@nprofile…dyu0 if you are visiting the Vienna over thisaway (Europe) and haven't been yet, you are in for a treat. There is no Sunday shopping though, so get what you need ahead of time. I was thinking about this- I know a lot of us here are supporting projects at an individual level (one-time or recurring donations) but how can we support collectively as a group and have something that is sustainable, since individual donations are only as reliable as our discretionary income?

I have a transparent greenhouse with a floor on my balcony (it's dark so can't take a pic) with metal shelves inside and frost fleece double wrapped around the shelves themselves. I haven't peeked in for a while since I don't want to let out too much warmer air. It's in a sunny spot so hopefully things will be okay. It's mostly carnivores and I expect to lose a lot of the traps but as long as the rhizomes make it they should be fine (hopefully).

#39c3 hint, if you think you might need to take your assistive mobility gear to Congress and are unsure about it (pack weight, bulk, etc.) it's still a good idea to take it, even if you are not a daily user. Canes, crutches, walkers, etc. are available in Hamburg during business hours but it's no fun having to hunt something down last-minute and probably getting whatever is just available in-store as it might not be the best fit. Also test your gear before going (I learned this the hard way).

FYI: KOReader just got a version update to 2025.08 nicknamed "Parasol" and the inline/OTA update for my Kobo Libra 2 ereader went fine. It should reach F-Droid at some point soon for Android-based devices (Boox, older Tolino, etc.). Wallabag seems fine with the update though I didn't check all of the installed plugins.

Maybe a long shot, but has anyone gotten KOReader and Nickelmenu running on a converted Tolino to Kobo ereader? Originally branded as a Tolino Shine Color and currently running as a Kobo Clara Colour. Usually it's straightforward on native Kobo (Linux) and works after some jumping through hoops on older Tolinos (Android) but this one has me stuck. It's pretty much Kobo, but not all? I have already visited GitHub, Mobileread and e-reader-forum (de).

Checking in on the bog that I replanted on the 16th with a digital magnifier to see how it is settling in. Seems like it's doing okay (most sundew traps are progressing except for a couple and the Venus Flytrap seeds seem to have set). Some moss has burnt tips like it did in the old container and not sure if it's the lighting, dry conditions or something else yet.

Packing away the winter greenhouses and acclimating some of the outdoor plants to springlike weather fully outdoors (Zone 7b). We still have some freezes so I kept the protection fabric out and will cover them at night (and they will probably be moving inside at times as needed). The thin white frost cover doubles as a sun shade for the afternoon. I'm leaving the dead traps on until I divide/repot which should hopefully be next week.

Whew! I knew this was going to be a tricky replanting and it was but went more smoothly than I'd expected. This mini bog started out in 2023 as a random throwing things together with different Sundew seed stalks, moss and some Butterworts in a Tupperware-type container using coconut coir as the growing medium and I actually didn't expect it to survive. It seemed to (mostly) do okay and it was time to move it to a larger container.

I'm preparing another batch of growing medium (mix of peat and perlite). If you are new to growing carnivores, you might not know yet that the medium should be soaked and rinsed before planting. If you plant in dry medium and then water it, it may repel the water (see pic 3 where it is floating on top of the water). I'm using one of @nprofile…nssy 's fermentation jars and periodically shaking it, breaking up barky chunks and letting it set in a warm room.

A change of plans resulted in me starting spring replanting this week instead of later, but I prepared the Venus Flytrap seedlings from 2023 for their first year outdoors (see link for original seeding). The germination cups were getting kind of ick anyway. There are also some Pinguicula Weser/Butterwort divisions in the second pic I replanted today. Most carnivorous plants do best when replanting while still dormant.

I have an Android (and Nokia/HMD) question. After updating to Android 14 my Nokia G42 5G lost AAC codec over Bluetooth support, which downgraded some of my headphones as they are falling back to SBC (more noticeable on some headphones than others and these are without aptX* support, which is still working fine). Developer Options doesn't change it. Has anyone else seen this? I already factory defaulted the phone and recently updated to the April 2024 patch with no change.

Repotting day for the Venus Flytraps planted from seed in 2022. They seem about halfway out of dormancy. The leaves are starting to stand up and there is new growth, but most of the traps are not fully active yet. They were pretty easy to work with this time. Most of them went into a larger pot, but I put some in smaller pots to give to friends this spring. The last pic is right when they were removed from the old pot.

@npub198t…hasj question on the defense end. When inside the room the occupant usually has a deadbolt and worst case a chair under the door handle (depending on type). What do you think could help secure the room/items in the room when the occupant isn't there?

A different thread made me think of this (GL Teapot in BeOS). It's probably too silly for the original thread, so here you go (and it spins to a bouncy little tune in the video as a nice bonus) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xCE5-ytpq8Q

I just realized that my ereader case was magnetic enough to stick to the refrigerator. This is so much easier for cooking than using the phone or tablet.

About a year and a half ago I had to "chop and prop" (cut/propagate) this Sinocrassula due to stem rot (see the post about it on my old account here https://mastodon.social/@chillicampari/108223295472840443 )
It took a while with a few false starts and there were times I almost threw it away thinking it was dead but I'm glad I stuck with it and here's what it looks like now. This time they grew a lot of air roots which looks a bit weird but it seems stable.

This year I am trying a dormancy setup for the carnivorous plants in a cold storage room next to a wall that should get close to freezing in a few weeks (growing zone 7b) or whenever it stays cold throughout the day. It's a bit earlier than I would usually do, but I want to see how they adjust before fully committing to the setup. The lighting is made for hibernation (Parus overwintering LED) but it's the first year I've used them.

Okay this is really cool. Just to see what it was like I installed InkBox OS 2.0 (based on Alpine Linux and using the QT framework) on my Kobo Nia*.
There are some very neat things about it, but what I really like so far is the storefront style integration with Project Gutenberg (public domain books) so you can get to reading right away.
* The Nia has had some hardware changes, so using the patch release for my hardware.

Woohoo! The Venus Flytrap seedlings (planted August 14) are looking good so far. These first two leaves (cotyledon) are non-carnivorous. The moss I planted with them is looking good also. There was more algae with this setup than I was comfortable with so I made a cinnamon water infusion a few days ago and sprayed it on the growing cups and it helped (and seems to have been fine with the seedlings).

Re-potted the Sempervivium (Hauswurz) today into a balcony box to give them some more room. The boxes don't always have drainage holes so I drilled some. The soil mix for these are Seramis Kakteen for the lowest layer, a mix of sandy succulent soil and Lechuza-Pon (I ran out of Seramis) for the center and a small layer of Lechuza-Pon on the top. I didn't remove all of the older soil to keep most of it together but loosened the roots a bit.

Venus Flytrap seed collection day.
This time instead of cutting the entire stalks I only clipped the pods and a bit of stem as I read that they reclaim nutrients from the stalks. I took a quick look using a digital magnifier to make sure everything looked ok. When collecting the seeds it's helpful to use a container with a rim since they can go flying pretty easily. Toothpicks can help to lift the seed cover.

It looks like I got home in just the right time as most of these Venus Flytrap seed pods are ready for seed collection. A couple of pods have already dropped their seed so I tracked down as many as I could find and put them in the refrigerator for now. It was indoors near a window while I was away, but after I clip the pods I'll need to transition it to outdoors on the balcony again.
