Why 25 Heifers are Better Than 10 as Replacement Options
Keeping more heifer candidates allows for multiple culling opportunities. Instead of guessing which heifers will perform at weaning, evaluate them through breeding success, conception rates and calving performance.
What do you want the future of your cow herd to look like?
Beef cow slaughter fell by 19% in 2024, and another 17% in 2025, as producers held on to cows past their prime to get “just one more calf” out of them. So far this year, cow slaughter is falling even faster, and it is on track to drop below levels we’ve not seen in a very long time.
Meanwhile, producers continue sacrificing their younger, better-genetic heifers as market prices are just too good to pass up. Keeping older genetics in less productive cows while selling young heifers will eventually bite us in the backside and lower the productivity of our herds.
As you begin planning for the future of your herd, I’d like to suggest a different retention mindset than we’ve used in the past: If you are going to retain heifers, let’s put enough selection pressure on them to make sure we are only keeping the good ones.
Common replacement strategy
If a producer needs 10 heifer replacements to go back into their herd, the most common strategy is, at weaning, to select 10 or 11 nice-looking heifers they think will make good cows.
Related:Why cheese is being marketed as a new protein bar
Then they plan a supplemental nutrition program to make sure they reach the desired weight for breeding to get good conception rates. The 11th heifer is a hedge just in case one doesn’t get bred.
It’s a strategy that usually works well, but often by sinking significant expense into developing the heifers to ensure they breed on time.
But how do you know if you’ve picked the “best” replacements? Did they simply look good at weaning? How do you really know they were the best ones for your herd?
New retention strategy
In a recent heifer retention workshop, I asked producers what conception rate they desired for their heifer group. Most responded 90% or better, and one said 100%.
I asked if they thought I was crazy for being happy with only 50%.
Why would anyone be content if only 50% of the heifers you invested in were bred? Well, as any good economist always says, it depends. But if my heifer development enterprise has kept my costs low, and Mother Nature has taken the guesswork out of the selection process for me, 50% could be a tremendous success.
How many heifers to keep
I’d like to suggest that if a producer needs 10 heifer replacements, rather than keeping 10 or 11, consider keeping 25. It sounds like a lot.
My good friend Jordan Thomas, beef reproductive physiologist at the University of Missouri, likes to call those 25 “heifer candidates.”
Heifer development should be viewed as an enterprise with multiple off-ramps where candidates are continually scrutinized and culled. Rather than picking only once (at weaning), heifer candidates should be evaluated at weaning, prebreeding tract scores, bull turn in, pregnancy check and before calving. At each phase, selection pressure should be applied.
Related:Riegel Dairy makes more than milk
In addition, rather than using the normal 60- to 90-day breeding season, heifers should be given a very short window to become bred, such as 30 days or even less. This way, Mother Nature can select the heifers most suited to your environment and most likely to stay in the herd the longest.
Value of gain vs. cost of gain
Right about now, most of you are thinking, “How could that possibly be an efficient system if so many heifers are unsuccessful?” It depends on what you label as success.
A heifer candidate that is culled for being open or any other reason along the way can still be a success if she is profitable because her cost of gain is less than the value of gain.
A spring-born calf weaned in the fall is normally at a lower value during the heavy fall calf runs. Later marketing period off-ramps often show improved prices and substantial value of gain achieved.
For instance, an 845-pound open heifer being sold the following August is often at the yearly high for heavyweight feeders.
Related:Small dairy bets big on growing niche milk market
Bottom line
A heifer development enterprise should be viewed as multiple marketing opportunities to create flexibility in your system and help you identify the replacements that will take your herd to the next level for years to come.

I got Ken, 11 1/2 years ago from AmericasVetDog in New York. I spent eight years in a wheelchair and he did everything from push me through doorways to pick up something as small as a credit card off the ground. He got my phone for me when it would ring he would get a bottle of water out of the refrigerator and bring it to me. He was the best thing that anyone could ever be blessed with. And I lost him last week. You know I've lost my parents, but it does not compare to the heartbreak that you have when you lose someone that is so close to you and gives their undivided attention to you 24 hours a day seven

