It would be incredibly useful to include the source location of the Proc in the error message. In Ruby code with lots of abstractions, it can be unclear where the Proc came from.

I've spend a non-trivial amount of time trying to avoid using native Ruby gems on my servers. Now my system requires a gigabyte of compiler stuff installed just to `bundle`. 😔

I’m reviewing the proposed bylaws for Ruby Central and:
- I can’t find an actual board member election process so I presume board members are still board elected, not community elected.
- the new community governance model is strictly advisory, with no teeth (12.3)
- community governance can be suspended for emergency reasons, like if they believe Andre is hacking their site and need to take over a repo (12.7)
I don’t see this as a major improvement. Anyone feel otherwise?

Towards a safer Timeout API in Ruby.
https://beautifulruby.com/code/tcp-user-timeout
It's a bit of a blunt solution, some sockets may want a 0.1s timeout while others want a 10s timeout. I think a Fiber-local Context API (like Go's but not manually passed around) might be another interesting idea. Maybe I'll prototype something ...

@nprofile…fr89 yep, but there’s no way to enforce idempotency through Ruby. Something like Haskell or Clojure can get there.

2026-05-08 19:34:12 GMT

ActiveJob just added support for additional attributes on jobs. I think long term that could be a bad idea. The power of jobs is that the only state they have is the job arguments, making them easier to test. Sidekiq provides middleware to set up orthogonal concerns which shouldn’t explicitly be part of the job code. I’m worried attributes will lead to mixed concerns and poor quality code.

I see many AI proponents advising "Use it to build all of your own tooling". This falls apart when people and orgs depend on those tools. Total cost of ownership is:
TCO = Cost of creation + (Cost of annual maintenance * years)
Does AI make maintenance cheaper? It is easy to maintain a big pile of AI generated code? GitHub's downtime chart would suggest the answer is "NO".
