Today in grafting: I am planting as many tomato plants as I can before it (actually!!!) rains on Monday. This bed is finished, and is what I think is the ultimate layout: two big toms (Taiga, Midnight Sun) plus four smalls (Estonian) with Swanson's medium nugget mulch. If that mulch ever gets discontinued, I will have a crisis on my hands. It's all I use!

Oop, looks like the White River levee in Pacific (south of Auburn, north of Puyallup) failed last night, this time with actual flooding. It really does feel like it's time that this state poured money into updating the levee system. It's not like we didn't know this kind of rain was coming - this winter was forecast to be warmer and wetter.

Some good drone footage here of Hamilton, WA in Skagit County. They're right next to the Skagit river, and just from looking back and forth from Google Maps (thanks to that big ugly building near the bright blue house), as of this morning they're under 3-5ft of water. Bad times. Most of those people will probably have to live somewhere else through this winter, because I doubt anything is getting remediated there soon. Hopefully everyone evacuated.

have you read any Edouard Louis? He writes (autobiographically) about this very issue in France. He's an incredibly gracious person because he absolutely hated the way he was brought up, and the way his family members behaved towards him and others, and could have turned his back on it all, but has instead dedicated himself to trying to understand the underlying motivations and political sabotage of the working class.

this is why I have a hard time believing in dragons as a concept. Meat farming requires a huge amount of resources, and to dedicate it to maintaining even a single dragon seems risky. And even if you can slot an artificial cattle farm industry into your story, presumably the dragons existed before they were domesticated, so what kind of world was that? And why did humans consider it worthwhile to continue the species vs cull them and free up the resources for their own survival?

Looking at the low temperatures on the forecast and I think tomato season is now officially over. I've been topping and cutting back my plants for the last few weeks, but still have plenty of green fruit on the vine. Today I'm thinking: do I pick? Or do I pull the plants and hang them in the garage (as suggested by a few people on the gardening subreddits)?

Last night I started reading Caroline Fraser's MURDERLAND, an exploration of PNW serial killers & geography, and damn, she is so good. I knew she would be though, because her previous book was about the American reality of Laura Ingalls Wilder, and was similarly engrossing. She seems to only write about subjects she has a deep investment in - with MURDERLAND, she grew up on Mercer Island (the island in the middle of Lake Washington) in the 60s/70s. This is in her blood.

My hardest opinion is that cities should just remove private vehicle through-traffic from every arterial street until that street has a bus lane, a protected bike lane, a green belt and a sidewalk wide enough for three people to walk side by side on.
But that is unlikely to happen.

My actual personal opinion of Morris Dancing is that we lost an opportunity when no one decided to upgrade the sticks to swords and make it a true martial art.
And my actual personal opinion of the 8 is that the city needs to (at the very LEAST) give it a clear bus lane at the north end of the route until it hits Broadway. It is absurd that it just stops working at a certain point thanks to people driving private vehicles. Public over private, every time.

the Wild Wales book you're reading sounds interesting by the way, I might pick that up as a companion for the (all set in Wales) Leslie Norris short stories.

Louise Kennedy's Trespasses (2022), Andrea Long Chu's Authority (2025), Joan Didion's Slouching Towards Bethlehem (1968) (not sure if I like it though) plus short fiction collections of Edna O'Brien, Shirley Hazzard, Dorothy Parker, Tessa Hadley, Fiona Macfarlane, Leslie Norris and Claire Boyne. Plus a 2019 issue of The White Review, which has a great essay about the global recycling initiative and it's problem with human labour 👍

The less aesthetic, but just as productive view: beans / beans / tomatoes (including the retaining wall pot crew) and some cucumbers plus extra borage/ tomatoes, beans AND cucumbers.

It's an infrequent job, and I don't even hate doing it, it's just a lot of bending and lifting and digging. Also sometimes beetles climb up my arms while I'm doing it. This is two out of the three that are clear and ready for late season beans and cucumbers and maybe some fall planting?

Just direct sowed the last round of cucumber seeds, even though it almost feels too late. I put in extra of these guys, as they seem particularly good for me (I hate the weird thick skin of mass grown American cucumbers), but also for giving away if I have too many:

I wasn't sure if I liked this fude nib (Jinhao 82) or the ink (Push/Pull's Frozen Brew) but I think this was a skill issue vs a tool issue because in all caps, on cheap composition paper, with a bit of concentration, I think it looks OK 👍

we're doing a big reorganisation of our spare room/office space/hobby storage, so it's going to be a lot of pulling things out, dusting/vacuuming surfaces and putting IKEA furniture/pegboards together. But it should turn out nicely, and I'm looking forward to having a cleaner, more organised room!

I'm curious what definition of relevant you're working from here because the most common use of that word is "to have application", so in my eyes music can absolutely be relevant, especially in social/political situations.

that person is especially out of touch - we live in a streaming age, where all music is relevant all the time, and all the current teens are heavily into 90s fashion and music.

We officially started spring planting today. Managed to get kinnikinnick (x2), English Thyme (x2), a Blue Bog Ice Rosemary, and periwinkle (x6) plants in the ground, plus sowed seed for general wildflowers (in the parking strip), Danish yarrow and California poppies. But best of all: this year I got to transplant a volunteer lavender plant that's been growing in the garden path 😍 I've been waiting two years to do this! I wanted her to be strong! I hope she makes it.
