We shouldn't be let down if an open social platform doesn't attract billions of users. If you need to reach more than a million then you might qualify as Big Tech yourself. Let me clarify, I'd love for billions to be in the fediverse, but in a much more distributed way. That's the whole point to me. Capable of reaching most but not wanting Mass Media or Big Tech reach. And I think those ideas will (I hope) permeate more than Open Social, but future business and ownership of all kinds.

Even if news organizations fixed their reporting, they are still some of the worst participants in the surveillance economy. So unless you are ProPublica or some of the various independent local news orgs, you can't even cover a critical topic like privacy in good faith. This will be the last straw, as the organizations won't be able to adapt to the privacy demands headed toward them. (I know, I know, nothing new here)

I'm not religious about it .For example, say you want to make JSON version of this available, the URL wouldn't change (the resource part of REST), you'd just send a different content-type in the header. REST really shines in cases like APIs where the URL `/subscriber` e.g. can use the HTTP verbs GET POST DELETE along with a path or param like `/subscriber/123` to indicate the specific subscriber. It helps developer consumers, but may or may not make a difference in many cases

I think you are 100% right that cross-posting is a requirement right now.
In an ideal world wouldn't cross-subscribe be the better goal?
In other words, I wouldn't need to follow Dave on Mastodon even if I only use Mastodon. I'd just subscribe to Scripting News from wherever I choose to read.
No need to duplicate content we want to syndicate.

to be clear, multi-truth doesn't mean I think there are alternative facts. most important thing is you need to apply the rules consistently no matter what your personal views are. I don't see that happening, though I agree it's not juries I'm criticizing, it's journalism

I see a lot of complaints about stories that get written by a certain news outlet. They want the news organization to parrot their view of the world. Do they really think the world is that simple? Since my first exploration into web development in the 90s, one of the main tenements I've held was that we live in a multi-truth world.
