Friendly reminder: last year I built FediMod FIRES, a protocol and reference server implementation for sharing moderation data.
I haven't yet been able to get anyone to adopt it or even signal intent to adopt. But regularly I see people complaining about the lack of data sharing when it comes to moderation, especially for combating spam, scams, and harassment. The tool is there, please use it!
Whilst I'm not actively working on FediMod FIRES this quarter, I did apply in November for a grant to continue that work, and last I heard a few weeks ago is that the grant made it to the next stage, so I may have some money again to fund development.
It's not 1.0.0 yet, because I decided it needed more work for me to be happy to call it that, but it is usable!
Installation is also super simple for data producers, literally two commands on debian or ubuntu boxes.

A fundamental reality of the open social web is that not every app should be an "everything app" — it simply doesn't make sense like that.
I have an upcoming talk explaining what the current architecture of ActivityPub projects tends to be, and what alternative architectures are possible.
There's no reason you should only be limited to photos if you use Pixelfed, but Pixelfed doesn't need to provide microblogging capabilities, just like Mastodon doesn't need to provide good support for photos, long videos, articles, check-ins, music listens anything else that we can dream up.
This is just a byproduct of the current architecture of the Fediverse.

If you build unsafe software, and then suffer the consequences of that software being unsafe, that's not on the people who reported you for distributing horrible shit, that's on you for not thinking about the safety of your product.
"Oh, well you could've privately told me my software was unsafe" — you launched it that way and didn't bother with safety, no one owes you anything. It's not like baseline safety measures like blocking known horrendous content is a novel problem never faced before.

Hey #fediverse people, I've an ask: If you appreciate all that I do for the fediverse and open social web, and you'd like to see me continue to do that work, please support my work financially.
Right now I'm having to look for work outside of the Fediverse because I simply cannot make ends meet.
I need €60-70k per year to support myself, with costs everywhere feeling increased (so that number may even be too low)
Right now, year to date, I've received a total of €20,170 in financial support from the community, and €22,450 from NLNet grants. I've also only had minimal freelance work this year, as I've been busy on grant work & try to focus on the fediverse & open social web.
So my total income isn't yet enough to be regularly sustainable. I've had problems being able to make rent payments this year because cashflow on grants comes in large chunks usually months after the work has been done.

I've also been able to request payment from my NLNet grant for FediMod FIRES, which everyone, including Mastodon, have been asking for this year.
The goal of FediMod FIRES is to empower moderation teams to share trust & safety data, and it's now fully functional, and I'm just working on the final push to release version 1.0.0
FediMod FIRES looks beyond where sharing of moderation data currently is at on the Fediverse, and introduces several new ideas, but the core idea is that federation management should be more like firewall policies rather than just domain blocks and open-by-default to the horrors of the internet.
This year has been incredibly tough & thankless, but I've had some wins too, like getting Client ID Metadata Documents adopted by the OAuth Working Group.
The history of these goes back to my introduction to an early version of them that I encountered in the Solid ecosystem. After a call with Aaron Parecki in May last year to explore how we could improve Mastodon's OAuth (following a significant amount of work by myself on it), we realised that this fairly unknown part of the Solid OIDC specification needed to be lifted up to an official IETF standards document. That would allow decentralized social web to work much more smoothly.
Mastodon has showed interest in CIMDs, and whilst they wanted to fund the work to implement them, they weren't willing to fund the other extremely necessary OAuth work (expiring access tokens, refresh tokens, public clients, etc). So that work has languished because I can't afford to spend time on it.
Right now I'm trying to figure out what's next, because building for trust and safety in the fediverse hasn't been sustainable. It's almost like we care more about the appearance of valuing trust & safety more than the work it actually takes to achieve it.
I'm looking at a few other roles in the trust and safety space, and seeing if I can secure more funding through grants or freelance contracts to continue my work.

