Regarding "it crashes" it seems the driver has a bug in its suspend method. I am not sure why the driver is not proper initialized after this on reboot.[1]
You had a complete power-off before rebooting?
I'd like to defend BSD here: Yes, it's more picky about hardware that works. But: It's totally the fault of hardware manufacturers who have no common hardware/software interface and insists throwing new hardware (chips) on the market as if there is no tomorrow. With some laptop brands, the thing is even called the same but contains wildly different chipsets a year later.
That's a race only a big community can win. And even Linux is struggling. I almost bought a new laptop that, it turned out some weeks later, would not have been working with Linux.
[1] One theory: BSD might automatically blacklist drivers that crashed in certain situations. But this is just speculation. I haven't run a BSD for a loooong time. I need to get back to it. Linux has become such a drag, and before debugging HW support problems with systemd interfering, I'd rather debug them with BSD.

Look, I just don't really know. I am not talking about a KZ style 1000 Volts, 20 Ampere electric fence, but one like the ones used by farmers to keep the cows in. Totally different settings, I have never seen dead chipmunks lying around them, because (a) they don't sustain the current to kill and (b) the ground is actually the earth and the chipmunks won't be able to make contact with the earth.
But I grant you, research is required.

Regarding search: I never do it, I subscribe a couple of hash tags.

Naja.

They are now a different org. They still support the free software community. They maintain the legal framework you found so missing. And they still got the same "DNA".
I get why you need to see them as something totally different in order to be able to paint the FSF deep black.
But let me point out, the FSFE was founded in 2001 as a legally independent local embodiment of the free software movement and only declared themselves as "unable to collaborate with the FSF" in 2021.
That's not, let me point this out, a totally different movement as far as the aspect of supporting the free software movement is concerned. "We cannot talk to RMS any more" does not mean "we have now discovered a legally and philosophically totally different way to do free software".

> They could also just help with it, by e.g. providing a legal framework for FOSS orgs.
The FSF is in the *free software* "business". They're providing, I'd say, sufficient legal framework, where the specifically European contributions comes from the FSFe.
A lot of legal framework for FOSS is provided by OSADL. See
- https://www.osadl.org/OSADL-Open-Source-Policy-Template.os-policy-template.0.html
- https://www.osadl.org/OSADL-Open-Source-License-Checklists.oss-compliance-lists.0.html
for example. Note that for actual legal advice many jurisdictions require that it's provided by an actual lawyer. Legal advice and training on the FOSS related legal questions can be be bought from lawyers (who incidentally are also retained by the FSFe).
You can now argue that the FSFe != FSF. I don't buy this. This is the same org wand community without certain legacy problems (right or wrong, I want to emphasize).

> being reduced to "advocating for FOSS" will make it irrelevant
They are also operating the free software directory and curating "GNU" software.
The former task of supplying source by floppy mail-order is sort of obsolete now.
The task of providing downloads becomes more and more obsolete now with all that git hosting around.
But the FSF was never (or hardly ever) in the business of developing software. They were sort of mentoring various projects (Emacs) or there was an overlap in participants (RMS in the FSF and Emacs project, for example). So yes, for some time this structure might not have been clear.
But this "people should be ashamed of the FSF" was exactly why project strove for more (visible) independence.
Now accusing the FSF of not developing software is a bit of a contradiction.

I feel there is a connection between shaming an org and people later being ashamed to promote it. Often (not always) the same people. As I said, there was a lot of bad faith in the public controversy with the FSF --- which was not productive (because it split the community, rather than aligning it).

I'd say it depends on the situation. See my most recent post. Also, your "meme" was just this tiny bit off (misunderstanding the role of the FSF, also seemingly confusing the FSF and the FOSS community in the later replies) that I can understand why people might want to start with the basics when confronted with your stance.
My usual reply is: I know everything from this foundation up to that elevated topic. My day job is <title withheld>. Can we gat to what you really want to tell me, instead of you trying to update me? I have literally been in open source for decades (plural, more than two).
Personally I think if one wants to have useful conversations in the anonymous internet / social media, this kind of calibrations is the least somebody can do. It cannot work without that. If people feel pissed off if they have to do this regularly, they got a bad starting point for good conversation (and are likely ostracized from the ad-hoc communities who do not have a duty to talk to people they find abrasive or draining their mental resources).

Well, yes, not in the FOSS community per se. By definition they know what free software is, otherwise they wouldn't be the FOSS community.
But in the world at large? Yes, even by people distributing FOSS software, there are a lot of things on FOSS and free/coplefted software not known (or strategically forgotten). And I know what I am talking about.
"People" (well, mostly corporations) need regular reminders on what open source is (actually on both aspects: The right to use and how that is *safe* and the obligations that come with distributions).

Let me give you a tip: If you want to lead a cogent discussion in public, don't start flaming at large groups with generalized bad-mouthing. Basically everybody who'd want to discuss this with you would either have to fear that they're accused of being an obnoxious fan-boy (because they see things rather in shades of grey than stark black and white as you) or just agrees (doesn't make for much new insights) or just doesn't know or care about free software.

