The USA was designed with features to restrain democracy. Some of them have been removed over the years, like state legislatures choosing Senators.

Democracy as currently practiced is broken, yes. But Kings had some major problems of their own.
There were too many wars brought about not by national interest, but by an excess of noblemen who needed land and territory to rule over.
And that system rotted in extended peacetime, when social climbing rather than battlefield prowess decided who rose in the hierarchy.
Nobility systems were designed by and for war, and could not thrive without it.

What do you think of the fact that democracy is always held out today as the ultimate ideal to which we must strive? If things are not going well, the answer is always more voting by more people in larger polities. Never considering that maybe voting doesn't scale to infinity.
Whereas the ancient Greeks saw democracy as the degenerate state of a Republic just before it crashed into a dictatorship (or got conquered.)

The Japanese had most of the same noble culture around the same time. I think a lot of it was about the weaponry of that time.
Armor was very effective. The movies underestimate armor by a lot. The good armor also cost more than a peasant would make in a lifetime.
Mastering either armored cavalry warfare or the longbow was a full time job. The knight needed a large crew to keep him in action.

I think chivalry was interesting, and misunderstood today.
It was a practical thing that only applied to nobles.
You knew that the same families on the enemy side would be there after the war. If you made personal blood enemies out of them, revenge would be taken, against you or your sons.
So therefore you ransomed prisoners rather than killing them. You did not rape noblewomen (peasants were fair game.)
It was more about strategy than morality.

During feudalism also, the state was about WHAT IS. Physical reality. Which was, if noblemen with horses and swords did not defend the land, someone was going to take it over.
The whole domain of WHAT SHOULD BE - morality, altruism, justice - was assigned to the church. The church had all the soft power. The state had the hard power. The two respected each other even if they did not always get along.

From what I've read, feudalism at its high point had a social contract. The landlord was obligated to provide for the peasants, even in bad times.
There were a lot of church holidays, which nobody dared to touch - no having to work on a holiday in those days!
Usury was illegal and there was a large commons for people to graze their animals on.
Then, ahem, someone brought in usury, and the commons was privatized, and it all went to hell. Sound familiar?

IMHO this is the basic problem with immigration in the West. We have a handful of true assholes that want to exploit the immigrants economically. They want desperate people.
Then we have a larger group of soft-hearted altruists who say "we must help those people" without understanding their culture or values.
If you take in refugees from a social disaster elsewhere, you will get some of the bad people who caused the disaster. They will cause one here too.

Rome's OLD organizing principle had them bringing non-Romans in as slaves. And although the slaves had no political rights, they had their culture, their language, and their reproductive apparatus.
Rome was largely overrun by its own slaves. When Rome's politics got shaky, suddenly the citizens discovered they were outnumbered by people who didn't like them too much.

If you had an original IBM PC and a modern laptop, and wanted to move a file from one to the other, you'd soon discover you cannot do it. They are different species with no compatible port or drive.

iTunes was the first offender. It would happily grab your existing collection, even searching for it. But within iTunes itself, you had to click a detail page to see the location of the music file.
Google Docs indexes by recently opened or gives you a search prompt. It doesn't default to a files and directories view.
MS Office is going to "everything in the cloud" as fast as they can get away with.
None of these things make it easy to store your data locally.

We also have free network services.
We do not have good free end user tools. This is mainly because devs are wired differently from most users and write code for other devs.

I tried out the Whisper translation system and it's impressive. It nailed transcription of phone calls. Then I held an AM radio up to my laptop with a Spanish language radio broadcast, and got a perfectly readable English transcript out of it.
There are vast audio and video archives that have so far been accessible only if you can afford to hire professional researchers. Those can all be made searchable now.
That is the real AI revolution.

The problem with deflationary money is you cannot borrow it safely. You might end up having to pay back 10x more valuable money. You cannot lend it safely either because the collateral might not be worth the value of the bitcoin.
Yes the USD inflates, but it has historically inflated at a predictable rate, so borrowing and lending USD works.
You could not base the whole world's money on BTC. Each country creating its own token, could work.

Deflationary currency strangles economic growth and enriches idle hoarders. BTC has to be worst currency in that respect.
Currency that can be infinitely inflated is also bad.
What we really need is money that is tied to real world wealth, so it can grow or shrink with the economy. I.e. it's a ticket to buy something. You have "tickets" for whatever is for sale. Funds hold pools of tickets, and shares in the funds are your currency.

Bitcoin you say? It is lousy transaction money. It has intermediaries who charge high fees - much higher than conventional banking. It has limited bandwidth. Most of the plans for fixing that consist of building a fractional reserve banking system on top of it.
It exists for two reasons: crime, and people who think they will become the new elite by getting in early.
If Bitcoin is the best money that humans can create then humans do not have much of a future.

When I needed an iPod interface to my 2002 Acura I was able to buy one. Some people even sell video-in interfaces to the 2007 Acura I have now. Never bought one because the display resolution is not that high.

Checks are still used in the USA. Bank transfers are at least overnight here. Banks are promoting something called Zelle to work around that. I can pay all my monthly bills without a check but for random bills they are useful.

