I thought Snap Circuits still existed… that's sad if not.

If it was done today the discovery of the horrible truth would be in act 1 and the real horror would be the grinding gears of men in suits giving the protagonist one runaround after another until they're too exhausted to keep trying to do anything while every normal person expresses nothing but total apathy about it. No need to actually suppress the information.

It's kind of cool that we have a modern *de facto* standard equivalent to the S-100 in the #RC2014 bus.

Given the situation in the US I'm now living in Canada, and I'm looking for a new job as my current one is obviously American. If you are or know a Canadian employer with use for a person in Toronto with a good understanding of SQL databases, Linux administration (mostly Debian but I can do Fedora), HTML-based Web backends, ServiceNow, and Microsoft cloud offerings, plus some networking experience (office networks and outbound-filtering firewalls), technical writing skills, and significant programming experience with Rust, Python, C#, and PowerShell, please get in touch via email or DMs.

A stack language, implemented in a register language, implemented in a stack language, implemented by an interpreter running on a register machine.

Unfortunately, it is more complicated than that. "Full access" means access to age-restricted channels and certain other features, none of which are the basic text channels used by most technical communities. Of course I would still recommend everyone seek to get off Discord if at all possible and use this as leverage to get any communities you are in to go with, but no, not /*all*/ discords are becoming categorically papers-please zones.

I am no lawyer, but I think the reason they classified it as work was because it was done for Canadians in exchange for room and board? Still would not recommend visiting the USA for any reason.

Haiku needs more software, but it needs more /*Haiku*/ software, not freedesktop software ported to Haiku.

Well generally when I remove them I do it in bulk, so I just go on the server, vi /etc/aliases, and dd each line I don't need anymore.

well it all still goes into one inbox, but since they all have different To addresses it makes it a bit easier to write rules to auto-sort it into folders; you can still write those rules based on the From addresses if you know them, though

especially since I make an alias for each place I give out my address, makes that a lot more practical

addalias SSHes to my mail server and appends a line to /etc/aliases to alias $1 to my account, then runs newaliases and restarts Postfix

Possibly, but I think the industry overall has taken the wrong approach to XML. It's much simpler than the specifications make it look if you stick to the 95% case.
In cases like this I think XML can be more readable than JSON, but that's definitely a subjective thing.

I don't think it's necessary; RSS and Atom are widely supported and work well, there's no need to throw in another format for the same thing. Plus I feel like XML is a better format for this kind of thing than JSON, especially since you're likely to want to embed HTML content, which in XML can be done easily with XHTML, but in JSON can only be done with a very long string value.

There are two good ways of thinking of a mobile computing device: As a computer in its own right, or as a portable appendage to a more powerful computer.
Modern smartphones are neither.

I spent a little time looking at compression stats and I think, at an average length of 4 minutes or so, if they were FLACs they would be about 20M each, Opus 96k (lossless but fine for listening to most ears) about 3M each.

I'm starting to think that any communication standard that can't work if your computer is only connected to the Internet for half an hour a day is flawed.

I need to write a rant blog post about media types and filename extensions and Apple fourCCs and Apple UTIs and how none of them are good enough. Maybe I can come up with a new, even more complicated way of doing it.

It ought to be but I think Haiku is all C++ and I don't want to spend several hours learning the quirks of Haiku code and getting set up with a new codebase so that I can make a 10-line change.

2024-06-30 23:58:06 GMT

Haiku stores media types ("MIME types") directly in the filesystem, as its primary file typing mechanism.
Haiku has a built-in HTTP server that serves files 1:1.
HTTP uses media types to identity resources it delivers.
The built-in HTTP server does not serve files with correct media types.

I do think Haiku is a better-designed OS than Freedesktop/Linux or Windows. It's not perfect, but it's better.

you probably wouldn't want to, it's still not the most stable system in the world, but you can use it, there are Web browsers and office suites ported already, most of the basics are there

2024-06-25 03:35:07 GMT

honestly Haiku is pretty okay, if people wrote more software for it you could definitely use it day to day as long as you didn't want to play a lot of video games
