine!

I also looked at the multimedia library SDL, and it added *some* multi-seat support in 2025: Input events now have a `which` field, that tell you the device ID. And you can use it to figure out the seat!
There's a caveat: The which field is only present for *relative mouse mode*. I opened this issue about it: https://github.com/libsdl-org/SDL/issues/16027 And my blog post above has instructions on how to patch this yourself.

The next step towards multi-seat applications is having support for it in the GUI toolkits/graphics libraries!
To my surprise, @nprofile…gynq has excellent built-in support, at least conceptually! Events have a `get_seat` method, which directly tell you which `Seat` an event belongs to.
Most GTK widgets don't really respect multi-seat input, of course…

Me and a bunch of friends are going to do a "search engine-free day" tomorrow!
On that day, visiting Wikipedia, MDN or StackOverflow directly and using their search feature would be permitted, but we'll try not to use general-purpose search engines (and no LLMs).

I've been practicing to put my face in the water every day, and it's getting easier.
One thing that really helped was getting swimming goggles! Not having water in my eyes helps me focus on breathing.
For practicing, I slowly graduated from the tiny warm relaxation pool to a pool used to teach swimming, and then to the 25-meter, which is often less busy.
On Monday, I managed to swim the full 25 meters in breast stroke, with my face going in the water for each stroke for the first time! 💚

Something that would be really cool is a big, circular, high-contrast LCD/OLED display, and then writing custom clock faces for it! :3

To clarify, do you always breathe out through your nose when underwater? Or sometimes also through the mouth? A book I've looked at is ambiguous about that.
Rationally, I think that if your face points down underwater, water shouldn't really go into the nose anyway, if the "pressure matches"? But I'm not too sure about that.

I still triggered my "out, now!" reflex a couple of times, especially when trying to go a bit deeper, and staying vertical. Gonna try practicing this every time I go swim!
Also – turns out holding my breath, closing my eyes, pinching my nose with one hand, and then diving is not a problem at all. My fear seems to be specifically about water entering my nose.
How did y'all learn how to do this?! :D

But today, I had a good experience: I got in a small, warm pool and started practicing this. Carefully lowering my nose under water, while blowing bubbles from it.
It was very uncomfortable at first, but after a few attempts, I noticed how I could stay in that submerged position a bit longer than before!
So I realized that I probably *will* be able to learn this!! And that makes me super happy! :') It will be so cool once I can dive a bit!

All my life, I've been scared to put my face in the water. Swimming longer distances with my face above the water was not the problem, neither deep pools or lakes.
But not being able the breathe, having water in my face, makes me panic. I have to swallow, and have to get up! I have some bad memories from swimming classes where I felt ashamed that I couldn't "keep up" with everyone else. :/
So learning front crawl or "proper" breast stroke seemed out of the question.

This is all a bit "thought in progress". But it seems that we as an open-source community need to figure this stuff out together, and for that, it's important to talk about it. That's why I wanted to share. Probably not surprising for most of you, though. :P
I'm quite glad that, in our own project, we're in a position where we can steer clear of most of this crap for now. It feels like a weight has been lifted off my chest.

I want our project to be independent and resilient! Relying on the products of big, for-profit companies and their business model doesn't seem very wise in that regard. @nprofile…r4az also recently pointed out that, by embracing LLM coding, you suddenly divide your community into rich and poor.
And I want to act in accordance to my ethical concerns about energy usage, worker exploitation, and the mass violation of copyright and open-source licenses caused by these companies.

Relatedly, I'd like to retain a deep understanding the project and its code base, and get to practice skills like debugging, technical writing, and using the involved languages and tools. This is the fun part for me! :)
I've used LLMs for generating code completions in the past, and it has led to me relying on them too much. I want to get more skillful in what I do, not less. Even if it can be exhausting at times.

First of all, I want to be proud of the things I create! This happens mostly when I work through hard problems, and then still solve them in the end. That means that the process of working on a project might be more important to me than the actual outcome.
If we started outsourcing the work to LLM tools, the satisfaction of having new features would feel hollow.