The Reliable Power 3KW one seems ok. I have one of those and its output is definitely floating. Not much passive cooling so it's going to make noise if you put it under much load.
The Volfvert is also isolated output and has a good finned case. I have to draw over a kW from it for a while to get the fan to go.

Just recently helped an older person with a flip phone. Could not get texts. Kept saying memory full even though only one text in the inbox. I read the manual and said check outbox and saved. Example, radio on ships became a big deal in the early 20th century. Japan built a radio school, made their own radios, trained operators and repair people, and mastered the art of coordinating ship movements by radio.

Solar power is getting pretty good now, and it definitely blunts the daytime peak. In a lot of places, air conditioners directly powered by rooftop solar make a lot of sense.
But you're not going to run base load on batteries any time soon, especially if you want AI everywhere.
Build one each IFR and MSR, see which works best in the real world, and then go big. Manhattan Project style: go down all paths at once.

Voluntary socialism is not a competitive economic system. If it was, it could "overgrow" capitalism. That has not happened.

I've read about the period between the first and second Russian revolutions, for example. Most of the factions did not want state power. The one that did eventually seized it, without much shooting.

The Accord will let you go hands free for 15 second. Eating while driving is easy in that car. There is some sort of attention monitor but it's not super aggressive. I have only rented them. The built-in cellular modem, along with the lack of any deals or discounts, has deterred me from getting one. They do get good mileage. The hybrids are very smooth (series hybrid below freeway speed) while the gas one stops and starts.

I just drove a rented 2025 Accord up and down California. It has the similar almost-automatic feature. It will give you about 15 seconds of hands-off before it starts complaining. It's also not quite reliable enough to feel comfortable letting the car drive.
The automatic speed control does reduce the effort quite a bit. Slightly more automation and people would zone out, and die when the car makes a mistake. (That already happens to Tesla drivers.)

Despite all the death and destruction, Israel has NOT decisively won the war in Gaza. The recent disaster with seven killed demonstrates that. They are in the sort of quagmire America had in Afghanistan. Except they cannot just fly out like Biden did, because the problem is right next door!

Cities with public transit and limited parking are already inherently totalitarian. I'm really glad I didn't live in one when COVID hit, because there would have been no way to avoid every day exposure to it. No, an N95 will not guarantee your safety if you are in a bus or subway car full of sick people. Better than nothing but not safe.
You want freedom? Live outside the city! Yes you need a car. You can still go in to visit. In a city an ebike is probably the freest mode of transport.

Okay how's this for a plausible alternative. It looks like an Amazon truck, but the side looks like an Amazon Locker. I.e. it has a bunch of pockets that can individually unlock. That rolls up to wherever you are, you get a notice, and you go get your stuff. Has the advantage that your package can come to you at work if you want it to.
There is a solution here, just as there was for sea transport, but it requires a full rethink of how things currently work.

The old NYC taxi industry was a good example. The taxi licenses were crazy expensive so you had a class of "taxi landlords" that rented the licenses to the actual cabdrivers and robbed them blind.
Once you have robot trucks, scale container shipping down to the individual package. Put the batteries in larger containers and stack them as needed. Robots should load both batteries and packages.
As with container shipping, the whole process has to be rethought.

These things exist in Hollywood, I've seem them. They are a box on wheels. It stops, you get a message, you go out and unlock with your phone and grab your food. Generation 1 is going to be exactly that. You go fetch from the curb.
Walking robots that can drop a package on the porch will be generation 2.
As for Tesla, they were basically a carbon credit laundering scheme. They managed to make Teslas a status symbol for a while, until they weren't.

Specifically thinking of LA area here. It is obvious that the people who run this city are not capable of fixing the transit in any reasonable time. Yes there is some, and people who happen to live and work around it use it, but otherwise it's faster to drive despite the traffic.
Robotaxis can be deployed quickly without any infrastructure building. Technologies like that usually win out, whether they are a utopian ideal or not.
Just move the charging location.

So what is a solution to a city transit problem? Even cities with conventional mass transit have a lot of traffic. Robotaxis solve the end to end problem without having 90% of the cars idle and hogging space at any given time.
Yes you will still want a metro to take people from residential areas to work and back. Robotaxis are a better solution than private cars for everything else.
Robot buses would be useful for taking people to concerts and the like.

Human-driven taxis are never going to replace private cars, unless you bring in a servile class to drive them.
Robot taxis could eventually be the primary mode of transport in cities. You could then have smaller parking lots, and charge people to park.
Robot taxis could either seat four with hard partitions between them so people would feel safe sharing, or they could be half-wide and share the lanes.
They can form convoys when they are all going to the same area, reducing traffic.

There needs to be a law requiring any data sharing from a car to be disclosed, visible to the end user, and able to be turned off entirely.
It should also be illegal to disable other things that are not technically dependent on data sharing if data sharing is disabled.

So why can't these charging lots be somewhere outside the city? Or at the top of a mall's parking structure, which is presumably empty at night? Electric robot taxis are a potentially green alternative to LA's parking nightmare, but they need to not be a nuisance or people are going to mess with them.