So here's a little bombshell for y'all: over the past two months I was interviewing for a role on Bluesky's trust & safety team, whilst I didn't end up getting the role, I had a lot of people from the ActivityPub community encouraging me to apply to it.
I didn't say anything publicly at the time, and perhaps never would have — it didn't happen after all, and I couldn't afford for people to get mad and cancel their donations in support of my work on Trust & Safety in the Fediverse and especially Mastodon. I've already had some cancellations occur seemingly in direct reaction to me diversifying and doing more work with AT Protocol.
I applied because my work on the Fediverse has been fundamentally unsustainable for the entire year, and because it was a role I could learn & grow in. There's a lot that can be said for an opportunity to work on something larger than I've worked on previously.
This year I've barely scraped by, unable to afford things that would allow me to live a better life & be more productive. I've been struggling with health issues stemming from a likely MCAS diagnosis, where food randomly sends me into coughing fits so bad I vomit at times. It's also amplified by stress, and my goodness I've had a lot of that this year.
Even if I had gotten the job, I would've continued in my role as co-lead (and founder) of the ActivityPub Trust & Safety taskforce, which has been a thankless job, and one I'm constantly pushed for time on. I did find myself at one point asking @nprofile…wk8l
If I should step down, because I know my health can sometimes make things difficult (I can't always make meetings because some days I can barely leave my bed due to stomach cramps and nausea.
Next, let's have a look at current funding & some wins.

A little #FediForumFriday update: I've released a few versions of FIRES over the past week, each shipping a new feature:
- Support for importing into datasets from existing files
- Support for exporting datasets to mastodon compatible files (including a retraction list)
- Installer script for easy deployment (still testing & not ready for production)
- Various UI fixes
I've also a demo server live that I've shared with a few folks on the implementation side.
I'm exploring a few things:
- Typescript SDK for consumers
- Non-public Datasets
- Delta support for snapshots (if you don't care about all the individual changes)
- Additional administrative UI (account management, access token management)
- *Maybe* HTTP Message Signature based authentication for non-public datasets (stretch)
I'm also toying with a few major design changes, but that's a bit TBD, since I'd want to drop picocss at the same time, and improve the admin panel in general.
I'm trying to figure out exactly what I want in the 1.0.0 release, and also have some production readiness stuff to do.

If you're wondering why I'm sometimes not able to attend the AP Trust & Safety taskforce meetings, it's because I've a chronic illness that means sometimes I'm bed bound, and/or can only prioritize one thing on a given day.
Today that meant prioritizing a job interview that I had scheduled after the taskforce meeting, after having two days of being bed bound with stomach problems. I'm sorry if my chronic illness inconveniences you, but just try being me dealing with it, and still trying to get things done.
And yes, I needed to prioritize a job interview because working in the fediverse just isn't allowing me to make ends meet.
The taskforce also has a co-chair for this very reason. And even without either of the co-chairs available, people are still welcome to use that time to discussion trust & safety issues and share ideas, and write up meeting notes such that the chairs can review and then help things move forwards.
The taskforce isn't the only thing in my life, and gets the attention I can give it whilst underpaid. It's a volunteer position, and sometimes that means I won't be available.

Recently there has been a lot of discourse about ActivityPub and AT Protocol which has been quite dividing and heated.
Yesterday at the Social Web CG meeting (the group that maintains the ActivityPub and related specifications), I proposed releasing a statement that counters the narrative that one of these protocols must win, when both protocols can co-exist and have a lot to learn from each other.
The statement has been co-signed by various members of both Social Web CG, SocialCG, and the AT Protocol community.
“We do not win by tearing each other down, which only emboldens and empowers those who do not want either protocol to succeed.”
“Arguing between us only emboldens those that seek to derail and destroy efforts to build an open social web.”