I learned the basics of how to fly a (simulated) Airbus A320 this week!
Going from being completely overwhelmed to knowing what some of these buttons do, was a very satisfying experience.

`threadcat` downloads files using their original filename on the Mastodon server. So you'll end up with a lot of files like "f55dbddca60e64cb.jpg"…
I tried deriving better filenames from the alt text – for example, taking the first two "non-filler" words from the alt text. That gives you filenames like "colorful-circles.jpg", "small-grey.jpg" or "drawing-snow.jpg", and possibly "drawing-snow-2.jpg".
Another options would just be using timestamps? "2026-04-17T13:54Z.jpg"?

Food station #3, at 60 km! It's the only *outdoor* food station, which is unfortunate, as it has started to rain! 🙃
So I'm sitting under my um-ba-rella, and rest my feet a bit. Just had two very nice calls, which kept me distracted.
I could report about various things that hurt, but I'd rather focus on other things: I just have to walk another 25 km, and then around 15, and then I'm there!

After chomping down a lot of food at the last food station, I suddenly had to visit the toilet very urgently. 😳
I found a nearby gas station, and asked whether I could use their toilet. The person behind the counter handed me a paper bin, and smirked: "Here, but empty it afterwards!" Ha ha. (He then handed me the proper toilet keys!)
Feeling better now! 😅 That's the advantage of hiking around a city: You're never far from infrastructure.

At this point, I've seen several people sitting down and patching up their feet. :/ I feel okay. I mostly feel some pressure on my toes, probably because there is. :P

Other than at a running event, there's no crowd here cheering us on... but occasionally, cars drive by and honk at us! :D
It's interesting how, after 15 km, the participants have now sorted themselves pretty well by speed! There are at least two people who've pretty much accompanied me forany kilometers now.
But now I've reached the first food & water station! 😋
Oh, and important morale boost: I've passed the places where I started feeling my blisters last time – so far, without any pain! 🤞

So, why did I get blisters that day? I think it might've been a combination:
It was the first warmer day of spring, and I was nervous, so I might've sweated more than usual.
And I walked *fast* in the beginning, often overtaking people in front of me, on rough terrain, which likely caused unusual forces on my feet.
So I'm not doing that today. I'll walk a leisurely pace, and adapt to the speed of the crowd!
It's a... long-distance hike, not a sprint :P

When I understood what the problem was, it was already too late to react.
@nprofile…qkth kindly brought me some blister bandaids, but at that point, the blisters were already about as big as the bandaids...
I then adapted my foot posture for pain relief, which probably caused more friction and more blisters.
And then, the larger blisters popped, and it was all very horrible. I'm not very good at dealing with pain. :/

So, about last year's blister problem.
I was very much not prepared for them, because I never got blisters during my training hikes, during my marathons, or pretty much anytime in my life!
But it was probably naive to think I could never get them...
Last year, I started feeling a slight itching under my soles after the first 10 km or so. At first, I thought I'd gotten some little stones in my shoes! But I didn't find any.

At Landungsbrücken, there was a performer in a panda costume making cute gestures, and someone passing by said: "Look, we could've hugged this panda all day! But no, we decided to walk for 100 km! 🙃"
Oh, there's someone who has collected around 8 wristband from past Megamarsch events! 😳

Today, I'm doing another attempt at hiking 100 km around Hamburg in 24 hours!
Last year, I had to abort after 30 km, due to unexpected blisters on my feet. 😖
But this time, I've brought double-layered socks, blister bandaids, new (but already worn-in) shoes, and a determination to not walk too fast early on! :) Let's see how this goes.
But first, I'm taking a ferry to the starting point! ⛴️

I've been hacking on it a lot this week, with my silly human hands, and it's been a lot of fun!
Right now, it can only read threads from Mastodon, and only output Markdown, but both directions could be extended.
To try it out, I've been using it to publish one blog post each day this week – you might have noticed! :D

Say hello to `threadcat`! 🧶🐱
It's a little Rust tool which takes the URL to a Mastodon thread, and converts it to a Markdown file. It also downloads all attached media files (and their alt texts)!
That way, it's really easy to get a "first draft" for a blog post from a thread you wrote!