LOL. And that exactly is the point. The foundation of good processes is
(a) Keep them simple. Approve exceptions rather on a case by case basis rather then writing every borderline case into the process (that makes them convoluted).
(b) Before you even write, but also afterward: Communicate, communicate, communicate. A process is worth zilch, if those executing them are neither convinced nor want to do them[1]. So it needs to be aligned with their goals and that needs to be visible (and perceptible) to them.
[1] Or you can just operate and implant a "compliance chip" directly at the brain stem. I heard, though, despite us having the technology since the pandemic (see: G5 nanites being injected), it's still inexplicably illegal in some jurisdictions.

Question: Is there a #Lisp oriented mastodon server?

2025-06-23 21:04:42 GMT

Original post from May/11:
I just discovered I got blocked by somebody whose opinion and posts I highly value.
Since can't imagine (or remember) which interaction might have triggered this course of action, I tried to reconstruct our last interaction(s) from web searches, and discovered the following:
(a) This is practically impossible to find past interaction with specific accounts.
(b) A couple of other accounts *I* have been following formerly which now block me without me remembering any untowards interaction with them.
This all makes me unexpectedly sad.
I think I'll put in another Mastodon moratorium for an indeterminate length of time.
Looking back, Mastodon did not really work for me, with what I'd term "meaningful" connections. This is very likely the way my mind works.
If anybody can recommend communities related to #lisp, #agile, #softwareengineering or #infosec, I'd appreciate if you could reply or DM. I am still missing connection there (after 2.5 years of Fedi, which should tell me something).
----
Part of the problem (of not being able to reconstruct interaction) is, that all my posts are set to auto-delete after 1 week.
TIL: This has disadvantages.
----
(Why repeat this? For pinning. I got an unfortunate case of Fediplaining in reply to the original post, and I want to drop that)

Really spacious this space ship. Going by the evolution of seating arrangements in modern commercial airlines, the more likely arrangement in future space lines would be:
- Passenger get a pill for sedation 20 minutes before departure.
- Get sealed into a 40 x 40 y 200 cm coffins.
- Everybody who needs a larger coffin needs to pay surcharge.
- Passenger getting restless, get knocked out by means of sleeping gas dose fed into the coffin from a small gas cylinder every flight attendant has on their belt.
- You can buy extra oxygen or cooling from the on-board oxygen bar (virtual) at the really cheap price of $5 per liter.
- Business class gets more oxygen and larger coffins.

In the 30s + 40s we had something like this in Germany. It was called "Blockwart" (translated perhaps "block warden").

Strange, though, that it's not on the web site. And I suppose one can send April fools by mail, there is not RFC against it ;-).
We will see. If this is an April's fool, it's certainly bad taste doing this to their writers. I get from you link that people get agitated.

Any idea what happens here? (1) is there a better way to compare path-names? (2) Shouldn't EQUAL structurally compare everything, even path-names?

Not to defend the Tangerine One, but there is an EO 14187 => https://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/documents/executive-order-14187-protecting-children-from-chemical-and-surgical-mutilation
So it seems not unlikely that this is just counting and the EOs don't start at 0 for every prez.

> Much depends on how one defines and understands what hope is, it seems to me.
As I said: The hope that everything will blow over, that it doesn't take collectively rising up, that the few who seriously put the lives they have on the line, that all this will be enough. That one can avoid the all-out conflict with Trump's goons or with the neighbors who voted for him.
This is what keeps people from rising up: Their desire to avoid conflict, to get along with their neighbors, their bosses, the system. The desire for a bit of piece.
And unfortunately it hands an advantage to the goons, who don't mind the conflict, the violence, physically or psychologically.
(Not by accident this is the same mechanism which so often prevents beaten spouses with their partners)

And soon you'll all learn the answer to the question a lot of people had: Why nobody took Hitler out of circulation before he fully consolidated control.
Not that I don't feel with all who now don't burn their lives in possibly futile acts of resistance. Hope (that it will blow over or that somebody else will do the necessary thing) is sometimes poisonous.

Yes we got that. But I would have expected aligning yourself with the Tangerine One -- the chaotic horror from beyond time -- would even be beneath you. After all you are standing for order, not chaos.
Just a tiny bit of feedback from the resistance.

The resistance already does. Both pairs are identical black, but clearly mismatched. The right sock is a bit larger to accommodate a small side cutter. You know what for.
We are gonna give you a couple of mismatched circuit boards when we will catch you.

Ernsthaft.
"If you need patterns, your programming language is not powerful enough"
This is a probably mutilated quote, but I cannot find the source now.

"Like any of that matters if you don't have a democracy anymore."
I only say: IG Farben.
There will always be people who see a short term advantage doing business under and possibly with a totalitarian regime. One advantage (to them) is, e.g the lack of competition or the opportunity to rat on the competition as Jewish (wait, it's "woke" today).
The shocking thing is, that there are so many of these. And that they were dropping their masks so fast.

On the other side, I am just thinking about "never attribute to malice what could be attributed to stupidity".
I have, over time, read most of the seminal books of what makes knowledge workers tick (De Marco, Daniel Pink, etc) and unobtrusively probed management types for whether they read it (with some subversive intentions, admitted). But it turns out, nobody (!) has and most don't have a theory of management beyond "it's just common sense".

While doing so, I'll try to add an AI training prohibition to every single one. I have currently no idea how to do that in a way that is legally water tight (strange given that I am the creator of that source that in the face of these corporation it is me who has to find a binding phrasing, instead of them (...)
