well, I also bounced off of it cause it’s utterly painful to play with an n64 controller and at original n64 frame rates. I can’t stress enough how much this feels like a DualShock ps2 game, other than the animations being utterly awful (I don’t think skeletal animations were ever a thing on the N64… maybe in Conker?)

and I think the reason I bounced off of it as a kid is cause of the weird vibe? like, they wanted to do a violent Amiga arcade shooter but in 3D and I love that, but it’s also thoroughly merchandisable for the kids? but also you can murder the aliens you’re supposed to save?
and meanwhile all of the writing is the first dialog pass shit you see if you play prototypes from british dev houses at the time where it’s all very self-referential and tired but not in a successfully comedic way

like, there’s so much wrong with this game and I really hated it as a kid
I’m having a much better time with it on a mildly overclocked FPGA N64 with a modern controller, but this still feels like too much game for the system in both good and bad ways? like a ps2 game someone shoved into an n64
and then there’s just all the weird shit? like I just went to remap my controls in game and the two settings are “expert controls” and “normal controls” with no explanation and normal isn’t the default

and what’s bizarre is reading posts like “oh the Wayland team knows what they’re doing, they worked on xorg!” and all I’ve really seen them practically do is wind down xorg and implement a supposed replacement that’s both fairly batshit in terms of design and doesn’t reliably do what xorg does
and like you I’m stuck — I don’t think there’s a way to make Wayland do what I need, and I don’t think Wayland will become fundamentally different

oh exactly! the only system where I’ve been able to use Wayland mostly problem-free is my Steam Deck, and that’s bespoke hardware and drivers designed to make it work for a specific use case — and Valve’s Wayland developers have recently had to start new technical processes to get utterly basic functionality implemented years after it was proposed

there’s no keyboard-based way to kill it or do anything at all with your computer cause you’re not using gnome and it doesn’t keep any kind of emergency shell alive, so you’d better have had the foresight to set the timeout to 10s and never use anyone else’s computer
oh and hope it’s not a cascade of stop jobs and you didn’t manage to wedge its internal transaction system

I’m abusing this old SSD so hard even a daily fstrim can’t keep up — only mount -o discard (continuous trim) is preserving performance, even though the folk wisdom means people will crop up just to yell at you for enabling it
and yes I’m posting this mostly to see who wants to yell at me about linux shit today
oh and the SSD’s on the kernel queued trim blocklist so you’d imagine performance would be awful
