@npub1eys…6x02 Most of this is applicable in most situations (I've found). However, I've always taken issue with the first several items--well, not with those items, but with the apparent intent of people sharing this list online, at work, etc.
Yes, those are ways to bog an organization down, but many of them are also ways to prevent management from abusing employees or shoving through unhelpful initiatives that will harm many people (and the company).

@npub1kvw…5jv7 Side note: finding a good, healthy, gets-along-well gaming group is really hard, I think. I've been in one for 4 years (we're all online) and we seem to still like each other and play about every 3 weeks.
I think we work because the DM (an I/O psychologist who creates surveys for the military LOL) put an insane amount of time and very good expertise into the player selection process: broad ad on reddit.com/r/lfg and some other places, a very well crafted survey about various issues, then follow-up phone interviews. I think there were a couple hundred initial responses and a couple dozen phone interviews, resulting in a group of six.

@npub19xn…974n Ah, that makes sense.
I've applied for funding in the past to do surveys, and to pay participants for their time. It's an entire thing. The people holding the purse strings (e.g., state governments, universities, granting foundations) can get really weird and obsessive about "preventing abuse" of money given to participants. All the (very few) times I've had money for participants, the funders insisted on gift cards and having participants sign for them (I did some stuff to make that much more anonymous, anyway).
The main reason people send a token amount like $2 is to leverage the human tendency to feel a need to reciprocate. If you "pre-give" some cash to potential participants, it actually increases survey response rates more than giving a larger amount afterward, contingent on participation.
Getting a survey's response rate above some reasonable number, maybe even as low as 20%, is a massive challenge. If you don't have a high enough response rate, you can't really trust your results.

@npub1gef…9de3 I find this super interesting. Personally, it probably doesn't affect me at all (I mean, the number of women on the planet who might have sex with me at some point before I die is very small and probably not overlapping too much with the 4B movement).
I am sometimes in favor of movements or actions that push things to their logical conclusions. Men have, indeed, caused a lot of the problems on the planet, and those causing the most trouble also seem desperately to need women. So a movement in which women 100% divest from men is a logical direction to take.

I'm really not one for direct action with even a little risk. I'm more the "post a rant about fascist assholes on facebook" type.
However, someone attached a stupid Trump/misinformation flag to an overpass crossing a freeway in my town. My housemate sent me a photo. She was upset about having to drive under it every day to work. So I took it down.
Even though I was basically removing litter from public property it was a little nerve-wracking (racking? IDK). But I also feel much better, knowing it's gone.

@npub1zdp…vqv8 haha. I'm kind of with you on this. Basic ML is often defended with a sort of "the proof is in the pudding" argument, which doesn't sit well with me, but whatevs. In my opinion, basic ML is stepwise regression on steroids, almost guaranteed to capitalize on sample randomness and produce lots of misleading results. I think the standard practice is to try to rein that problem in with a few things like (importantly) always running models on a training dataset and then testing them on a separate production dataset, noting shrinkage, etc. They also do (did?) a lot of dimensional reduction stuff like PCA and various decompositions. But the theory behind it is, it seems to me (though I've not done a deep dive), pretty underdeveloped. There's a lot of shrugging and saying things like "It increased sales for a month, so it worked." Then they abandon that model and move to another one (though some get put into long-term production for better and/or worse).
As for LLMs, I'm seeing a lot of statisticians and data scientists online becoming disillusioned. Their bosses all want LLMs in everything, but the LLMs don't necessarily produce any new insights from data, despite taking hundreds of time more energy to do their computations.

@npub1zdp…vqv8 As someone wanting to leave academia and go to something (like research? data science?), I've been hit with this for a few years. The people doing parametric (or even nonparametric) old school stats are a minority in industry. Machine learning ate the industry years ago, well before LLMs. Random forests, GMMs, etc. are everywhere. Industry doesn't care about discovering truth; it cares about a model that will increase its bottom line by 1.5%.

I asked him about it and he said, legally, all you need is for whatever mark you put on paper to be relatively consistent across multiple documents over time, to establish a pattern that this is how you sign. He said it doesn't matter at all what the signature actually looks like.
So... cursive not required, I guess.