@nprofile…el4d it's more that your device would become a pocket snitch any time you send media through apps — it'll hash the media using perceptual hashing (which doesn't work great for video btw) and then compare that hash to hashes of known CSAM (or anything else that has ended up in that database), and then if it detects a match it'll trigger a report automatically to somewhere (??)
They may also opt for the significantly high false positive rate method of using ML/AI to determine what content is in the media, and if certain keywords pop at a high enough frequency trigger a report. Obviously this is hugely invasive and prone to abuse, but as we don't even have the "somewhere" to send the report the entire proposal is moot. Like, you can't report something if there's no where for it to be reported to & have it handled with a coordinated response.

A plain a simple fact is that we can already prevent the distribution of terroristic or violent extremist content (TVEC) and child sexual abuse material (CSAM) without the need for invading everyone's privacy.
Why? Because most of this stuff is shared publicly on large social media platforms.
There's a bunch that does go through apps like telegram, but it doesn't happen in end-to-end encrypted places typically. It happens in public chats that telegram can and should moderate.
Our problems with combating CSAM and TVEC in the EU are not solved by scanning everyone's devices for potentially harmful material, in fact, that creates a *way* larger problem.
Our problems are that we don't have reporting hotlines for ESPs (electronic service providers) to actually report illegal conduct on their platforms across the EU. We have nothing like NCMEC here that coordinates reports of content with law enforcement & distributes hashes of known harmful content.
You report CSAM in the EU, and most likely that report goes to NCMEC in the US because we simply don't have the institutional organisations to handle it.
So given the lack of reporting and response management hotlines, what do you think is going to happen when you mandate scanning of private content on everyone's devices and the sheer number of false positives that's going to generate? The already barely working system is going to completely collapse.
Chat Control will not protect kids, it won't prevent the distribution of TVEC or CSAM, it'll just overburden and already broken and fragmented system. We already can't handle the basics of reporting harmful content. Let alone all the AI generated CSAM and TVEC content.
Anyone who thinks Chat Control is the answer is a fool with authoritarian leanings.

So I just realised that the "tech princess" link on my website was broken, after I made my instagram disappear.
Anyway, here's the back story: I was going to React Day Berlin in November 2019, and I was so bored of going to tech conferences in jeans and a t-shirt, and wanted to be *hyper* femme, so I bought a huge ballgown and wore that to the conference. I also tried to encourage some other femmes to join me, but didn't have much luck.
It was literally to poke fun at the fact that tech conferences are all jeans and t-shirts or like suits. I wanted to do something different.

I'm trying to compile information on this attack (we don't have any of this data from Hachyderm, because we've approval based registrations due to LLM spam)

I should also note that I'm not the only frequent contributor to various fediverse projects who is struggling to make ends meet. I know of at least a half dozen other independent developers who do a tonne of work in standards and figuring stuff out for the fediverse who don't have stable income from well-paid jobs to rely upon.
So my comment wasn't me asking for money from someone, but rather, just saying that there's folks that have expertise in making changes, and they could be hired to make the changes you want to see in a reasonable manner.
We cannot rely on free labour to advance the fediverse. We live in a capitalist society, so folks need money to pay their rent, buy food and frankly exist.

Just released version v0.3.3 (part of the v0.3 line) of the FIRES Reference Server, which includes:
- Ability to mark labels as deprecated in the Admin UI
- Ability to see if a label is deprecated in the Web UI
- Added the number of translations for each label in the Admin UI
- Fixed a bug that prevented updating a label with a new translation when it already had a translation (I was suddenly seeing a conflicting row error)

@nprofile…6naz there's a lot of "they could"'s on EU residents ("EU coders"), and I think it's worth pointing out that it's not "they could", but "we are"
I'm an EU resident and lead the ActivityPub Trust and Safety taskforce. One of the things I've brought forward is how labellers can work for the fediverse, and we're working towards a FEP for self-labelling at the moment.
I know myself and many other EU residents who are doing the work.
You know what's hard?
Getting paid for doing the work. Yeah, it's open-source and open standards, but it still takes time to do all this work, and time is money.
Getting grants is slow and time consuming and don't provide income until milestones are reached, which can take months. Doing the bookkeeping and accounting for getting grants and donations from the community? Next to impossible because SKR04 accounts don't really handle "money I received without supply or consideration", which should be VAT free but do you think I can find a clear legal opinion on this? Nope
We're only half way there with unlocking our full potential for what can be done, and the people doing are stuck in this capitalist hell hole of producing value, but not being paid enough, whilst everyone wants more of the money we don't have.