Beef & Breedin’ Potential
Highland cattle are tremendous beasts for producin’ top-quality beef. The meat’s highly prized cause it’s leaner than standard beef, packed wi’ protein, an lower in cholesterol tae boot. Folk’ll pay guid money for proper Highland beef if it’s raised right.
They dae take a wee bit longer tae finish an reach butcher weight compared tae commercial breeds like Angus cattle, but ye’re tradin’ speed for quality. In the end, the premium price usually makes up for the extra wait.
Agritourism:
Because they’re calm-natured an look absolutely iconic wi’ aw that shaggy hair an sweeping horns, Highlands are brilliant for agritourism. Folk love takin’ photos wi’ them, feedin’ them by hand, an walkin’ roond farm tours. Petting zoos, educational farms, an visitor experiences can pull in a tidy wee income if ye run it proper.
Local Mentorship & Resources
Before ye start yer ain “fold” — that’s the proper term for a herd o’ Highland cattle — it’s wise tae speak wi’ experienced breeders first instead o’ chargiin’ in blind.
The American Highland Cattle Association is worth joinin’ if ye’re serious aboot bloodlines, registration, an proper breed standards.
Ye can also visit established East Tennessee folds like Piney Highlands or Elm Hollow Farm tae see firsthand how seasoned breeders manage grazin’, shelter, feedin’, an herd health. That kind o’ practical knowledge is worth more than half the nonsense ye’ll read online.

2026-05-21 04:23:16 GMT

Raisin’ Scottish Highland cattle in East Tennessee’s become right popular, an it’s a braw wee venture if ye ken whit ye’re daein. Them big shaggy beasts wi’ the thick double coats an calm nature settle in awfy well tae the hills o’ Tennessee, but dinnae fool yersel — the humid summer heat’ll batter them if ye dinnae keep on top o’ shade, water, an fly control.
Climate & Heat Management
Even though they come fae Scotland, Highland coos handle East Tennessee weather better than folk expect. Their heavy coats keep the cauld oot in winter, but they also shield the beasts fae the scorchin’ summer sun.
Shade:
Every pasture needs proper shade — trees if ye’ve got them, shelters if ye dinnae. Leave them standin’ in open heat aw day an ye’re askin’ for trouble.
Water:
Fresh water needs tae be flowin’ constant. Noo and then a pond, wallow, or sprinkler setup disnae hurt either. A thirsty Highland in July’s a miserable creature.
Groomin’ & Health:
Heat stress an flies are the big enemies. Ye need tae watch them close through peak summer. If ye slack aff, the flies’ll torment the poor beasts rotten.
Land & Grazin’ Requirements
East Tennessee’s full o’ rich grassland an rollin’ hills, near perfect for Highlands, but ye still need tae manage the stock proper.
Acreage:
Usually ye’re lookin’ at roughly 2 tae 5 acres per coo dependin’ on the pasture quality an how much rain ye get.
Foragin’:
Highlands are hardy wee scrappers. They’ll chew through weeds, briars, an brush that other cattle turn their noses up at, which keeps the pasture cleaner without half the effort.
Herd Dynamics & Temperament
Highland cattle are famous for bein’ gentle, clever, an easy enough tae handle if ye treat them right.
Maternal Instinct:
The coos are first-class mothers. Calvin’s usually easy, an the wee calves come oot covered in thick hair ready tae face a cold snap straight aff.
Horns:
Those grand curvin’ horns look bonnie, but dinnae get careless. A startled Highland can swing its heid fast an crack gates, fences, or a careless handler. Build wide clearances intae yer pens an handlin’ areas or ye’ll regret it.

Highland Cows and their Diet
Highland cattle are primarily raised on a forage-based diet, requiring very little to no grain to thrive due to their high foraging ability and hardy metabolism. They require 80% to 100% forage hay in their daily diet.
Grain and Nutritional Requirements Grain Intake:
Grain is typically not required for maintenance. If used during winter, drought, or for finishing, grain should be limited to 0.5% to 1.0% of their body weight. Total Dry Matter Intake:
Highland cattle eat roughly 2% to 2.5% of their body weight in dry matter per day.
Protein Levels:
A total diet of 10% to 12% crude protein is adequate for most conditions.
Mineral Requirements:
Free-choice minerals are essential, specifically a mix that provides calcium, phosphorus (generally aim for a 2:1 Ca:P ratio), copper, zinc, and selenium.
Energy Levels:
While they can thrive on low-quality forage, lactating cows need higher energy levels (about 60% Total Digestible Nutrients, or TDN).
Seasonal Feeding Strategies in the Summer/Spring:
High-quality pasture is sufficient and can support 100% of their nutritional needs.
Winter:
They require good quality hay and mineral supplements. If hay is poor quality, it may be necessary to supplement with 0.5% of their body weight in grain or high-quality silage. Finishing (for meat):
If finishing on grain to achieve faster growth or higher marbling, a, 1000-lb steer might receive 3–5 lbs of grain per day, though this can vary.
Avoid Excessive Alfalfa:
Lucerne (Alfalfa) hay should be fed in moderation, as its high protein and calcium can cause urinary calculi (kidney stones) in bulls and steers.
Water:
With all cattle, access to clean, fresh water is crucial.

