The US did not attack Autistici/Inventati for fighting for open communication. A/I are also advocating that, true. But the US make it very clear what this is about: It's a strike against far-left politics and anti-fascism. I sure hope the politics of this will not get buried and twisted into a cyberlibertarian narrative of "free internet" or "free speech".

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Se842g--cus

2026-06-20 05:12:45 GMT

When it comes to progressive tech policy, Open-Source is usually included as a (supposed) lever for good. To me OS is much more a distraction from than a helpful answer to the structural problems of the status quo. @npub1l7g…nudk just published a very on-point blog post about just that.

I am looking for CustomROMs for old Google Pixel devices (3, 3a, 5) that are EOL. GrapheneOS would be my OS of choice but they don't host the old files anymore. And LineageOS has some downsides (trusting the maintainer etc) as well. So ... what now?
Do you have any tips? Thx 🙏

You probably heard the popular phrase "It is easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism."
I use it often but have grown to dislike it. At least in contexts where it can have discouraging effects.
I think I want to use a variation of the phrase more often:
"It is much more exciting and inspiring to imagine alternatives to capitalism than thinking about reforms to capitalism."

The #RevLeftRadio podcast did an episode about "technofeudalism". '
It is respectful towards those argueing that capitalism has changed into something qualitatively new. But with care and detail they explain how cloud- or platform-capitalism is (as of now) still a continuation of capitalism.
And there is great practical value for us in the progressive digital policy movement to have a clear understanding of what we are up against (and what is mere rhetorical fluff).

What I would love to hear more about though are truly transformative approaches to the power of these platforms. Switching services, listening to physical media or local alternative projects are good advice. These suggestions will not substantially challenge the power of the platforms though. What will? Socialising them and turning them into democratically governed public services intertwined with existing infrastructure like libraries.

That somebody backed up all the data from Spotify and made it available in raw is a pretty good example for what is actually at the core of platforms business models. It's not the data itself, it's the human behaviour: playlists, interactions, recommendations, ease-of-use and availability. Sure, you can listen to the music without the service, but what makes the service profitable is how it is made available and integrated into our lifes. The music isn't under control. The users are.

Spotify recommended a band to me recently. One song I really, really (really) liked. I couldn't find any information about the band so I grew suspicious and it seems to be one of many, many "bands" that consist of artificially generated media only.
Now I feel dumb, naïve and taken advantage of. There are reasons why I still use Spotify but this experience may be why I eventually leave the service for one that guarantees not to have "AI"-slob.

If a book is claiming to be critical of so-called "AI" and feels the need to include "AGI" but includes it in any other way but completely dismantling and ridiculing the nonsense that is "AGI": The book basically disqualifies itself.
Covering "AGI" with any ambiguity simply says that the author is willing to sacrifice analytic clarity for appeasing "AI" hypers.

But: Wasn't "AI" supposed to be the end of human lawyers and medical personnel. Aren't these the jobs threatened by "AI"? In August Sam Altman even called for "AI confidentiality" similar to "medical and legal privileges"

OpenAI stopped letting ChatGPT generate text that humans would perceive as legal or medical advice.
I may eat my words but I strongly feel like this single decision will be looked back at the moment the "AI" hype collapsed. The hype is over. Now comes the time of collapse and downfall.
The price will - as in 2008/2009 - be paid by the collective. And the same grifters that cheered for "AI" will be back soon with new speculative FOMO tech.

What is missing is a structural critique of technological progress and "innovation" within capitalism and the limited effect of regulation in face of conflicting economic dynamics. This is especially unfortunate because the book does reference the luddite-movement and authors like Jathan Sadowski. When it comes to the bigger picture though, their recommendations fail to move beyond the tried-and-true formula which is: regulation. They - again - deserve praise for stating that there is no regulatory AI loophole and remind us that corporations often demand new regulation to avoid following the rules that are already in place.

2025-11-03 10:24:46 GMT

Sadly, there is a "but". It awaits in the final chapter where Bender and Hanna include a "what do we do now"-section. To give praise where praise is due: They actually do recommend to simply not use "AI" and they recommend to ridicule people and corporations that do. With these suggestions they already move beyond 90 % of the critical-AI-books.

