Dan just cut the holes in the garage roof for skylights, and WOW does it make a huge difference! I've been using that space as my office for the past month, and it has been so dim inside. Now it feel completely different.
Note: I did encourage Dan to wear a mask, but he would prefer to breathe in the wildfire smoke. At least he is wearing eye and ear protection.

And I still have three breakers in the circuit box that I have no idea what they do, labeled DISC, OFFICE, and HALL SWITCHES.
We have one hall, and its one switch is on another circuit. My wife's office is on the same other circuit as that hall switch. And I can't figure out what would need a disconnect that doesn't already have its own labeled circuit.

Taking a break from watching videos of the Venezuelan earthquake to email our contractor about whether they've had ideas on how to better connect our second story floor joists to the wall plates they are resting on.
The single toe-nailed connection that is there right now does not inspire much confidence. At least we've bolted and strapped the rafters to the joists so they won't pancake in our overdue #Portland earthquake.

Even after digging through boxes in the pitch black garage for AA batteries, I couldn't find any that the FULLY WIRED smoke detector would accept, so I had to unplug it from the power so it would stop complaining. I feel so much safer.

Trying to coax a terrified Chihuahua out from behind junk in the yard because the smoke detector decided it urgently needed a new battery at 3:30am. The smoke detector that is wired into the house electricity and only ever needs a battery if the power goes out.

After CenturyLink/QuantumFiber/AT&T replaced our fiber terminal, and I replaced our wi-fi router, things seem to have gotten a bit more stable.
However, we are still having these occasional slowdowns for around 30 seconds, where everything becomes choppy and latency jumps up.
I just captured one that lasted 36 seconds, so I know I am not imagining it. I just wish the fiber company had any idea what was going on.

My biggest takeaway from traveling for a month with an #Aranet4 to monitor CO2 levels as a proxy for #covid risk, is that air conditioning gives you a false sense of security.
I was on a packed subway train that was stuck for 20 mins, and while the train was stopped with the doors open, the CO2 levels didn't go above 700ppm, despite feeling hot and stuffy. When the doors closed and the AC kicked in, the CO2 levels tripled, despite feeling like there was much more ventilation.

I gave the ants a rabbits foot fern to hang out in, if they need a place to move to. It isn't a warm power brick, but it is a lot like the orchid I used to have a colony of ants living in on my kitchen counter. Otherwise, I have no idea where they are about to move to

Headed back to #Chicago next week for another conference. I loved seeing the great #architecture last time in 2011. Perhaps my favorite building is #RiverCity, which was #BertrandGoldberg follow up to #MarinaCity, and has a similar design, but is more human-scaled, without the 16 floors of car parking on the bottom. And all the curved #BayWindows are incredible.

The #NikonCoolPix5000 was one of the first #DigitalCameras I've had and with one of the lowest resolutions (a maximum of 2560 × 1920 pixels), but looking back, it truly did a superb job with light, color, and textures. Probably better than any camera I've used since.
Look at how much detail is visible both in the light and dark sections of this photo.

I first started taking #lichen photos in 2002 with my Nikon Coolpix 5000 when I was living/working in #Virginia. The #BlueRidgeMountains had nice big boulders absolutely covered in all sorts of different species.

@nprofile…nw6h I am all for salvaging slightly broken appliances (I have a hot water kettle that I turn on by pushing the electrodes with a chopstick) but this is far too dangerous for my taste. Not ideal when the failure state is to keep heating things until they catch on fire.

Lol, I didn't even realize that another #aphid was photobombing this shot of the little yellow flowers when I took it.
With a complete lack of freezing weather this winter, #Portland is going to have a lot of opportunistic insects munching on our plants.
