Do you use or make maps in your writing process?
I'll usually do a 'world' map if I'm working on somewhere imaginary.
Often, for complex scenes, I'll sketch a quick 'battle-map' even for things that aren't a battle, so I can keep track of where everyone is. Anything that makes things simpler and therefore doesn't interrupt the flow of the writing.

@nprofile…xeqa No particular meaning to any design. They vary by culture, so make sure you're aware of the cultural background of your roomie. The green indicates jade, which is considered a precious stone in many cultures. Your local garden centre is probably your best bet for off-Am, if there are no Asian specific shops in your area.
In short, have a chat with your roomie, and maybe take them shopping with you so you can pick out one together. It'll be a good bonding experience.

@nprofile…c82n I'm a game designer. Cards, Dice, same thing. Randomness is what we're talking about. Any decent card game will have some way of using cards. Many will be based on higher luck (Poker), others will involve more strategy (Bridge, Arboretum, Coloretto, Sushi Go, most Button Shy games, and a whole bunch of others that only have cards but involve varying levels of strategy). If the reviewer doesn't like high luck-based games, and the game is highly luck-based, the review is valid.

@nprofile…3h99 The answer is, It Depends. Mostly Libraries make purchasing decisions based on predicted demand, with an awareness that some books will experience greater demand. If a book has been around for a while, and is considered "commercially reduced" (I can't remember the exact term, but basically not selling many copies anymore) and is still in high demand, they may purchase an extra copy for their system. Unlikely with any particular book, though.

@nprofile…c82n But with poker you're not actually playing the cards you draw. The whole point of poker is the bluffing. Even in Blackjack you have the decision to hit or not. If I roll a die five times and you roll a die five times and I win because I rolled higher numbers, that's not a game. If there's some other activity around those rolls and the numbers are used for different things, that's a game. Game design has to balance being able to do things and just blind rolling to win.

How do you organise your notes? (No notes?)
I used to keep a document of characters that I'd created in alphabetical order, then a separate section for world-building I did on the fly. I now do both of those in the same document with Scribus, along with my entire manuscript with each section labelled at the side so I can find bits easily. That works well for me. I just wish there was a version for android.

I'm basically recovered from my first big book festival. It took a surprisingly long time to fully recharge, probably due to all the admin and bullshit around putting my dad into full time care. I'm sketching out chapter ideas for book 5, the last book of the Desolation series. I'll have that finished by the end of the year. Probably along with another book I'm writing. More book fairs and Supanovas to attend, but I should find those easier, now.

@nprofile…r0wr Your home feed will show the feed from the site you signed up to, plus people you follow. You can also show all feeds - i.e. the whole of Mastodon. Personalising things require effort on your part. Just add everyone you want to see to a list. to a list. You'll be fine.

@nprofile…r0wr Those are called 'lists'. You recreate a list of people you follow, then view that list as your feed, or one of your feeds if you're using a desktop.