Two stories about capitalist interactions today, one bad and one good.
Story 1: I ordered something from backcountry.com. I had good experiences with them a long time ago, found some bike shoes I wanted for a good price, and ordered. Had to dig through old passwords and emails to reactivate my account, but no problem. After many days I was wondering where my effing order was.
Well.
I didn't change my address since the last time I used that account (approx. 2012). So it was being delivered over and over to the wrong place in the wrong entire state.
Got online, huge sigh, girded my loins, and clicked the "chat with a rep" button, hoping this wouldn't be AI or party-line bullshit.
It wasn't. In 8 minutes the rep had redirected my order, and even gave me a one-time pass (it was totally my fault) on sending it to the wrong address; no restocking fee, no delivery charge, nothing.

No, really, the seriously last note:
Fascist (or "merely" bigoted) pundits, politicians, and leaders of organizations weaponize all of the above, I think: I see these people urging their followers to avoid outgroup members or only interact with outgroup members in ways guaranteed to confirm stereotypes. I see the stereotypes repeated and reinforced, further guaranteeing that intergroup contact has no real danger of making anything better.

Antiracism, gender equality, SGM equality, etc. are not the default. Every major ethical system seems to have lots of words dedicated to reducing prejudice; I think that's because we fall into it so easily, and compassionate, rational thinkers have understood this since long before writing existed.
Vote for the hard thing. Vote for equality. Vote for systems that help us be good humans despite being humans. Feed the cultural thread toward ethical behavior that we've been nurturing for many thousands of years. It needs the help.

There are other mechanisms besides these driving stereotypes and prejudice, but these hit me hard when I think of them. Our brains are almost programmed for prejudice. We've got the raw materials for bigotry in our OS, easily catalyzed by our social experiences.
Populist and fascist scapegoating are easy to inflame: feed those tendencies.

When would the stereotypes about Type Y ever disappear? The majority group will have these experiences:
1. A Type Y did something bad, we punished or exiled them, and we didn't have any more problems from Type Y people.
2. We kick the new Type Y people right out of town or never let them in at all. And we have never had any problem with Type Y invaders messing things up.
How do you convince those people Type Y are humans just like them and no more likely to be dicks than they are?

Sometimes Type Y people show up from outside, and sometimes they cause trouble. Sometimes the native Type Y people cause problems--maybe even less frequently than the majority Type X people, but it happens.
The Type X villagers ruthlessly enact their value: on a hair trigger they punish the local Type Y people, hurting or exiling them. They are very unlikely to allow foreign Type Y people to remain in town for more than a day or two; those folks get railroaded out pretty quickly.
So...

Consider a person who has been treated badly by a few people of Type X. Maybe those people are in a strong situation leading the to treat our subject badly. maybe they're just shitty people. They are only a small proportion of Type X people.
Our subject's experience is "Most of my worst experiences were because of Type X people" and "All Type X people I've ever known have treated me badly."
Making rational judgments about Type X people would be quite hard. Prejudice seems almost inevitable. How do you deprogram this person from their own experience?

Hello, makers and crafters and engineers and anyone else who can help.
How to preserve this?
I have... let's say "liberated"... a sign that was on the side of the road in my small town for a few years, and was eventually pulled down or fell down.
Right when the pandemic started (IIRC) this rusted sign got sprayed with the word "HOPE". Nothing else, just that word. It was visible in a little greenspace between the two tiny towns here. I tried to photograph it several times but never really captured it. This sign is meaningful to me.
It fell down or was taken down (suspiciously, right when the state police built a station across the road, though it maybe just fell down). That was almost two years ago.
Tonight I brought it home. It is now my baby. I want to preserve and enhance the "HOPE" graffiti, which has faded in the months sitting in the grass.
the sign is an old slab of steel (maybe 3/16" thick? IDK, it weighs at least 40 lbs). Very rusted, but also solid.
How to preserve this message? I'd prefer to simply highlight what is there, not repaint anything. Any ideas?

Late because who has time to both do Halloween and make a post to #makershour about it on the same day?
Q1. Who are you and what are you working on?
I'm a guy who just does stuff even though I have no formal training in the stuff I do. It's more fun that way...?
For over a decade I've mostly been the stay-at-home parent on Halloween, helping my kid with their costume (or making it entirely), then not having time to make one for myself, and needing to do academic work (every evening, every weekend... ugh) anyway. I've been the parent at the door giving candy to other kids. I haven't gone out in costume for over a decade.
This year I decided, come hell or high water, I was going to make myself a costume. I decided to make a wizard robe, which would also be wearable at burns (e.g., #burningman #regional events).
I took some pics (a few, at least) of the process and, for a change, actually posted them. Here is a reasonably informative build log on imgur.

