Although I haven't seen one myself, earth fissures are possibly roaming the earth. And, if you ask me, they are moving at a pretty good speed.

This Townsend's Warbler appeared at a suet feeder in Charlotte, NC in late February and has been reliably visiting ever since. My wife and I went to see it on Saturday.
Normally, this species winters along the west coast of the U.S. and in Mexico and Central America. So it generates quite a bit of excitement when it appears in North Carolina.

When you are wading in shallow water and suddenly see a crab staring at your delicate little toes, it can be very distracting.

This Mourning Warbler was singing prolifically in a narrow patch of dune vegetation in Carteret County, NC on June 2 2014. I couldn't see the bird at first and initially misidentified the song as Kentucky Warbler. I quickly realized my error when the bird finally flew past my head. ("Idiot. Stop telling people I'm a Kentucky Warbler." LOL.)

In peaceful moments, Clarkie would gaze across the valley at distant mountains and wonder where peanuts originated. True, the Two-legged Peanut Emitters always seemed to have an ample supply of peanuts, but they never revealed sources and methods.

For a while in August 2011, this juvenile Red-shouldered Hawk made our bird bath its base of operations. This was at our previous home in central NC.
We moved in late 2020 and did have some Red-shouldered Hawks that very loudly ruled over our current neighborhood. Unfortunately, they abruptly vanished this past winter. I have no idea what happened.