Coming in Mastodon 4.4, mods will be able to leave notes directly on instances just like they can on reports and accounts.
That's my big 4.4 feature. This is way better than using the private_comment field in domain blocks.

@nprofile…gk57 to be honest, I'm not sure how I got through my hardest year, like I have PTSD from it, but have no idea how I managed to survive. I'm not sure what kept me getting through it, besides mutual aid.
Now days, my hardships are different (health related), and friends reaching out for a conversation, but also accepting when I say I'm fatigued and can't talk, is so valuable.

As a little #FediForumFriday post, earlier this week I added an admin panel to the FediMod FIRES reference server, to hopefully make it easier for non-technical people in the trust & safety community to experiment with.
Haven't been able to get much else done due to health issues.

@nprofile…xyz3 to be clear, this only affects people on mastodon.social (and possibly mastodon.online), it doesn't affect the wider number of mastodon instances that are self-hosted or hosted by independent organisations.
The email received today was an example of a new feature coming in Mastodon 4.4, which allows admins to set a terms of service document with acceptance

The interesting thing about this is that apparently that wasn't actually said as "I'm banning..." by Macron, and instead it's a very sensationalist way to translate what he did say.
(There was discussion in the Mastodon Discord today about it)

There's a new-ish scam going around where scammers are posing as companies hiring people, but the condition to getting hired is that you pay for something/buy something/use something that requires you to pay.
It should be obvious, but it's not a job if you're paying them.
I've seen at least two people fall for that on various socials.

Dear Fediverse, does anyone in Germany have a good tax advisor who's currently accepting new clients?
All the replies I'm getting are "sorry, tax season we're busy and not accepting new clients"
I've been quietly looking in the background but not having any luck, would very much so appreciate introductions.
I'm a freelancer, I do my own bookkeeping, and generally understand how to comply with tax law, so it's really the "how does X need to be handled?" or "am I handling VAT correctly?" or "filing my annual returns so everything is properly taxed". English is preferred language, but I can work with written German.

In other news, I'm almost there with a version 0.1.0 of FIRES
I've just authentication to land, and then you'll be able to spin up the FIRES reference server and create Labels for labelling things in the future (label vocabularies)
These labels will then be used for the Datasets which will be in 0.2.0 of FIRES

For far too long these ads have been persistently running on tumblr despite reports of their harmful and graphically violent nature. As I point out, as a user I would be expected to apply a community label for mature / violence to post the video of that ad that runs natively on tumblr.
It's rather disgraceful, and sure, you might not have much pick in ads, but the least you could do is make sure they're not literally gun violence.

I've currently been doing a tonne of work on Doorkeeper, a Mastodon dependency for OAuth, and currently that work is mostly uncompensated.
I'm also doing a reasonable amount of work on the standards side (W3C & IETF), which is also uncompensated.

Seeing a lot of posts at the moment on social media of "trans women are women" after the judicial decision in the UK yesterday, and it's eating away at me a bit.
Feels very... idk like:
a) tell me something I don't know,
b) like this creates room for debate on whether trans women really are women (when it's simply not something to debate)
I'm not seeing quite as many posts saying that they stand with trans women and will actually do something to enshrine trans people's right to exist (in a time when those rights seem to be being stripped away everywhere)
Like, we're well beyond the point of that phrase being at all meaningful, we need action from allies, not just words.
