If you have some image in your mind that Assange is a noble fighter for freedom and is being persecuted for releasing the dirty laundry of powerful nation states, all I can say is...
The propaganda has worked on you. That is the image that has been carefully cultivated to garner your support.
None of us can know all the real details, but I know that story is not it. There is plenty of evidence over the years that he is in service to Russian interests, if you look.
