I heard Simon Rosenberg start to address the need for Democrats to campaign on reform in the spring of 2024, but then he stopped after the debate and Biden dropped out.

My father-in-law told me that he is thinking about legally changing his name. He grew up thinking his middle name was his mother's maiden name. When he was 20, he needed a copy of his birth certificate and learned that his middle name was actually the last name of his father's best friend.
He says that he has been asked to explain the discrepancy several times during background checks for jobs.
He said he is thinking about changing his name because despite being born in the US, he is of Mexican descent, and if he is ever detained, he is worried the name discrepancies may be an issue that could lead to him being deported.
My father-in-law is a three-time Trump voter.

One thing that I don't see in tonight's numbers is a dropoff in GOP votes in red states.
The total numbers of GOP votes in Nebraska and WV match or slightly exceed 2020 numbers. Trump's percentages are lower because of the Haley vote, but the number of GOP votes hasn't decreased.
I am not sure what to think of that as I really expected some of the low-propensity voters to fall away a bit.
Not sure why I thought that would happen, but I did.

I heard that the district is getting rid of IEPs. (No, IEPs are federal law.) They are doing away with IEPs and giving every kid an aide that stays with them in the classroom instead. (No, aides wouldn't be in place of an IEP.) The neighboring district is doing it, and we're next. (I haven't heard that, but if it were true, it would not necessarily be bad. Most kids with IEPs should be in general education classrooms...) Explain that. (Well, in a perfect world, we wouldn't need special education. Kids would be identified early and placed in programs that helped support them, like preschool.) Oh, so indoctrination. That's answer? Indoctrination.
Holy shit. And two hours later, with me even conceding that I thought her views justified her voting for Trump and encouraging her to move to states that are likely to eliminate no-fault divorce, she still was not happy with my answers.
They don't make sense. There is no talking to them. They are crazy.

Trying to figure out next steps in dealing with the latest IEP dispute with the district.
I have a 2018 PowerPoint written by the now Assistant Superintendent, which she presented at a conference when she was the Director of Special Ed. It is a blueprint for denying parental requests. She claimed that denying requests was important as it kept power away from activist parents.
She also claimed there was little risk in doing so because districts could adjust their position during or after mediation if the parent pushed the issue.
No one at the district level knows that I have this document. And I can only confirm that the furner Superintendent has a copy of the letter written by the now Assistant Superintendent ...
I think I've decided what to do. Going to draft an email to the School Board and new Superintendent. They can either fix the issue or ignore it.

I followed a big account with over 600K on Twitter, and now they seem different. Not that informative. Not that entertaining. He even engaged in some clickbait outrage type posts today. "Can you believe this is happening?" And the "this" was at least three months old.
It really does seem quite Wizard of Oz. Twitter is collapsing, and we see the wizards making "resistance" magic have just been pushing buttons and levers.

News organizations need to establish themselves on the fediverse for two reasons:
First, the fragmentation of the Twitter user base and the failure to establish a Twitter replacement means that no news organization will be able to post exclusively on one site and get the reach it previously had.
Second, if Threads and Bluesky follow through with plans to federate, the fediverse will be the best way to reach those former Twitter users who are now using those platforms.

I've watched two other accounts falter in their commitment to move off X-Twitter. But each time, more people leave X-Twitter permanently.
I still don't think people understand that no platform is going to be the new Twitter. Threads, Bluesky, and the fediverse are alternatives, with each one becoming the landing place for people looking for something that is not available on the other platforms.

Nancy Mace's I Am a Victim Because of My Vote Against McCarthy interview with Kaitlan Collins is something.
Summarizing it: She's a victim. And she is lonely. And she won't have any money coming in.
She's a lonely, broke victim.
Being quite serious, something is really off with Nancy Mace.
I don't know that much about her, so I did some searching. Did some searching and found she was victimized as a teen.
Then I found an article about the McCarthy vote.
“But it’s always been a mixed bag for Representative Mace. I think that’s reflective of her trying to balance herself with her district,” Cowart said.
Mixed bag is right. She ended up on Steve Bannon's show last night with Gaetz.
"Gaetz called Mace a “maverick.” Mace asked Bannon’s viewers for help.
“Because they’re coming after me,” she said before directing them to her campaign website."
Nancy Mace is in trouble. I don't mean political trouble. Something's not right.

One of the most important things about Mastodon and the fediverse is that we do not have the large narrative-skewing accounts creating the story of the day.
I see the purpose in pushing out a narrative that counters the crazy that is the GOP; however, the downside to this is that it narrows the conversation and hampers our ability to truly understand the complexities of the issues that impact us.
Talking points are not solutions.