- If you visit Tainan, be prepared to take Taxis/Uber everywhere. There are mostly no sidewalks, and very infrequent busses.
- The "Junk" shelves in Hard Off stores are really fun. Several in Tainan, bit out of the way in other cities
- There are plenty of vegetarian buffets where you pay by weight; great for sampling things!
- The basement of Guanghua Electronic Plaza has the best electronics stores I've seen!
- Free tea samples at the Taipei Tea Promotion Center!

Loved the week we spent in Taiwan.
It's a really fun place. Good street food everywhere! The people are as lovely as we'd heard. Cool mix of Chinese and Japanese influences. A high speed train across the country!

It's hard to bring across the atmosphere in the buildings of the electronics markets across in a few pictures.
It's a bit like an electronics trade fair, but messier and permanent? The multi-level buildings contain uncountable small booths, offering anything from electronic components and computer hardware to LED lights, screens, tools, gadgets, cameras, smartphone cases, cables, ...
Everything smells of cigarette smoke.

I booked our apartment in Shenzhen based on @nprofile…9750's area recommendation. What I didn't realize is that we now live very close to Shenzhen's main electronic market that you might've heard about! :D
To get a basic orientation, the maps in @nprofile…lcse's "Essential Guide" were very helpful! https://www.bunniestudios.com/blog/2019/essential-guide-to-shenzhen-web-edition/ Even though it's 10 years old, I found most things to still be correct.

But many things are super interesting! Obviously the high-tech malls! Cheap, fun food. There's rental infrastructure for power banks? A pretty mixture of sky scrapers and parks.

Arriving in mainland China, I'm feeling quite some culture shock, more than in Hong Kong:
English doesn't get you very far here, most signage is just in Chinese, and communicating with people involves translation apps (or gesturing).
Payment is done neither by cash nor by credit card – instead, you need special apps like AliPay. Some services seem to require a WeChat account, which I didn't manage to install on my phone yet, despite trying a lot. :/

We made it to Shenzhen! What I didn't expect at all: The amount of electric scooters! 🛵🛵🛵
People are using them to take their kids somewhere, to lug around packages, to deliver food, just to get from A to B quickly ...
They also drive on the sidewalk, and honk a lot, meep meep!

I'd like to design my first free-form stickers (for @nprofile…gewz) – has someone ever managed to produce proper print files for that using open-source software like Inkscape or Scribus?
Specifically, it seems the print shops want a "100% purple" line in a "named spot color" on its own "PDF layer".
(I'm not really interested in how you would do this in proprietary software.)

For myself, ideally, the script would set up a #Nix flake with all dependencies in it, and activate it using direnv. Which would probably mean transforming the nixpkgs package into a flake?
The script could also give you some aliases to run the nixpkgs phases like configure, patch, or build, from your current shell – I like using the fish shell, but the stdenv assumes bash. I haven't found a reasonable way to invoke the phases "in a subshell"… Getting errors like this: https://github.com/NixOS/nix/issues/15282

It's been fun, it feels like a new superpower to "quickly fix something and send a PR". It's also a super dangerous rabbit hole generator, because now that it's easy to fix stuff, it's very tempting to do so… 🐇
My prototype has some rough edges:
It clones the latest commit, which doesn't always compile using the #nixpkgs setup (but it seems reasonable to check whether the bug is still there).

You'd roughly need to:
- Figure out which program is currently focused
- Figure out the Git repo of this software
- Clone it into a temporary directory
- Set up the required tools to start hacking on it and compile it
As a quick prototype, I wrote a li'l Bash script that does some of these things. It makes heavy use of #nix and #nixpkgs:
