UK Spinsters, please clarify this possible cultural difference.
Is it rude to use someone else's driveway to turn your car around?
I'm told this is not done in the UK. It's generally OK here in Canada but once (twenty years ago) my dad did it in a richer, secluded neighbourhood and got told "Well, that's very cheeky!"

I listened to a podcast interviewing Anthea Lawson and had to turn it off. I hadn't heard of her but she has written about activists and non-profit sector having a saviour complex and doing harm while trying to help. And she fought against tax havens. Great, sounds interesting. I have dabbled in the non-profit sector and have seen the old saying in action: institutions don't really want to solve the problem that would put them out of work.
So she starts talking about how we always think we're the good guys and that we believe if we just give people information, the right information, they will think like us.
Two breaths later, talking about the 'attack on trans people' and 'misinformation'.
You just did the thing you're supposed to be alerting us to, Anthea.
Look, I have checked multiple times to see if I'm just a pearl-clutching bigot. But a man showed up to clean Grandma's house in a maid outfit with no underwear underneath. What am I supposed to do with that 'misinformation'?

I told you about subbing in a high school art class. In the 3rd period, a boy around 15 years old was making lifesize cardboard models of rifles and muskets. He had several already completed, supposedly with the blessing of Mr. Lax Art Teacher.
Would you allow it?

And yes, preteens and teens are developmentally supposed to push boundaries, they say.
Me pushing boundaries in grade 7 in 199x: my friend and I would go to her house at lunch WITHOUT SIGNING OUT and watch an episode of Fawlty Towers before returning to school. ABSOLUTE HOOLIGANS.
Kids pushing boundaries now: Ms Q, who's your favourite serial rapist?

Ugh just saw a review of a book about masculinity that said men should aim to be 'provider, protector, procreator'.
Author is male.
Do (hetero) women want those things to be the male role?
Then saw a comment from man who blamed feminists for forcing men into role of protector of women.

I want to organize a community project and I'm fearful that it will immediately get derailed during the introductions by genderwoo. I've seen it happen before. Some self-appointed trans ally made a big deal about pronouns and gender-inclusive language and poof! a third of the meeting was wasted.
Have you seen a faciliator/chair skillfully navigate away from someone making it all about them and get conversation back to the main goal?

Nope. A less well-off neighbourhood but mainstream classroom.

Where we're at:
I'm sent to help with a class of grade 4s doing math. Their regular teacher is pulling random names and asking those kids to name the 4 operations in math (add, subtract, multiply, division). Some are confident, some struggle. Teacher decides to ask every single kid. Even though they all heard the answers over and over again, about one third of the class did not have the working memory to list the four operations.
(My sense is that they did know the four operations and would recognize them in a math question. The problem was organizing the information into a list - most students said three and then named one a second time because they had already forgotten what they'd said.)

Met a seven year old boy today who kept calling a classmate his girlfriend, talked about kissing girls, repeatedly said 'my nuts are big', made rude gestures with his pelvis, all part of a general stream of potty talk and bouncing off the walls. 40 minutes straight. I had no helper.
This is the most extreme behaviour I've met in five years of teaching, at least this young.
Is it porn? Sexual abuse?
Scary.

My grandmother is living alone but showing signs of dementia. A relative organized for someone to come clean her carpets.
Grandma was telling my mom about it, said her carpets were cleaned by 'a man with no clothes'.
We are all used to Grandma mixing up her words, but no- it seems the carpet cleaner, male, was in a very short maid's outfit with no underwear underneath.
These men are sick.

Another example of Trans messaging for children, recorded for posterity.
Today I took a class to the school library (I'm a substitute teacher, don't know the kids, don't know the staff). As the children sat down, a boy complained that the other kids called him gay. The school librarian took the 'learning opportunity' to talk about why being gay is okay.
She asked the kids what gay means. "It means being attracted to your own gender."
"Yes. Sometimes we are attracted to people of the same gender as us, sometimes people of a different gender. Sometimes we are born in one kind of body but we feel like another gender inside. It's just nature."
After hearing some boys share experiences of being called gay and not liking it, Librarian also gave the example of calling someone the wrong name being annoying. So being called gay when you're not is a violation of your identity and it's ok to be mad but it's also totally ok to be gay and you should stand up for gay people.
Then the same boy said "And they called me a girl's name!"
The librarian said "I'll speak to you two privately."
And that's the conversation we're not having-- misogyny and stupid standards of masculinity, already firmly entrenched in boys by age 9.

I'm a substitute teacher again; it's been a few years since I subbed.
They're always telling teachers to 'form relationships' with students if there are behaviour problems, but as a sub, I have to go a bit more carrot and stick because I only get one day with them.
One thing I haven't figured out how to manage is when a group of boys decide to work together to misbehave. I call it a 'Biggest Idiot Contest'.
One boy makes a comment and his friends all echo it.
One boy makes a noise with his mouth and suddenly six boys are making farting sounds.
If you call out one boy publicly, his loyal friends only act out more in his defense. The boys are having a great time derailing the lesson and gaining status in the eyes of their friends. I try to stay calm but the behaviour is so rude and disruptive it's hard to not show frustration. It's a judgement call as a sub as to when to call for backup. Often I just leave a note for the regular teacher and hope that there are consequences the next day.
Every day I say to myself that the dumbest sex somehow got control of the world. 10 year old boys still being raised to think they're the centre of the fucking universe and don't have to listen to adult women.
*the incident that prompted this post happened last week. I'm fine.

Follow up thoughts on encountering TIM/gender-bendy teacher in the wild yesterday (see previous post):
I overheard him saying to two preteen girls "I'm always wearing makeup. Even if it doesn't look like it, I have blush and foundation...."
1. Really don't like presenting makeup as normal or desirable.
2. You are a huge attention magnet in that getup. TEACHING IS NOT ABOUT YOU.

I'm sure I've told this story before, but seeing him again reminded me. The TIM who peaked me did a talk to trainee teachers. Talked about tucking up his junk and untucking for a while while trying to have a baby with his (poor, poor,) wife.
Just wondering why that was included in a talk in a professional setting. I mean, I absolutely know why he's talking about his bits in public, but he gives these talks all the time and no one said, uh leave that part out please.
Cue that Family Guy clip. You know the one.

Looking for some light summer reading, I dared to dip into the YA fantasy section at the local library. Carefully read author bios, rejecting any with 'they' pronouns. Picked out a historical novel set in ancient Britain, 'based on folklore'.
Well, wouldn't you know it? One of the three sisters knows she's really a man.

I've been in teaching only a few years (second career) and everyone who's been in 10+ will say the kids are becoming less capable academically. Also attention span, respect, social skills.
I had a class of grade 3s last week trying to fold a piece of paper into eight sections. More thanthird of them couldn't figure out how to fold it into quarters. Only a few managed the eighths by themselves.
I wish I could scream it from the mountaintop that this is a crisis.

Hi, it's me, the school teacher who went quiet for a while. Back with more rants about education in Canada.
Today grade 7s had their 'graduation'. Ridiculously overblown celebration of precious little achievement but yes, they are going to high school and leaving childhood behind.
The dresses, oh my goddess the dresses. Full on prom dresses, spahetti straps and sweetheart necklines and poufy floor length skirts. One girl was in a strapless tube dress like she was a 20 year old going clubbing.
Compared to what I wore in the 90s- a navy blue floral sheath over a white t-shirt.
Some of the girls were wearing dresses I though suitable for 12 year olds to wear to a school event, but more than half were not.
I had vague thoughts about the trend- girls reaching puberty earlier, society encouraging sexualization earlier... or we cut your boobs off?
I know the concept of childhood has changed throughout time if anyone has deep scholarly thoughts about that.

Someone drew dicks in a group art project (abstract art on huge sheets of paper). We were all student teachers and it was a class about teaching art to children. I think there were 3 men.
I wish I had just said to the group, "Whoever drew these, you are not fit to be a teacher."

So let me tell you what I'm seeing.
A misbehaving boy holds everyone back by taking up the teacher's time. One misbehaving boy means that other boys will follow his lead. (Some girls will get sucked in as well, but it's less common).
I have posted before about an asshole kid who is both low IQ and culturally conditioned to not listen to women. That whole classroom has basically lost half a year of learning because he is running the show.
Boys hold boys back.
If there are boys doing well in school, they often get bullied by other boys.
If men think school is too feminine, there is nothing stopping them from becoming teachers.

I researched why there aren't many female geniuses. It's something about how men can be really successful passing on genes or not at all, while women generally have a more consistent number of surviving offspring each. Somehow that means that women have less of a spread in intelligence, we're all around average, while men are more to the extremes of really high and really low.

2024-12-22 17:26:48 GMT

Just saw an Instagram reel that of course I've lost the link to.
We hear the voice of a Russian (?) male PE teacher barking out orders to march: left! right! left! right!
On screen, a group of boys around 8 years old march in place. They can't keep time; they flop around.
The camera pans to the back of the line and we see the girls. Spines straight, knees high, crisp steps in perfect unison.
Last week, Youtube tried to show me a video about how 'boys are falling behind in education oh noes'.
I'm a teacher working with kids under twelve.
The boys are not 'falling' behind.
They are behind from the get-go.
Girls outperform in every area except physical strength and taking up space in discussions, which is sometimes seen as 'leadership'.

Do you know the term 'Overton window'? It's the general consensus of what is reasonable, normal, acceptable... ideas outside the Overton window are radical and extreme.
So I was wondering how the Overton window was manipulated to allow gender ideology...I mean, I know about the Pritzkers and the latching on to other movements... it's still an astoundingly fast spread of acceptance for something that used to be considered perverted.
I searched 'overton window trans' and the top results were trans people complaining about the 'move to the right'when it comes to bathroom policy.

Driving incident, the kind that happens almost every day. I'm in the 'fast lane' and I am doing 20km over the speed limit. The lane to my right is quite crowded, and to my left there is a carpool lane which is empty.
Big red truck comes up right behind me, way too close to be safe, but I keep my speed stable. He flashes his lights. I keep my speed stable. I know what he wants but I'm already speeding and I can't easily change into the slower lane.
Finally he pulls into the empty carpool lane, honking and fingering me, and then cuts back in front of me.
I'm still shaken by this. If he doesn't care about the speeding laws, why not break ALL the laws and go in the carpool lane without the show of aggression? There would have been no consequences for him. But bigger question about men who really believe they should be able to do whatever they want and women who block them in any way should be punished. How many men think like this and how are they getting this idea? Like speed limits are somehow women's fault?

ARRRRRRRGH THIS FUCKING CULT
My progressive friend just told me her 9 year old daughter thinks she's trans. My friend, the mom, used to be gender critical but is 'softening'. (Never heard of this before, unpeaking....) However, she does know it's a social contagion somewhat.
It was such an awkward conversation. I said kids aren't ready for this stuff, and not more than that.
I changed this kid's diaper when she was a toddler and don't want her to go down this road. She has always been into feminine clothes, for what that's worth, but she is a quirky little soul. This is almost certainly sparked by a Discord channel (that mom banned when she saw the content).
So upset.
