How does PRNU work as a "fingerprint"?
Microscopic imperfections:When producing photosensitive sensors (both in smatrphones and professional cameras),it is impossible to create perfect milions of pixels.Each pixel has a minimally different surface and converts photons into an electrical signal in a slightly different way.
permanent pattern:These minimal differences make the sensor impose a steady micro-noise pattern on each photo taken.
Uniqueness:Even two phones of the same model (e.g.,two iPhones made in the same second on adjacent production lines) have completely different PRNU designs.
How do experts identify the phone from a photo?
Taking a reference sample:To create a digital matrix profile (pattern), algorithms analyze a dozen or several dozen photos taken with a given phone.Uniform surfaces (e.g., clear sky) work best.
Filtering out image content:Using advanced mathmatical filters (e.g.,waveform),the actual content of the photo and random (thermal) noise are rejected.There remains a clean pattern of the PRNU.
Signature comparison:If the algorithm imposes a matrix pettern on a new,unknown photo and shows a high mathematical correlation,it is a hard process proof that the photo was taken with exactly this particular copy of the phone.
Application in practice
Digital forensics:Determining whether illegal materials(e.g. photos of blackmail) come from a phone secured by a suspect.
Authenticity verification:Photomontage detection.If a part of the photo has different PRNU noise system than the rest of the frame ,it means that it was pasted from a file from another device.
Fighting disinformation:Confirming whether agency photos from wartime conflict areas were actually taken with the correspondent´s smartphone.
Is it possible to deceive PRNU?
Ordinary compression (e.g. sending a photo via Messenger or uploading it to Instagram)weakens the noise signature,but advanced investigative algorithms can read it even from reduced files.Complete removal of the PRNU requires aggresive blurring of the photo,strong processing by dedicated AI denoising filters or the intentional addition of artificial noise,which ,however,drastically destroys the quality and detail of the photograph.