I was devout LDS until my early 40s. The church has always opposed "gay marriage". My wife (in my early 30s to early 50s) and I had conversations about how much gay marriage was already in the church. We were in one--i.e., she was gay, as it turns out. We knew others in gay marriages, as well. Sure, at least one of the people in each such marriage was apparently straight, but there were a lot of gay/queer/trans/other-LGBTQIA+ people in Mormon marriages. Maybe more than in the less-conservative population, IDK.
Which the church didn't do anything at all to deter. In fact, the policies + culture aggressively encouraged it. GayIsBad + NobodyIsReallyGay + GetMarriedNoMatterWhat = lots of closeted queer folks.
Perhaps obviously by this point in this long post, that didn't work out and there were 15+ years of guilt, remorse, anguish, and assorted suffering all around. Digging out of that has taken half our adult lives so far. This has been the dark matter influencing our relationships with friends and family (mine still devout LDS), our work productivity (we're both uni profs), our scholarly productivity or lack thereof, and even our ability to do the mundane like get our bills paid on time and make sure the car doesn't die from lack of maintenance.
We have done everything we can to prevent this all from affecting our parenting, and our 13 y/o is amazing, so I hope we've kept their reasons-for-therapy-at-age-25 to a minimum.
I guess TL;DR: gay/queer marriage is common in conservative, anti-LGBTQ American Christian groups, just not the healthy kind.
(and now it's almost 7 a.m. and time to get aforementioned kid to the bus stop)

@npub1v5y…7a3f Brothers In Arms lby Dire Straits has a song I never liked: Your Latest Trick. The style and lyrics seem jarringly different from the rest of the tracks. I find it cheesy, too, and kind of trite.
The rest of the songs are thought provoking or truly soulful, but not that one.

@npub17xx…mfqa I grew up LDS. I heard college men saying they could never date a woman with more education than they had, or more money, or more assertiveness or a better job... I saw many women deemphasize their intelligence and other things to get men's attention.
Maybe it was the effect of older sisters, but this never made any sense. I told more than one boy I knew that they were ruling out the best women.
Probably the older sisters. Anyway, ended up married to a woman with a PhD in classics and later a partner with a Master's in community psych working in state juvenile justice and substance use policy. I don't think I'll ever truly understand the allure of subservience.

Lately I've been thinking a lot about the cultural assumption that companies need authoritarian leaders.
Co-ops, corporations for public good, and probably other kinds of orgs have some flavor of democratic leadership. It is not inconceivable at all.
But the idea that a business needs a corporate-style leader or leadership team is baked very deeply into the American worldview.

WTF. #Darktable shows me what I want to see with editing. Then when I open the exported file in my (#linux #mint) photo viewer (image viewer or Pix) I see more or less the same thing. But the thumbnail looks ultra-saturated.
When I upload the processed photo to some apps (e.g. #signal) it's ultra-saturated. But opening with Firefox looks fine. And here it looks (at least to me) fine.
ugh. I don't like not knowing how my images look to others after editing.

@npub1pv5…zq0l there are people doing the work that most needs to be done in the world and people who work with prisoners and treat them fully as humans are way up on that list IMO. Keep doing the work the world needs (even though a lot of the world doesn't understand that fact).

@npub1pv5…zq0l Sounds like you got involved in this research/treatment field kind of like I did... sideways. I ended up working in a treatment program for juveniles with sexual behavior problems in graduate school. Before that, after undergrad, I sort of randomly became a guard at a juvenile prison on the sex offender wing, which is what sent me in this direction.

Estimates of the percentage of men in the US who are sexually assaulted during their lives keep climbing as we slowly chip away at patriarchal cultural norms.
Some researchers have tried to use trends, stats from different groups, etc. to model/estimate the "true" rate of men being assaulted, assuming (and there's a lot of supporting evidence) that men are less likely to report being victimized than women are, even in anonymous surveys.
However, no matter what, lots of men are sexually abused by women. Maybe not as many as he other way around... but it's not a competition. There are lots of kinds of victims.
It's hard to put this on a bumper sticker or protest sign.

So why is this coming out only recently?
Because patriarchy. Hegemonic gender roles. Old-school masculinity. Men don't admit to being victimized, especially by women.
The history of sexual aggression research since perhaps the 1950s can be seen as peeling away the layers of patriarchal culture one by one, and finding previously-unrecognized groups of perpetrators and victims each time.