RAISING HIGHLAND CATTLE FOR BEEF
Raising Highland Cattle for beef is an excellent idea for niche, grass-fed markets or homesteading, but not for high-volume commercial production. They produce lean, high-quality, and flavorful meat with low input costs.
Why It’s a Good Idea (Pros)High-Quality Beef: - Highland beef is renowned for being lean, tender, and nutritious, with lower cholesterol than many other breeds.
- Foraging Ability: They are exceptionally hardy, browsing on brush, weeds, and rough forage, reducing the need for expensive feed.
- Low Maintenance: They have few health issues and excellent calving ease, making them suitable for beginners.
- Niche Marketability: They are ideal for direct-to-consumer sales, farmer's markets, and farm-gate sales, often fetching premium prices.
Why It Might Not Be (Cons)
- Slow Growth Rates: Highlands take longer to reach processing weight compared to breeds like Angus, making them less profitable for high-volume beef production.
- Smaller Yields: Being a smaller breed, they yield less meat per animal.
- Horn Management: All Highlands have horns, requiring careful handling to ensure safety.
- Less Marbling: While flavorful, they often have less fat, which can result in a leaner product that may require longer, slow-cooking methods

Bitcoin outlook as of May 9, 2026
As of 2100cst, May 9, 2026, Bitcoin is sitting around the $80,000 range after a volatile few months. The broad picture is this: the long-term structure still leans bullish, but the easy-money euphoric phase is gone. Bitcoin is now trading more like a macro asset tied to liquidity, Federal Reserve policy, institutional ETF flows, and geopolitical stress.
Here’s the battlefield right now:
* Bulls point to sustained ETF inflows, shrinking exchange supply, and increasing institutional exposure from firms and banks.
* Bears point to slowing momentum, higher global interest rates, war risk, and weakening retail participation.
Spot Bitcoin ETFs continue pulling in serious capital. That is the single strongest bullish argument in 2026. Institutional demand did not disappear after the 2024 halving cycle; it matured.
At the same time, price action has become far less explosive than the retail mania years. Analysts increasingly describe 2026 as a “grind upward” environment instead of a vertical rocket launch.
My assessment:
Short-term outlook (next 30–90 days):
* Probable range: $72K–$92K
* Strong resistance remains psychologically near prior highs.
* Any Federal Reserve hint of rate cuts could ignite another leg upward.
* Any major geopolitical escalation or stock-market correction likely drags Bitcoin down temporarily with broader risk assets.
Medium-term outlook (late 2026):
* Bull case: $120K–$150K
* Extreme bull case: $200K+
* Bear case: retest of $60K–$65K
The key thing most retail investors misunderstand is this:
Bitcoin is no longer primarily a “crypto rebel asset.” It is increasingly becoming institutional digital collateral. That changes its behavior. Slower moves. Bigger capital. Less chaos than 2021. More correlation to liquidity conditions.
The market is also maturing psychologically. Retail traders still chase meme coins while large funds quietly accumulate BTC exposure through regulated products. That divergence matters.
One caution, and this is important:
There is still massive leverage in the crypto ecosystem. If traditional markets crack hard, Bitcoin can still drop 20–30% frighteningly fast. People who say “Bitcoin only goes up now” are talking nonsense.
The long-term thesis remains intact because:
* Supply is mathematically capped.
* Institutional access is easier than ever.
* Sovereign debt globally keeps expanding.
* Younger investors increasingly trust hard digital assets more than fiat systems.
But volatility is not gone. Not even close.
Current live pricing sources place BTC around the low-$80K area today.