The book absolutely does deliver when it comes to deconstructing the hype. The majority of the book carefully disassembles the false promises of "AI" in education, science, the justice system or within social services. You will get a good understanding of the specific and narrow capabilities of the technologies behind "AI" (machine learning, pattern recognition, content synthesis). And you will have a good understanding of why the current use of "AI" so non-sensical, misplaced and dangerous.

The German (the only one I can speak to with confidence) judiciary is full of people filtered to fit a certain social group/political orientation. Few are willing to reflect the role their actions play in maintaining our racist, patriarchal society. And it shows in their debates about digital tools which are looked at with little criticism as ways to manage workloads instead of individual justice.
(But again: What justice is there with unjust laws to begin with?)

After reading [@Mer__edith](https://mastodon.world/@Mer__edith ) 's essay in The Economist I was baffled by the discrepancy between the factual analysis and the policy demands derived from it: Brilliant and precise awareness of what is wrong is met by unambitious calls for "a-little-less-terrible".
I am happy and thankful that @npub1l7g…nudk took the time to write down her thoughts. I very much agree: This specific kind of criticism is systemic to how progressive policy people deal with current issues.

Dear leftists,
please be cautious what framings you adapt and boost. Example: The German Minister of State for Culture (Wolfram Weimer) is calling for breaking up Google to safeguard "freedom of speech".
Wolfram Weimer founded the right-wing outlet "Cicero" and regularly pushes right-wing or right-conservative positions. It should be absolutely obvious from his political profile what "freedom of speech" means in this context: A shift of the overton window further to the right.

Every time individual violence erupts we hear the same reactions: "Violence is never an answer or a solution. We have to debate civilly about our collective issues etc". It's the safe thing to say.
It's also lazy. Systemic violence exists. It is invisible but shows its face when health care is denied, hate speech is safeguarded by "free speech" and police violence is justified as "law and order".
If you say "violence is not the answer" at least admit that you are fine with systemic violence.

Don't eat that nonsense.

2025-09-10 18:00:19 GMT

https://justiz.hamburg.de/resource/blob/1096416/e5c06efe8a5cd8027e467f916a8304ee/17-k-2550-23-urteil-vom-8-4-25-data.pdf

When you talk with people about technology listen closely to their perspective: Are they analysing the mechanical working of a technology? Or are they analysing how the technology is used and what its social purpose is?
To me that distinction has become more and more apparent and it helped me understanding why people can talk about the same thing (e.g. so-called "AI") and still come to totally different results.
Some are mere mechanics.
Others are luddites.

There is a lot of talk about the "AI bubble" bursting. The metaphor however is deeply misleading. There will be so much more than water and soap when it bursts. I am thankful that @npub1l7g…nudk took the time to write this excellent piece about the devastation the end of this hype-cycle will leave behind:

Given the spectacular failure of Open AIs new ChatGPT version (ChatGPT 5) it's easy to ridicule it. Brian Merchant however has a good and sadly sobering point:
"If we wake up to millions of addicted and deluded AI chatbot users, students incapable of finishing their homework without help from an app, and automation software that surveils and immiserates workers, each hurriedly installed on the top layer of our society, well, the joke will have been on all of us."

One of the most irritating things about the left activist groups I work in is the illogical mismatch between how Tesla and how so-called "AI" is treated.
Tesla is shunned upon, physical resistance against individual cars or factories is welcomed and the ecological and social impact is broadly discussed.
"AI" however is seen as a neutral tool, used broadly and joyfully and criticism is shrugged off as technicalities.
I really struggle to address that effectively.

When that happens, bailouts for private companies may be on the table once more.
That may be a moment to prepare for.
Such windows of collaps and bailout can be used to not just fight the bailouts but demand redistribution of economic power and wealth on a genereal societal level.

It currently looks like FOMO is getting EU-member states into investing into "AI" infrastructure right at the end of the hype bubble which could lead to huge public-private-partnership investments into material infrastructure that are build to generate profit but will disappoint greatly.

I do not agree with your characterisation of "the left". While your admittedly cheeky description certainly fits to certain groups (I personally would assign them to green-liberal camps but that's useless semantics), these groups by no means describe the organized left I work with. I do not disagree with your grim assessment of the status quo though. Organizing with other dedicated transformative anti-capitalists in your neighborhood is the best thing I can recommend.