There are some very important points about women not having nearly the institutional power that men have, as a group.
However, I suspect male victims of rape don't find much comfort in this.
And it's not just men assaulting men. It's an awful lot of female perpetrators, usually (as is the case for female victims) in intimate relationships.

One of the main sources of information on this is the National Intimate Partner Sexual Violence Survey (NISVS).
See figures 1 and 2, here.
Assaults of men aren't "extremely rare." They're really fucking common. In these data they appear less common than assaults of women, but in other surveys they appear to be pretty close in frequency.

For decades the received wisdom even among researchers studying #sexualViolence was that assault of men by women was extremely rare, though maybe men were sometimes assaulted by other men.
Eventually, when researchers started actually asking the questions (and probably when the stigma about male victims of abuse reduced just slightly), a different picture emerged. In my memory this was somewhere between 2005 and 2015:
A lot of men get sexually assaulted. We're not talking about "minor" assaults (go ahead and make the case that there is such a thing or that it can be defined by an outside observer); these are psychologically or physically traumatizing assaults including rape.

Really fucking unpopular perspective coming up regarding #sexualviolence
I just saw an article with a photo of a woman holding a protest sign that said "Not all men but always men"
First, I get the motivation and the need for holding male abusers accountable.
Second, no. That's not accurate. The reality doesn't fit on a protest sign.

b. I have doubts that Centro de a Raza translates as "Centre for People of All Races". I mean... maybe, but my understanding of La Raza in Mexican American (especially radical) culture is the "race" of Mexican Americans, or sometimes of Hispanic peoples in general.
[CW: reference to colonialist sexual assault coming up]
As one person in El Zócalo (Mexico City) explained to naive 20-year-old me on Día de la Raza in 1989 when I asked what the holiday was about, "It's the day of *The Race*. My race. The race created when Christopher Columbus and his horny sailors landed in the Americas and started raping the natives."

And then it was 3:30 a.m. and I ended up listening to this with tears in my eyes.
For me there is exactly one version of this song: the one that rips my heart out and shows me the most painful days and decades of my life without letting me look away. Behind the celestial electric guitar and Buckley's agony, Cohen's words whisper that maybe, somehow, the years and love that seem wasted can be made valuable, straw into gold. But I have to listen carefully and breathe deep around my convulsing mind.

Regular librarians: We stopped keeping records of individuals' book checkouts when the government started asking us to identify terrorists
Harvard librarians: We write down names and IDs of students who look like they're supporting the wrong political causes and then we rat them out to the president

Presidents: You're violating fire safety rules
Students sing freedom songs.
Presidents: You're violating noise rules
students carry protest signs
Presidents: You're violating signage rules
Students sit quietly in a library for an hour with small messages on their laptops
Harvard president:...

I'm so fucking angry about this.
Behind the rest of the bullshit: LIBRARY STAFF became apparently-willing little minions of an anti- #freespeech president.
US #Universities are not laboratories of #democracy; they are authoritarian hierarchies. The president is the monarch and everyone else follows the orders or else.
That's my only explanation for why #LIBRARIANS became meek little fascist approval-seekers.

2024-10-06 03:47:47 GMT

Harvard students were punished by the university president for expressing unpopular opinions.
They STUDIED for an hour in a LIBRARY, with political messages taped to their laptops.
What if it had been only one student? What if the pro-Palestine message had been half as big? What if it had been half an hour?
There is no narrative worth the pixels it takes on a screen that makes this anything but direct, pure suppression of dissent. The students followed every rule, didn't do any of the things bullshit campus rules penalize in order to stop protests. They didn't block sidewalks, light candles, chant, march, or even (apparently) make anyone the least bit uncomfortable.
So the Harvard admin just flat-out punished them for expressing a political opinion.

There is a personality, or social style, or something, that I find unpleasant and very challenging to deal with. IDK its real name, but I think of it as smth like "instant and constant disapproval".
There are people who seem to use this as their coping mechanism for life. They find reasons to be annoyed with their environment and people in it. They don't hide it. There might be a small number of people they are generally pleased with, but I've seen that often those people just do what the constantly-annoyed person wants, which is of course quite nice.
I assume this approach to life gives people a sense of control or familiarity. I also think it might, for some people, be due to basically innate ongoing discomfort due to whatever biological processes lead to colicky baby syndrome, DMDD, and a host of related conditions.
In any case, it takes a toll on me. I find it deeply frustrating. I've spent a lot of my life learning to avoid those people, because I am almost never able (or inclined) to spend the time and energy needed to figure out how to live up to their internal standards day by day.
